No reprieve for Essien

Michael Essien’s red card received in the victory at Derby at the weekend will stand after today’s appeal to the FA failed. Essien will now miss three Premiership games starting with the clash with West Ham at the weekend. He’ll also miss the games against Sunderland and the key tussle with Arsenal. Sidwell and Makelele seem likely to benefit in his absence.

  1. Mark, please clarify for the current 4 yellows status for Essien. he got them before straight red. does it mean those 4 yellows now void for the fifth yellow 1 match ban? or they stay as 4 for him to get up to 10 to get 2 match ban? or else? how this is work?

  2. Hi Gobbi. My understanding is that Essien remains on 4 yellows. So he’ll serve this ban and will then be one booking from a further ban. Reo-Coker has recently suffered this. He is suspended for the Blackburn game for picking up his fifth booking having already served a suspension for a two yellows in one game - hence he has six bookings but is only picked up his fifth in five seperate matches at Boro at the weekend. Clear as mud then :-)

  3. Well even worse. In any case, picking Essien in late December with 1 booking before next match ban could be a very risky idea. he’s only good in EPL FF since he is awarded a lot of bonus points. guess next ban is kind of equlize potential bonuses and decrease his FF value.
