Carvalho in Fitness Race

posted in Injury News, Team News, Team Selection |

Chelsea’s Ricardo Carvalho remains a doubt for the final game of the season against Bolton. The defender was replaced after 77-minutes of the Newcastle game with a back injury and it is reported that he’s been subject to intensive treatment so far this week to get him fit for the deciding game [source].

Alex replaced him in the Newcastle game and will slot straight in alongside Terry should Carvalho fail in his bid for fitness. It might even be the case that Grant would even prefer Alex in his lineup - his size would certainly help deal with Bolton’s style of play.

I too want him to be there on Sunday - didn’t Martin Tyler make reference on Monday to Carvalho as “Chelsea’s lucky charm”(??) - when Carvalho starts a game for Chelsea they don’t lose…

Any news on Mr Bikey, hes in my team along with Berby and Fab.
Also any suggestion for replacemnets, dont mind the 4 point hit and money is no object now, would consider an 8 point hit if needs be.
    Already have Barry,Ronny and Downing

I don’t think you can look far past Drogba and a Fulham midfielder this gameweek, Bullard or Davies. Players with something to play for.

im holding thumbs like u boys…too much is always mad of JT when in actual fact Carvalho for me is the rock there!

Nah, I got the last question and then they all scattered like cockroaches.

What about captain this week? I really think Drogba could be a better bet this week than Ronnie!

    1. Gravatar TheNecromancer on May 7th, 2008 at 22:05 (Reply)

Not sure on that one as both are equally motivated and I favor Ronnie on set pieces and for assists. Drogba has the home fixture and injured Anelka advantages, though.

Last GW was one of the rare weeks I didn’t choose ronaldo as captain, but was lucky santa bagged a brace so i only lost 6 points on the teams above.

Going ronaldo again this week, the only risk I can see is that wigan mark him tightly and it’s a physical game. Possibly any rain will turn the pitch into a quagmire which means a passing style on the ground will be disrupted.

Drogba doesn’t take free kicks (often), penalties and sometimes he can drift in and out of matches. Although he is likely to get involved, Chelsea could just as easily score all their goals from Midfield just like they did against Newcastle.

As for JT, he is a much better chance for a goal than Carvalho, he should have scored against Newcastle, and he should have collected some bonus points too! I reckon Alex might get a start, he’s already proven to be reliable. To quote the partridge, “He’s got a foot like a traction engine” !!!

  9. Gravatar Hman on May 8th, 2008 at 09:32 (Reply)

Hi, i’m Hman, not new to this website, but the first time i’ve posted and i really need your help!
I play FPL and I’m 30 points of the top spot and with a small wager on it with the top 3 teams i’m really pushing for some points.

Top 3 teams have similar team setups so I’ve decided to take out ronaldo to free up some cash and slip in a few players, now i’m face with a dilemma!

    My current squad is

    Reina

    Lescott / Gallas / Laursen / Carragher

    Fabregas / Barry / Essien

Adebayor / Berbatov / Santa Cruz

I have enough money to slot Ronaldo back in for fab a straight swap but leaves me no money to swap anyone else, I was thinking about dropping Fabregas for Ballack and Berbatov for Drogba, or perhaps taking an 8 point hit and getting a Utd defender or Clichy in aswell.

I know my team doesn’t favour upcoming fixtures but I’ve been trying to change players that my rivals have as points just seem to make no difference (obviously) if you have the same players.

So where to gamble? Your views!

    1. Gravatar higgo on May 8th, 2008 at 10:01 (Reply)

this comes back to the merits of a 4 point hit. Im in a similar position as most of my rivals have same players. To make up your new player is going to have to score at least 6 points so a goal is a must. At this stage i think just keeping the 4/8 points might be better.

I think someone not very obvious like a birmingham or fulham midfielder. Im putting in shorey instead of wheater or campbell in defence in hope of a assist that my rivals wont have. The problem with drogba is that they may very easily choose him too and of course he may score no more than berbatov. I think its a week for bullard to show his stuff.

Essien has had good form too and could be a real gamble for captain!

      who are your subs?

    2. Gravatar Niall Quinn's Disco Pants on May 8th, 2008 at 13:23 (Reply)

How bout get Ronaldo back for Fabregas!

  10. Gravatar Ben on May 8th, 2008 at 09:53 (Reply)

    Hman,

Who is your back-up midfielder? I would sell ronaldo and fabregras and bring in ballack and another midfielder with the money left over.

You should be able to get a pretty decent guy.

    Ballack for captain.

  11. Gravatar Ben on May 8th, 2008 at 09:55 (Reply)

The guy above me has ronaldo as captain,

do i match him or make drogba captain?

I’m 20 points off of him.

My differentiators are gerrard, drogba, tevez. Can these 3 gain 20 points??

    1. Gravatar yer dad on May 8th, 2008 at 09:59 (Reply)

You have to gamble as the great Jim Bowen’s crowd used to say and go for the speedboat.

    2. Gravatar Bill and on May 8th, 2008 at 11:43 (Reply)

The guy above you? Do you mean higgo? He seams to be the only person above you here. How do you know he’s got Ronaldo as captain? Reading his post he could very well have Essien.

Unless you mean yourself, as the guy above, then you seem to be selecting Ballack for captain.

  12. Gravatar Ben on May 8th, 2008 at 10:06 (Reply)

    thanks yer dad

    Drogba it is!

  13. Gravatar higgo on May 8th, 2008 at 10:11 (Reply)

green against villa or kirkland against wigan? not a great choice! any ideas?

  14. Gravatar Ben on May 8th, 2008 at 10:42 (Reply)

green without a doubt, wigan no chance of a clean sheet!

  15. Gravatar Brad on May 8th, 2008 at 11:26 (Reply)

I have seen lots of support for Ballack, Drogba and Lamps but has anyone thought it might be worth having a punt on Essien? He has been in golden form lately.

    Thoughts?

  16. Gravatar Al on May 8th, 2008 at 11:57 (Reply)

Great player and good value at 8m. Grant seems to like to play him at right back though?

  17. Gravatar Brad on May 8th, 2008 at 12:25 (Reply)

Yeh fair point. I am therefore likely to fall in line with the current consensus for Ballack (although Lamps is still someone to consider as i see him as a big game player).

My other issue for this final week is which keeper has the best chance for a clean sheet (excluding Cech, Freidel and Van Der Sar as i already have 2 other players from these teams). Right now i am thinking Hahnemann to keep Derby honest. Any others worth a look at?

  18. Gravatar Peteskee on May 8th, 2008 at 14:37 (Reply)

tough choice there brad…ive got friedel and hart :( both not playin for much and not great fixtures…who u got?

    1. Gravatar Brad on May 8th, 2008 at 15:33 (Reply)

Peteskee - I’ve got James at the moment, so definitely need to make a switch. Decisions, decisions…

  19. Gravatar sam on May 8th, 2008 at 17:37 (Reply)

iv got friedel in net, should i take the 4 point hit to bring in cech?

    1. Gravatar yer dad on May 8th, 2008 at 21:15 (Reply)

Sam, no, no, no, no for a 4 point hit for a keeper as it is last gameweek. Cech will have to save a spot kick to give you a good return or make 3+ saves just to get you an extra point.

  20. Gravatar Hman on May 8th, 2008 at 18:50 (Reply)

    Ben,

My backup midfielders are Krancjer and Muamba, I dont know if i should get ballack in and drogba, or perhaps ballack and terry or Ballack terry and tevez upfront or something else?! I’m steering towards Bullard as well but just need to know what do you reckon,

Any news on Berbatov at all!?

  21. Gravatar Steve on May 8th, 2008 at 19:24 (Reply)

Any advice on my transfers this week guys?

8 point hit to bring in Drogba, Ballack and a bencher for Fab and Agbonlahor, which leaves me al-habsi in goal.

    Or

4 point hit to bring in Cech and ballack.

If bolton nick a goal i’ll get no difference between having cech or al-habsi. What’s the chance of al-habsi picking up lots of points for making saves?

    1. Gravatar Dr Sanchez on May 8th, 2008 at 21:10 (Reply)

Of the two, Cech and Ballack, especially with the extra 4 points

On the Ballack subject, as Lamps was benched for a far harder fixture last week, does anyone else think that Ballack could sit the game out this week?

    2. Gravatar yer dad on May 8th, 2008 at 21:23 (Reply)

Steve, see Sam advice. 4 point hit for a keeper is a big risk and I can’t see Cech making 21 saves.I am confused when you say a bencher for fab?? If you sell Fab then surely you don’t need a 4 point hit to bring in Ballack.

      1. Gravatar Steve on May 10th, 2008 at 17:10 (Reply)

thanks yer dad. I need to look at a bencher to be able to afford drogba. I’d be selling Fab, Agbonlahor and Gamst to get in Ballack and Drogba, the bencher is required to get the money for Drogba

  22. Gravatar outsider on May 8th, 2008 at 21:06 (Reply)

Cant see the point of a 4 point hit for dropping al habsi - Chelsea are hardly breaking the net at the moment.
