The eagle-eyed amongst you might have noticed that the featured articles above now include a newly published guide on selecting a goalkeeper and a defence.

This latest lengthy word explosion can be found here while you can also find some of my earlier guides on this handy little page.

Got Bendtner and defoe as forwards,do you think bendtner will start. He is flying pre season?

Could you do a review of the Sun’s dreamteam? It is by far the biggest and offers the most prizes. My team; Kirkland, Agger, Neville, Richards Bosingwa, Ballack, Modric, Young, Torres, Adebayor, Bent.

Gavin McDonald August 1 at 8:31 am

I would put bale in place of agger, looks like bale is going to played in left midfield so good op for points.

Fabio Capello August 1 at 9:01 am

If anyone is looking for a good, cheap defender, then I recommend Bolton’s Steinsson:

He looked very strong last season, and it was partly thanks to him that Bolton stayed up.

He looks good going forward – he plays on the right wing for Iceland.
He’s even scored against Brazil! (but then again so has Greame Le Saux)

Any news on who will be the ‘Boro goalie, or do you think they are bringing in a new one.

keith jenks August 1 at 2:20 pm

I think Turnbull looks slight favourite.

Marknlard August 3 at 5:38 pm

Turnbull is truly awful, struggled on loan in the championship last year. If they don’t buy a new one, don’t buy any Middlesbro defenders.

Mark, I’ve had Ricketts for ages as my benchwarming fifth defender, but I note that Hull have bought a couple more people in (Mendy and Gardener). Any thoughts on where this leaves my man? A small feature on which ultra cheap players you think will be sure starters would be really useful, as its a problem we all face.

Steve August 1 at 7:01 pm

Mark I’d like to echo BB’s request. A little section on the 4.0 and 4.5 defenders that you think will deffo play.

Whats peoples opinions of the wildcard? For the last 2 years i’ve always waited for the backlog of double fixtures to come in and then bring as many people who will be playing twice….and its not worked once due to players being rested….

So how about the tactic of just picking a team for the first 4-5 games and maximise points from the start, and wildcard after that when you’ve an idea of the starting line ups and the transfer window has finished?

So i’m toying with…

Cech

Clichy Lescott Carvalho Cahill

M Taylor Fabergas Arteta

Drogba Yakubu Van Persie

Subs Myhill, Geovanni, Mullins, Figueroa

And will don’t doubt change by time anyone reads this lol

Ollie August 1 at 5:40 pm

Is it better to go with a good all round squad with good subs, or buy the cheapest possible subs, and get the best first team?

Tom August 1 at 7:13 pm

I’ve always been one to opt for a good all round squad, as generally it allows for more versatility in terms of players being dropped, or getting injured, as you’re not forced to make double transfers. If you have a good selection of subs, who will play every match, and will come in to replace players who have horrid fixtures, I think it’s definitely worth that extra bit of cash spent on the bench. I like to think that when you pick your first XI each week, the subs are taken into strong consideration. It’s a squad game.

Steve August 1 at 6:55 pm

Ollie, I’d say the second option, but you need the cheapeast possible playing subs. That way their value should hold if not go up whilst they are sat on the bench. After a few weeks you can then swap them for non playing subs who’s price will have dropped. I find this a useful way of getting in some of the players that you couldn’t afford at the start

Dave Rogers August 1 at 7:05 pm

I reckon your wildcard strategy is sound – the guy who won our league used his wildcard in week 3 last year (and was slated for it at the time!) but I think I will be saving mine for when Ron is back in order to rejig the team effectively in order to accomodate him….

Pop Ooh Yeah F.C. August 1 at 8:06 pm

In the last 2 seasons my wildcard has gone within the first 6 weeks, and it hasn’t caused me too many problems, infact you can cause more problems by hanging on to your wildcard too long.

I agree with holding it back a while this season, exactly for the same reason….Ronaldo.

Goat August 1 at 7:06 pm

i’d go for the second option as well. but maybe not the cheapest of the cheapist playing subs as although their prices may rise as everyone brings them in in a flurry it won’t be sustained and so the price rise won’t be that big. best to go for the slow burners where everyone gets slowly more and more tempted as they perform. that ways there’s a steady number of transfers in and a consistent increase in price.

so i’d say spend a fraction more and try and get a bargain like figueroa for wigan (if he really does play) or smith in midfield for newcastle as with viduka and owen carrying injuries and martins mourning the loss of his mum he’s bound to get a go up front.

Cerberus August 2 at 2:59 pm

The only problem is that Alan Smith is a shite player. Last season he did not score a single goal, and only had 3 assists in 2396 minutes on the field.

Ollie August 2 at 5:07 pm

He wont play and hasnt scored since 2005.
