The Pre-Match Preamble
My Saturday morning schedule used to consist of Swap Shop, Football Focus and Saint & Greavsie now they find me tapping out last minute thoughts on fantasy football with Sky Sports News wittering away in the background. It’s all part of growing up.
Have Zaki (used) want to swap for Bent or Buckaroo. Here’s the preamble…
It’s all about the team news this morning - there’s been some late developments.
Firstly some late injury news surfaced last night reported that Petr Cech would miss today’s trip to West Brom with a leg muscle injury. It looks as though it’s a recurrence of a thigh muscle injury that kept him out earlier in the season and it’s apparently ruled him out of the Czech Republic’s World Cup Qualifier with San Marino on Wednesday.
This latest blow could be a costly one for his fantasy owners with Chelsea looking strong for another cleanie at the Hawthorns. It also provides more evidence that Cech carries an injury prone status as a keeper. Cech is expected to be back next weekend but even so, suddenly Mr Reina is looking a lot more tempting than he did 24 hours ago. Meanwhile, there will be a lot of FPL managers relying on Schwarzer, Myhill and Turnbull this gameweek - none of that trio look anywhere near as likely to bring in the expected clean sheet from Cech.
The Independent is also carrying a story on the Torres situation - suggesting that the striker may not be risked for a start at the Reebok. They quote Rafa from yesterday’s press conference, who stated that Torres was “very, very short” of match fitness. Sky Sports news and the Daily Mail are also carrying the same story this morning. I’m not totally convinced, although I’m also not backing Torres to have an easy time against Bolton even if he starts. That’s enough for me to look elsewhere and even leave the Liverpool striker on the bench in my Guardian lineup. This could be good news for Kuyt investors - he looks likely to continue in a central striking role should Torres miss out.
As a sidenote to the game at the Reebok, Sky Sports are also indicating that Carragher could shift to right back, which would mean a start for Hyypia. Stephen Darby is another option at right back but I’m now backing Rafa to go wit experience and have changed my predicted lineup with Carragher at right back and Torres benched.
It seems that Marlon King has kissed and made up with Dean Windass - not an image I wan’t to dwell on this early in the morning. That should clear the way for King to start today agianst City which could wel bring some profit. I liked King going into this gameweek and indeed, the next few weeks. He’d probably have pushed Ameobi for the place on my bench in the picks
There’s still no further news on the Zaki situation. As you many know, there’s a suggestion that the Egyptian has been left behind, along with the injured Heskey, for the trip to St James’ Park today. Zaki is apparently sufferig from flu and has also picked up a bang to the ribs. This web of intrigue gets even deeper when you consider that the reports are also reports that Wigan have recalled Sibierski from his loan at Norwich and that he could go straight into the Wigan side against his former club. This seems very unlikely given that Norwich were set to be without him this weekend because of a knee injury.
This whole Zaki situation looks dodgy to me and at approximately 9.14 am there is no firm evidence to back these claims. Sky Sports aren’t carrying it but then they haven’t reported the Cech situation as yet. My advice then - select Zaki in your FPL lineup and let the auto subs do the business. In other games its a tougher decision but I’ve left him on the bench in the Guardian game which will probably mean he’ll profit.
Meanwhile there’s a very bizarre story on the pages of the Sun this morning, as it was rumoured that Roy Keane had walked out on Sunderland and wasn’t on the team bus for Ewood Park. It looks nonsense but is it really a smoke without fire situation? Maybe jump on that risky Blackburn clean sheet after all.
That’s about it from me this morning - I’m off to work now, so will miss out on the usual match banter. I’ll try to pop in now and then though. Have a good fantasy weekend folks.

morning all,
last minute decisions!
Paintsil (fulham @home) vs Spurs
O’Brien (Bolton @home) vs Liverpool
Newcastle vs Figueroa (Wigan @away)
which 2 are most likely to get clean sheets..?

i’ll be honest as a bolton fan although we usually do well as home v liverpool i dont think we’ll get a clean sheet.. that being said if jussi shows any kind of form like last week then maybe..

Reply by Pedro on November 15 9:36 am:
also mick, newcastle have beaten wigan 1 - 0 in the last three meetings so that going to be a tight affair pal
[Reply]
2nd haha I never get 1st. Come on need a massive week this week ! -4 atm so for once maybe one of my defenders could score, only once (Laursen)has it happened this year.
[Reply]
This zaki situation is beginning to frustrate me but as most of my friends have subbed him out i holding on for one more week.. Mark who do you reckon as a replacement i already have bent??
[Reply]
Saint n Greavsie. Those were the days. I wonder what they would do? Hmmmmmmm
[Reply]
12 goals in the last two meetings at the cottage between fulham and tott, anyone else feeling that a.Johnson may be worth a look?

is alex out for sure then?

Lads… I need some help. Some serious decisons to be made..
Reina (Schwartzer)
Evra Figureoa A Traroe?(Wheater) (Alex)
Ronaldo (C) Lampard Young Cahill Marney
Zaki Bellamy (Miller)
0.0 in the Bank!
Willing to make 2 changes.
Thinking Nasri for A Young???
And maybe rearrange defence with extra 0.9m. Selling either Alex or Wheater
Any help greatly appreciated.

Why keep Alex any longer? Silvestre ( bandwagon to follow ) for Alex is my shout.
[Reply]
Reply by Carlos on November 15 10:13 am:
I was thinking that way until i looked at liverpools next 5 fixtures. a very very nive run…. that swayed my decison to Agger. Still unsure about Arsenal. Last week was a big game which they rose to the ocassion. But they were not roughed up and they were allowed to play football. Think Liverpool will keep a lot more clean sheets tahn Arsenal.
[Reply]
Reply by carpyfish on November 15 10:21 am:
I certainly agree with all that but I didn’t realise you had the funds for Agger ?

nasri better than i thought. swp & a young very out of touch
[Reply]
right i have
reina, schwazer
traore, vidic, hangeland, alex, griffin
ronaldo, lampard, ireland, geovani, arteta
bent, zaki, bednar
i have already stupidly used my transfer and spend 4 points (was done early).
can you see my problem? shall i bite the bullet and spend another 4 points?
please help
[Reply]
Reply by Carlos on November 15 10:07 am:
Just had a similar problem to you (see 3 posts up) and i have just sold Young and Alex for Nasri and Agger…. I already have Reina so I’m banking on a Pool clean sheet. With and Agger goal. And its the early kick off today. Off to a flyer!!!

Reply by kiopuk on November 15 10:10 am:
agger was definetly who i was considering for alex. you reckon it’s worth losing 8 point this week just to get him in?
[Reply]
Reply by Carlos on November 15 10:15 am:
a 4 point hit - yes… 8 points - I’m not so sure.
Like if you do it you need Agger to Score a goal to make it worth while… A cleanie alone and you wont even break even

Reply by Ronaldo Lover on November 15 10:32 am:
I’ve taken an 8 point hit to bring Agger in. The way I look at it is it’s not just Agger I’ve had for those 8 points, I got Bent, Modric And Agger. So If they score 8 points more than Ashley Young, Carew and Figueroa who I got rid of, and I think they will, then I’ve made a very smart move.
[Reply]
Reply by stephen c on November 15 10:14 am:
you’re midfiled is ridiculously strong so you have to take the hit on not having a ridiculoulsy strong attack/defense.
play 3 5 2 and leave out alex and griffin and bednar
if zaki dont play then bednar will be in
or you take the hit and hope your replacement scores 4 more than the guy you subbed

We dont know. If Adams does not give him a run today then i think its defo time to get rid. I’m still not convinced that Pamarot is going to be a permanent fixture in this team yet. Wait and see today I guess. If you have to swap him for Belhaj then so be it. 4 point hit. I hate them!!!
[Reply]
Reply by carpyfish on November 15 10:23 am:
I have that problem too. It’s hard to say what Adams will do.

Looks like Dawson and Almunia are doubts as well

I started off really weel this year, but getting caught up big time now, what do people think - room for improvements?
VDS (Schwazer)
Bosingwa L.Young A.Traore (Dawson) (Griffin)
Ron Lamps Alonso Marney (Mullins)
Berbatov Bendtner Torres
Any thoughts appreciated…..

Reply by carpyfish on November 15 10:27 am:
Shaky at the back. It’s not impossible you’ll be down to Griffin today. Young is reported fit but not certain he’ll play. Traore could be a sub. Dawson subbed last weekend…not sure if fit, though most likely he is.

Dont fancy Ade or C.COle to be honest.I’d look at some of the Spurs attacking options. Modric, Bent, Bently and even Jenas all look like ahving good potential over the nextt few weeks. Also I’d wait to see how productive Kranjar is before Purchase.

Looks like Traore is out of favor, Alonso isn’t garanteed to start. Replace Traore with Agger and Alonso with Kranjcar.

Slightly regretting my decision a few days ago to replace Robinho with Torres. Now thinking I should have stuck with the form player and waited a bit before going for the man coming back from injury. But I was swayed by Liverpool’s tempting fixtures… It might yet work out in the next few weeks. In the meantime, here’s to a Defoe hat-trick today!!

guys have spent my 4pts already this week but team looks like this, so i have the issue of - do i sell cech for reina costing a further 4pts - teams around me at top of my league have reina not cech to further frustrate me
cech (schwarzer)
Bridge, Young, Kompany (Fig) (Griffin)
Lampard, Ronaldo (c), Richardson, Piennar, Ireland
Bent, Zaki, Defoe
Fig coming in to replace Bridge is also a risk as it seems Cole is back but was going to make defence changes next week. Got 0.6 in bank.
Cheers

i agree - your main issue is your defence! kompany is a risk, bridge probably wont play or will come on for last 15mins to replace tired cole, figueroa, young and griffin will leak goals!
i’d go with kompany, bridge and young with figueroa as your 1st defence sub
[Reply]
will traore play for pompey?
[Reply]
I’ve got a similar issue in midfield - play 2 from Richardson, Piennar or Ireland. With the other being 1st sub
Help?
[Reply]
I brought in torres, rafa will play him for at least 50/60 mins or maybe even maybe the last 30 mins. If anyone will score it’ll be him against that bolton defence. Never doubt the Torres.
[Reply]
Do I ditch big Laursen for the 4 point hit? Would be bringing in a Liverpool defender. (Carragher or Aurelio)Laursen due a price drop, and 2 rubbish fixtures, but a bit nicer after that. Would be my first 4 point hit and not sure I’m brave enough.
[Reply]
Reply by brown on November 15 11:04 am:
dont bother - you wont gain enough from it - maybe 1 point as arsenal wont go too crazy over villa in fact it will be tight plus i dont see carragher or aurelio scoring so will only get 6 points max and with carragher potentially playing right back they could even lose a goal
[Reply]
Reply by dan on November 15 11:14 am:
or with carragher playing RB he could surge forward and create opportunities - possibly an assist?
[Reply]
don’t jump on the bandwagon! laursen can score against anybody!
especially arsenals shite-in-the-air defence
young cross will demolish them LAURSEN!
[Reply]
Mmmm. But you have to consider Liv’s fixtures are tasty over the next few, it’s not a 1 gameweek move. I’m now considering Traore to Carragher, which would allow me to keep Laursen for when his games get better. What d y’all think?
Present team:
Schwarzer (Turnbull)
Bosingwa Agger Laursen Traore Figueroa
Ronaldo Lampard Bentley Pienaar Marney
Defoe Zaki Windass

play 2 from Richardson, Piennar or Ireland. With the other being 1st sub

Yet again I’ve not used my freebie until now, and yet again I have a 50-50 choice. Bentley or Modric. I’ll mull it over for 10 minutes.
[Reply]
Reply by JWF on November 15 11:20 am:
Probably Bentley for today - more chance of a goal coming from a set-piece/cross. Having said that it might take a bit of Modric magic to unlock the Fulham defence. So no help there then!

anyone got positive news on traore?
[Reply]
Reply by the Moz on November 15 11:21 am:
All evidence so far is that Traore will be benched and may come on for a 1 pointer.
Belhadj scored and is looking good.
Paramot is a more solid defender than Belhadj.
Traore is on loan
Kranjcar has slowly taken obver form Traore over the last 3-4 fixtures.
[Reply]
Reply by Pasqualinho on November 15 11:43 am:
Moz - think you misread the question…
For positive news, there’s no definite evidence (yet) that Adams has decided to do without Traore - He was due a rest, and got one last week. As Kranjcar was deployed on the right for the last game then Adams may go for that again and bring in Traore for Pamarot - and then decide which one of Traore and Belhadj goes LM and which one goes LB. We’ll probably get a better idea later today - but the consunsus of opinion is definitely to wait as, although Traore’s ownership has dropped, people don’t seem to be shipping him out en-masse.

can someone tell me if kenwyn jones is likely to start for sunderland?
[Reply]
The Zaki situation is driving me crazy. Sky are still not mentioning anything about him being doubtful but they havenow picked up the Chech injury. I’ve got 14 minutes to decide if I need to take a 4pt hit and upgrade a sub toreplace Zaki this week. Anyone got any further news?
[Reply]
or should i go with zaki or saha?
[Reply]
Akkers,
myself have gone for the modric option. Slightly cheaper and he is slowly and surely getting into his groove. Although Bentley may hav first choice on set-peices…
Modric may hav more of a box threat…
[Reply]
whats the big deal with regards to zaki??
if he dont play then one of your substitutions willl come one and maybe get 6 point..
relax. take it easy… and reap
[Reply]
Reply by JWF on November 15 11:24 am:
Sadly Alex is also out so Fig comes in for him. My other subs are unlikely to start. Have the cash to upgrade Alex but the 4pt hit means it’s onoy worth it if Zaki doesn’t play.

10 mins to decide…
Would it be wise to put anelka (or anyone else) in for torres?
It would cost a 4 point hit though, i’m in two minds as i beleive torres could do same damage whether he starts or finishes. The problem is that anelka could score 4, 5 maybe even 6 today!
Also whats the consensus on lampard or ronaldo for captain, i’m leaning towards lampard again, cheers.

Torres is the best striker in the world. Anyone who has him, stick with him.

last minute transfer confirmed….
zaki out, bent in. all these rumours combined with lack of form and the whole transfer saga and zamalek bullshit, are making me feel uneasy about zaki.
have shipped him out. spurs look good for goals at the minute and bent is on form.

crazy decision to take out zaki if he plays or not.

[Reply]
Hey guys i think there is no need to sell zaki (just now b4 the deadline) for someone 1 if it entails a 4 pt hit. Ur transfer would have to score a goal to break even at the very least. What if he doesnt? or what if ur auto sub grabs a clean sheet/assist/goal? and what if ur new transfer gets injured? well u will need to spend 0.6 more to get zaki in again if u had bought him at 6.0 and so there is no point in transferring zaki out (b4 the deadline which just passed).
