The Weekend Team News

The initial weekend team news is in and can be found in the usual corner of the site here. It’s been a hectic week with the midweek fixtures, so apologies for the delay in giving this its usual Thursday update.

I’ll be updating this up right through until tomorrow morning and the FPL deadline. I’ll post again if there any major news leaking from the mouths of the Premiership bosses later today.

  1. Rooney, Berbatov and Ronaldo should be playing!

    ’should’?
i think the line-up will change from time to time. Tevez isn’t 1st choice but Ferguson will rest players if he thinks they look jaded or considers the next match as being more important. I’m not sure that in the long term any United attacking player, other than Ronaldo, is worth keeping in your side.

i think rooney should play tho… will he?????
just want one haul from the guy before disposing, otherwise only 1,1

Thanks Soop…tallies up with my current team news on the situation. I don’t think he’ll start with Torres personally but then I’ve no idea on his level of fitness of course.

    Mark
You mentioned Alonso previously, do you think he’s worth a punt medium term? Also any thoughts on Jenas (in that bracket), he’s Totenham’s best points scorer and presumably this could improve as the team improves and he’s cheaper than Modric or Bentley, plus a lot cheaper.
    Cheers
    PS
Keep up the good work, it helps give my FPL OCD some focus.

I got Alonso in, Liverpool have great fixtures coming up and I needed rid of Etherington. He isn’t the most proliphic points scorer but I’m sure he can do the job for my team over the spell of kind fixtures. Alonso due a price rise tonight mind so snap him up today if you are going to at all.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yep, I’m considering Alonso. He seems to have cemented his place with Mascherano the one dropping out and likely to be rested for CL according to Rafa’s current patterns. Liverpool’s fixtures are so strong over the next 4-5 weeks, Alonso appears to offer great value at 6.0 in the FPL. I can see him chipping in a couple of goals and assists, in addition to 3-5 bonus points and extra points for clean sheets. A great altnernative if you don’t fancy Ireland and City’s form and fixtures.

Jenas - also a good option. Seems to have more freedom in Redknapp’s 4-5-1. A streaky player too - Wednesday’s goal could see him pick up some regular points over the next 3-4. This might not be the week to get him with the Liverpool defence in town but after that he looks another good alternative.

    [Reply]

    Thanks for that
It could be a question of
Howard Jenas Delap vs Cech Alonso Geovanni

    Can’t quite decide?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

2nd option, no contest I think.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

One consideration with Alonso however is the return of Torres. Currently, with Gerrard pushed up in support of a lone striker, Alonso is sure of a start and can edge forward a little more. If Rafa goes with Keane and Torres with Kuyt on the right and Riera on the left, Alonso’s place could be threatened if his form drops.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

i can’t see it’s good value at any cost when you consider Rafatation. Not worth the hassle.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yeah, as I’ve mentioned above. Torres’ return could open Alonso owners up to some nervous times each gameweek.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

But so far he has only missed 50mins of football all season.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

You don’t think that Maradona coming to watch the match will force Rafa’s hand to play Javier Mascherano?

I know it shouldn’t - but Rafa doesn’t always go by common sense in his rotation policy!!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Amazing really as he was one foot out the door after last season.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Liverpool can win games without Torres like against Man Utd and Chelsea. Sometimes a team plays better if a star player is missing otherwise they would be relying on that one person to score than making an effort themselves.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yeah, but I’ve made concessions (such as loosing Ronaldo for now) so that I can swap out the big 11-12 mil strikers for favorable fixtures. With one free transfer, it’s like having Rooney, Adebayor and Torres on my team, but one of them on the bench.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

That really is an expensive forward line you have! But surely you will need Ronaldo after the Arsenal game?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Stoke looks like a good one, sure, but then Villa and Man city. Not the best line-up. they’ll win, but not by the huge margin they will at Stoke.

And also, the reason I dislike Man U players is that they’re all so good, they tend to share the points. Zaki is a points magnet because he’s by far the best player at Wigan.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yeah but Utd get far more points to share. Plenty to go around.

    [Reply]

  3. is there any update on Michael Owen?
Is he fit for the Villa game?

  4. Are there any Pompey fans on here? I need to know what will happen when kranchar (wrong spelling) starts to reclaim his first team place where will he play? What will happen to traore?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

could play left back, could be on the bench. He may retain his place with the Croat playing more centrally. Who knows? Until Traore loses his starting place i’m not bothered.

  6. Almunia hasnt had too many cleans of late, VDS sat out last week randomly, does this mean that those of us who want to pay up for cleans have to just get Cech?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

has to be cech with carrager or reina with terry but with van der sar he is getting on a bit and will miss a 2-3 more games this season

    [Reply]

  7. Alonso could be a cunning purchase indeed at only 6m. Might take a 4 point hit to get him in before his price rise tonight!

    [Reply]

  8. Fancy bringing in Ronaldo this week for Fabregas, because I think Fabregas plays too deep for a midfielder that costs 9.9m!!

However if i do this i sacrifice my attacking lineup, so Robinho will have to go. Ameobi or Ricardo Fuller to replace him?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Windass, they are all crap down there so you might as well go for the cheapest and make him the perrenial 15th man

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Fuller is okay and is more likely to start games. Ameobi will be out as soon as Owen and Viduka are back

    [Reply]

i can see him coming on for troare after 58 mins this weekend to get us back for the two cheeky clean sheets

    [Reply]

  10. Ok, sorry for the query, I have a difficult decision to make and maybe you can help! Current line up is as follows:

    Reina
Bosingwa, Traore, L Young, Clicy (Baird)
    Lampard, Ronaldo, Ireland, Cahill (Marney)
    Defoe, Zaki, C Cole

    I can transfer as follows:
    Clichy -> McShane
    Cahill -> Delap
    C Cole -> Adebayor

It’s gonna be a hit points wise though I’m worried that the longer I leave it the more chance of me missing the boat price wise (as then sums work perfectly at the mo). I’m 4th in my league at the mo and Adebayor would differentiate me from the people above -worth it?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    dont do it

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

do it. just to confuse things.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Not worth it IMO, you’re downgrading 2 players to upgrade one-very rarely worth doing.

    Clichy to Agger (+0.6)
    Cahill to Modric (+0.8)
    Cole to A. Johnson/Bent (-1.4)

    would be better IMO.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yeh not a good idea. Take points hits ONLY in dire emergencies. Almost always not worth it.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

clichy swap with distan(nice games coming up) 1.2+
cahill swap with richarson or kranjar (see fitness)1.6+
c.cole swap with crouch good games and adams loves him

  11. I’ve done a U-Turn and decided to keep Fabregas in,
    here’s why,
if you look back at his last two seasons, he scored 7 last year with 20 assists, 43 bonus points.
year before he only got 2 goals and 14 assists, but got 53 bonus points.
purely based on bones points, he’s got 9 from 8 already, so is on course to get 40+ already

    [Reply]

  12. Ricardo Fuller or Ameobi? Given Newcastles fixtures are “slightly” better than Stokes. Any thoughts peeps?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    Jim,

I bought Amoebi in before Tuesday’s game from a shortlist of Zamora, Fuller and Ameobi. Was worried about the Arsenal game with Fuller whilst Newcastle have reasonable fixtures which they won’t necessary all win but they should score in.

    [Reply]

  13. Fabregas did look good last season, but he’s moved to the back of the midfield this season…

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

true, but i still think he’ll keep getting the bonus pionts, and picking up the assists.

he did miss 2 games at the beggining of the season, so he’s a two games behind the rest.

i’m keeping faith with him, as i think he’ll start getting 4-5 points everygame.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Jimi what land do you live in?

Fab has been poor in relation to his price tag. Foolish by son.
    Jim - good knowledge.

  14. *sigh* Wish I’d known of anonso sooner. I swapped Denilson for Fletcher just to stop him from leaching my money. That’s another 4pt hit.

    [Reply]

  17. hi jimi my 2 cents i wont base my decision on keeping fab on how many bonus points but rather on whether he will focus more on attacking duties from now. Being an arsenal fan, the draw against spurs definitely had wenger and all arsenal fans fuming and i’m sure he would be going all out to win and not drop any more points. That could mean a dm or mayb allowing fab more room to attack which worked so successfully last year. This is all speculation of course but if he is not attacking as much as last season, i see no reason in keeping him just for the bonus as at 9.9 i dont really think it’s worth it.

any sidenote is wenger would probably field his best attack this week including rvp and ade

I predict good gameweek for Wheater, Terry, Ronaldo, Rooney, Arteta, Gerrard, Fabregas, Defoe and Zaki.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Looks more like now the only way Hull could win is to score early and then put all 11 men in defense. Ronaldo’s dream/nightmare tomorrow?

    [Reply]

  28. Who do ye think is the best option in midfield for about 6m: Geovanni, Delap, Alonso or Richardson? All replies appreciated! Help

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Piennar, Geovanni and Delap, in that order.

Though I have Delap, and he’s good for home games.

    [Reply]

  29. Delap vs Arsenal
    or
    Miller vs Blackburn?

Arsenal look leaky at the back, and with Stoke at home with their narrow pitch, Delap might get another assist. Miller scored mid-week, and though I haven’t watch much of West Brom, he’s getting sharper lately, more so than Bednar.

    Who should I go with?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I have same problem - going for Delap at the moment because Arsenal have trouble in defence, but if someone wants to persuade me that Miller might bang a few in, then I’m all ears!

    or

hart, pienaar and deco (plus 0.8)

please can i have some advice?!

    [Reply]

  33. Personaly I’d go with the first option, Cech is a reliable keeper you can forget about, Irland hasn’t been through the best form as of late but for his price is almost unbeatable (especially if like myself you had him before his meteoric price increase).

Arteta might be worth swapping though Everton have a pretty good run of games coming up.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

cheers badger, i would like deco in the side if he picks up form again and have come to the conclusion it would be at the expense of arteta but also want an everton presence so piennar seems perfect. i would liek to get rid of ireland and hart at some point. cech seems the only big name keeper worth it at the moment as vds might get rested, almunia is awful and the guy 4 points behind me in private league has reina! might give ireland and arteta one more week, bring in cech today then consider my options next week if deco hits form!

  34. This as nothing to do with this topic but thought id just get something off my chest. As a casual observer (this is my first post)i’d just like to say its a great website but whats with all this ‘Fran bashing’!

I know most of it is just friendly banter, but some of it is a little OTT at times. I like his(her?) fran’isms’. Facts are boring. Whats wrong with a bit of opinion and conjecture? Its better than the usual ‘’shall i swap player x for player y” nonsense.

  38. will tevez play now that maradonas coming to watch?

    [Reply]

  39. Mark, I’m a little curious as to why you have changed your predicted Arsenal line-up to include RVP instead of Bendtner. I’m on the verge of getting rid of RVP for Anelka for 2 weeks. However, with Drogba on the bench I think I’ll look elsewhere.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I’m just umming and rrring on RVP. Not yet made my final decision - looking at Arsenal’s fixtures, it might make more sense to rest RVP for CL in midweek in order to have him fresh for United next weekend. If that’s the case, I’m leaning towards him playing tomorrow at the moment. Tough to read tho - Wenger’s given us a little bit of nightmare with this forward line rotation policy.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I wondered if Wenger would adopt similar tactics to those used at Bolton and go with Bendtner and Adebayor, as RVP would get knocked to bits by Abdoulaye Faye and Olofinjana.
