Degan’s Arrival Brings Further Uncertainty

Rafa Benitez has today boosted his defensive options for next season by confirming the signing of Swiss right-back Philipp Degen from Borussia Dortmund on a free.

“He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality”, remarked Rafa. “His strength is going forward and I am confident he will be prove to be a quality addition to our squad.”

Twenty-five-year-old Degan has 26 Swiss caps to his name and appeared 10 times in a Dortmund shirt last season. He is set to compete directly with both Finnan and Arbeloa for the right-back berth at Anfield.

His arrival will no doubt cause further headaches for fantasy managers when it comes to considering a Liverpool defence that kept 18 clean sheets this term - second only to United and Chelsea. For me, this further competition in the full-back area, combined with the return to fitness of Agger at centre-back, only goes to increase the appeal of Carragher and keeper Reina as the most reliable sources of starts and clean sheets in Rafa’s backline.

  1. The front page of Degan and his brother’s website doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence. http://www.degendegen.com/

    Au contraire!
Look what being a well-oiled, homo-erotic footballer has done for C-Ron.
    Sprechts du switzerdeutsch, Alex?

Is that “die” as in “go jump off a cliff” or “die” as in “that/this/the”?

    Duly noted, Fair Alex.
Way back when I shared a couchette with a couple of Germans and a couple of Danes, and while they would speak freely w me, they would utter hardly a word to each other. I should have known better.

So now you’re calling me Danish?

    Danish, Dutch. Potayto, Potahto. Whatever.

Just referring to a winder-held dislike of the Germans by their former colonial subjects…

Oh, behave! Puffin will get jealous.

He only ever gets jealous at Capello and that’s because he has highlights and gets away with wearing a thong.

Mr Chiles is a WBA-supporting TV presenter with a face like a squashed paper bag.

More like a face that’s been vomited out by a hamster.

Perhaps Mr Chiles’ hamster should lay off the “bearded clams” Puffin is so fond of.

Pardon my ignance (again) but wtf is a WBA?
WBA = West Bromwich Albion? What’s wrong with that (aside from being called The Baggies, again, wtf)?

    Cheers,

Did I say there was anything wrong with supporting West Brom? Well, did I??

Pointing it out suggested something was unseemly about supporting The Baggies. I am all for ridiculing anyone for supporting a team with a name like that. Just think, next year we will have an entire season of being able to chuckle at The Mighty Potters!

Can’t believe I checked that link out! I was worried as I thought degen might be short for degenerative and things could only get worse from there.
    But those Degen’s are so…………….well…….oiled.

Liverpool should buy both of the Degan boys. That way they could act as well oiled book ends to the hotness of Torres. If we can’t win the league at least we can try to be the best looking also rans. ; )

My biggest problem is selecting which Degan wallpaper i want!

  3. Degan will hopefully add a bit of width/attack to the Red’s right hand side… Similar to Evra’s role on the Left for ManYoo. i’d suggest he’d get the nod over Arbeloa, and Finnan is linked with a return to Fulham…
