Villa Pair Come Through Reserve Outing

Villa’s Steve Sidwell and Carlos Cuellar both turned out for the reserves tonight as they step up their comebacks from injury.

Both players have been nursing calf injuries but complted the full 90 minutes in tonight’s 2-1 victory at Stoke. They are now set to figure in O’Neill’s first team plans when he takes his side to visit Spurs on September 13.

While Sidwell is set to face an uphill struggle to earn a starting role with Petrov and Barry currently performing well in midfield, Cuellar could have more luck displacing Davies alongside Laursen in defence. With Davies helping Villa to keep a clean sheet last weekend against Liverpool, Cuellar could well find himself having to wait a little longer for a start.

    Friedel, Schwarzer
    Clichy, Bosingwa, Cuellar (Figueroa, Shittu)
    Young, Bentley, Arteta, Downing, Gamst
    Berbatov, Defoe, Zaki

Have just brought in Berbatov for Adebayor, so I have an extra 2.2 in the bank
The plan is to use the extra to bring in Fabregas and shore up the defense/goal a touch
(I’ve used my once weekly transfers on more important matters than Cuellar:
    gw2 - Clichy for Evra
    gw3 - Defoe for Crouch
    gw4 - Berbatov for Adebayor

  7. I think some people are being a bit unfair on someone who is only doing what everyone else is doing (albeit a bit more often) - offering his opinion. Is panning Fran the latest bandwagon to jump on

Anyway, Cuellar in the Villa defence is likely to boost their clean sheet performance significantly, so I’d expect those with L. Young / Laursen / etc. to start seeing more points. Goody :-)

I read an article where Davies was upset that he was expected to make way for Cuellar. He thinks he’s playing well enough and i’d tend to agree - i don’t think MON will just ship Davies out, i expect there’ll be some rotation.

Agree on the Fran-baiting, he certainly adds a bit of red-top spice… (assuming he reads these, it seems this is where most of the opinion comes from?) It’s great to see a FF player so confident and enthusiastic as opposed to my pessimistic, injury-expectant vitriol. Brilliant.

  8. Hi,

Thought you guys would be interested in knowing that the following have been added to the FPL website:

Robinho - Striker - 9.0m - shame hes a striker, price seems fair.

Paylyuchenko - Striker - 8.5m - be interesting 2c how quick he setlles.

Riera - Midfielder - 7.0m - wasnt impressive in his first spell but a very tempting price for a top 4 side!

Fellaini - Midfielder - 6.5m - looks a great prospect, not sure he will be a FPL regular scorer however.

Xisco - Striker - 7.5m - looked sharp in the Real v Depor game but probs at newcastle make him unattractive at the moment!

Hope this info is helpful guys,

    J

Great work there JonnyH! I reckon those pricings are far more realistic than the other FF sites. And like you say, the only decent points prospect looks like Riera, bearing in mind he’s become a Spanish international since leaving Man City.

Shame Robinho is classed as a striker. I still think he’ll be better than most are giving him credit for.

Hey Raf - have heard that the international break between GW 7-8 is a good time. It roughly coincides with Ronaldos return and it gives you a chance to see how the new players adapt, which teams will struggle, and a chance to get the bargain players whilst they are still bargains.

I’ve been tempted to use it now, but think I can hold out for a while. My friend used it last week to much disaster (very few points) and he’s now got a few players crocked (Torres, Cruz).

    [Reply]

    taken,

i was thinking of maybe saving the wild card until january, man city are bound to bring in a couple of big names………

gw 7-8 sounds good though…..and whats a team without ronaldo?!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    It’s not a team at all as he’s 2 players in 1.

Think it’s a big risk basing your Wilcard use around Man City’s transfer policy… they might not get any big names at all. They can f right of with any bids for Torres that’s for sure!!!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

was looking at the 27th sep to use my wildcard, as i think if I can set up a good team then, prices will start to rise over the international week which is one week later. Would anyone suggest keeping the wild card until the break (on the 5th I think). By juggling players over the 2 weeks i might be able to make a bit of money, but dont know how likely this is to do.

Here’s something else to consider. When the fixtures start to bunch up in Feb/Mar a lot of teams play twice in the same week. A couple of seasons ago Middlesbrough played 3 times in the same game week - pitty they were crap though :-(

    [Reply]

  10. Hi Raf and others!
I think the best time to use the wildcard is when your team is rubbish, you have too many injuries and are close to the bottom of your league! Using the wildcard when you are top or near top of your league can be a waste unless you time it to get 6/7 very high price rising players.
As the saying goes: ” You can’t win the league early on but you can definitely lose it” Stay near the top of your own personal league by all counts to give you a chance of winning it!!!

  13. Hi Raf….about 144 at the moment. Not too great but I have lost a few points improving my team. My team value is 101.5 and that should be enough to challenge for the title by December I hope in my league.
If your team is half good then don’t panic. I notice last season with my team that I would get the highest score when most of my players were playing at home. One week I got over 120 points last year! But great players average 50-60 every week, give a few. Try to buy at least one player each week that has their price rising and good future fixtures - these are what the top 500 teams do in the FPL. How many points do you have Raf and your team value?

  19. i’m not sure peoples obcession with team values is a good thing. Surely if you have a good player and he goes up in value you’re not going to get rid anyway. At the end of last season lescott and laursen had gone up massively but who was actually going to get rid?. the top teams dont usually have a very high value anyway. its like house prices. great if it goes up but pointless if you’re not moving anyway.

    but maybei’m just B***hing because i’m only worth 100.5 :)

  21. I have amassed 153 points so far with a team value of exactly 100 million. I have to say that this is the most exciting FPL for the last couple of seasons with no stand out points earner (well untill the Portugese guy gets back). There is so many permutations you could go with and i have already had a 12 points hit in the first three weeks as fixtures and digesting managers quotes, team tactics, formation, etc.

It’s great to read the pointers on here and see what peoples interpretation of the current undertakings are, as these are a great way i decide whether or not to transfer certain player(s) into my FPL team. In many ways, I choose not to ‘go with the flow’ but try looking beyond the obvious.

For example, Zaki is the flavour of the month at the moment, with his value undoubtedly going up but a long term investment, as mentioned on another thread??? Not for myself, can you imagine Zaki in the winter months with the cold, wet and wind in wigan!!!! You may find even the great(?) players might not be too partial to these elements….

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

maybe i’m just soft on him because of his lovely 16 points last week. but you’re right. i’m sure we all remember elanos freefall in winter. brucie will probably get him a nice pair of mittens though

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Zaki spent a few months at Lokomotiv Moscow and whilst he didn’t play a game, i’m certain he trained there - so i wouldn’t be so sure he’ll be shocked by the cold weather…

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

The winter wont be any worse than the summer we have just had! So Zaki will manage I’m sure… and as someone said he played in Russia where they have temps of -30 degrees. Although they sent him out on loan soon after they bought him!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Thanks for that CK and Phil Pino, was not aware that he had signed for Moscow, though in fairness, he never played for those guys at Moscow. He is a player I have to admit was excellent at Hull last week but there again, Wigan where playing Hull and with no disrespect to Hull, they will struggle and most likely get relegated and so find it hard to read too much into that one particular game. I wish well for those undertaking Zaki in there FPL. Mind you if Stan Collymore is right about Zaki for the Golden Boot as he wrote in the Daily Mirror the other week, then I will retire from FPL and take up scrabble!!!!

Dave, your point is one that I am amazed no-one has mentioned - my team is only worth 100.2 but I have 173 points (amazing cos I always have shoite starts to the FPL season, this is my 7th). The big price players aren’t doing it this season thus far, so people banging on about transferring in people asap to get on top of price rises seems irrelevant at this moment in time to me. My actual squad is only worth 98.7 so i’ve got 1.5m to play with - but no-one massively priced seems worth bringing in…

My team is Rblyness VII fyi…15th so far

    [Reply]

  27. Lads, I’m not convinced by all this money making objective. If you make money well and good but… to actually GET the money you need to sell your players before they go down in value again which usually means they are still doing well… so why would you sell players who are doing well for you??
Surely its just best to try and get in the good players and get rid of the bad/injured ones and just aim for maximum points? Making money is just a by product of this..

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

agreed. glad i’m not alone in this (see above)

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

It’s a form thing though. For instance, Micah Richards shot up over the first couple of months last season. Man City got a bit rubbish, and suddenly he was overpriced. Also useful if a team has a month of good fixtures. Even if you want to keep players, it still pays to conserve all those little 0.1 rises and drops as they do add up.

On your earlier post Higgo, I bought and sold Laursen and Lescott last year on the basis of form and fixtures respectively. Laursen worked out fine but Lescott kept on scoring, the weirdly shaped headed git that he is.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

exactly. but people dont seem to be looking at form and fixtures. it just seems to be money. commercialism has even come to fantasy football. I’m expecting the coca cola scout next year mark ;)

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I appreciate what you are saying mate but surely you shoul djust take in a player cos you think he will bag points NOT cos his value will rise. If both happen then great but I certainly would not want a player who rises in value cos of all the bandwagon jumpers but actually is shit, therefore he doesnt earn any extra points. That’s what this game is about, identifying those who will rise AND play well. Any plonker can buy someone who has scored 2 goals that day in anticipation of a rise… so you get .2m over 2 weeks and shit points..?!
I know there are a quite a few who think this is the way forward… I just can’t see it!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I think we may all be trying to argue similar points. The order I look at things when making transfers is:

    1. Will they score more points than the player I’ve got?
    2. Is the player I’ve got going to fall in price?
    3. Is the player I’m buying going to rise?
    4. Will it cost me 4 pts?

Scoring points is absolutely the key thing and always takes precedence. However, team value is important as the season goes on when you can afford one more big midfielder than those around you. Almost any player (appart from Ronnie last season) can be sold if you think that their value has become over-inflated or if they’re entering a patch of sticky fixtures, which is when you make the money.

Deco and Fab (I think). I’ve got both the Chelski free-kick hoggers myself and I’m trying to work out which to sell for Fab after next week.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

hmmm. fab is a guaranteed bonus darling but may not gain as many goals as previouly. downing is also bonus magnet and at heart of any middlesborough success. I would poss think about rotating both depending on fixtures. Deco is the cheap option and give you this flexability. personally i’m sticking with frank although i’m not sure if this is just stubbornness or not

    [Reply]

  29. Ok - Getting a lot of question here but think about these as possible answers:
Best transfer was/is Berbatov his price had already moved from 9.2 to 9.3 and due to go up again soon possibly Monday if he is not injured.
Now I had have some tips from the best fantasy football league player I know. He wins every league is goes into and every player fears him. I asked him what advice do I use to set up my team to at least challenge for the league. Here is what he said paraphrased of course:
    Goalkeepers:
Pick one solid goalkeeper like Reina and a good goalkeeper about 4.5 or below for cover.
    Defenders:
Pick two Chelsea defenders that plays regularly and a top class United defender or two if you want O’shea and then a cheap but good defender that scores goals. You can now play three world class defenders at the back.
    Midfielders:
Febregas, Deco, Gerrald(when fit) and two others like valancia, SWP, Lawrence, Ireland, Arteta, Bullard etc.
    Attackers:
Zaki(need), Berbatov(need), Roberts, RVP(if fit) Defoe, Carew you know the ones.
This is a very solid line up as they usually play regularly and earn well during the season. But the problem is matching these types of players to the fixtures and results……a lot of the time you will find that you’ll get over 15 points on the bench as you have selected the wrong players that week. This happened a lot last season! I hope this helps all you serious FPL players.

does this player win because he has a budget of 200 million?

    [Reply]

He’s what i think Fran has just said, paraphrased of course:

“Pick the best players according to fixtures & form. Try and fit that in within the budget.”

Sounds like a winning formula to me!

To clarify, i’m on the bandwagon with CK & higgo. I always pick players based on upcoming fixtures, never just because they’ll go up in price or because they’re the flavour of the month.

    [Reply]

  30. i’ve just gone through and totted up the rough value of this team, i’ve assumed you’ve taken 2 6mln mids and your 5th defender is a bench warmer

    6, 4
    6.5, 6, 6.5, 5, 4
    10, 9, 11.5, 6, 6
    6, 9.5, 9.5,

    =105.5mln

Im sorry but its easy to say you need each area to be strong but you cant do it with the budget constraint. For me, need to make sacrifices in defence and a cheap but solid and rotatable defence is the best way to do this…

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Thanks Dr. Rog, I was about to do something similar, but you’ve saved me the maths….

Only way you can usually get a team that is strong in all areas is if you build up the value of your team to £105+ mil-there’s no way you could start the season off with a team like that.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

you could always trade in one of the 9.5 strikers for a cheaper one, and downsize one of midfielders. For example Ashley Young seems unmissable this year and would be a cheaper alternative to Gerrard.

I’d say it’s better to watch form than stick too rigidly to a certain team structure, though.

    [Reply]

  31. I’d go Deco and Fab, even if Lamps does surpass Deco in the end, Fabregas will bring in far more than Downing

    [Reply]

  32. unrelated but anyone got any suggestions for 4.5-6 midfielder as deridder is getting no games for me. Newcastle look tempting but could be all over the place. Lawrence anyone? I had considered ireland but someone reckoned he wont be first choice mid

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Guthrie’s worth the price, I’m assuming you’re going to bench this midfielder almost all the time so it’s better to stick with someone cheap. Form-wise it’s pretty tough, and Rory Delap seems quite popular.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Higgo, fair call with Liam Lawrence but I fear that Stoke’s fixture list coming up is not the greatest and thus may not be so fruitful.

I am looking at Simon Davies at Fulham, valued at 5.8. Upcoming fixtures include Bolton, WHU and Sunderland at home with Blackburn and WBA away. I personally rate this player and the stats last season backed it u with 5 goals, 8 assists and 19 bonus points totalling 140 points. NOw are Fulham worth investing in, as undoubtedly they are a bottom half team??? Well they have an extra fixture to play than most, Have had a 3 week break on the back of a superb result against the hit and miss Gooners and for myself match in the main the potential of there next 5 opponents with reference to thier capabilities in the Premier League.Takes the set pieces and corners to add to the equation. They also have a good target man in Andy Johnson assuming he gets fit and Kamara.

    Worth a thought, eh???

By the way, I forget to mention that in last seasons FPL, Simon Davies achieved the most points/price ratio in the FPL midfield or attack, attained 36 starts and was 12th top earner on the bonus list for midfielders. Deffo, my dark horse.

  33. im in the same boat, i’d prob go for lawrence but got enough players for a full squad so instead my go for a £4m player to put on the bench who you can depend on playing and picking up 2 points if required. No point shelling out for someone decent if they’re just going to warm your bench 9 games out of 10

Its annoying tho as De Ridder seemed to be absolutely on fire in preseason….

  35. Hi Guys,

Took the plunge when returning from the pub last night and despite being on a half decent 160points played my wildcard (I know i know). That said, I’m pretty pleased with my team now:

James (excellent scores for 2 seasons)
    Bosingwa (unproven but stared well)
Laursen (great value & always dangerous)
Lescott (always seems to score and get bonus)
    bentley (will come good)
young (will be one of the top scorers)
Lampard (proven and still shooting all the time)
    Downing (solid)
    Defoe (will always score)
berbatov (price too good to ignore - will rise all season)
    Zaki (legend)

My main concern is the defence. I could rework it by changing downing to bullard and changing the back 4 to cech, carra, ferdinand and carvalho

    so:
option1)James, Laursen, lescott, Bosingwa, downing OR
option2)cech, Carra, carvalho, R.Ferdinand and Bullard.

    Would really appreciate your thoughts……

I used my wildcard too and while I might regret it later, I think there was sound reason as lots of players with obvious rising value with great potential for points in the next 4-5 fixture periods. And now my team is positioned where I can make a move for Renaldo in 2 moves if necessary (although the jury is out on that).

Im weak at keeper though with Jaskelaanen and Schwarzer but have .5 in reserve to improve that. Good fixtures to alternate between the two in the next 5-6 periods so should be okay for a while.

  39. Looking good your team Mr T, the example I gave above does more or less work from the start of the season before the prices goes up - Gerrald is injured so you can’t get him!!! However here is one for new recruits who should have made some money in the previous weeks - tell me what you think?:

    Goalkeeper: Reina 6.0 Schwarer 4.0 = 10.0

    Defenders: Carvalho 6.5 Ferdinand 7.0 Bosingwa 6.2 Hangeland 4.6 Figueroa 4 = 28.3

    Midfield: Fletcher 5.6 Valencia 5.9 Fabregas 9.9 Deco 9.4 Young 8.5 = 38.3

    Foward: Berbatov 9.3 Defoe:8.0 Zaki 6.2 = 23.5
    Total 100.1

This way you can play a devastating 3-4-3 formation!!! But you will have to guess who would be captain and you will find that you have over 15 points waiting on the bench in some weeks to your frustration!!!
    What do you all think?

Do you genuinely think he’s called Gerrald? Because you keep making the same mistake…

  41. Does anyone know what the games might be like statistically after an international break ? I am wondering if certain players might be a bit jaded and therefore less likely to score. I am considering going for a slightly controversial 5-3-2

    Schwarzer

    Bosingwa Carvalho Ferdinand Figueroa Kompany

    Young Arteta Lampard

    Zaki Alves

Bench : Reina, Geovanni, Berbatov, Gera

What do people think ? I suppose it is relying on a 0 - 0 draw between Chelsea and Man City which is probably quite unlikely. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  43. I love the way fran puts an exclamation mark at the end of half his sentences. Sounds like he is so excited at the most ridiculous things.

“This way you can play a devastating 3-4-3 formation!!! “” - that one got three. He shot his load there…

“Gerrald is injured so you can’t get him!!! ” - Same here

Still its quality. I think Gerrald is Gerrard’s evil twin

  45. Thanks for the comments all.

Dr. can see why Fab is in your team but rules of my mini league is that we can’t have any players from our most disliked team and as a spurs fan there is no ars*nal for me!

Any views on the 2 options I gave for defence combinations please????

Fran - no doubt that is a good squad but nothing more annoying than points on the bench, I go for a strong starting 11 and a reliable but very cheap bench ideally from 3 different teams to account for any fixture congestion (mine is Figueroa, Kim and griffen)

P.S Kind of regretting the WC but the die is cast so I just have to deal with it.

  50. Francis,

What’s your view on Boswinga? You say we need 2 Chelski defenders, so Carvalho + who? JT is too high, and A Hole will share time with Bridge. Is he likely to play most games?

  53. Any thoughts on replacing Ashley Young with James Milner? With Milner being £2.5m less and now also a Villa winger, seems a tempting option to free up funds. Young should certainly score more points over the season but not sure if it’ll be £2.5m’s worth of a difference?

I’ve been thinking this since the transfer was made. Villa’s problem has been an inbalanced midfield when Young plays out wide, and that was why Villa went with a 4-3-3 formation for much of last season. With Milner, they can play a more traditional 4-4-2, and this raises important FPL questions. Will Milner get as many points as Young? Will Young scored as many points as last year playing in a less advanced role.

I believe Milner is a better long term prospect because of this.

    [Reply]

Well Will Young’s pop career does seem to have gone downhill somewhat…

    [Reply]

Think you’d better leave right now with jokes like that. I just think that although Young will be evergreen in terms of FPL points, down the long and winding road Milner may be better value.

As soon as Ronaldo gets fit, that’ll be enough to light my fire and force the use of my wildcard, and I know I’ll have find the money somewhere.

  54. Some comments are not from me like ‘Gerrald is my man partner!!!’ Enough of some people impersonating me and back to business. Boswinga and Carvalho are good to have in your team. JT is too expensive……Bent for Tottenham should improve a bit after having confidence to score against Chelsea, but expecting Defoe to score more.
Stay with Young for the moment until you see how much playing time Miller gets.

Ive been pretty disappointed with Young so far. But staying with him, surely he must come good at some point? He was doing allright preseason - maybe its cos Barry wasnt playing (i’m assuming he wasnt) and so was hogging the set pieces

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yes I’ll be holding on to Young for a bit, but when I need some money when using my ‘get ronny wildcard’ Milner will be near the top of my list (provided he’s proves me right in the next month.

I woun’t be rushing to bring him in, because even if he does really well gets to 6.5M, thats not alot of money to part with.

Sounds a sensible approach sticking with Young for now, think I’ll do the same until I see how Milner settles in. He got 4 bonus points in his first 2 games for Newcastle so the decision will be easier if that continues.
