Scout Notes

Tuesday’s Scout Notes – Gameweek Twenty Two

Some brilliance from Nani and a typically cheeky finish from the “Little Pea” is just enough for United to grind down Stoke’s resistance at Old Trafford. Fulham claw their way back up the table as they brush past the injury-ravaged Baggies at the Cottage, while Birmingham do a job on Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, despite another Charlie Adam inspired attacking display…

Alex Ferguson sprung a couple of surprises in his starting lineup – Twitter fan, Rio Ferdinand was rested ahead of Sunday’s looming FA Cup clash with Liverpool, while Edwin van der Sar was again missing in goal with illness blamed for his absence. Wayne Rooney was the big absentee however – the ankle injury sustained late on against West Brom kept him out of this one. Javier Hernandez took his place, Chris Smalling assumed the role alongside Nemanja Vidic in defence.

Once again United won the game in second gear – rarely threatening to put the game beyond Stoke, despite the visitors affording them room to exploit their talents – particularly in the first-half. Nani enjoyed a strong game and emphasised his Fantasy value by notching his sixth goal and eleventh assist of the season; with 2 Bonus also arriving at his door, this was the sixth time that Nani has recorded double figures for FPL returns.

Rooney’s absence had a predictable effect on Dimitar Berbatov’s goal threat. Our Members can see for themselves that the Bulgarian often came deeper to start the play and his “Touches” and “Passes” confirm that he was heavily involved. With just one attempt on goal however, Berbatov was again happy to forgo opportunities to score without Rooney’s prompting and feeding in tandem. Hernandez had far fewer touches, made fewer passes but had 3 attempts on goal, one of which was his smart, improvised finish for the opening goal which help to earn him 3 Bonus Points.

Ian Holloway handed a start to Matt Phillips who was rewarded for a number of eye-catching displays from the bench. Elsewhere, Blackpool lined up as expected in a 4-3-3 formation.

Charlie Adam offered some reward for the faith put in him by FPL Managers; the Scot dominated the game for long periods from the middle of the park and only the post denied him a goal in a performance that was again acknowledged with FPL Bonus Points.

Alex McLeish dropped Jean Beausejour to his bench and handed starts to Keith Fahey and Alexander Hleb as Lee Bowyer began his three-match ban. The inclusion of Hleb certainly paid off as the Belarusian grabbed his first Premier League goal for the Blues, after a Stephen Crainey error. Hleb obviously has bags of ability and could be worth monitoring as he looks to find some consistency after struggling with injury and form.

Popular FPL defender had a Scott Dann grabbed the winning goal for Birmingham in the 89th minute, lifting them out of the relegation places and giving Birmingham their first win at Blackpool since 1960. Dann has now picked-up 67 FPL points this season a good return for a defender priced at just £4.8 million and this hasn’t gone unnoticed amongst FPL managers with an ownership of 10.4%.

Birimingham recorded their first away win of the season, a record that Birmingham-owning FPL Managers will be pleased to see the back of. Alex McLeish was also unsurprisingly jubilant with the outcome

“I’m absolutely delighted to win and mostly because it was away from home. It means people will stop asking about the away record. It is only one [win] in six months yet it is three valuable points.”

Mark Hughes opted for Senegalese striker Diomansy Kamara to spearhead his attack and this was the only change to the Fulham side which lost to Tottenham on New Year’s Day, the forward took the place of Andy Johnson in the lone striker role as the Welshman once again opted for a 4-4-1-1 formation.

Pre-match reports seemed to suggest that striker and Mousa Dembele would recover from an ankle injury and return to the line-up, but it appears that the Belgian striker failed to prove his fitness in time for the kick-off. Expect the player to be back in action for the next Premier League clash with Wigan on January 15, if not sooner in the FA Cup against Peterborough on Saturday.

FPL high-flyers Clint Dempsey and Brede Hangeland continued to prove their worth for both Fulham and Fantasy Managers by impressing a goal each. But it was Simon Davies who really won the FPL plaudits, notching-up a Gameweek total of 17 including: 1 goal, 2 assists and 3 bonus points.

James Hurst and Gianni Zuiverloon came into the West Brom defence in what was an otherwise unchanged starting line-up. They replace Steven Reid, who will be ruled out for six weeks after tearing his cartilage in Saturday’s defeat by Manchester United, and Ibanez Pablo who also suffered an ankle knock in the same game.

West Brom defender Marek Cech limped off after 33 minutes with a knock to be replaced by Nicky Shorey. The full extent of the injury is unclear and anything serious will come as a massive blow to a battered Baggies defence that, as well as those mentioned above, is already missing Gabriel Tamas through suspension and Jonas Olsson with an Achilles injury.

absolutely, i ended up taking a hit to bring him in for drogs. i figure he should be able to match or beat drogs points haul this week with an extra game against weaker defences. what hurt the most is that i lost .5 on drogs alone since i held onto him for so long and originally bought at 12.9.

I think he will. Mancini still obviously thinks he's the best left-back at the club, so why wouldn't you play him in a big game like this? This "he'll never play against Walcott" thing is being treated as gospel, but I still think he'll play.

"Never has so much been said by so few about feck all." That could be the motto of this site, it is a bit addictive but after a while it becomes hard to find a nugget and most of the advice has been fool's gold to date. The problem with this new wildcard is that everyone will have a similar team and the hardest thing is to find a differential, especially as this site can turn a differential into a must have player so what is my point well you will have to figure it out as I am just adding to the much said about feck all.

So you are searching for a site that will tell you what to do, but at the same time is cool and discrete with their advice? So what sites do you suggest are better for getting the latest news or advice on FPL potential? Or do you just do your own, completely independent research and come up with the best options?

Most don't have particularly good histories in FPL, if any at all. I think only two on the first page have ever had at top 10k finish before.

People keep saying we're all about to get the saem teams, but there aren't many players that are REALLY standing out, fixture list is all over the palce, teams forms are all over the place, double gameweeks and transfers thrown into the window and for me it's about to get interesting!

the interesting thing is players that are doing very well are actually affordable this season, so everyone can have them. in the past this wasn't really possible, with lampard, ronaldo etc dominating people had to be quite careful with how they spend the rest.

your gonna have serious trouble dropping any of you front 8 players especially with adam having several gameweeks coming up.

Thanks for the input. I like the selection headache. After having so many injuries ruin my gamweeks I'd love to have trouble dropping players.

Agreed with the top 4 defender but I'm finding it diffcult to drop any of the front 8. And as a gunner I have to have Cesc in my team which is killing my budget

DJ is a gamble I'm willing to take. 4 others are more or less guaranteed starters.

Have to disagree with you there Attila, we need a commanding keeper, Given would be another Fabianski with Arsenal's playing style. Great shot stopper but no command of the area. Not sure Samba is the answer either, overrated in my opinion. Better then Squillaci though.

Thats not true with Given, With Ireland we never have much of the ball thus under pressure alot and he commands his area.

He would be a great purchase but obviously wont go.
Word is City may let him go on loan but only to Italy where he has some suitors. But it seems more likely he will remain until summer on bench,

He does tend to stay n his line when crosses come in thought doesn't he? That would be suicidal at times seeings as none of our defenders are capable of winning an aerial duel at the moment.

I don't think any of those three players would represent good value for money for Arsenal.

Given and Carroll would be expensive as hell and Samba is not the player he's made out to be imo.

That's actually a brilliant tactic. He basicaly doubled up on high priced defenders who usually keep cleansheets at home and sometimes away. Minium 12 points from each pair. Add that to the high quality midfield and he's truly laughing at the top

there's bound be one or two of those. we've all had them but he shud get credit for a lot more than a lot of other teams that are up there just on sheer originality of his plan.

Nah, Ronaldo was quite hit and miss in his final season, and f*cking expensive. You needed to cover him, Lampard an Gerrard though, which meant a cheap forward line (strikers weren't doing much anyway) and all the extra cash going into the defence.

United had their record clean sheet run that year, and Liverpool were pretty tight too, so with Bosingwa starting at 6.0, expensive defences were the way to go.

Thinking about using my WC before gw 23 to get this team for 23 and 24:

    Foster - Al-Habsi
    Rafael - Skrtel - Evatt - Bardsley - Foley
    Nani - Fabregas - N'Zogbia - VDV - Adam
    Rooney - Torres - Carroll

Then use free transfers to get this team for 27:

    Foster - Al-Habsi
    Rafael - Dann - Evatt - Bardsley - Foley
    Nani - Fabregas - Brunt - VDV - Adam
Van Persie - Rooney - Carroll

Then do Van Persie -> Drogba before gw28 since Arsenal-Spurs most likely will be postponed (Carling cup finale the day after) and Chelsea got a dgw the same week.

    Any thoughts?
