This Week’s Scout Picks

It’s Friday night. It’s much later than I should have left it. It’s scout picks time.

I did have every intention of bringing these to you a lot earlier but, as I’ve mentioned before, things have been pretty pretty manic at work this week (I’m typing this from my desk). Enough of the chitchat though, here’s the deal.

For those new to this, first of all – hello, thanks for coming. Secondly, get your pinch of salt ready as I recommend a team for this week’s set of games. Over in the right hand menu you’ll see my selection for the week and if you read on you’ll find the daft logic behind it all.

For regulars, I ought to tell you that I’ve moved the goal posts a little this season. Now I’m allowing myself three players form each club (although I’ll try to avoid it at all costs). Plus I’m giving myself three subs with which to offer cheap alternatives should you need a budget option.

As before, this selection is not geared to a particular fantasy game and is not made with budget restrictions in mind.

Without further ado..I give you the first picks of the season. Exciting.

I’ve gone for Jaaskeleinan in goal with Bolton looking strong for a cleanie at home to new boys Stoke. By the way, I expect the reporters covering this game to be clutching short straws alongside their biros. I’m betting now that Sky Sports give this one to Merson.

We’ve some strong options in defence with United, Chelsea and Everton all looking good for clean sheets. United will surely sweep Newcastle to one side and with Keegan’s side struggling for attacking options. The likes of Ferdinand and Vidic look a no-brainer but I’ve gone for Evra this week though as he’s certain to play and could even take a left midfield berth, increasing his potential for assists.

Alongside Evra, we have one of last season’s favourite goalscoring centre backs – Villa’s Martin Laursen and Jagielka of Everton. Both have decent home games against sides that are low on confidence – City and Blackburn. I can see two clean sheets here with plenty of goal threat from Laursen and a possible added bonus of a midfield role for Jagielka. Terry completes a strong back four – I can’t see Pompey breaching the Chelsea back line, even with Bosingwa out injured. With a 4-5-1 expected from Harry, I see this being a comfortable 2-0 win for Scolari’s opener.

That match will hopefully see some points for Lampard who claims a midfield role. Fresh from signing a new contract, Lampard will be itching to prove himself to the Stamford Bridge faithful. I can see him kissing his bade on 23 minutes after his 20-yard goes in off Diop’s arse.

I’ve opted for a likely regular alongside him in the shape of Villa’s Young. He’ll be the chief attacking threat to City and should come out of the game with at least an assist in a decent Villa win.

I’ve opted for Taylor of Bolton at home to Stoke and Downing at home to Spurs. Both will be prominent at set plays and Downing may well be up against a makeshift right back in the shape of Zokora at the Riverside.

Up front I’ve with the strong combination of Tevez at home to Newcastle and Adeabyor at home to West Brom. United and Arsenal look likely to be the top scorers this week and these two strikers are in good form and should be at the centre of most of the attacking play.

On the bench as alternatives I have Ashton of West Ham at home to Wigan. He’s shown good form in pre-season but could find it hard against a Wigan side who could snatch a surprise win.

Osman is my spare mid-price man in midfield. I can see the Everton vs Blackburn game as a tight 1-0 but Osman could make the difference playing off the front man Yakubu. Faubert is another good option here and for a real outside bet, I’ve got an inkling that Seol could start pushed up alongside Zamora for Fulham at Hull. Could be worth a flutter.

In defence I’ve opted for Tottenham’s Bale. He could well be a star selection this season if he holds down a regular start. I’m not so sure on whether he’ll be in from the off at the Riverside, or if Tottenham came come away with a result, so I’m leaving him benched for this week as a precaution.

Finally, if you’re looking for an FPL captain (seems strange not to follow this with Ronaldo’s name) then Adebayor, Lampard and Tevez are very strong contenders and it’s got to be one of these three for me. I’m opting for Adebayor as I see Arsenal conceding and needing 3-4 goals to see of West Brom.

That’s it for now. Pick the bones out of that. I’m off home to scout for some late night team news. I’ll try

  2. Not long to go now last bit of tinkering before the start of the season:

Either Van Persie, Anelka, Berbatov up front?

    Either Osman, M.Taylor in midfield

    Either Clichy, Laursen, or Bale

Cech or Friedel in goal? Or someone else.

    Please reply A.S.A.P Thanks.

RVP if stays fit will be the better option long term re Anelka
    M. Taylor in midfield
Clichy long term, Laursen short term, bale medium term
    Cech in goal

    Sorted!

    nathan,

Cech, bale, Osman and RVP upfront out of that lot.

I’ll be honest. I’ve lost track of who Berbatov’s even playing for.

Why do people feel the need to ask what everyone thinks of their team? The vast majority I magine don’t give a flying F**k.

  3. interesting you seem to think west brom will score , i have gallas playing and osman on the bench , should i swap ?

    [Reply]

  4. van persie , osman , clichy , Reina

thats who i’d choose out of those options.

    [Reply]

  5. Most reports i’ve seen suggest Rooney is going to start against Newcastle. Does anyone think this will be the case? If so am i mad to be considering him as captain? He usually fills his boots against Newcastle.

    [Reply]

  6. guys,

reina and johnson or howard and bale???????????????????????

    The Dog

    [Reply]

  7. I would gamble and say Howard and Bale what about my question(s) above!

    [Reply]

  8. On Rooney

well it seems as though he will play. He has been doubling up on training sessions to be fit for this game so it seems as though he may play. However , to have him as captain , or for that matter to choose him at all , would be a bold move. Especially seems as man utds fixtures arent great.

Adebayor seems to be a much better option especially with fixtures and stuff.

But if you do choose to have rooney then i would choose an alternative captain as he may be brought off around the 60-70 minute mark if they have any sort of decent lead.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

i already have adebayor and plan to swap rooney for torres next week. I wanted to get a man u player in beacuse i think they will stuff newcastle. do you think tevez may be a better capt? Adebayor has been my choice all week, but arsenal aren’t at their best and marks article about the weakness of newcastle has got me thinking

    [Reply]

  9. Do you think Kitson will start for Stoke?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

yep , they paid 5 million i think. They would be stupid not to play him

    [Reply]

  10. Tevez, Van Persie or Anelka.

Also I;m thinking of bringing in Walcott he should get quite a few points tommorow and only cost 7.0 Million.

Which is better D.Bent, Van Persie, Alves or Walcott, Tevez, Bent?

    Please reply a.s.a.p thanks.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Nathan why not Alves, Ashton and Tevez if you must have Tevez in?? Personally i think 2 into 3 doesn’t go and if United do sign Berbatov then surely Berbatov, Rooney and Tevez will be rotated…Alves and Ashton will be first choice throughout the season should they stay fit…Bent could be rotated if Spurs bring in another forward and Walcott is more a winger than aforward…Just my opinion but personally i’d go for Adebayor, Ashton and Adebayor

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    Well, Adebayor is good.

    [Reply]

  11. D.Bent, Van Persie, Alves

    [Reply]

  12. Thanks Kev one last question who to Captain Van Persie or Lampard, who is your captain?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I have adebayor so he is my captain , As for them two… id say that lampard has a higher risk as pompy seem to be able to keep a pretty sound defence ( 0-0 vs man u in 120 mins) So van persie may be the better options, as mark says they should score 3 or 4, and im sure he will be amongst the points.

    [Reply]

  13. Thanks for the read Mark.

I’m still trying to decide on Torres or Tevez. I know Torres doesn’t score many goals on his travels, so I’m kind of thinking Tevez against a dodgy looking Newcastle. The armband will be going to Adebayor.

Nathan, it’s a close call, but I’d go for your first choice - I really fancy Alves to do the business this season, Bent is on Fire and RVP will be in the mix against the Baggies.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Torres was the first name on my pre-season teamsheet, and then when my final team was picked he was the first one to come out. Sunderland at the Stadium of Light will not be easy and the Standard Liege game didn’t fill me with much confidence about Liverpool at this moment in time.

I am just wondering about the impact of Keane on everything - he has to fit in with Liverpool and him and Torres have to get a rapport going. Gerrard playing off the heels of Torres worked wonders last season - I am holding back on Liverpool until I see their first couple of games.

My final team has three Bolton players in it - like Mark I fancy them to beat Stoke.

    [Reply]

  14. quick late query - anyone know whether the following might start?
Baines, Bosingwa, Assou-Ekoto. I’ve heard conflicting reports.

    [Reply]

  15. so Bosingwa actually injured then? Bbc website says “Portugal internationals Jose Bosingwa and Deco are set to make their debuts.”

    [Reply]

  16. Baines is the most certain one.

    [Reply]

  17. Think Baines will and Bosingwa can’t be match fit surely?

Is Tevez a must because I don’t know where their Creative play is going to come from (they are not the same team at all without Ronaldo and Rooney) so I was thinking Bent, Alves and Van Persie. Thoughts?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I’m a bit reluctant to splash £10m on a striker who’s up against Portsmouth, Liverpool & Chelsea in 3 of the first 5 gameweeks + misses gw 3 altogether.
Then again, based purely on week 1 fixtures vs Newcastle he could be the leading scorer

    [Reply]

  18. Nathan, I’ve plumped for Tevez simply because Rooney is only a possibility to start and because Man Utd slaughtered Newcastle in both games last season. I wasn’t so keen until we were told that Keegan’s team was down to its bare bones.

Van Persie has to be in the thick of things v West Brom and Bent has to be chosen on pre-season form alone (argument about the informativeness of pre-season games…yawn..yawn).

I took Alves out because I thought Adebayor/Bent/Tevez would contribute more goals.

    [Reply]

  19. Thought i’d just say that it’s brilliant to see the Scout Picks back Mark, oh how i missed them… And now, to questioning everything and anyone i’ve picked in the past month based on your comments. Ace.

    [Reply]

  20. Any advice on the following selection issues would be great. Ade/bent/ashton or rvp/bent/tevez. Or even one more scenario, switch arteta for osman, them have ade/bent/tevez. Just looking short term at the mo.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

You have to have Adebayor in for the WBA game, but Tevez could equal him v Newcastle. First three would appear to be the best choice over a longer term period.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

That’s EXACTLY what I’m trying to figure out.

Option 1: best option beyond GW1. Ashton seems like good value but I’m not completely convinced that he / WH will perform.

Option 2: I must admit that I never considered Tevez until reading the scout picks due to MU’s tough start, but I’m now tempted to go with it and make him captain. None of my competitors is likely to have him in their team, so if he performs… do you have any other MU players in your squad? Probably best to avoid him if you do. They’ll all probably be best shipped out before GW2. Also there’s not much chance of Tevez’s value rising, given MU’s fixtures, if you’re concerned about that kind of thing.

Decisions…. let me know what you go with.

    [Reply]

  21. Rvp Bent Tevez I would but what the rest of your team like?

Tevez and Walcott or Van Persie and Alves?

    [Reply]

  22. Thanks, Mark!
Always read ur picks first before finalizing my team ;)

    [Reply]

  23. im with bent/ashton/ade…

Was really thinking Jagielka this week but cant help but feel there is so much negativity around the club with no signings and so many players out…things dont look good so i was wondering if ppl here would have Jags over Clichy?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Well the media seems to have made its mind up on this one but as the Dog says, it’s the same team as last year. Ok so they’ve sold their number two striker and half their midfield is injured, but I think their defence will be just as hard to break down as last season, and if not Jags could get involved at the other end.

I wouldn’t rule out the Baggies getting a goal at the Emirates either.

    [Reply]

  24. i’m going with jags, this is the same team as last year, and they were pretty good then. And jags in the middle…its a no-brainer.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Thank you X-Ray Dog, what are your thoughts on a Arsenal defender then? i thought they would be good for a clean sheet against west brom?

    [Reply]

  25. Tevez and Walcott or Van Persie and Alves?

Please repl as soo as possible thanks.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I would go with Van Persie and Alves. Simply because Walcott will not start. Thats not to say he wont come on as a sub and score a few points in the first four weeks. Also Tevez will not play week 3 as Man Utd have no game.

    [Reply]

  26. I put Jagielka in because I couldn’t afford Lescott (FPL game) - in another Fantasy game that I am playing he is actually classified as a midfielder!

Alexi - Clichy would be a great shout; his assists would be some reassurance in light of Arsenal’s defensive shortcomings. Saying that I fancy an Arsenal cleansheet tomorrow.

    [Reply]

  27. Alexi,

Arsenal are always worth a shout, but the midfield is looking dodgy at the moment and west brom used baseball bats to destroy teams in league one.

    The Dog

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

So i guess an Everton defender is a must…Thank you guys, much appreciated!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I agree. West brom can either play football or use battering rams, depending on what suits them. I think they have a strong chance of not only staying up but actually doing quite well this season.

    [Reply]

  28. RVP Alves

    [Reply]

  29. Well, i reckon i’ve got more chance of guessing the poirot murderer than getting the striking options right! As i said short term is priority at the mo and really fancy tevez to be amongst a newcastle whopping. Is it worth sacrificing arteta for osman or ade for rvp or the additional points for a load of transfers after gw2?

    [Reply]

  30. Is Glen Johnson worth having as a long term prospect? Might play Luke Young is he a better bet?

Also Lampard or Van Persie for Captain?

    [Reply]

  31. Question of the night!
Is Bosingwa fit to start tomorrow? By all reports he is gonna make his debut

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

i’d say no, but can’t find any up to date news

    [Reply]

  32. Mark, you’ve saved me again. I’ve just logged on to swap Fabs for Deco and the first thing i see is your link reporting Decos injury. Looks like Bentley then. Right Adebayor for Captain as you all think Arsenal will bag a few goals. Hmm Tevez or Rooney then. If Rooney starts i fancy him to get more points than Tevez.

    [Reply]

  33. Seems a lot of Everton fans think that Baines may be pushed up to play LM tomorrow against Blackburn. If so then surely he’ll be great value at 5.0M compared to Jagielka’s 6.0M. Is it just me or are the majority of people on here very reactive and take very short term views??? 2 weeks ago no-one was talking about Tevez..As soon as Mark mentions he may be a decent option everyone wants Tevez in…Bent scores a few in pre season and everyone wants Bent in…In my humble opinion you have to look longer term..Last year Sibierski set off like a house on fire and look what happened to him..Don’t be fooled into picking up players after GW1 just because they happened to score or play well in the first week..There is some truth in the old adage form is temporary, class is permanent..I’m not saying the likes of Tevez and Bent won’t do well but i think there are a lot of sheep on here and we’re all picking the same teams..From coming on here you’d think there were only 20-25 players playing in the premiership and everyone is just picking various permutations from the same pool…

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

i’ve been stung in previous seasons by picking a team for the long term. i got my best run of games last season after i’d found this site and started studying the opponents over the next 2 or 3 weeks. Tevez is a short term option for me based on playing weak opponents at home. Marks advice is usually pretty sound too.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

It all depends on the kind of game you play; some people are prepared to buy someone for just one game (say Rooney v Newvcastle) while others simply aren’t.

Some players that lack class you feel it’s best to avoid, and I tend to agree with you - Zamora the season before last is another player that springs to mind after he got off to a great start - but then again if I’d have got on these players early enough when they were in the middle of their prolific runs… and wasn’t it that Sibierski reverted to playing in midfield, after he’d been playing out of position up front, that saw his stock reduce?

In terms of Baines, I can see why he could be a good gamble, but equally I can see why people feel uncomfortable selecting him after he hardly played last year.

Anyway, which players outside the ones discussed loads here are you interested in? We might all want to change our teams accordingly, we’re a fickle bunch.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Truth be told there can’t be many players we’ve not talked about at one point or other, lol is quite funny to see how similar my team is to the scout pick…give or take 3 players…but i imagine it will do as i’m going for an idea of a gameweek 4/5 wildcard so going for purely short term, hoping to earn some cash on form players…

I know Man U miss gameweek 3, but as 90% seem to have figuero or whatever his name is and de ridder and Wigan playing Hull in week 3, i’ve come to the conclusion i can just swap out 2 manure for them for the week, keeping my free transfer for a “banker” each week…

Roll on half 11 so i can stop messing lol

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Ha ha…Some of the players i’m interested in that don’t get a huge mention on here are Andy Reid at Sunderland. I think he’ll be an ever present this year and he is their playmaker in the middle. I’m thinking Sunderland have a much better season. Also Zoltan Gera at Fulham and Kim at WBA. I’m going to keep my eye on Kim but i think at 4.5M he could be a bargain if he is played in the middle just off a striker. Not sure how regularly he’ll play but he’s definitely one to keep an eye on…I think Nani will be a great shout this season..The only problem with that is when the fixtures turn nice for him and he’s back from suspension Ronaldo will be back - but he is a good alternative to Ronaldo…Faubert is another but he’s become more popular on here recently. Upfront Zaki at Wigan, Murphy at Sunderland (played out of position last season at right wing and now spearhead of a 4-5-1) and Vaughn at Everton appeal as cheap/mid priced alternatives. Derbyshire too if Blackburn do let Santa Cruz go. At the back Figueroa was my great find till everyone cottoned on but Emerton at Blackburn will play right wing until they sign a new winger and they have Hull at home in GW2 if you’re looking short term. I’m sure Ivanovic at Chelsea will feature at Chelsea this season as i can’t see Carvalho and Terry staying fit all year - so he’s one to keep an eye on and i think Huth at Middlesbrough is great value at 4.5M. I’m not saying i have all these in my team but they are players that don’t get a great deal of mention on here who could score well this season and who i’ll be keeping an eye on.

    [Reply]

  34. Everyone is convinced the Baggies will get turned over. LOL

    [Reply]

  35. True there Richard but Bent should do good this season if Berbatov goes and I don’t rate Tevez enough for 10 Million and Alves will be on fire this season, also work out how many points RVP would get if he was fit for a whole season it’s about 200 odd!

    [Reply]

  36. Bentley (away to Boro) V Downing (home to Spurs)

I’m kina edging towards Downing. What u reckon?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

i’m edging towards bentley based on pre season, but boro can be pretty tough at home.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

The thing that put me off Downing is GW2 v Liverpool. But then Bentley has a tough GW3 v Chelsea. Erm… Arteta?

    I’d go with Bentley.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I’m hoping Fab will be fit by the time Spurs play Chelski. I just needed someone to take fabs place for a few weeks. Next weeks transfer is tevez for torres so having bentley not downing makes sense as spurs two fixtures are more friendly and i don’t want to spend points on a double transfer.

    [Reply]

  37. I’ve got adebayor and tevez up front. Tevez i’m getting rid of for Alves before game week three…Man U have a free week while boro play stoke.

Anyone know if Cahill is suspended? If he is I’m gonna need to get a new defender……

  41. Anyone got any tips on who to have as Defensive Midfield on the Guardian one?

I have just replaced Essien with Barry and have money left over to upgrade my second DM.

I’m just wondering whether its worth bothering putting £5.5m for a reserve in this position? There don’t seem to be many great options.

Maybe just get Etuhu at Sunderland and spend the money elsewhere?

    Howard, Laursen, G. Johnson/Woodgate

  46. I am playing the Yahoo Fantasy and you get one trade a week free so I wonder if much of what you are doing is good for the long term because you will just need to trade them off in the near future. The expense of a trade is too great. Torres you can keep for the long haul, same with Howard. I love your site though, it has really helped me and the proof will be in the pudding! I joined your league as well, what name do you go by in the fantasy game?

    [Reply]

  49. As I have mentioned before I am new to this but this article has given me confidence that I’m on the right track as my team is eerily close to the one mentioned. I do have some questions for the seasoned pros though. My team is as follows:

    Jaaskelainen (Schwarzer)

    Evra, Laursen, Shorey (Cahill)

Lampard, Taylor, Bentley, A. Young (Seol)

    Adebayor, Tevez, Zamora

My question to all of you is this:

Is it silly to play Shorey/Laursen together or should I downgrade Cahill and upgrade Shorey to Jagielka, or

Downgrade Cahill and upgrade Seol to Faubert, or

Leave it the way it is.

I like Shorey’s potential and I feel as though Laursen is a must have, I just don’t know if it’s stupid to play them together. I picked Seol purely as a cash cow if he blitz’s against Hull but I think Faubert is potentially the higher points earner.

I really would appreciate all your help on this one guys and thankyou all beforehand.

    [Reply]

  50. Petrov or Downing?

    [Reply]

  51. Great site.

It would seem that the Spurs should rack up the goals against Middlesbrough seeing as they don’t have a quality keeper. Heck, they’ve got two guys both valued at 4.0 and couldn’t decide between them till the last minute.

Bent, Bentley, Modric, Giovanni …. I’m expecting a blowout.

Side note: Best value, Luke Young for Villa. Where else are you going to find a first choice defender on a team capable of finishing in the top 6 for only 4.5 mill.

Laursen. He could be on a role.

Arteta. Better fixtures, class player, hopefully over his injury problems.

    Taylor, definitely.

  55. Not much talk about Damian Duff. I know Newcastle are off form and have a tough first few weeks but he is relatively cheap in most games and will actually be playing as a striker for the first few weeks.

Im struggling between him and Matt Taylor at the moment.

Also, do we think Agger is a safe bet or is Benitez going to rotate him with Skertl?

  56. Last minute tinkering…

Who’ll start for Boro in goal?

    Turnbull or Jones?

Lots of differing views in newspapers this morning!

    PLEASE help asap.

I’ve been seeing Turnbull mentioned more often then not… but if you need a keeper at 4.0 mill, I’d pass on both of them. Either one will get killed by the Spurs attack this week.

Look at Schwarzer who has a much better match up against Hull.

I’m looking longer term as a backup keeper, but you’d rate Schwarzer over the Boro boys?

Actually, for my backup keeper I’m going with Myhill from Hull. I only plan to keep him for the first 4 games (Fulham, Blackburn, Wigan and Newcastle). It’s a bet on the chances Hull might pull off a clean sheet or two out of the group. A longshot, but Schwarzer is owned by 37% of the teams and Myhill only 1.3%.

Just looking to bank a little cash when I switch later. It’ll give me more options for future upgrades.

    Lampard.

I’m an Arsenal fan and I sense a very dull performance from them today (especially with their depleted midfield) and I’m expecting a 1-1 draw.

    You heard it here first!

(Unless this prediction turns out wrong..)

  59. Could be 1-1, could be 5-0.

Adeayor & Bent or RVP & Tevez taking into account the first 2 or 3 games? I had the first two but Mark has got me wondering.

  60. Roll on 11.30 a.m. - I think the credit crunch is reflected in the prices of the players this season. Took Tevez out after much thought - £10m is a vastly inflated value and if Rooney plays he may steal the limelight. I’ve gone for Ashton to free up some cash to buy in better defenders.

Anyway from a betting point of view, it is too early in the season to be confident about anything (not that I was ever confident halfway or towards the end of the season about my betting prowess!).

Just a couple of quid today on a win treble - Bolton, Tottenham and Aston Villa. Don’t know what the overall price is but it’ll be worth a punt.
