Three Week Layoff For Fabregas

posted in Injury News, Team News, Team Selection |

Wenger has confirmed that Cesc Fabregas will miss the final game of the season due to the groin injury that kept him out of yesterday’s victory over Everton. Fabregas has had scans on the injury and Wenger has revealed that the midfielder will require a three-week layoff [source].

That will mean that thousands of fantasy managers will be trading in the Spaniard for the final game next Sunday. His value should present some decent options, either in a straight swap, or as part of a double transfer. In terms of straight replacements attention will doubtless turn to those players who will have something to play for next weekend - names like Barry, Bullard and possibly Joe Cole, Ballack and Lampard - should Chelsea keep their title hopes alive at Newcastle this afternoon.

Indeed, Chelsea’s result at Newcastle is likely to be the factor that will shape the transfer decisions made this week. More on that in my weekend Scout Notes later today.

Yep, if it is decided today and Man Utd finally win the title then Ronaldo will surely be rested against Wigan, which will leave everyone with 13.5 million to spend on a midfielder next week and with a few managers having Fab as well(like me)then nearly 24 million to spend taking a 4 point hit. I can see a poll coming on.

lol…already have the poll ready, just waiting on the Chelsea result. Like you say, a win for Newcastle and Ronaldo is on very shaky ground next weekend.

Your back in Ronaldo son. I might vote for Ballack in your poll leader.

    Well, I’m back.

Above post was actually Wenger’s answer to my question at the press conference which also indicated to me I should never play fantasy footy again. He had said Fabregas was injured, but not to what extent. With my team in mind, I actually asked him if he would play in the Sunderland game and he answered: he will be out for three weeks. He will be fit for Spain, but not for us.

I got the answer I wanted, but I asked for all the wrong reasons…
Fantasy football has officially corrupted me.

Before I sell Fabregas - can anyone throw light on the Berbatov scenario? May need to get rid of him too

    1. Gravatar Alex on May 5th, 2008 at 18:04 (Reply)

Same here. But even if he were to play, it’s not that great a fixture. Just get rid. I’m thinking of getting Torres for him.

Last I saw him, the Bulgarina was paddling out to the break leaving an Exxon Valdez slick in his wake mumbling something that sounded like “Spurs suck.”

Do we all think Ballack is the best to bring in for next week then? I’m thinking Lampard, Ballack or Cole. If i choose Cole or Ballack I can swap al-habsi for Cech.

Alex - Do you think you could arrange weekly interviews with all the prem managers for next season? I reckon we would all be able to walk to victory in our respective leagues if you did?

    1. Gravatar Alex on May 5th, 2008 at 18:49 (Reply)

Probably not but I’ll take bribes to ask specific questions.

A Chelsea player does sound the most tempting for the last GW. But the risk is that the one you don’t get will be the one to get the points this week. You just never know with them.

I agree it has to be Ballack for Fabregas, even though Lamps may feel the pressure has step his game up,but on todays performance Ballack is the only 100% starter!

  6. Gravatar waggy on May 5th, 2008 at 19:58 (Reply)

Yep was ballack in for fabs for me. Any news on berbatov? Liverpool isn’t actually an easy game even if he does play. I can afford any striker to replace him - though cant have any more Chelsea players. Thinking Tevez but would I be crazy to consider a reading striker?

Just seen on SSN that man of the match at Newcastle was Essien yet he only got 1 bonus point for the FPL, should he not have got the full 3?

    1. Gravatar yer dad on May 5th, 2008 at 21:30 (Reply)

He even got MotM and the bubbly on Sky. FPL have a dartboard at FPL headquarters with all the players heads and throw 3 darts and that is how it is decided. If I was in charge of the darts I would of thrown Terry for 3 points today.
Serious though, FPL decide who they think was MotM and award the points accordingly.

Essien is a bonus machine and i need to maintain the lead in my league. Is it wise to play it safe and buy essien for fab and almost guarantee 3 bonus or go for Ballack???

    Help plz?

  9. Gravatar Al on May 6th, 2008 at 01:19 (Reply)

Son, the posts above kind of indicate that bonus points are never guaranteed. Before the newcastle game, essien had the highest form of all chelsea midfielders at 5.8 in the FPL. I too was leaning towards him as a replacement for Fab, but the fact is Ballack is not only a good free kick taker, but also superb in the air, and is a bigger goal threat to Essien.

I agree Lampard might not be the best value at 11m for the last match, although he looked awesome and took Chelsea up a gear when he came on.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Gerrard yet for the spurs match as a viable replacement?

Alex - given the millions of players of fantasy football around the world, I’d say you were doing a great job asking the right questions! Next time you see him, can you ask if it’s likely Clichy will pick up another 3 bonus points? Ta!

No point. That’s the PA and unfortunately they don’t give press conferences…
