The FPL Captain Poll

I’ve been meaning to do this for weeks but with the FA Cup break, I’ve finally got it off the ground. I’ve added a new permanent poll to the left panel menu, underneath the existing poll, which can be used to canvas opinion on the Fantasy Premier League captains for the coming gameweek.

This poll will remain and be updated each gameweek so you can see at a glance who visitors think are the best candidates each week. Yes Ronaldo will doubtless top the poll each week but hopefully, it will give some opinion on other choices.

Addtional polls for those not playing the FPL game will appear above this as normal.

  1. I was waiting for this thread to appear again. Ok i will lay my cards on the table i have ronaldo in my fantasy football teams (s). But in the games where there is a captain everyone picks ronaldo. It takes away the ’skill’ level of the game. I actually hope he gets injured! The reason is that it would give more knowledgeable fantasy football players the edge. When ronaldo was doing well on the occasions i did not pick him as captain i dropped in the rankings beacuse everyone else picked him. The last few games since ronaldos form slipped i rose in the rankings without doing to much amazing scoring. I definitely hope he gets injured/ or at the very least continues his recent bad form. Anyone agree? Bring the skill of picking captains back!

Nigel mate, I have heard this argument time and time again and it just doesnt wash!!
People who claim that skill levels have reduced just cos Ronaldo does well is ridiculous! IMO it increases the skill levels needed! If EVERYONE has Ronaldo then surely its the guys who have the best of the rest win! If you didnt pick Ronnie as your captain then boo hoo for you, your skill levels may not be that high! :-)
BOTTOM LINE: Guys who win mini leagues have high skill levels… they probably also have Ronaldo!
The guy winning my league picked Adebayor this week. (After picking Ronnie for weeks) I picked Ronnie this week! (more fool me!) He is winning our league for a reason… He also picked Benjani V Derby and sold him the week after. That’s skill, and you dont hear him MOANING about everyone having Ronaldo!!!!!!!!

Along with the bonus point system, I think the captaincy double points thingy is a step too far in the random direction, even though I’ve done OK by it this season. Mainly by sticking with Ronaldo week after week, a policy with which I’ll continue ad nauseam till he gets crocked.

i agree about the captaincy being too random, or at least lucky.
many’s the time otherwise useless teams have pulled themselves back solely on the captain doing well’
instead of double the points, what about one and half the points? fairer?
but yes, if in doubt and Arsenal don’t have any whipping boys in the GW, then it’s 100% Ronaldo.

(as for bonus points, I don’t know what matches the FPL ppl watch sometimes - Laursen 1 BP, Young 0 BP in last game????)

the bonus points are fairly random but Ashley young didnt really deserve any for the Newcastle game, didn’t really do anything except for his deadly set pieces.

    Agree with CK.
Also if Ronaldo were injured, then it’s even getting easier.
Current situation is the best scenario. Ronaldo is in a bad form, so that he’s not the definite Captain anymore. We need to think harder who to make captain.

ok I am thinking of making scharner from wigan as captain since they are playing derby…but has scharner started playing as defender instead of a midfileder now? If thats the case he looses some of the appeal as he is listed as a defender in fpl. Is it too much of a gamble to over look adebyor and ronaldo for scharner (playing derby) and 60/40 for a clean sheet plus he might get the odd goal? am i mad?

  2. ps: That is a great addition to the site Mark!!

  3. I agree with CK - although thats probably cos ive got screwed more often by the captaincy than not. I think x2 bonus makes it more fun but also more random as so often my team would out perform my main rival’s only for his captain to have a blinder and nullify the points the rest of my squad pulled out.

Seeing as so much relies on one player doing well it makes it a lot down to luck rather than relying on the balance across your team of 11. For example: Say you score 26 points one week over your rival (which is a substancial gubbing by weekly standards) but you pick adebayor as captain who happens to do nothing while he picks ronaldo who scores twice. you get 2pts x 2 = 4, he gets say [2+10(2xgoal)+3(bonus)]x2= 30 - and bang a 26 point advantage is nullified by ONE player.

Fair enough, theres skill to choosing the right captain - ie the guy most likely to get the biggest points haul but it has too much of a bearing on your weekly score, regardless of what the other 10 do whether or not you have a good week really depends on whether your captain has an off day or not, or gets injured

it should be 1.5x points really rather than x2 (but of course we get into decimal scores then)

Dunno what the rest of you think…

Your math is a bit off IA, if you both have Adebayor and Ronaldo the difference is 32-19=13, so its a 13 point swing not a 26 point swing.

  4. Question… How long should i wait / when is the best time to use my wildcard? It is my only hope of making a comeback in my mini-league! Thoughts please’

    [Reply]

Mate, only 12 games left, use it now!!!!

    [Reply]

Agree with CK - to my mind the wildcard needs some weeks behind it in order to get the benefit. If you feel you can make changes for the better, you need a good half a dozen gameweeks or more to reap those benefits. If you’re behind in your league, use it now and it gives you over a week to tinker away without costing points. There’s also the double fixture gameweeks to plan for and you may to spend points to remove Chelsea/Spurs players this gameweek. Seems like a perfect time if that’s the case.

  5. Now that Essien is back and considering chelsea’s double gamweek do you think he might be a good replacement for Cahill?

  6. I need some advice guys! Fabregas is obviously not performing at the moment yet everyone has kept faith with him so I need to know which of these transfers I should do this week, and if they’re any good! (I’ve already bought Benjani for Berbatov)
    1. buy gerrard, sell fabregas
    2. buy carragher, sell McCartney
    3. buy flamini, sell Hughes (portsmouth)

obviously with the 2 liverpool players I want, i’m very wary of their double gameweek and good run of fixtures and with flamini at least i still have an arsenal player who should play, and against teams that they should be beating. what do you think?

Providing everyone comes through the FA Cup unscathed I shall be selecting option #1, Jimbo.

However, no-one in history has ever taken the advice of a half-puffin/half-human as yet.

I’ve recently had to get rid of either Fab or Clichy, as I wanted to get Adebayor. I choose to get rid of Fab as I reckon that from now til the end of the season he’s likely to get more clean sheets than Fab will get goals. Also his assist tally is on the up.

Out of the options you’ve listed I’d go for number 2, as Liverpool still look as if they should gets some clean sheets soon (they were solid against Chelsea).

  8. United away to Newcastle, arsenal away to birmingham. Newcastle are such a random team depends who turns up, they are leaking so many goals at the moment I would fancy Ronaldo to get at least an assist against the Magpies. That being said I would bet on Adebayor scoring again against Birmingham, but probably not more than one goal. As much as I hate doing it, I’ll probably go with Ron again, since he’s capable of of getting not only 2-3 goals in a match, but also assists and bonus points which adds up to a mega captains haul of 30+. Adebayor is a goal machine but his tally of assists and bonus points doesn’t compare. I also fancy Bullard to get one against the hammers at home, and torres against borough.

BTW great poll Mark, a bit of interactivity on the site is always good.

Along that line of thought, Aston Villa are playing @ Reading. Any chance Agbonlahor will shake out of his funk?
What about Santa Cruz home v Bolton?
Man, we’ve got HOW many days until the next round of Prem matches?????

  9. After reading the comments ck probably sums up neatly what i was really getting at. The captains points are too much. Plus i think i am anti the captain thing after coasting for months (balanced team clever transfers, but as the season goes on everyone else copies these transfers so teams are similar) and now my lead is a couple of points thanks to mr ronaldo been made captain by others in league.Basically i have been threading water at the 20,000 mark for the last few weeks. As for the wild card i have a theory on that why not use it with a couple of games to go in the season maybe 6 ? when midtable teams have nothing to play for, champions league places decided. Why not pick a team players who are fighting for thier lives against relagation at that stage? As for this double gameweek thing i noticed one of the games is chelsea v spurs is it worth a wholesale change for that? Liverpool players are bound to be rested in thier gameweek - but which ones? Basically i think its not a good double gameweek to use transfers unless people pick west ham players

    [Reply]

  10. Just noticed west ham have lfc and chelsea double gw but handy games after that

  11. Zamora maybe worth getting in for double gameweek for West Ham. Got a hat trick in reserve game few days ago.

  13. West Ham players against Liverpool and Chelsea - both those teams don’t concede and will probably both score, so there’s little point choosing a West Ham player unless he is already in your squad.

The trouble with editing, and more particularly deleting, posts is that genuine replies can be made to look ridiculous without the original context - it needs to be made clear that an edit has been made, even if it’s just to correct a spelling mistake. Just a thought.

Waggy Man city have everton at home and wigan at home coming up so I would fancy Petrov’s strong form to continue in those games, city will be on a big high after the united game too. I would try and offload someone else for Gerrard.
