The Midweek Scout Picks

Hands up - the picks for this gameweek are more than a little shameful in their lack of originality. In my defence, with the Premiership powers of United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal all facing decent fixtures – it’s next to impossible to ignore their players. I have offered a decent array of alternatives though, to hopefully dilute the “bleeding obviousness” of my selection. Read on for the possibly the most predictable picks of the season…

For starters, I’ve gone for Almunia in goal. I can see Harry coming to the Emirates with a 4-5-1 and attempting to shut-up shop. Even if Spurs do lay siege to the Arsenal defence, Almunia has the form to keep them out and earn a few save points in the process.

Bosingwa for Chelsea at Hull keeps his place. I can see Scolari’s men putting on a professional performance and coming home with a 2-0, despite the efforts of Phil Brown’s men. United’s Vidic keeps his place and looks odds on for a home clean sheet against a West Ham without a goal in their last two and with Carlton Cole suspended. Carragher meanwhile, is the best option amongst the Liverpool defence who looks nailed on for a cleanie at home to a Portsmouth side still recovering from Harry’s departure. Laursen completes the back four – it’s two clean sheets in a row for Villa and a Laursen goal is surely just around the corner.

The Midfield is sickeningly obvious – there’s a slight risk of Ronaldo rotation but as always, it takes a brave fantasy manager to turn their back on him. He comes into this one with something to prove having missed chances at Goodison. He should also have increased confidence having just won the FifPro World Player of the year and with Ferguson backing him for 25 goals. It all points to a stronger performance from the United man, against a West Ham side that will surely concede two or three at Old Trafford.

Lampard picks himself again – Deco’s return may limit his forward runs a little so this will need monitoring. Like Ronaldo though, it takes balls of steel to turn away from the Chelsea man for points each game.

Villa’s Ashley Young is off form having gone three games without a goal or assist but, having left him out of the picks for the weekend, I’m bringing him back for this one. A home game with Blackburn should bring Villa more goals and Young’s set pieces will surely bring returns very soon.

The final place goes to Gerrard – who just sneaked in over the cheaper Kuyt. He looked threatening playing just behind Keane at Stamford Bridge and with Torres out, he looks set to play there again on Wednesday against Pompey – he looks odds on for some returns. About time too - he’s been disappointing in fantasy terms thus far.

Up front, Adebayor can’t be ignored in my book and keeps his place in the picks for the third gameweek running. He’ll start at home to Spurs and has a good record against Arsenal’s north London rivals. Spurs will likely be without King at the back after he started two consecutive games. I expect at least a couple of Arsenal goals then, despite Harry’s influence and a likely 4-5-1.

I had to take at least one gamble, so I’ve gone for Zaki as his partner. Hardly a massive risk I know, but Fulham are normally tight at the Cottage. Wigan and the Egyptian have scored the majority of their goals away from home though. And Bruce will want a reaction from the players after the bitterly disappointing 4-0 drubbing at home to Villa. Valencia is back from suspension to provide bullets – Zaki will hopefully fire one or two.

Let’s get on to the alternatives then. In goal and at the back you could do worse than look to the Bolton vs Everton game for a clean sheet. Megson’s side are always good for a home shut-out, while Moyes has obviously spent some time attempting to tighten his defence after they’ve struggled to this point. Could easily be a 0-0 this one with Boltons Cahill and Everton’s Hibbert on his likely return from injury, offering value; Lescott the goal threat if you fancy laying down some hefty cash.

The same goes for the Newcastle vs West Brom game. The Baggies have just one away goal all season so bizarrely, there could be some value in Given and Newcastle’s backline. Taylor, with his threat from set plays, could be a good option. Sunderland at Stoke are also an outside chance, although they have struggled from set plays so could get found out in that department. If Stoke’s Shawcross starts, then he will be a threat to Keane’s back four.

In midfield I’ve a hunch that Everton’s Cahill could come straight back in and make an impact. He’ll likely play just behind the striker in a 4-5-1 and will be a threat from Arteta’s set plays. I also like Pienaar if money is tight – he’s looked very sharp on his return. Bolton away might be the wrong fixture to opt in on though.

Bentley will have a point to prove for a partly rejuvenated Spurs against his former club, while Modric will play just behind a lone striker at the Emirates. There’s also Richardson for Sunderland at Stoke – he’s looking sharp and deadly from free kicks, and with Jones and Cisse up front together at some point tomorrow night, Keane’s men should win a few.

Indeed, Jones and Cisse provide very decent mid-price value up front, although Keane has indicated that he is unlikely to start with the big striker. Kevin Davies looks a good prospect if you fancy goals against Everton. Likewise Fuller against Sunderland. For a real gamble you could look at Ameobi for Newcastle tonight or Sturridge for Man City, who could get a start after his two assists against Stoke, with Jo still feeling the effects of tonsillitis and Evans doubtful with a knee injury.

By the way, even though I expect a good number of goals for United at Old Trafford, I’ve ignored their strike force. Too unpredictable for me, with Tevez surely due to get some action for either Rooney or even Berbatov. Those who do start the game, will surely profit however.

If you’re a Guardian game manager, then you can expect decent defensive stats from Carson and his West Brom defence at Newcastle tonight. Likewise, the Sunderland defence will be defending plenty of high balls at Stoke. Denilson could make a return to the Arsenal midfield as a defensive midfielder option – but his starting role if far from guaranteed from this point on.

As for FPL captain – tough one again. My view is that if you have Ronaldo and you’re certain enough that he’ll start, then you have to captain him. He’ll have a point to prove off the back of his award this week and he’s up against a West Ham side who are likely to turn up with Faubert on the right of their leaky defence, off the back of his own goal against Arsenal. The last thing he needs is Ronaldo running at him but that’s the way it could turn out. If Ron starts, I see a goal and an assist coming his way.

Lampard is, as always the fall back. I do worry about Deco’s influence however – not only at set plays but also in all-round play. Lampard already took up wider positions coming from deep against Liverpool, with Deco operating more central on the edge of the box. Chelsea won’t have it easy at Hull either. He’s a good “Plan B”, as always, but for me, Gerrard is a slightly stronger option this week.

The Liverpool skipper could well be pitched behind the lone striker and looked threatening at Chelsea. Portsmouth conceded goals on their travels and Liverpool are confident. Could be a 3-0 with some Gerrard profit. There’s also Adebayor of course and for a real gamble – it strikes me that Ashley Young is overdue points, while Laursen has also been waiting for a goal rather too long. I’d never normally gamble on defenders but United’s backline appears to offer the safest clean sheet you can find in any recent gameweek.

That’s about it then. Here’s hoping there no last minute team news today or tomorrow to put a large spanner-like object in all that. I’ll try a squeeze out a pre-match preamble later this evening.

  3. Hi Mark, thanks for the picks.
I have had Fabgregas in my team since the beginning and I have becoming a little impatient with his lack of decent return of points. What do you think about his potential returns in coming gameweeks?

  5. Any Man United fans care to venture an opinion on whether Ronaldo plays?
I’m fairly sure I’m going to captain him, unless someone can give me a good reason not to.

    Akers etc, any ideas?

The common view, which I also hold is that Ron will definately play.

We are too many points behind to rest key players and he himself needs to get some goals under his belt.

SAF is a canny old fella. I am pretty sure he has understood Ronaldo’s personality / ego and realises that Ron needs to be at his best (not to metion the star of the show) for him to be happy, so he will give him every opportunity to get over his ‘bad patch’ and turn in a few blinders.

Some of the comments last week about Fergie ‘instructing’ Ronaldo to be less greedy and pass to Berbs / Roonie are far fetched and unfounded. SAF wants the Ronny scoring frenzy back - Course ‘e bloody does!!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

He’s my captain. I think there would be a risk of rotation if United were top of the league, but SAF is not Faffer Benitez. Last season there were a few occasions where the odd player got rested, but Ronaldo was ever-present.

Not sure on the line-up though, a think there may be one or two changes, with the right-back position seemingly in rotation and I fancy Giggs to make way for Carrick, as Fletcher is playing very well. Tevez will start aswell I reckon (if I had Rooney or Berba I’d look elsewhere for a captain).

    [Reply]

I’m pretty sure he’ll play. Even if he doesn’t start he looks good for a goal from the bench. Fergie needs him to get minutes though so he gets back to top form. He’s my captain this week no doubt.

  6. Can I get a consensus on the best affordable replacement for C Cole? Would you go for:

    a) Miller at WBA
    b) Zamora or
    c) Ameobi

They may only sit on the bench, but I want to be covered, just in case…

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Tough call, but Zamora must be due a goal surely? And with Wigan in dubious form this must seem increasingly likely?

Also Mark, great write up as always. The Deco/Lampard conundrum is certainly getting the better of me. Lampard just doesn’t look as comfortable with Deco in the mix. Deco keeps turning up where I expect Lamps to!!

You might want to consider Sturridge of Man City…
He is likely to start after Jo and Evans injured.
He is 4.9 in FPL i believe, and could offer some good points this gw.

    [Reply]

yeah iv counted out miller, only one assist so far itsn’t enough- isn’t he playing right-mid rather than up front anyway?

As much as I think Ameobi is rubbish he looks like a decent punt at the mo.

Yep, for the money I’d go Ameobi

    [Reply]

  7. Mark, thanks for all the work this week… i cant bring myself to make my changes until reading your picks.

anyway i have C.Cole who has to go this gw as i hate my players not playing!.

i really want to gamble on Ameobi but am fearful that he will lose his place after this gw when owen is (probably) back. However whilst mulling over this im thinking Kinnear favors a bigger forward and as such is more likely to drop Martins (who for me hasnt been performing)?

Also he could go back to the front 3 used by Keegan, again Amerobi should keep his place for a bit. Am i just making excuses to bring him in, or do you agree?

The safe option is Zamora because he will play for sure, but isnt performing. Still if Ameobi will only play another game, Zam would be preferable.

  13. **IMPORTANT** Mark, anyway of blocking people from the site? I have been reading from a far over the whole season (after speaking a lot preseason) and think the website is great and your hard work most appreciated but people like Juzzie/Jezzie is/are making it tedious and giving a big middle finger to your site. Just a thought.

I’m gonna punt on Ronaldo for captain, only way I can justify him in my team at £14m is if I see him as two Ronaldo’s for £7m each by making him Captain. For me this GMW Marney out (banking cheaky £profit), Cahill in. After Spurs v Liverpool think Modric looks cracking value for an upgrade with Ireland making way.

cahill for swp was my transfer…… reckon he’ll do the business for the next few weeks.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

That’s not really necessary; Mark’s busy with his articles, and has his own life to live, I suppose it would be quite impossible to be juggling administration duties as well.

If you really want to cut to the chase, just read Mark’s articles, maybe some of Fran’s links when they show in the comments sidebar (I must admit, Fran’s links to external sites are at least 50% of the time useful) and be done with it.

Ignore all the comments, which are more for lolcakes (see: Juzzie/Jezzie/Truth/Tomsk) and scrubs (see: WHICH TRANSFER SHOULD I MAKE ANY HELP APPRECIATED THX GUYS). Unless you have the time to mess around with them, like I do.

Thanks Croublade - I always try to give another perspective somewhat different than Mark. But I agree with him that Lamps is essential, however I keep on thinking with Deco back again this maybe less so? Robinho certainly likes scoring goals and is clearly a threat to Zaki’s claim to be golden boots this seaon. Again, thanks for your support and here’s another link for you - Do you think someone is being racist here? Fergie or the Fifa guys?

    [Reply]

I’d steer clear of Etherington, unless you plan on having him for short-term until Cole’s ban is over.

For around that price I like the look of:
    Pienaar
    Duff
    Gutierez
    Ireland

    [Reply]

  19. Does anyone agree with me that Hart of Man City offers some great value at 5m? Short term he has just notched a clean sheet and has good fixtures. But he could also be great long-term value….

My thinking is that by January, it is likely that Hughes will bring a few big name signings, possibly strengthening his defence.

Now unless Hughes goes and signs Buffon, then Hart should be a great value pick as a goalie of one of the ‘Big Five’ teams. He has just signed a new contract I think. I’m tempted, although also toying with Garrido as another budget City option in defence.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

i do agree, but i have Reina. My reason for this initially was to ensure i have one from Chelsea, utd and liverpool at the back, and at the start of the season he was the only liv player i could see playing regular.

now it seems Agger will be in the team for a good while i agree that its better value to have Hart in goal and Agger, Bosingwa, Evra (for example) across the back, than any other combination. its pretty pointless having a big-4 goalkeeper for the price considering they make few saves. Hart has shown that even if City conceed he can still get decent points from saves.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

i meant to add that my preference for having Agger over Reina is that he offers potential for BPs and the odd assist/goal whereas Reina does not.

Same goes for Evra/VDS or Cech/Bosingwa

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

My thinking exactly - My strategy was to put more emphasis on high value attacking players (mid & att) ealry in the season while defenses are weak, and then try to build up to having that holy trinity (MANU,LIV,CHE) in defence after the teams had settled.

I started off with only Bosingwa and now I have Agger. The next step in my master plan was to upgrade Friedel to VDS, but now I am having second thoughts based on the logic you just laid out.

Problem is I it will take me a while to manoevre enough funds to get in the likes of Evra, so would have to suspend the trinity for now. I am also tempted with Carvalho, who also looks great value ATM…..

    Decisions decisions!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Carv is protected til tomorrow, his NTI is looking pretty negative. If he drops to 6.4, it’ll tempt me to swap Bos for him.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

well said. saves count a lot at the end of the day. getting a big 4 goalie is a mistake, their wingers inevitably offer much better value (evra, bosingwa)

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    hart all the way

    [Reply]

  20. I would stick with tigger in midfield, and move elmo out right while pushing bambi back into central defence alongside speedie gonzlaez! Jesus Dan Boozle do you have a brain, can you make your own uninformed guessess!!!!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    Mark, ban him too!!

    [Reply]

  21. Not a chance, Man City leak goals like a bucket with a hole. Garrido and Kompany are the only players in their backline/goal that should be conssidered, at the moment, as they offer points besides from clean sheets.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

bear in min city have 4 clean sheets (only one less than chelsea/liv), so they will keep clean sheets. their inconsistancy will help the goalkeeper as he has the opertunity to make saves in games where city are not tight.

you could argue a big-4 team, ie. chelsea, will get more clean sheets, but in the games they do conceed it will normally only be the odd goal. therefore Cech loses the clean sheet bonus but has little further action and gets no, or few, points from saves

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I’ve just sold Hart for VDS. He hasn’t actually made that many saves in most of his matches, and when City concede, they tend to let in a couple, which drags down his scoring badly.

in midfield so far i have geovanni, a. young, arteta, and ireland
    thanks please help andy

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I fear for Geovanni’s fixtures near time and Arsenal’s (Fabregas don’t look good in next couple of game weeks), also Ireland may have given us his best already. I like Cahill, although as you have Arteta already, consider Modric after the Liverpool match. I notice no Ronaldo or Lampard, I would suggest upgrading and plugging one of these holes. I suspect your strikeforce must be expensive, consider trading down on a striker to a mid priced, Zaki/Defoe/Agbon/Carew and using the money for a lamps or Ron.

    Robinho instead of Zaki?

Mark tries to put some different/ budget options on the bench, which is why you see Sturridge there instead of Robinho. Still Robinho is looking good isn’t he, im tempted!

    [Reply]

That’s right..I try to use the bench for budget options…If I’d have gone Lescott, Fabregas, Robinho with that eleven I’d feel ashamed. It’s bad enough as it is :-)

  38. Thinking of getting rid of fabregas and c.cole for Kuyt and Zaki,

I win 100 if i win October in my league and i’m 10 points behind the lead - is it worth the 4 point hit, after my terrible 4 point hit to swap Agbon for Carew on the W/E i’m nervous!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

If you get rid of Zaki you will lose a lot and pay more to get him back when he scores a hat-trick tomorrow!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I don’t have him currently, i’m looking at bringing him in.

i did have him but got rid when i used my wc and brought in Ronaldo :( sold him for a lot less than he is worth now!

the question is will he get 4 or more points more than fabregas?

and also - will kuyt defo play?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Er, he’s talking of buying Zaki…

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I’ve never been a fan of the 4 point hit. 8 times out of 10 you are worse off for doing it. Keep faith with Fabregas until Arsenal’s fixtures become tricky. I would get rid of Cole though.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

yeah but with out losing fab - i can’t get anyone decent in for Cole

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

If Cole is your “third” striker, bring in Miller.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

why Miller, hasn’t done much (in terms of points) so far. Has he been playing well?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

As a third striker he is ideal. 4.9mil and great to throw in when West Brom have a favourable home fixture. You can then bulk up your defence and midfield accordingly. I have never been one to blood a front line of 3 expensive strikers. The return just isn’t there for me. Perhaps early in the season maybe, but over the course of the year, the facts prove that defence and midfield win you the title.

An unbiased approval for Fabregas from Fabtastic!

I’d fancy Kuyt over Fab for this GW, but wouldn’t say it’s worth a 4 point hit.

It’s dark days when people fancy Kuyt over Fabregas.

What has become of the game we all used to know and love?

    Thanks for the comments guys!

Kuyt has actually started scoring and plays almost a forwards role (esp with Torres out)

Fab just plays too deep this season to justify his price tag - and dont forget the four point hit will also get me Zaki!

cole is my second striker(!) - i have gone for all out midfield (fab lamps ronny arteta ireland)(!!)

That’s the way things are going, Old Gregg. Next thing you know they’ll be singing the praises of Heskey and putting three lions on his chest again.

Haha, you’ll be surprised to know I am not an Arseanl supporter! I just like the play on word of Fantastic. Besides, there seems to be something about “F” names!

    Getting back to my point:

Say you bring in Kuyt and Zaki. You start off with -4 as opposed to Fabregas and someone else (lets take Miller for example) starting off with 0.

Lets say Zaki scores and Kuyt gets an assist plus a clean sheet. Quite generous if you ask me because Kuyt is not guarenteed a start against Pompey and I can’t see Zaki scoring more than 1 at the Cottage. That’s a combined total of Zaki (6) and Kuyt (6). Let’s throw in 2 bonus points for good measure for an aggregate total of 10.

Let’s take a more modest and realistic view on Fabregas and Miller. Lets say Fabregas gets his customery assist and couple of bonus points. Lets say Miller draws a blank at Newcastle tonight. That’s an aggregate of Fabregas (8) and Miller (2). Again, a total of 10.

Now yes you can argue that they come out equal, but the first example was a case of “at best” while the second example was a much more “modest” one.

But the beauty of fantasy is the risk involved in everything you choose Goodluck Arun with whatever you choose to do!

I see where you’re coming from, I’m not too sure about all of the figures. Kuyt has started every game so far, and as has been mentioned, should be playing out of position up front. Whereas Fab only has a goal and an assist to his name, Kuyt has three goals and an assist.

All of his goals came when Kuyt was part of a two man attack, which I fancy them to do against Portsmouth.

But I’m with you that four point hits are risky, you’ve got to be confident. I’ve done one this week that I now probably wish I hadn’t, but it’s only the second of the season. Easy to get excited and click confirm…

Yes, ofcourse those figures could be very wrong, just a thought process one must do when trying to justify a double transfer. I know what you mean about the transfer button! That confirm button is so tempting!

It’s been made very clear before NOT to post your on website links on Mark’s wonderful website. Use your own marketing and not someone else’s. I don’t mean to come across rude, but we need to appreciate Mark’s hard work.

  40. Who would you start; delap, scharner, Wheater or Paintsil?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

def not scharner. gotta go with home advantage if in doubt. nice thing about delap is that you get a min of 2 points and possibly an assist. i dont see fulham middlesbrough or wigan keeping it clean to be honest

  41. Richardson vs Ireland? long term

    [Reply]

Probably Ireland, as long as he continues to play most weeks and doesn’t get dropped for Man City’s current injured players. Man City will no doubt perform better than Sunderland so is likely to score more points IMO.
