Updated Scout Picks

Refresh your screen and you’ll my scout picks for this week’s games, then you can read on for some nonsense on how they were selected.

The keeper and the back four isn’t an easy selection this week with few obvious clean sheets knocking about. Arsenal and Chelsea have games against Villa and West Ham which could easily see them conceding - that leaves Everton, United, Liverpool and Portsmouth as the remainder of the top six defences to select from.

I can see Everton sneaking their game against Pompey by the odd goal, with 1-0 looking a decent bet, so I’ve given Lescott the nod again. United’s Ferdinand is alongside him, with Ferguson’s men on the road at Fulham. Only Derby have failed to score in more games than Fulham and they’re up against the best defence in the league - a clean sheet looks on the cards then. Ferdinand looks the best option with a slight injury doubt surrounding Vidic.

Liverpool have their double gameweek and Carragher looks most likely to play both this weekend and against West Ham in midweek. To complete the back four I’ve opted for Wheater. He returns from suspension this weekend to face a Reading side who arrive at the Riverside on the back of eight defeats and who scored their first goal in four Premiership games against Villa last weekend. Wheater also offers a significant goal threat to a defence that has looked shaky from set pieces.

That just leaves the keeper and here I’ve gone for West Ham’s Green. This is a decsion based purely on his potential in the FPL game, so apologies to those playing alternative fantasy games. Green’s double gameweek is an obvious pull and, although clean sheets against Chelsea and Liverpool look unlikely, the points for saves he’ll earn in the FPL game against those sides could see him bring in a decent return. Non FPL players seeking an alternative, can take their pick from Hart, Almunia and Robinson with perhaps the latter being the best option, particularly if Woodgate recovers from an ankle injury to play at St Andrews.

Ronaldo picks himself in midfield as always - I can’t see him being rested at the Cottage and he has a history of earning points there in previous seasons. Downing comes in on the other wing with Reading his opposition this weekend. Alves is set for a full Premiership debut and, although Boro struggled to produce against Sheffield United in midweek, I see them putting a couple past Reading with Downing instrumental as ever.

Controversially perhaps, I’ve kept faith with Fabregas despite a lack of form and returns. The Villa game has got goals all over it with O’Neil’s men always likely to score on their travels. I can see Arsenal need 2 or 3 goals to win this one and Fabregas comes into it on the back of his most positive attacking performance of the season against Birmingham where he had 7 efforts on goal. Hleb runs him very close and is certainly a very good second option - I’ve just an inkling that Eduardo’s absence might shake Arsenal’s tactics up a little and free Fabregas to get involved in the last third that little bit more.

Gerrard appears to be an obvious pick to complete the midfield but, as I limit myself to two players per club and with Carragher already in place, I had a straight pick between Torres and Gerrard for the last Liverpool spot. I feel there’s other good sources of points available up front, so Gerrard gets the nod. His returns in the Premiership have been disappointing of late but with two games this week, you would expect at least a double figure return from him as Liverpool chase fourth.

Lastly to the forwards then, where I’ve recalled Adebayor in anticipation of a goal-fest at the Emirates - no further justification needed given the Arsenal’s man’s returns thus far.

There were plenty of contenders for the spot alongside him with Yakubu, Alves, Jones, Berbatov and of course Torres all looking tempting. I’ve opted for Blackburn’s Santa Cruz though. His form has dipped recently but Blackburn have lost just one in the last eight and are coming off the back of a 4-1 win over Bolton. The Newcastle defence has shipped more goals than any other defence over the last five home games and Santa Cruz has scored 10 goals on his travels in the Premiership this season. That all points to the Paraguayan ending his three game goal drought this weekend, although McCarthy, coming off a brace of penalties last weekend, is another decent option if a little more expensive.

There are certainly some quality alternatives to the eleven about this weekend. In defence I’ve already mentioned that Spurs could do well at Birmingham if Woodgate is available - that is a big if though. Sunderland have dreadful away form but were unlucky to concede at Pompey last weekend. They play Derby this week and there are some decent budget purchases amongst Nosworthy, Evans and Bardsley as a result.

In midfield Bentley looks good money in a Blackburn side that look certain to score at Newcastle. He almost made the picks but I opted for Downing instead to spread the risk a little with Blackburn’s Santa Cruz already selected. Cahill and Pienaar are also worthy of attention if you fancy Everton could breach a stubborn Portsmouth rearguard at Goodison. Ljungberg offers the best value option in the West Ham lineup on a double gameweek.

Up front I’ve already mentioned some contenders, of which Yakubu is the form man but again, up against a tough defensive pairing in Campbell and Distin. Sunderland’s Jones or Murphy at Derby, both look good if you’re looking for a budget purchase.

As for an FPL captain, this week’s poll says Gerrard or Torres and it’s hard to argue. Both look strong with their double gameweeks as alternatives to the usual Ronaldo flavoured captain which we’ve all been hooked on for so long.

Which one do you go for? Depends a lot on your mini league situation. Torres is hot but I’d expect Bolton to provide decent resistance at the Reebok. I see that game as a narrow win for Rafa’s men and the type of game that Gerrard will have to step up for to pull Liverpool through - should be FPL bonus for him here. West Ham are also no pushovers but Torres’ home form is strong. Gerrard appears to offer a better chance of a double figure return come what may, via bonus and possible clean sheets. Torres could certainly offer a more spectacular return if things click. So, if you’re chasing a gap, I’d opt for Torres. If you’re sitting comfortably in your league, then Gerrard is the play safe option of the two which should bring you 20 points with the captaincy.

  1. Mark, I transferred Adebayor out for Torres and got Malbranque for Petrov.
Could have been a huge mistake, but it’s done now.

I’m still top of my mini league, but only by 20 points. I have Torres and Gerrard, but will probably stick with Ronaldo for captain. Do you think that’s wise?

Also, do you think it’s wise to play Murphy? I know Sunderland are horrible away, but it being Derby and all…

Rumours are that Ronaldo might be rested - he didn’t show up with the rest of the players.

    Gravatar

Not great news but if that’s the case but then it’s not a bad week for Ferguson to make that decision. I imagine, like you, that 60% of fpl managers would have gone for Gerrard/Torres this week. Might shake things up a little though.

bugger, i changed cpt from gerrard to ron at the last minute last night. Atleast ronaldo is on the bench though, might get a run out if its still 0-0 at half time?

I have six of my little Greggs in the picks too.. It will probably be the worst six though.

How come Reina in goal didn’t get a mention this time out?

  6. I love this site, all your effort is much appreciated.

Friday night defender dilemma - Campbell away at Everton or Scharner away at Man City? I can’t see Everton failing to score and with City on the slide (along with Scharner’s goalscoring potential) I might just go for him. What dya think?

I’m sure you all have your own selection problems, just looking for a second opinion…

Oh, and everyone ditch Fabregas for Hleb and treat yourself with the spare dosh.

    Again, great site.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

The Hleb-inator still hasn’t learnt to shoot unfortunately (he’d be an incredible player if he had, only maybe assists and bonus points up dor grabs… so I still think Fab is worth the extra money.

Although a few weeks ago I did say Diarra couldn’t hit a barn door and he scored next game.

  7. Mark,

Please stop freaking me out and put Belletti back in your predicted Chelsea lineup. Thanks.

  8. 6 of my little ‘yer dads’ are in the scout picks as well. 6 puffinboy, 6 old Gregg 666, which means Damien (Duff) has to be the captain this week and he has nice hair, easy.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Wait, wait. Maybe 666 means pick a red devil? Who, in your opinion, has the best hair out of Brown and Ronaldo? Actually, no need to answer that…

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Good question. Brown has the Action man ‘moving eyes’ look and Ronny spends millions on his but if it has to be a red devil using the 666 theory then Giggs gets the captaincy on hairstyles. He is certainly using that super jet black spray fom Halfords and gets my nod.

  9. Guys am I real slow off the mark here or was Wheater suspended for this weekend’s Reading game serving a match ban for a yellow?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Served his ban during the FA Cup replay on Weds.

    [Reply]

  10. Jono: Wheater served his 1 match ban against Sheff Utd in the exciting FA Cup midweek thriller.

  11. What a service. Anymore questions while Corrie is on or until I can get the remote back.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

LOL! Thanks man (and to you puffin ^) quick off the mark right he’s back in the starting lineup with Anton warming the bench. Next question then who’s your capt for this gw I’m still deciding between 3 and the headache is kicking in!!!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    Sure.

    Is Belletti playing?
Will Brown be out soon now that Neville really is returning?
Will benching Larsson come back to bite me in the arse?

  12. Hi, All’

Can i ask anyone to help me with such a difficult decision.

    Please help required….

I got James and Hart In goal, But don’t know who to pick for this weekend..

    Please help required….

I have a feeling that James will concede goals agains Everton Away and maybe Hart at Home won’t concede any.

    Please help required….

Thanks a Lot to everyone Who replyed.

    Best Regards

    EnaLaC

    [Reply]

  13. Nebi: I think both will concede a goal tomorrow but I would go with James, why you may ask, well here goes.

Hart against wigan, city may leak a cheeky goal but I don’t think Hart will be busy therefore he won’t make many saves.

James. he is in great form and he will be more busy than Hart with an inform Everton which will call on him to produce more saves and producing extra points and a spot kick save in the final 10 mins.

  14. Is the Robinson (TOT) start a sure thing?

    [Reply]

  15. is finnan likely to play both games in the double week for pool?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

In a word, no he is not.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    why you think that?
of pools defenders, carra is almost a cert to play both, dont think hyppia will and of their full back i would have thought finnan was best, esp at right back.
although it is hard to judge rafa!!

i couldn’t afford carra with my plans for the upcoming weeks so out of the rest, i thought finnan was best bet.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

With Finnan, Arbeloa, Skrtel, Hyypia, Agger, Carragher, Aurelio and Riise all available I think he’ll rotate, with either Carra or Arbeloa playing one game at right back.

    But we shall see.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    Finnan’s not playing against Bolton.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I got something right this week then. Wonder if Carragher will get forward and chip in with an assist like he did vs Sunderland?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    Fingers crossed.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I’m assuming Gerrard will get at least an assist out of that goal, even though the BBC/FPL are currently denying it?

  16. No problem Nebi, glad to be of help with goalkeeping issues especially as I was known as ‘The Leaping Salmon’ in my days wearing the Number 1 shirt.

The Necro: Robinson must be a starter, for the simple fact Ramos picked his best team for the milk/league/littlewoods cup. Cerny had great form but Ramos must be seeing an improvement on the training field or a pyschological difference in Robinson which resulted in him regaining his place. Why drop him now?
Have you had any earthquakes in California this week Necro?? Can you beat 5.2 on the rickothingamagig?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Re Robo, I can save some cash signing him instead of Reina, therby allowing me to improve my midfield. BUT, if “Butterfingers” Cerny gets the nod, I am (pardon my French) screwed.

Which of these to choose?: Osman, Jenas, Cahill, Ljungberg, Hleb or Flamini

I’ve never been good @ psychology, tending to prefer a pint or stiff drink. Hence, the only rattling out here has been the martini shaker.

  24. Carvalho will play both matches for Chelsea I think. If Alex will be rotated in, it is Terry who needs rest.

    [Reply]

  25. According to the beeb ronaldo is starting on the bench. thank god i chose gerrard as captain!

    [Reply]

  26. Unlucky Waggy. If Fulham can do enough to make Ferguson worried, I’m sure he’ll come though.

    [Reply]

  27. Oh lord…
Mark was right. Belletti not playing. Not even on the bench!
    I hate this shit.

    [Reply]

  28. Lampard straight red. What is that, three games suspension? Cue Ballack for the double gameweek?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Or Joe Cole perhaps…he seems to be having a good game.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yep he’ll get 3-matches, pending an appeal which seems likely judging by the reports of the sending off so far. Ballack would appear to have a straight run of games if its upheld.

    [Reply]

  29. Larsson scored and he’s my first sub. Doh! Ferguson better keep Ronaldo on the bench.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    damn you Fergie!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I predict both Gerrard and Torres will play at least one minute each in the next two games (eye roll), so that only leaves Piennar. Come on, Piennar injury!

    (sorry)

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    hahahahahah that sucks

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Damn. I had Larsson as my first sub too. :-(

But Forssell is among the eleven starters, so I can’t complain. ;-)

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Exact same situation here. Although Ronaldo’s my captain, so still quite bitter..

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Ah bugger, he just came on…

    [Reply]

  30. Anyone know if Joe Cole will get an assist for the parried shot leading to Ashley Coles 4th for Chelski against the Hammers?

    [Reply]

  31. Lennon didn’t play which is great news for me. He’s in my starting XI. My first sub is Forsell!!!!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Good for you. I, however, had 1-point Malbranque.
6-point Larsson on my bench, a non-playing Belletti with Laursen coming on as sub, then Arsenal scored a late equaliser.
    Oh, and Ronaldo’s my captain.

    [Reply]

  32. i laugh histerically at all those who chose ronaldo for captain, you were all told about there being better options. but no you said he would have a hell of a game , good job on your 2 points!!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Making fun is bad for your karma. I predict a bird will crap on your head.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

i predict gerard (my captain) to have a better gameweek than ronaldo. i guess all he needs to do is play 60 minutes and im right.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

All he needs to do is breathe and you’re right.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

He could get a red card within the first minute and get him -4 points

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    Keep dreamin’.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

he hasn’t gotten a red card all season and neither on the seasson before , so chances of that happening are slim to none.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

well I have him as captain as well, so woohoo!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

all i need is for hart to have a clean sheet and benjani to have a good game and i should have a gook week, even though the lack of goals from tevez and adebayor didnt help

  33. Sir Alex has a sense of humour. He put Ronaldo in for twenty minutes and will likely finish with 1 point. Meanwhile I have Forssell as a second substitute.

    [Reply]

  34. I brought in Lampard and now he’ll be gone for 3 games. Plus I have Forsell as first sub (but everyone I have is playing… fingers crossed Cahill is rested). I’m not happy

    [Reply]

  35. I.ve got Larsson & Forssell on the bench, but both will come on ‘cos I had Vidic & Lennon first choice. Still got Torres(C) & Gerrard to play, yummy…

    [Reply]

  36. …& anyone know why Adebayor hasn’t been givin an assist in FPL game?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Coz they take their info from the BBC live match info and they didn’t mention his assist in their live match report. Should be corrected soon.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yeah, they usually correct goals/assists within 24 hours.

    [Reply]

  37. What a pathetic week..

I’ve lost all faith. My best laid plans and tinkering go to waste whereas my rival doesn’t bother taking out Petrov and others who are missing and yet Forsell and a couple of Sunderland defenders stroll on from his bench!

How can you account for that…Rubbish.

Here’s my scout notes for now and the rest of the season:

    Fabregas- Rubbish
    Santa Cruz- Rubbish
    Hleb- Rubbish
    Bullard- Rubbish
    Ronaldo- Rubbish
    Adebayor- Rubbish
    Ljungberg- Rubbish
    Keane- Rubbish
    Laursen- Rubbish

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Hey, at least you get assist points for Adebayor and Ljungber’s playing again.
I’m losing my no.1 spot after 6 months on top.
A pathetic 16 points with Howard, Gerrard and Torres still to come. My main rival has 15 points, with Howard, Hyppia, Lescott, Captain Gerrard, Pienaar and Torres still to come.
    I’m screwed. Damn you Santa!!!

    Wildcard time.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

That wasn’t my team I listed, although some of them were…

You should be alright with Torres and Gerrard. Piennar probably won’t do much, and Hyppia might not play…

I’ve also vanquished my lead after months at the top- not a nice feeling.

But I have a young team, who’ve never been involved in a title run in before. And the press have been on my back for most of the season. I’ve tried to adopt a siege mentality (set up a firewall on my internet security), and have said some harsh words in the dressing room (sitting in my dressing gown shouting at the screen) so hopefully me and the lads can look back over the season and at least say that we tried our best…

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Thank you for that. Your posts always crack me up. Makes me forget for a little while that I want my life back and can’t wait for it to be May.

It will be tough seeing my lads in second, possibly third place after having been first practically from the beginning, but I still have my wildcard and they don’t.

I shall be throwing some names into a hat and feeding them to a pigeon. Then whichever ones he craps out first will be my brand new team.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Why no assist for Adebayor? :(

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Well he got oit in the end but what about tevez(won the free kick from which hargreaves scores) and gerrard no assist for the og …god dammit FPL

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    God, you’re such a bunch of crybabies…

    From the FPL Rules section:

“No assist is given for a player who earns a free kick that subsequently results in a goal.”

And Gerrard’s assists and 3 boni will be added soon enough…

    [Reply]

  38. Now that Joe Hart’s gone and got 10 points I need Liverpool to get two clean sheets or I’m stuffed.

    [Reply]

  39. What a crap week so fsr only got 14 points so far. Although still have James, Lescott, Gerrard and the mighty Torres as captain still to play. Come on Liverpool

    [Reply]

  40. Can anyone explain why Adebayor wasnt credited with an assist for todays equaliser?? It was his knock dsown that enabled Bendtner to tap in…Just curious…What constitutes an assist??? I would have thought Adebayor’s contribution would have counted..Needed all possible points today after captaining Ronny…Bad day at black rock…Goofys run out for 20 mins cost me the points Larsson scored as first reserve…That plus Lampards harsh dismissal..I’ve had better Saturdays!!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Wouldn’t panic - 23 is the average FPL score.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

.. and the highest score is 83 points! This guy benched Ronaldo which made me really surprised.. but then I realised he left the team since the 3rd Gameweek :P

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Read above. The points will come.
Funny by the way, the gave Adebayor’s assist points to Agbonlahor by mistake for a while…

    [Reply]

  41. Just checked, Adebayor got his assist so you can stop complaining =]

I’m sitting on a miserable 16 points, but forsell to come in as 1st sub, and howard, lescott, gerrard (c) and Torres still to come, I’m aiming for high fifties/sixties by the end of wed.

    Bolton to win 3-0?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    I certainly hope not!
I have Gerrard(c), Torres too (as well as Lescott) so a 3-0 home win wouldn’t do anyone any favours. Anyway, I shouldn’ complain too much as I was the beneficiary of three clean sheets..

still a sour taste on how fergie used ronaldo,
either he thought it was a really easy game but if i were him i would of put a tough team since arsenal were facing a strong team. resting him sounds probable but why put him in after the game is pretty much secured, the tactics used here are driving me crazy. something smells funky here?

    [Reply]

  44. i looked at his team and i was amazed by the balls this guy had to play such team, specially a derby defender and 3 birmingham players on his squad, i was going to give him a lot of credit but then i realized he left the game. and he was preparing for fw 4 when ronaldo was injured i believe

    [Reply]

  45. LOL

IS that an assist for Gerrard?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I hope so! FPL rules on assists:

“If a goalkeeper does not have control of the ball and parries a shot or drops a cross or the ball rebounds off the woodwork, the attacking player shooting or crossing the ball receives the assist if a goal directly ensues.”

  48. Bad weekend for me so far i’m only on 24 points!

I was just wondering if now would be a good time to get Ballack on my team?

He scored yesterday, Lampard is suspended and chelsea’s next two games promise points…

Spot on, Ollie, though he deserved to get 8.

I see they gave Reina (1 save and some dodgy handling and decision-making) the 3 bonus points; so nice of them to allow Stevie Wonder to adjudicate on the match.

  50. And now they give a goal to Defoe that he didn’t touch. I’m hoping for a couple of decision reversals later.

  51. Actually Defoe did touch it.

  52. Yeah agreed Defoe did get the slightest of touches on it - notes on the weekend action, I wish I stuck with Gerrard as captain having switched to Torres in the final 5 minutes before the fpl deadline! Ronaldo being rested for the Lyon game might well have saved my skin. Does anyone know if an appeal on Lampard’s red card could be granted? I’m thinking of getting Ballack in for the Derby home game and double gw. Cheers

  53. I have Forsell as my first sub and all of my players played… gutted. I have Lampard currently. Does anyone know whether Chelsea are planning to appeal? If he’s suspended I think I’ll replace him with Ballack for those 3 games because he’ll surely play all 3

If Aliadiere gets his ‘handbags at dawn’ ban extended for a ‘frivolous’ appeal then Fatty has no chance of getting his rescinded. I wouldn’t even bother appealing.

Yeah, was thinking the same. I’ve brought in Ballack before his price goes up. Worth taking a 4 point hit to bring in Yakubu for Sunderland’s Murphy?

this is the perfect time to buy ballack, i bought him a few weeks ago noticing that petrov wasn’t playing the same as before. i made a good call on that one, ballack was getting bonus points left and rigth also for some reason his”stock” value went down, beats me why. he went down to 8.2 which will be the cheapest he will ever be . so a must BUY!!!! at a hell of a price.

He went down because firstly Chelsea had a gameweek with no fixture due to the Carling Cup Final, and also people were probably worried that he wouldn’t play as much with Lampard returning to fitness

But, as for Yakubu… worth the 4 point hit to bring him in?

  54. Wright-Phillips is the same price as Hleb at the moment, he going to be starting now Lampard is out of the picture?
