Nose Blow For Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas has added his name to the big injury worry list for the weekend after suffering a suspected broken nose in last night’s international for Spain.

The Arsenal man finished the 2-1 win over Belgium but Spanish medical staff were worried about his condition after the game and he will now report back to the Emirates to have the injury assessed. It’s hoped that he’ll be able to play against Everton, although he will be a major concern for Wenger and his remaining fantasy owners.

While we’re on the subject of Fabregas and Arsenal, the Sky article also includes some interesting insight from the midfielder on his role and the Arsenal team in general…

Most notably, he talks about last season’s midfield that included the likes of Rosicky, Hleb and Flamini and appears to lament their loss this term.

“Now none of those players are in the side and I feel like a rare being. We are more defensive-minded and sturdy as a team but we don’t play so much skilful stuff.”

That’s a quote that appears to shed some light on the approach that Fabregas has adopted so far this season, an approach that appears to be influenced by his newfound seniority in the side and he clearly sees this as an issue…

“It’s hard to imagine a midfield where I am the oldest member…. We find it very hard to win matches, as we do not possess enough experience”.

Fabregas may feel, quite rightly, that Song and/or Denilson just don’t provide the kind of defensive support he enjoyed from Flamini last season and if so, that does appear to have influenced his own role. He seems to have curtailed some of his attacking instincts in order to allow the likes of Walcott, Nasri and Denilson, the option to join the attack. It’s all purely speculation of course but my impression of Fabregas this term, is very different to the cavalier, attacking player we saw previously.

That rare headed goal at Sunderland certainly improves his fantasy stats but that can’t hide the fact that he has dropped deeper to set up initial plays far more often than last season, a role which Hleb and Flamini appeared to fulfill on plenty of occasions. You have to wonder whether Fabregas will get anywhere near his impressive points tally of last season if that continues.

  1. Glad I ditched Fabregas a few weeks ago. His role has certainly changed and in my opinion in way that won’t benefit the likes of Fantasy football fans. You’re much better sticking your money with Young or SWP etc… saving yourself a little money to bolster up the rest of your team elsewhere.

  3. Evra at 6.5m or Agger with money left over????

Evra is definitely best in the long term, and that is probably the most important view as you don’t want to be swapping your defence all the time, it is best to rotate and transfer forwards and midfielders based on form. Agger isn’t guarenteed games, so Evra is the better choice.

  4. Hopefully then if Fabregas stays back defensively then Walcott and Denilson can join the attack more regularly - excellent news from my perspective.

  5. I’m not too worried about Fabregas at the moment. Arsenal’s next four games look winnable and presumably he’ll still be taking free-kicks and corners. Put it this way, he’s got me 15 points in 2 games (Telegraph game) so he’s in good form.

  6. I’m not too worried about Fabregas at the moment, apart from the injury of course.

Assuming he’s ok to start, Arsenal’s next four games look winnable and presumably he’ll still be taking free-kicks and corners. Put it this way, he’s got me 15 points in 2 games (Telegraph game) so he’s in good form -

  7. 9.9 million for free-kicks and corners and the odd bonus point here and there? I’m not sure myself. I’d rather free up the 1.5 mill or so with Young and get Lamps in.

  8. I got rid of Fabregas a few weeks ago and don’t see him hitting the heights of last season.

    Any news on Zaki?

  9. I’m planning on benching Zaki this weekend and favouring the 3-5-2 formation. Liverpool will have too much for Wigan and this would be a perfect opportunity for Bruce to rest him. Only problem I have is C.Cole up front also being a doubt!

    Cole will play.

  11. To be honest, I was 80% Cole would play but I never like the word ‘doubt’ EVEN if it’s in the press. I’d prefer my money in Berba and Ronnie even with Torres out. Also the next 5 fixtures leans slightly more favourable to Man U also.

  12. Unless of course money was your primary issue here and you wanted to free up the thick end of 4 mill?

It’s a subtle one Mark, but much better than recent offerings… I’m still waiting for Shorey to be toppled from the top of the tree.

What was the legendary Shorey joke that is always being alluded to? Before my time…

Is it from an old article Mark titled “Will Ferguson Shorey up his defence”(or something like that)? I assume thats the one.

I think a painful knee injury to Agger would be the “perfect storm” of punning…..

    …. he’d be in Agger-knee

That’s good B&B, that’s very nice - all you need to do now is head up to Merseyside with a lead pipe and seek out a specific Danish patella to ensure Mark can pull out that beauty of a pun…

surely the Agger-do pun last week was better than the old Shorey up the defence?
