Some Vague News On Carew

Martin O’Neill has offered us a microscopic insight into John Carew’s hip injury this morning. Talking to Aston Villa TV (we’re all avid viewers), The Villa boss appears to be pretty optimistic on the striker being available for the trip to Arsenal this weekend, along with Luke Young who also sat out the weekend defeat…

“I thought John might be fine for Middlesbrough but he was unable to make it so we’ll see how things progress for the pair of them during the rest of the week,” remarks the Villa boss.

Carew apparently failed a fitness test before the Boro game and must therefore have a good chance of making a welcome return for the Emirates trip. Meanwhile Luke Young’s thigh injury “doesn’t look to be too bad” according to O’Neill. The latest prognosis on Villa’s defence as whole? It still looks bloody terrible. My words, not his.

  2. well be sure that Villa will play very tight against Arsenal.. Remember the 0-0 against Liverpool? In this case, I’m not sure that O’Neil will play with 2 forwards.. He can be tempted to rest Carew one more week and playing 4-5-1 with some more defensive tactics

How about Torres in for C Cole?

    [Reply]

    Not afforable C Cole =5.5 plus 5.7 = 11.2
    Torres is 11.9

Apologies, maths is normally a strong suit of mine!

Anelka/Berbatov/Bent for C Cole plus ditch Traore for a defender who appears to be in favour with their newly appointed manager.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Definitely Cole out for Robinho or Berbatov and Dawson out for Silvestre

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Or how about dawson out for someone who isn’t a second string arsenal defender?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Forget the days Hull City was having clean sheets, all over now.. I can agree that Dawson will have 1 or 2 assists on corners but Silvestre can also score on corners and it’s 6 points for a goal for a defender!!
Silvestre - second string arsenal defender???? LOL.. Since making his debut against Everton, he has played all Arsenal matches pushing Touré on the bench even when the latter was not injured!!
He also has 1 goal, 2 assists and 2 clean sheets in those 7 matches!!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Arsenal fixtures: Villa, Man City, Chelsea, all dangerous teams. We’ve kept about 3 clean sheets all season, how much chance do you think Arsenal have of not conceding against those teams?!! You must be kidding.

Silvestre can score from corners…to quote you..; “LOL”!!!! So what?! So can loads of other players. One assist and one goal is not enough to make up for the lack of clean sheets he’s going to offer up.

He should be looking at chelsea and Liverpool defenders for the next few games.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    For 5.5??? Phewwwww… Robinho 9.5 minus Cole 5.5 = 4.0.. 1.7 left to upgrade Dawson = 4.0 + 1.7 = 5.7!!
Chelsea and Liverpool defenders at 5.7??? Yep, may be Belleti, Bridge, Ivanovic, Mancienne or Hyppia, Skrtel(???), Insua!!!!!

As some of the others have already pointed out, the two obvious weaknesses are Traore and C.Cole both of which you should ship out and burn those millions on strengthening those positions. Have you considered replacing him with Glen Johnson that might be a worthwhile trade off, and you could afford either Berbatov or Anelka.

take one of your sub defenders out for evra mate good luck

  4. I’ve finally run out of patience. I’m ready to ditch both Laursen and Ashley Young. I’ve given both guys every chance to perform and if I’m honest, both have provided reasonable returns, but they are not good value for money.

Laursen is a 6M+ defender who is in a team that keeps very few clean sheets, admittedly he is a goal threat, but so far nowhere near as many goals as last year.

Young, who I’m sure will rack up decent points over the course of a full season, but at present he’s not scoring and assisting anything like last year, and at 8.5M there are other options available to me.

With Villa’s next 2 fixtures against Arsenal and Man Utd, now seems the time to transfer these guys out of my squad.

    [Reply]

i agree with you mate iv had the same thoughts, iv got both a young and swp both rip off for their returns so a young out this week, either kuyt, bentley, krancjar in but not sure which to go for?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I ditched both Laursen and Young this week.

    [Reply]

  5. luckily young hasnt really gone up in price so far so you wouldnt be losing much in ditching him, then picking him up later when his form increases …and the price will probably be lower anyway, win-win i reckon

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yeah, I agree with you - time to try something a little different, and maybe reconsider Young later on.

  6. C Cole -> Berbatov
    Marney -> Modric
    Delap -> Teixeria
    Traore -> Belhadj (bench Dawson!)

The only striker I don’t want is Berbatov as others have him in my league.

    Any other ideas?

    [Reply]

I like Andy’s plan. So Robinho.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    Except Hamann for Teixeria

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I think Teixeria will get more minutes on the pitch than Hamann. Neither will be big scorers, but if you are looking for a bench warmer you want the one that is most likely to play. That’s Teixeria IMO.

Ahh I take it he’s been injured then. I’m still a newbie here so I didn’t know that. Thanks for the advice Steve.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

yes mate, he played his first game of the season this weekend. By all accounts he was a key player last year and i don’t think the baggies made too many summer signings so he should get back in to the team once fit.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Sounds like pretty good advice from AndyC; Marney, Traore (won’t play) and C Cole are the weak links in that team. I wouldn’t worrry too much about having the same striker as your rivels at this early stage in the season. I suppose Robhinio would be the obvious alternative.

    [Reply]

  7. i’m playing with a lone striker so made it Torres. I’m playing this all season so i may aswell make sure its a reliable source of points over the season. I hope……

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Just curious, what is your team? I’m thinking of changing my formation to 5-4-1, or something to that effect. Defenders are just far more consistent than strikers, and cheaper.

    any thoughts?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

If you’d spent £0.5m more and chosen Cech/Reina and Schwarzer/Turnbull like many others then you wouldn’t have that dilemma. You did ask for any thoughts.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

well jaaskelainen has the same points as cech so im not complaining

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I know but what’s your prediction for the whole season ?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

well if u look at last season, the top keeper wasn’t playing for a top 4 team. if jaaskelainen can keep making saves and gets the odd bonus point then i think he will do alright all season and would rather spend that little bit extra elsewhere

    [Reply]

  10. hello guys , i have a feeling as a manutd fan that either rooney or berbs will be dropped for this weekend tfor tevez i dont know how u guys feel about it

    [Reply]

Good call on Cahill, I forgot him. Hangeland is a good shout for home games, not so good away. I’d avoid the last 3 (although i have figgy). Garrido is far from assured his place in the team and Wigan can’t defend for toffee at the mo.

  15. My patience with Villa has all but gone. Young was out last week, Laursen is out this week. I still quite like the look of Agbon however. I feel he still looks threatening infront of goal so keeping a keen eye. Obvious temptation with Liverpool, Portsmouth and to some extent Chelsea as fixtures looking kind. Still unsure about Keane. Defoe let me down for a few too many weeks. I also have a mental block with Anelka. I have a gut feeling he has such a great team behind him that many more goals are on the horizon. However, I’ve never rated him and I’m not sure why? Anyone else feel similarly?

    [Reply]

  16. Is similarly even a word?

    [Reply]

    similarly
adverb 1. in the same way, the same, identically, in a similar fashion, uniformly, homogeneously, undistinguishably
adverb 2. likewise, in the same way, by the same token, correspondingly, in like manner

    [Reply]

  18. Get Anelka in he gets goals & assists and at the end of the day this is what we are playing for.

    [Reply]

  19. On the Anelka debate, I am a chelsea fan and go to 10-15 games a season. I have never rated Anelka (nor Malouda for that matter) but he has been scoring regularly recently. However it is the old addage that anyone could play up front for a team that is playing so well and they will get chances. I just cant help thinking that a more clinical striker (who looked like he wanted to be playing football) would be better.

In summary he will score many goals this season (when drogba doesnt play) but his general play means that he wont get many bonus points (dont understand how he did yesterday and against sunderland.) I would think that berbatov overall will score more points.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Seems as though we are reading from the same page. I have Berba and I would like to think I will stick with him for some time as his class will shine through, MU will soon have a great run and I’m sure he’ll be in the thick of it. Anelka plays more like a vulture and as Ftumch mentioned this usually means regular goals especially with a team such as Chelsea behind you. Problem is I just can’t bring myself to get him in!?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Most people seem to think Anelka is rather shite. Most of his goals have been simple tap-ins or fluky deflections (Bosingwa this week, Alex last week) but I’ve yet to see him make and score a goal for himself. I keep on telling myself that there’s no way he’s going to get as many goals next week, and then he goes and proves me wrong :(.

    [Reply]

  20. Ive lost it with SWP, time to get rid! Any ideas who would be a good, consistent replacement?
Also should i look to get rid of Evra? He is doing nothing recently and Man U are looking shakey at the back. Any recommended alternatives? I have Bosingwa and Reina at the moment.
    Cheers for the advice.

    [Reply]

evra is on my shopping list for after the wigan non-game in mid Dec. i currently have 2 united players so i am planning to beef up my subs a little to cope with the lack of pointage that week.

for the time being i am running with traore/belhadj (soon to be exhanged) given portsmouths nice fixtures and using the money elsewhere

the utd situation is interesting as they will be 2 games behind by mid Dec. from then on i think everyone must be thinking of an Evra/Ron/Berb combo for the remainder of the season. should be a lot of points there and 2 extra games is excellent

    [Reply]

  21. Hello. I’m thinking of swopping Agger in for Ferdinand. Then when Skrtel gets fit I’ll put him in for Agger. This will give me enough cash for Bentley or Nasri.

1/ Do you guys think Skrtel is reasonably secure or will Agger get rotated in a lot. I expect a small amount of rotation will be inevitable.

2/ Do you prefer Bentley or Nasri and why ?

    [Reply]

  22. If you feel like keeping a foot in with Man City then Ireland has to be a consideration. At his current value he’s still a bargain in my opinion. He’s had a slightly bad run of games but again he is always involved and stands out as one of the most consistent players for Man City at present. Alternatives would have to be Bentley, Modric or perhaps Geovanni (Hull)?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Erm was that a reply to me ? If so I have Ireland, Geovanni and Delap already.

    [Reply]

  23. No sorry it was to Ripper. I’d say in reply to your message though I’d go with Bentley. He’s keenly valued and now Tottenham are pulling themselves out of that dark hole he could see a decent amount of points from now on. Nasri on the other hand has had a blinder of a week but only time will tell as to whether he will always be a 1st team choice and if he can prove his worth consistently.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yeah Bentley had a good season last year and you can be almost certain Nasri will be rotated. Arsene has said as much a few weeks ago. And free kicks for Bentley and injuries for Nasri. Yup that’s settled for me I think.

What about the Liverpool defenders ? I’m worried about the rotation.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Some say he’s learnt his lesson about not rotating his central defenders. Others say he’s still the same mad old Rafa. The truth is, HES THE STIG!!!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Trouble is it’s a bit of a gamble for me since I won’t be able to switch up to a £6.5m guy…problems, problems ho hum.

    [Reply]

  24. I have used my W card. Thought id use it now and hope i dont get a bagfull of injurues at the smae time in the future. A combination of suspension tightrope, poor form and being dropped was the reason.

What do you think of these transfers:

    Wheater > Belhadj
    A. Young > Fabregas
    Bullard > Mordric
    Rooney > Berbatov

    [Reply]

  25. All good apart from Fabregas… I think most would agree that he’s just not providing enough returns for his price-tag this season.
    Who else have you got?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Keep Bullard I think. Maybe A Young to Modric!

    [Reply]

  26. Which Bolton defender and why?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Shittu cos his team matches that of the team

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Either cahill (1 goal and 2 assists) or Gardner ( defender in FPL) but playing as left wing last 2 matches and scoring goal

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Gardner for sure, costs 4.3MM and as dadoune said is a speedy left winger now. ACtually started his career there but was switched to left back under Allardyce and is now back at left wing. Could be a “new Traore” though playing for an obviously worse team…

    [Reply]

  27. My team

    Cech (Schwarzer)
    Ferdinand, Evra, Laursen, Belhadj (McShane)
Lampard, Fabregas, Bentley, Modric (De Ridder)
    Berbatov, Zaki, (Miller)

I not to sure about Fabreags but may transfer A. Young back in after their two games with Arseanl and Utd.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

I’d say Carvalho/Alex for Ferdinand ( free up funds ), Arbeloa for Laursen ( shaky defence ), Bent for Zaki ( better team ), Geovanni or Ireland for Modric ( reduce Spurs exposure, free up funds ) and then spend the 1.5m approx on your reserves or else Agbonlahor instead of Zaki/Bent. I also agree that Fab is a dodgy choice.

    [Reply]

  28. Any news or views on Ashley Cole? Will he be ok for Saturday? He was only reported to be out for 7-10 days and it’ll be 14 by this weekend.

    [Reply]

  29. U have 2 Manu defenders?? Why not Alex/Carvalho and Agger/Skrtel?? This will give u the possibility to rotate whenever the Chelsea, Liverpool, Manu have difficult away matches..
Either Bentley or Modric not both!!!
Try to have Ronaldo in for Fabregas by downgrading Bentley/Modric to Geovannie and Berbatov to another striker
    Laursen no use

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    How about:

    Ferdinand > Bosingwa
    Laursen > Agger

I think Bentley and Modric are worth keeping

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Agree with the need for some Chelsea at the back… Boswinga might be a bit out of your price range now though. Alex for Ferdinand would be a good move (although he’s probably only got another 2/3 games left in him)… if you cant be bothered with that, then certainly get Carvalho in once he’s fit again.
Long term though, I think its definitely Fabregas that you need to be looking closely at… that’s a lot of money you’ve got tied up there. With a bit of tinkering you could bring in a very good alternative (eg if you downgraded Fabregas to a budget midfielder, and Bentley to Geovanni, you could have Torres instead of Miller)

    [Reply]

  30. This malarky is full of tough decisions so some help would be good …

    Reina

    Carra Evra Turner Bos

    Geo Ron Lamps Ireland

    Defoe Fuller

    Do I

    a) Leave Evra so I can replace him with Carvalho
    b) Replace Evra with a cheap good defender (Belhadj/Paintsil/Gardner) and use the cash to buy a top 4 striker, thus kiss goodbye to Carvalho.

    Hmmmm

    [Reply]

take out one of the big defenders, you have 4 defensive players from top 4 teams, id take one out and use the money to strengthen up front. Id say drop Carra as you have Reina (you are still covered by the Liverpool cleansheet).
    Hope that helps.

    [Reply]

  31. Agree with AndyC

Anyone think it’s worth taking a 4 point hit this week on Traore for Belhadj if you’ve used your free transfer already. I bought at 4.6 so would risk losing a marginal gain too if I hold too long?

    Thoughts?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    no

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

    You’re right, I was obsessing!

    [Reply]

  32. So u have 4 subs that u will practically not use except maybe Schwarzer and Miller.. I think u should play 3-4-3..
U already have Reina as Liverpool player in ur defence.. If u play both Carra and Reina but Liverpool concede goal u wont get any clean sheet bonus.. I think u should skip carra for a cheap good defender (Belhadj/Paintsil/Gardner)[ur choice already].. Do not sell Evra as then u’ll have players from the 3 best defensive teams(Chelsea, Liverpool and Manu) + Turner and the other cheap defender.. U will have 2.6 in bank from ur defense..
In midfield, no need to change, excellent choice..
U can then upgrade defoe for Adebayor, rooney, Berbatov or Robinho..
When WBA have easy home games u play 3-4-3 with Miller else u play 4-4-2 with either Turner or the other defender

    [Reply]

  34. dadoune I’m actually considering having 3 Liverpool defenders to go with my 2 from Chelsea, I know you say it’s risky but there is a good chance that both will keep clean sheets more often then not in the next few weeks.

A full house of clean sheets sounds a tall order but when it’s from 2 teams it’s really not that difficult to get and with liverpool having 3 gamnes at home it could be very profitable.

United have some tricky away fixtures so thinking of swapping Evra for Agger or Arbeloa.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Should have done it some weeks back marc3.. Chelsea has had 3 matches without conceding and Liverpool 3 out of 4!! Probably too late for a risky trial.. But who still it could work for 1 or 2 GW..
Having said that, ur defence will cost u around 32 and u wont probably get much strike force..
But still it is a good bet.. If ever it works and the likes of Ronaldo, Lampard, Berbatov and adebayor do not score, then u wont be ridiculous..

    Team now is:

    Cech (Schwarzer)
    Bosingwa, Agger, Figueroa(Cahill, Traore)
    Ronaldo, Lampard, Arteta, Geovanni (Delap)
    Bent, Zaki, Defoe.

Any views, worth taking any 4 point hits, I’m thinking not…although looking to keep an eye on Traore, Figs and Arteta.

    [Reply]

I’d swop Arteta for Bentley/Modric and spend the cash on a better defender than Traore ( because it looks like he’s a reserve now ). How much cash do you have though ? And I’m not suggesting that you take a points hit. Do it next week.

  37. Anyone reckon its worth taking a punt on Fabio Da Silva for the Stoke game?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Think you probably mean Rafael Da Silva, yeah? If you’re playing FPL then no he’s not worth it, as he’s classed as a midfielder and so he doesnt get a defender’s clean sheet scores.

Fabio is his twin brother - also at Man Utd - and he hasnt played a game yet! So he’s definitely not worth it ;) But he *is* classed as a defender, just to add to the confusion…

See if he plays midweek in the Carling cup first, along with what sort of team Fergie whacks out. If he doesn’t play then I reckon he could have an outside chance of starting at the weekend. Neville surely can’t keep his place after such a horrific match against Nasri. However, John O’Shea hasn’t had a game for a while…

  38. Guardian players- anyone else rather annoyed with the farce over value changes this week? If you’re going to do one price change a week, make sure you do it on the designated day! I presumed they’d just leave it until this thursday to do it, so have hung about on transferring Young out for Bentley/Modric. They’ve both gone up 0.1 today, and Young’s dropped too. Can’t remember how much he was on before but I’ve a horrible feeling he’s dropped by a whole 0.5….
And bloody turnbull’s gone up 0.2! I’m finding fresh horrors as I type, so I’ll stop now, but this is not good! Time to start doing my sums all over again.

Yup, very annoying and disorganised. Not all bad though. Anyone notice how cheap Nasri is in the Guardian game? Only 5.1, very surprising, even though I’m not certain personally I’d want to get him right now because need to use the transfers elsewhere and satisfied with my midfield at the moment (Ronaldo, Lampard, Arteta).

  39. X-RAY DOG, what’s your team? (If you don’t mind me asking) Just that I noticed above you said you got Torres and only play 1 up top, I’m thinking of changing my team formation to 5-4-1, or something like that anyways and obviously want someone whose gonna be a consistant striker. I just feel that there’s more value and consistancy with the top defenders. Cheers

  40. Guys what your thoughts on zaki? I feel he hasn’t been as productive as late. Maybe its time to transfer out and make a large profit?

Larger profit?? well, if u sell him, who u think u can buy?? If u bought him at 6.0, you will get 6.6 from his transfer.. With 6.6 u can only get Davies, Heskey, King, Roberts, Mido, Cousin!! Phewww, do u still think it’s worth???

you transfer him out and replace with a benchwarmer and invest the moolah in defence and midfield

i wont be getting rid just yet though

    Swop him for Bent

  41. I’m feeling the same, but I got him back when he was 6.0M so if he hits form again dunno if I’d be able to get him back!

  42. Folks,

I’m jumping aboard the ‘get rid of Young/Defoe/Traore’ bandwagon. Young because of the return against price and the Pompey boys due to threat of being benched and pending price drops.

I’m looking for opinions on whether it’s worth the 8 point hit for…

    Traore –> Belhadj
    A. Young –> Delap
    Defoe –> Torres

    Current squad = http://fantasy.premierleague.c.....c?id=42307

Longer term I plan to save up for Droggers once he’s on form (4-5 weeks away yet it seems) in exchange for Torres.

I still think Defoe is a decent choice. Torres is expensive but you could have Adebayor for similar money I think when he’s back. Personally I prefer Berbatov and get a better player than Delap.

In my opinion - no. * points is a lot to toss away.

The Traore/Belhadj situation doesn`t hold any basis yet in my opinion. What if Traore starts this week instead? There may be no value in either Traore or Belhadj and I would wait to see what happens before taking a point hit to trade a cheapo defender for someone that may be no better.

I don`t understand your Defoe panic, if you were concerned, why sit a few drops and wait until he hits a goal to decide he is worth a 4 point hit to get rid? That doesn`t make sense.

In my opinion, Young should be gone because he isn`t productive at the minute, and has 2 hard games coming right up.

I think you may be too late to get much from the Delap bandwagon without point hits, so it might not be worth it. I think if you were to go for him, you would need to distribute the cash a bit rather than go for Torres as you already have a lot of fringe players.

My suggestion is chill out a bit about team value. I don`t think it is worth point hits unless you genuinely want to get rid of a player who is dropping for a player who is rising.

Great advice, I’m gonna chill & see what comes from the cup matches. Can’t see further price drops for these guys before that…cheers!

  43. dadoune strikers are a waste for me, too small a return for their outlay, Bedntner and Zaki will do fine as I’m looking at Ronaldo, Lampard, Giovanni and Cahill as my real strike force.

    [Reply]

  44. Why would you transfer Zaki out to make a bit of profit?

He’s in a Wigan side where he takes penalties and is their main striker, he is a snip and not really doing any harm by being in the team because his price was so low (if you got him for 6m at the start)

Doesn`t matter if he cost 6. He is now costing you 6.6. In my opinion, the bandwagon is about to reverse in a big way and it could very well pay to jump off if someone is firing, like Bent is now. It`s a situation worth monitoring.

That’s a crazy answer! How much is Bent? Zaki is ridiculously underpriced for a striker… His true value would be closer to 8-9 I think!

  45. Hi…can anyone advise me on my Agger/Skrtel decision. I want to know whether one or the other will dominate when they are both fit or whether they will be rotated mercilessly ? Cheers.

Well Agger didn`t play a single minute until the injury. I would personally avoid both.

Skrtel will regain his position and keep in once he’s back.. But that doesn’t look like until near the end of December. So Agger is pretty safe for the time being.

  46. Im looking for some changes and Im not sure which one to make:

    What would you do?

Miller + Berbatov (instead of Defoe and C. Cole)

    or

Bent + Cech (instead of VDS and Zaki)

    current team:

    VDS (Schwarzer)
Arbeloa, Bosingwa, Olsson, Traore A., Agger
    Ronaldo, Bentley, Lampard, Delap, Ireland
    C. Cole, Defoe, Zaki

    0.9 in bank

Neither imo. I like your team, but SAF said VDS will be rotated so I agree he isn`t the man for the job.

Cole is about to return so I don`t see the sense in taking a 4 point hit now, after
