Not necessarily..i would look at the fixtures each week and see which formation best suits the matches that weekend…I’m sure throughout the season i’ll use everything from a 4-5-1 to 3-5-2 to 3-4-3…i think you need to be flexible and open to differing formations and positions (the bishop said to the actress
) )
Good point. I remember a couple of years ago you could line up with a 5-5-0, which was pretty ridiculous. Changing that rule was a good move. Thanks for the reassurance!
Another “under the radar” i reckon for 08/09 is Rooney (especially now that CRon is out for the first few months).
I got the impression that he was really restricted by the team’s CRon-centric game plan last year and from all reports he is very hungry to step up.
At 11 he is by no means a cheap gamble – but i just get a feeling it is his year to establish himself (and then of course get sold to a European super club with more money than sense as seems to be the custom… hmm).
Man.. but is he UGLY.
He’s quite good looking when you stand him next to Tevez!
What about Paul Scholes?? (speaking of fugly) I haven’t heard anyone mention him….at about 7 mill he looks a bargain as well… especially early on – i’m assuming he’s had no further injury hassles over the summer. Am i missing something??
Anderson may be first choice in Scholes’ position soon.
Utd’s early fixtures are a bit hit & miss (and they don’t play in week 3). He doesn’t get as far forward as he used to and although he may score well in the odd week it’s not great value for 7. For that money they are better options, especially if you go up to the 7.5, 8.0, & 8.5 bracket. There are some good buys at 6.0, who i would expect to at least match anything Scholes may score in Ronaldo’s absence.
My thinking is that with CRon out for the start of the season, Scholes may be pushing forward – & isn’t Anderson playing in the Olympics for the start of the season?? I’m purely looking at Scholes as a cash cow to on-sell later hopefully at a profit.
.
I’m going for a solid looking squad to start with, as they’ll be suprise exclusions galore, so best not to get caught out. I like to have players on the bench who can hold their own in any given week, and who have the potential to score really well occasionally. No passengers in my squad this year!
My cheaper players are; (D) Scharner, Wheater, Cahill (M) M.Taylor
(F) Ashton (…possibly Diouf early on).
What’s the deal with Meite? I thought he wasn’t first choice late on last season?
Love the new next 5 fixtures grid (saves me the hassle!). Usually the big points arise for attacking players when they’re playing the promoted teams at home, which means the following teams/weeks have the greatest points potential;
WK 1: Arsenal, Bolton (both have v.good first 3 fixures)
WK 2: Blackburn
WK 3: Bolton, Middlesbrough
WK 4: Newcastle
WK 5: Liverpool
hi,
does anyone have any idea on how the score for the keepers wary between home and away fixtures? my gut feeling is telling me they normally earn more points when they play home. please share what you think.
and who do you reccon is the best 4.0 defender. not just for the first weeks but someone to have on the bench for pretty much all season.
One last comment for now. I just read the Pundit piece on FPL, where they suggest it’s best to pick subs from newly promoted teams. I have to say that i don’t agree with doing that. The news boys will struggle, and with the rotation systems of the bigger clubs, there is more a case for not choosing players who, in all likelihood, will come in and score nothing more than the basic 2 points (these teams won’t score many goals!).
I think you’re better off picking 2 ‘good value’ stars, and then the rest are mid-range players from the more established prem clubs, some of whom are undervalued in your opinion. I’m thinking 1st week:
Jaaskelainen. Bosingwa, Lescott, Bouma.
Fabregas (C), A.Young, M.Taylor, Noble.
Adebayor, Diouf, Yakubu.
It really depends on how you want to distribute your money. The promoted players are great value for money as they don’t bring any history with them. if you can get a player for 4m def or 4.5m midfield, who is guaranteed 2 points to start and may also pickup bonus points. Look at kenwyne jones, he scored quite a few goals last season and turned out to be a bargain for what he cost.
And of course money you save on the bench is well spent on your first XI. I’m loathe to spend more than 4.5m on a def and 5m on a midfielder or attacher so I can afford big names in my starting lineup. Not saying thats the best strategy but it’s one that’s done well for me last season.
hey first post of the new season
ive been doing alot of tinkering already, here my team so far
HOWARD schwazer
CAHILL LAURSEN BOSINGWHA baines taylor(wigan)
FABREGAS YOUNG MODRIC NOBLE bullard
TORRES ASHTON YAKUBU
Thoughts??
Im hoping modric and bosingwa get off to a flyer but im not sure about baines do you reckon he’ll start??
You mean you will sub Bullard in the opening game when Fulham play Hull?!!
A lot of people seem to be getting Noble this year. I had him all of last season and he was a nice cheeky guy to have on the bench who could come on and get the occasional assist, or even penalty. that was however when he cost only 4.5m. his value has now gone up to 5.5m, and for someone who doesn’t always start (especially as Parker and Dyer will be back to fitness this season) i don’t know if he’s still worth it. instead, for 5m, why not get……
…. GEOVANNI
Nolan+0.5m OR Sidwell – That’s a tricky one any thoughts?
I agree that the next 5 fixtures feature is great. I’ve made alot of changes looking at this mainly as I didn’t realise that Man United miss week 3, and that Pompey have a very difficult start.
My Squad at the mo is;
Schwarzer (Howard – Sub for first week only)
Bale Clichy Knight Cahill (Johnson)
Modric Young Arteta Scholes (Lawrence)
Rooney RVP (Bednar)
+ £1Mill in the bank for Torres after week 1.
traore on the wing??? regular? who said that!!! you havin a laugh? if its true, im in!
I seriously doubt the possibility of that. Sure Traore could play the odd game if there are injuries, but not as a regular. Walcott, Nasri should be the two wings, unless Wenger decides to easy in Nasri like he did with Eduardo last season, but I think he’ll slot straight into the team.
I’ll think you’ll find the word regular was never used!!! What i said was Wenger wants to try and employ him as a winger this season rather than as left back..I also said it’d be worth the risk him missing matches at the price he is at (4.5M) if he is to feature as a winger…Good grief its like chinese whispers in here!!!

Purple monkey dishwasher
So what would you guys think abou this squad I have.
GKs-Howard and Kirkland
Defenders-Lescott, Dunne, Wheater, Cahill, and Bosingwa
Midfielders-Modric, Bullard, Noble, Lawrence, and Arteta
Forwards-Adebayor, Torres, and Ashton
I could switch Adebayor to Yakubu and get Modric switched to Fabregas if i wanted to.
Arteta coming back from injury, Lescott recovering from knee surgery, modric is an unknown quantity, arsenal are trying to ditch adebayor so you may have to change him in the future. Thoguht Dunne was injured also? might be wrong. Otherwise looks pretty good should score plenty!
Has anyone got any idea where you can get updates on friendlies? Do you need to go to each teams websites? Balls if you do!
Also, a little bit of a risk, anyone think that Dyer is a bargain?
Okay – after a bit of fiddling around i’ve come up with
Almunia (Schwarzer)
Ferdinand, Terry, Clichy, Meite, Obrien
Cesc, Stevie G, Lampard, Downing, Pienaar
Torres, Yak and Fagan
Any thoughts??
Looks pretty good PakHawk! 3-5-3? Yeah?
Yeah if these are based on the Fantasy Premier League prices thats about £10 million over budget???
Just playing with your heads early – nothing like a bit of ‘mental disintegration’ to spice things up!! Game on.
I woould change Pienaar for Ronaldo just so you have the funds to afford him when he’s back.

No problem Red Devil all the best
The Dream team..
Kirkland, (Schwarzer)
Richards, Bosingwa, Bale, Taylor, (Meite)
Young, Fabregas, Gerrard. (Hamann) (Mullins)
Torres, Yakubu, Ashton
Boom!
Here is the squad if have got so far.
Kirkland in first week the switch to Howard
Laursen,Cahill,Bosingwa with subs of Neville (Everton) Shawcross
Fabregas,Bullard,Noble Ballack with sub of Lawrence
Yakubu,Ashton and Torres as Captain
I think it may need some changes but I want some of your advice.
FPL is the best
Mendes of Portsmouth. Is he a good buy for a 4.5M bench player or a waste of my time and money?
I am looking and I was wondering is Ballack a good buy or should I go lower and help elsewhere?
Anyone think Walcott might be worth a punt at 7 mil? I figure he might be like Young at AV last year: playing on the wing but listed as a forward. But with Arsenal’s opening fixtures he could also score big for such a low price, and who else would start on the right? Eboue? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
No I don’t think Walcott is worth 7 Million in my opinion, if 7 is your max I reckon Gamst Pedersen, Lennon or Jenas. I’d probably put Walcott in for the opening fixtures, and then replace with Pedersen.
What are people’s opinions on the best value 8 mill and less strikers.
Options are:
Yakubu, Alves, Defoe, Crouch, Jo, Carew, and may a couple of others.
I’ve got Rooney, RVP and Bednar (plus 1Mill) at the mo, but if Berbatov goes to united them it’ll be Berba, RVP plus one to the value of upto 8 mill.
Cheers.
I’ve got alves and yakubu up front, with the option of brining in Jo or Crouch for yakubu after a few games. Crouch has a tough starting set of fixtures and Jo might need time to adapt although he did score in a recent preseason match which is a promising sign. Carew should keep scoring also but I think Villa will be in for a tough season if Barry leaves.
wheres tevez going?????, or rooney, tevez, berbatov, rotation time for furguson??? surely dream teamers can’t fall foul of that at man u??????
Anybody rate Brown’s chances of starting before Neville this season? Did a fantastic job for them this year but the captain is the captain!
I’ve wondered the same thing Shin C, I’m trying to figure out who the best 6.0m defenders are, I have Jagielka and Bosingwa currently but there might be better value out there?
Dub
P Neville – eve
Dunne – city
Pogatez – boro
will all be potential g8 defender options as they are captains
Nice one Mrpdm, thanks!
Np Dub , just one thing Dunne is out for a few games coz of suspension . cyki.com code 945-234
Taylor or Nolan?
Got 6.0 and think these are probably the best options early on due to their fixtures.
Taylor
any worries regarding my team lads??
howard
agger/bosingwa/taylor(wigan)
fabregas/lennon/gerrard/geovanni
torres/van persie/zamora
subs:
schwarzer
mendy
hammann
cahill
I’m interested to see what transfer policy you guys have.On average how many transfers per game week do you make?
I tend to make 2-3 per week, unless on the rare occasion it’s a double game week, and I’ll wade in big time.
Mostly one per week, on the odd occasion I make two but that is very rare.
I played this one last year really enjoyed it. Have join the fantasy football scout league.
Reina, Schwarzer
Evra, Bosingwa, Sagna, Melchiot, McShane
Fabregas, Ballack, Diarra, Muamba, Smertin
Rooney, Defoe, Berbatov
Any opinions on my team.
ps:
I have a team in the Guardian fantasy league, I tried the league name and password you provided but it does not work.
My first go and changed my lineup a bit.. Any thoughts on:
Reina
Laursen, Wes Brown, Hyypia
Nasri, Kranjcar, Fabregas (C), Modric, Arteta
Van Persie, Yakubu,
Subs: Schwarzer, Glen Johnson, Scharner, Kitson
3-5-2
Maybe a gamble with the new guys Nasri and Modric? Everton are worrying me a little with seeming a bit thin on midfielders and Arteta looking to get match fit. Also is Van Persie going to get the goals this season? I was tempted with Anelka or even Robbie Keane. Also Carrick a safe bet for 7m in midfield crossed my mind.
