I still need to work on the full “Season Ticker” and I need to firm up the colour allocations a little to ensure I’m being consistent. This will come later this evening.
For now though, soak up the opening five and speculate on who will come out of the blocks fastest. My first impressions – somebody obviously has it in for Burnley, while all three of Chelsea, United and Liverpool appear to have strong platforms for a decent start. Not so sure on Arsenal.

I made the right choice in dropping Elano then, perfect transfer there even after he just got two assists.
On the flip side I brought in Alves for Cannavaro (who looks likely to be fit enough for tonight too, bugger on that one).

Annoyed about Alves not playing, but you can’t expect him to keep Maicon out. Can’t afford him not to make some sort of appearance though, it’s like 30 points or something for an appearance.

Alves didn’t come on for even 2 minutes. Also my captain Kaka, and Fabiano didn’t get full appearances, so an all alround sh*tty game for me. Yet more mediocrity from me.

He may think what he has is good enough? and just add dodo (i thought they were extinct? must be very expensive if he is the last one on earth!) and a few other expensive prospects a la nani and andersson 20m signings a couple of years ago. i am thinking along the same lines.
If he goes with berbatov and rooney up front he can play either park, giggs, scholes, nani there if one of the first two gets injured or he wants to rest them. He also has welbeck and macheda to come in if he thinks they are on form and ready for it. I think valencia will come in and maybe another few prospects as i said earlier. If hargreeves is fit he is another player who has played on both wings for bayern in the past so its not shaping up to be too bad (as long as rooney and berbatov do the business).
Dont forget tevez either he is not gone yet and maybe fergie is trying to leave it late in the summer to tie him down so it feels like a new signing to utd’s players?
Valencia is a definate as you guys are suggesting, interesting thought on the benzema situation Cantona. I still see him as the most realistic target out of the names being mentioned, and who’s to say SAF wont consider playing rooney wide again next season? Personally i think it would be a mistake to but it would accomadate the benzema signiture. I here what your saying Dino with the Tevez situation but i really dont think SAF would risk taking his time over the Tevez issue with all the interest around him at the moment, i would think he is out of the equation for utd next season.
By the way, has it been revealed who the third club bidding for Antnio Valencia is? If not, then it’s gotta be Spurs. they’re always just bidding for players link with other clubs, rather than identifying their own transfer targets. Do they even have scouts?
Anyways, I think SAF might make a bid for a player that is slightly left-field, maybe someone that hasn’t been so heavily link with a move. I reckon on the Benzmea – Tevez front, it’ll be one or the other, not both. SAF’s probably waiting on the Tevez situation before weighing up a bid for Benzema, or anyone else bar Valencia.

I reckon to retain the title this year we will need to sign a couple of star players like the 3 i named but if it is really young prospect players purchased like Douglas Costa or Alexis Sanchez we will possibly come up a bit short.
Saying that though,if Tevez was kept and Hargreaves keeps injury free,we would be in with a good shout also.
Yeh, Hargreaves would have been a huge plus for you last season, not that you needed more. If anything, Man U’s problems are small as you have excellent players (and decent depth) in the middle and across the back. You pretty much only need another winger (and if Tevez leaves, another forward) and you’re sorted. I agree that Rooney should be played centrally though, for fantasy returns more than anything!
I’d much rather be in the market for a few attacking players anyway, rather than be hunting for a new central defensive partnership and a lynchpin holding midfielder

I bought in Khedira for Milner. I already had Ozil as I knew he got a sh*tload of assists in the Bundesliga for Weder Bremen last season. So 13 points from the two of them isn’t too bad.
I’m assuming Gabby Aggy got injured (I’m watching Egypt beating Italy so I can’t be sure) as the uefa text hints towards that. Not a clue how serious it is though. Campbell could be a decent bet for next week.

he seemed to be on them when barry was not there last year so i would think so. He may be another barry for next year as he started scoring goals towards the end of last season and if he starts taking the set pieces as well he may be a good 6-6.5m midfielder. I have in my players to watch for next season.

Bit bad that their is no mom bonus points though as two assists and running the show only gets as many points as howedes? still cant complain as dejagah did the business also and the cheapo german defender who came in for their injured guy (this 4 transfers/round gives a lot of room to change your team around).

Man U really need another goalscorer, Tevez gets goals – but you wouldn’t bank on him getting you the 20 a season needed.
he is a class act and the only reason he doesnt get the headlines rooney gets is because he is not english imo. I would say with a decent run in the team he will get close to 20gls a season. If i was sir af i would give him what he wanted as to lose both the goals of ronaldo and the industry of tevez is a massive blow to overcome.
While i am sure a team will eventually fill the gap and get used to playing without these assets it will take longer the bigger the loss imo
If tevez stays you can bank on him playing more games and probably being pretty nicely priced due to last years relative inaction. might be worth a punt?
In 12 games from mid-January to mid-April Tevez did start 9 games, was a sub in 2 and only missed 1.
In that period he only got 1 goal for United, that’s a long enough spell to expect much more him. He is a good player, I still think he underperformed. I would trade him for Benzema any day if I were SAF.
I had Tevez as my captain for week 1 last season, and he had to go back to Argentina for a bereavement so missed the game…
Of course that could have happened to anyone (bereavement, not necessarily in Argentina), but it soured him to me a little bit. Not a lot happened in the rest of the season to convince me that he’s a good choice in FPL. I think there’s going to be better choices elsewhere. I agree with Andy, I don’t think his goalscoring, even with a firm place in the team, suggests value at his price. I’d rather have another Man U defender.
Yeah, before the Ronaldo bid was accepted i looked at Tevez and thought Utd wouldnt really miss him. As mentioned his goal ratio isnt anything to get excited about but his hard work earnt him credit among the fans. Then when the Ronaldo bid was accepted i thought well maybe he could improve with more starts wide similar to the rooney role for much of last season with a Rooney/Berbatov/Tevez front 3. But for the money being quoted £26 million fee and £110g wages it seems too much for ‘hard work’ alone and for a player who doesnt push for a place in the ideal Utd starting 11. Its just a snag that by letting him go his destination will be chelsea, liverpool or city.

Rooney goes through those spells too yes, but then he has more productive spells in my opinion as well, while trying equally as hard as Tevez.
More importantly, Rooney is already a Man U player and will not cost £25m if you want him from hence forth. He’s already had his fee spent. Tevez has earnt the fans respect and credit like Del Stiero says, I just think the money could be used much more wisely now Man U have the option to do so.
fair enough i suppose its sir af opinion that matters most though eh? they should have upwards of 100m at their disposal if they want it this summer so i dont think funds would be the problem and trying to find players of a high enough quality to improve on what the top clubs have is always a gamble so i suppose it is going to be very interesting at OT before the end of the summer. same as seal. just like fpl it was a damn addictive game tho and seriously accurate re the prospects for the future and current players in smaller leagues who almost always went on to big things in real life just like in the game.
I just got a bit bored with it as it seemed to be getting to complex. when it started out first all you ahd to do was play the thing and buy the players, but then they started overloading with stats and crazy formations tempermental players etc. just got a bit too much really imo
I gave up on football manager a few years now, it just got ridiculous. I had been hooked on it, but it became far too realistic and involved…I don’t want to actually have a second job!
There’s a little community of CM01/02 players, who continually update databases with current players. As long as your current computer can support the older game, then that might be good for a bit of nostalgia!
sounds good mnl. I remember playing the original game back in 95/96 or something (could have been earlier) and it had only about 6 stats.
I figured out a formation where you put anyone with top creativity in as a sweeper and basically won everygame by a cricket score (not very chalenging but great fun).
There was no european games (i think epl clubs were still banned) and when players contracts were up the went abroad for nominal fees (like platt and gascoigne of the time).
Ah the memories ocean colour scene on in the background and days spent in front of the computer waiting to see the outcome of your match, not a lot has changed really has it :L

I’ll probably be making bad changes for round 3. Pretty chuffed and surprised to be in the top half of the league actually, after I fell to 20th the other day even though I had Capdevilla, Ramos and Villa.
I’ve only made one transfer so far so have 14 left, meaning I can make wholesale changes this round. Problem is, I might not be in to see the Group A team sheets which isn’t good.

I used to play CM 96/97 like an obsessive (and a bit of 97/98). I played them up until 2003 when I got a new computer that wouldn’t run them. Didn’t like any version later than that because they got too complicated.
Is there any way to play CM 96/97 again? It was amazing. Is it not playable online or something by now?

No, they’re all generated players. You’re in a national league, but can buy players from any team around the world.
The player skills are pretty basic (goalkeeping, defending, etc) on a 1-20 scale, which I like…stops it getting too complicated. It’s not too daunting when you get started either. Don’t know how it compares to other similar ones, there’s a few about but I’ve only tried this one, but it’s pretty good. You only need to log-in once a week to check everything’s going ok, but I’ve been a little more active in the close FPL-season.

hard to tell any but i think we might all be in the same boat. I have three italian defenders (so much for catenachio or however its spelt!) plus elano who i hope will come back in and fabregas who should be back? so much unknowns though and i’ve already used 5 transfers so only 10 left!

Vermaelen deal finally completed after he passed the medical. Expect him to start alongside Toure/Gallas/Djourou depending on who gets sold. He’s left footed and has been known to cover at left-back for Ajax. Though short he’s meant to be pretty tough; I just hope he’s tough enough to not faint when Drogba winks at him.
I actually have a hunch that Song has been earmarked to play with him in central defence, as he got the heads up over Djourou and Silvestre to play there a couple of times last season and performed pretty well, especially in dealing with high over-the-top balls. It would explain why we have not been chasing a taller, more aerial defender.
Also, if Wenger’s next purchase is a CDM then it would completely lock Song out of the first team unless he was pushed back into defence (of course, if we don’t buy a holding midfielder, then it’d be safe to say that the role is Song’s). Anyway…I wouldn’t mind some pre-season experimentation esp. as Song really upped his performances towards the end of the season.
If anyone has Setanta I’d cancel it as they’ve lost the rights to the PL matches next season. So it’s quite likely that barring the PL being idiots and not accepting lower offers that we will have free top flight football on terrestrial tv for the first time in nigh on twenty years:).

Sky can only buy half the games. Loads of people are going to cancel their subscription now, especially with the Haye/Klitschko fight called off aswell.
Sky will buy 23 of the 46 games and bump up their package a year early, BBC would be good – still most likely ESPN would buy the other half it seems.
I just sent them an e-mail saying they can take my next payment (due in a couple days), I will be unsubscribing and canceling my direct debit. They can’t complain with no PL anymore. (Setanta are notorious for being tough to get rid of apparently) I completely forgot to end of season, then after England game. Oh well, done now… last £12.99 to them going.
ESPN I believe would face an uphill struggle to set up a subscription model as Sky really would not want them putting any live football on ESPN Classic which ultimately they have control over on their platform.
Best case scenario is Sky takes package C which would allow them to avoid situations like the Merseyside derby this year and Five/BBC/ITV hammer out some sort of deal that allows them to show package D.
Worst case scenario is clearly that the PL allow the games to be unsold and returned to the home team- which means in essence that each round of fixtures would a designated game that could be sold to the highest bidder. Which would be rather confusing for all involved.
I reckon it’ll be ITV or Five that buy one package.
Even though they have their obvious flaws, I would take that in a heartbeat – to see PL games on terrestrial television would be quite brilliant.

Disagree that Sky would object to having games on ESPN. Sky are not allowed to have all the games (EU law) so somebody else has to have them. Better for Sky that it’s a channel only available on Sky. In effect Sky will have all the games forcing more people to sign up.
Oh dear, didn’t realise Setanta haven’t even got the Klitschko/Chagaev fight that is taking place as a direct replacement for the cancelled Haye fight.

Sky would rather ESPN not get involved to be honest- if by some slim chance they were able get a foothold in the market and make a profit they’d be a threat to Sky. Sky would rather restrict them off the bat and than run the risk.
It would be excellent if somehow the BBC were able to get even a 10-12 games, would compliment their Championship coverage well. However the only terrestrial broadcaster who have come close to getting any of the packages is Five, so they will surely bid again.

Scoring Margin, Iraq need their victory over NZ in conjunction with SA losing to Spain to have a 4 goal swing. So they have to ‘assume’ they need to score 3 and fingers crossed SA lose by the smallest margin if they want to get through.
I’m looking at my provisional transfers now. Also tempted by Iraq striker, Iraq defender, Egypt defender. I’m worried about Alves and all my Spanish players getting rested, as well as other parts (see further up).
the spanish players is a tough one, they could rest players to keep them fresh, but more likely to give SA a chance.
spain almost always play villa, and torres hasnt played too much recently so its not like he’s that tied, surely one will play.

No clue who will start for Spain, could be anyone I’ve gambled on Capdevilla as I don’t really see any other LB’s (am I missing someone?). Iraq have to go for goals, so I took a punt. And with Alves now gone I had room for Fabiano for the final 3 games, which I wanted.
…and it appears I’ve dragged myself up from U21 embarrasment in last place, to still sub par 22/29, the only way is up baby!

No announcement has been made in this regard yet,,, However, from previous experiences, I would guess that they’re gonna launch their new season somewhere between 15-25 July.
My guess is next week / week after based on last year which I think was 5th July(?)
