A Site Update And A Birthday Wish

by Mark on June 27

Okay then. I was just a little optimistic with my last post. In truth, I’ve had a lot of technical difficulties over the last four or five days and that’s seriously dented the time I’ve had to create content and get on with other stuff behind the scenes. Apologies for the persistent downtime.

The positive news is that it looks as though stability has been restored and that my hosts have got to to the bottom of the issue. I had to disable gravatars to achieve this but, after some tinkering, I’ve now switched them back on and hope to keep the site stable. We’ll monitor this for the rest of the day.

Today is no ordinary day by the way – it’s Granville’s birthday. My podcast partner in crime and main motivation behind my fantasy season for the last three years, is celebrating with a rather large party that I’ll be attending tonight (he’s done the music playlist so I’m a little worried). I know you guys will want to pass on your best wishes to the Mancunian moaner. Cheers Granville.

I promise not to wake with a hangover tomorrow and, if all is well with stability on here, I can really begin concentrating on content for the rest of the summer.

happy belated birthday granville

…. now who to captain in the confeds cup, i only have one transfer left which will have to be for the suspended bradley, plus i have arbeloa who isnt likely to play

Bigo1 June 28 at 11:37 am

Same here, have only two transfers left and fear a massive rotation in the Spanish squad. Will captain either Kaka or Robinho, I think that SA will be motivated after a very good game against Brazil

Henry Turbot June 28 at 11:27 am

Maybe Fergie will give you Benzema as a birthday present. Hope so.

Zak June 28 at 11:49 am

testing

JWF June 28 at 1:02 pm

Better late than never, happy b’day Granville. Sore heads all round I hope.

Seal June 28 at 1:09 pm

spain team is out… http://www.fifa.com/live/compe.....index.html

looks a good strong team, maybe their out to prove a point.
i’m disappointed though to not have seen much of silva, the wonder kid that utd seem to want so badly

Andy June 28 at 1:15 pm

I wouldn’t really call Silva a ‘kid’, he’s a pretty experienced guy in the Spain side. Surely you must have seen him before? He was integral in winning the Euro’s last year for starters. He’s just back from Injury and with ‘back up’ in Fabregas now, no need to have troubled him – though Fab could very well have taken his spot now.

(I wouldn’t go as far to say that Man U want him so badly either, general reports seem to be of an ‘interest’ but nothing like their wanting of the likes of Valencia, Benzema or even Ribery).

2 Transfers left, 2 of my 4 Spaniards start (Thankyou Villa & Capdevilla). Straight swapping Xavi & Fabregas out then.

Seal June 28 at 1:19 pm

i didnt really get to see much of the euro’s and havent seen much of valencia, was just looking forward to seeing play

Seal June 28 at 1:26 pm

i’m thinking kaka is a safe captain choice, while other good options are a spanish defender or striker??

Seal June 28 at 1:31 pm

heres an interesting stat:

in brazils previous 3 confeds finals they have a goals to game ratio of 5.33
also they have won 14 games in africa, with no defeats and no draws

Lionel Luther June 28 at 3:01 pm

Granville’s the birthday boy!

jms June 28 at 3:54 pm

What a free kick from Mphela!

Andy June 28 at 3:58 pm

Am I the only one watching Spain v SA? For 70 minutes, pretty rubs game.

73rd minute, SA take the lead and Spain go flat, game over surely.
88th minute, Guiza turns and shoots – oh word, 30 minutes more of this game.
89th minute, Guiza scores a beauty lob, chip shot… wonderful – now game over.
93rd minute, Mphala scores an amazing free kick, absolute corker.

If they play as the game ended, extra time will be interesting!

djt June 28 at 4:01 pm

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANVILLE!!!

Seal June 28 at 4:14 pm

who takes off villa and torres in a game that is no where near won :(

Andy June 28 at 4:20 pm

When they’re not getting the end product – they had 60 minutes, it’s only a 3rd place play off. Guiza and Llorente are more than capable of getting the goals (which Dani did); much better backup strikers than I could ever dream us English having.

Comfy Coxy June 28 at 4:20 pm

Happy belated birthday Granville. Hope you had a good one.

Looking forward to the podcast and to some new moaning from you.

Sir Paulos June 28 at 6:30 pm

Scout tweets? Lovely.. A sign of things to come, Mark? Good to see that, after all the server problems, the site’s new features are beginning to take place. Congratulations.

Evan June 28 at 6:59 pm

wait, Mark do you/ Fanasty Scout have a Twitter page, Im a newly memeber of about an hour.

Evan June 28 at 7:03 pm

nevermind….. found it and currently “following” , next you need a facebook!

denial June 28 at 7:45 pm

wow. Dempsey.

Andy June 28 at 8:20 pm

USA wow, they’ve defended incredibly resolutely this first half. Dempsey’s shot was wow though, such a lovely deft touch there. Then the speed & passing of the counter was brilliant.

Mark Bright is getting on my nerves though, broken record. If he mentions not being able to see Pato one more time I may just flip my lid.

Ren June 28 at 8:11 pm

This twitter malarkey sounds too stalkerish to me! Happy birthday for yesterday.

Fran June 28 at 10:22 pm

The USA must be one of the best teams in the world – top 10 at least from these recent performances – Brazil were lucky to win this one!

Granville June 28 at 10:53 pm

Wow cheers for the wishes again. Still trying to piece together all the events of last night. Didn’t escape the hangover neither :(
Managed to catch some of the confed final too, lovely jubbly.

al... June 28 at 10:55 pm

well done granville you old man, i can never remmeber saturday nights, welcome to my world!

Fran June 28 at 11:04 pm

When exactly was your birthday Granville? Happy belated one from me!

granville June 29 at 8:56 am

It was on Saturday Fran.

Andy June 28 at 11:32 pm

Was a pretty sweet game, tale of two halves – but USA done themselves proud. They got too tired at the end, but they’re definitely a good team, more than the sum of their parts. You don’t always need your world beaters. See Turkey, South Korea, Senegal, USA.

al... June 28 at 10:53 pm

USA were lucky to score like they did, but well taken at that.

gota say i was mixed with either team winning, you know if the USA won we’d never hear the end of it the bloody confed cup too… on that basis i wanted Brazil to win and they did

But like i say a bit lucky with the goals they got, but then again a goals a goal, but cmon its brazil here, showing their class at the end of the day, USA would never hold on, Brazil getting nothing from the middle and with maicons croses getting nowhere, the class showed in the end even with a denied goal too, good game and well compoed and well done brazil

Tim Howard looking impressive, Clint not looking to shabby either

So thats how i feel

nice to see ur still around franifer

Fran June 28 at 11:03 pm

I agree with your comments al, Brazil are usually class, but I like to see the underdogs to do well too to make it an exciting game. Teams like USA and Australia are well capable of beating teams like Spain, France, England and Germany etc.
Expect some upsets in the next world cup as the central powers start conceding more power. Great goal from SA against Spain today – must have been 40 metres out or something like that!

Evan June 29 at 3:15 am

I disagree. Yes the goals against Italy (the PK), and the 2 againt Spain were 100 percent lucky, but the two goals today werent so much. The demepsy goal was half lucky, but the donovan counter attack was all skill, finally he showed some sort of it in about 2 years.

Fran June 28 at 11:06 pm

Anyone knows where the podcast is? Been looking for it on the website but might have been taken off as the site is still under maintanence?

Marknlard June 28 at 11:17 pm

I ate it. Dunked it in my tea.

It was all that was left after Billy ate all the best biscuits. Just left pink wafers, you can’t dunk a pink wafer.

Andy June 28 at 11:34 pm

No podcast as of yet Fran, don’t worry your little head.

granville June 29 at 8:55 am

Sorry guys, we’ve been waiting for things to stabilise before doing the podcast.

Andy June 28 at 11:35 pm

Anybody else watching Blur at Glastonbury and being taken back? I knew they’d reformed but it never dawned on me again until now how Blur are effing ace! So jealous of the people I know there.

Evan June 29 at 5:42 am

test the website thing.

Seal June 29 at 6:44 am

woohoo!! i won the confeds cup league, and 9th overall :D

it was a pretty good tournament too, however i doubt i’ll be playing any kind of world cup fantasy game as i just can’t enjoy the games if i’m willing someone to score

Bigo1 June 29 at 7:46 am

Well done!
Lucky you did not finish in the top 3…:
‘Our top 3 finishing managers in the Global League will each win an Edgars hamper consisting of: T-shirt, Cap, Ball, Lanyard and Cellphone Dangler.

Prizes will only be delivered to South African physical addresses.’

Steve June 29 at 8:13 am

Well done Seal, there were some good showings from this site in the fanatsy confed cup.

On a related note does anyone else think that Donovan looks a bit like Iniesta?

Marknlard June 29 at 9:30 am

What on earth is a Lanyard? And a Cellphone Dangler?

I know what T-shirts, caps and balls are.

granville June 29 at 9:53 am

A Lanyard is something worn around the neck. Normally a key or a whistle, etc.. A lot of MP3 players come with a lanyard which you plug the headphones into.

Marknlard June 29 at 9:57 am

Aaaah. I think Yer Dad uses a lanyard for his specs.

Andy June 29 at 10:12 am

Yeah, stirling prize on off that!

Marknlard June 29 at 10:20 am

Any ideas why it has to come in a hamper?!

Andy June 29 at 10:36 am

Yeah, I would imagine it should come in one of those backpacks 12 year olds use made of plastic and string.

Hampers are for picanic baskets!

Andy June 29 at 9:13 am

Well done Seal, just pipped me to it.

If I had gone with my original plan of Cazorla instead of Riera, and giving Fabiano the armband – I would have just snuck the win. But I didn’t in the end, and went ’safe’.

So well done again.

After tonight no more football to watch, dang. On past 2 years precedent FPL should be up and running soon for us tinkerers to play about with while we enjoy 6 weeks in the sun.

Seal June 29 at 11:02 am

hah i didnt see the prizes, shame i would have sent it to some random address in SA, i’m sure someone would have liked it :D

most teams were pretty similar, it was mostly just about luck

now time to start scouting…..

Dino June 29 at 1:09 pm

yeah well done, some inspired choices there. I agree with you re not playing at next years world cup it is a bit of a head wreck just pivking players for individual games rather than looking at a run of games to get you some points and with these cup comps there is so much rafatation it is near impossible to pick a starting eleven

Daniel June 29 at 9:15 am

Happy birthday Granvile

Marknlard June 29 at 11:35 am

Eto’o might be on his way to Man C, they’ve had a £25m bid accepted (according to link above)- which is hardly the stratospheric offer that the Barca pres was talking about.

And the small matter of a quarter of a million per week!

A couple of months ago, there were a few posters here saying that Eto’o was overrated. I’ve always thought he’s been one of the leading types of modern centreforward, fast, powerful, great shot, good in the air…can’t see why he wouldn’t be a success next season at Man C. Though if they do get Tevez as well, that’s a lot of attacking egos to keep happy.

Marknlard June 29 at 11:36 am

Though the link has now been edited, no longer says accepted…

Andy June 29 at 11:53 am

I agree on Eto’o being a truly great centre forward, he’s perfect in the role. Much like Fabiano has been for Brazil this cup lately, someone ‘bigger’ should sign him. They score goals.

£25m is pretty large though, he’s 28 (not past it – but not young) and only has 1 year left on his contract. But when Laporta was talking of a stratospheric offer, he was actually referring to the wages Man City have supposedly let him have. (£180k after tax, or £320 normal).
