Megson in. Jol out.

Today saw the appointment of Gary Megson at Bolton while just a few hours ago it was announced that Martin Jol had departed company with Spurs - moves that could have a significant impact on Fantasy Managers in the months to come.

Megson emerged as the front runner for the Bolton job after Souness withdrew from the race and today’s appointment came as no surprise. Just how Megson will get on with the likes of Anelka remains to be seen by this will doubtless be a situation that will have to be monitored carefully by Fantasy Managers. My bet is we’ll see Anelka departing come the January window. I’d also expect Megson, a manager renowned for a more *cough* conservative approach to the game, to shut up shop and improve Bolton’s defensive record. Bolton have three of the next four at the Reebok and play Villa, West Ham and Boro before taking on United at the end of November.

Jol’s departure was always on the cards, compounded by tonights 2-1 UEFA Cup defeat to Getafe. Sevilla’s Juande Ramos is rumoured to be lined up to takeover. His arrival could certainly shake things up, particularly with regards to Spurs’ much-vaunted frontline. Ramos will have his own ideas and likes of Spurs old boy, Frédéric Kanouté, a big hit at Sevilla, could be on his shopping list. Defoe and Bent could find themselves shipped out come January and Ramos could even look to cash in on Berbatov with United lying in wait.

  1. What does everyone think will be the impact on Robbie Keane, who had been a quaranteed starter under Jol? I had just drafted him in but am now concerned.

  2. There is now a strong possibility that Defoe will get a run of games - there certainly won’t be the Berbatov / Keane monopoly.

On the bright side the games that Keane doesn’t play up front - he could play on the wing or even as part of a forward three.

  3. how is that a bright side?

  5. The point I was making was that if he doesn’t start up front then he is still an option on the flank, whereas if Berbatov or Defoe don’t play up front then they don’t play at all. Keane still represents the best option of the 3, but just doesn’t now have the monopoly he was enjoying.

  6. Don’t hold me to this but I have heard reports that Arbeloa will NOT be starting this weekend, though not terrible in the short-term as likely to concede against Arsenal, my concern is now growing for his longevity as a regular? Any thoughts anyone? Is it time to ship him out?

  7. I just put Keano in and he had a good star man start…..subbed him for that no hoper Bianchi….and sacrificed Gerrard for Elano…. Sticking with van Paersi as I am running low on subs…(tffo squad game)…..both my Bolton players were transferred ages ago and as a Forest fan I would not risk Anelka now….MEGSON out was the cry at forest …he was one of our worst most neagtive defensve minded managers I can remember….I rate Benjani for value, regular play and cool name and Doyle is back on form too at Reading

Also is jones from sunderland a good option?

  9. Jones from Sunderland is THE option! Just look at his points haul recently.

  11. About to make some transfers, but cannot decide who to bring in…
option one: kenwyne jones, ronaldo & rooney.
option two: kenwyne jones, lampard & drogba
option three: kenwyne jones, ronaldo & drogba
option four: kenwyne jones, lampard & rooney

    Advice much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  12. I have both Butt and Hutt. Butt seems to be a bonus magnet and Hunt scores on occassion. Whoever I bench always does well, so thinking of playing them both this gameweek, but that would mean I’d have to bench Richards. As he’s playing Chelsea I’m not counting on a clean sheet anyway…good idea?

  13. What indication is there that Isaksson is going to start? It didn’t make sense last week (and he didn’t start), and it doesn’t make sense this week. Shouldn’t you be listing Hart as the starter, since … well, since he’s going to start?

  14. Alec, I would for sure go with option one, rooney is on fire this october in epl and uefa cup, and ronaldo is sure to be a great long time investment. the only problem with lamps and drogba is the instablility there, who knows what team will show up and even how long drogba will be there. keep in mind the africa nations cup as well…option one here mate!

  15. Damon, I noticed the same thing. I actually played Isaksson in the league I’m in and got zero points because he didn’t play. Ended up shuffling my players around so I could pick up a keeper that I know will play…

  16. Aaargh! Missed the team changes deadline! Hopefully Friedel and Noble get more points than Gordon and Kenwyne Jones

  17. This is officially the worst week I have ever had in ff. Took out VP for Benjani when I was going to put in Tevez, and took out Essien for Ronaldo to make ronaldo captain. I ended up on minus points I think. I hate this game. Just realised nobody (rightfully) cares either. Cr*p.

  18. Ok- this bonus points thing is really getting on my nerves.

    Jon,
Benjani may have missed a penalty but the fools behind the fantasy game gave him 2 bonus points anyway. And as for Green- clean sheet, saved a penalty, more than three saves in the game- no bonus points

  19. Carragher got voted man of the match but didnt get a single bonus point!!

Im thinking maybe its time to get Ronaldo out and Lampard in (this will free up eough cash to get a Chelsea defender in too - they have good fixtures up until Christmas). Your thoughts guys?

  20. For once the EPL bonus points were spot on. How Carragher got man of the match I will never know- he didn’t do enough to deserve it compared to Fabregas( vital goal) Hleb(good general performance and assist) and Gerrard(vital goal)
In fact, I don’t even rate Carragher any more. His fouls in the penalty box ALWAYS go unnoticed and his general play doesn’t impress me. Agger though is a good fantasy player( more goals and assists) and is actually a stylish player all round
