Scout Notes

Tuesday’s Scout Notes – Gameweek Twenty Two

Some brilliance from Nani and a typically cheeky finish from the “Little Pea” is just enough for United to grind down Stoke’s resistance at Old Trafford. Fulham claw their way back up the table as they brush past the injury-ravaged Baggies at the Cottage, while Birmingham do a job on Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, despite another Charlie Adam inspired attacking display…

Alex Ferguson sprung a couple of surprises in his starting lineup – Twitter fan, Rio Ferdinand was rested ahead of Sunday’s looming FA Cup clash with Liverpool, while Edwin van der Sar was again missing in goal with illness blamed for his absence. Wayne Rooney was the big absentee however – the ankle injury sustained late on against West Brom kept him out of this one. Javier Hernandez took his place, Chris Smalling assumed the role alongside Nemanja Vidic in defence.

Once again United won the game in second gear – rarely threatening to put the game beyond Stoke, despite the visitors affording them room to exploit their talents – particularly in the first-half. Nani enjoyed a strong game and emphasised his Fantasy value by notching his sixth goal and eleventh assist of the season; with 2 Bonus also arriving at his door, this was the sixth time that Nani has recorded double figures for FPL returns.

Rooney’s absence had a predictable effect on Dimitar Berbatov’s goal threat. Our Members can see for themselves that the Bulgarian often came deeper to start the play and his “Touches” and “Passes” confirm that he was heavily involved. With just one attempt on goal however, Berbatov was again happy to forgo opportunities to score without Rooney’s prompting and feeding in tandem. Hernandez had far fewer touches, made fewer passes but had 3 attempts on goal, one of which was his smart, improvised finish for the opening goal which help to earn him 3 Bonus Points.

Ian Holloway handed a start to Matt Phillips who was rewarded for a number of eye-catching displays from the bench. Elsewhere, Blackpool lined up as expected in a 4-3-3 formation.

Charlie Adam offered some reward for the faith put in him by FPL Managers; the Scot dominated the game for long periods from the middle of the park and only the post denied him a goal in a performance that was again acknowledged with FPL Bonus Points.

Alex McLeish dropped Jean Beausejour to his bench and handed starts to Keith Fahey and Alexander Hleb as Lee Bowyer began his three-match ban. The inclusion of Hleb certainly paid off as the Belarusian grabbed his first Premier League goal for the Blues, after a Stephen Crainey error. Hleb obviously has bags of ability and could be worth monitoring as he looks to find some consistency after struggling with injury and form.

Popular FPL defender had a Scott Dann grabbed the winning goal for Birmingham in the 89th minute, lifting them out of the relegation places and giving Birmingham their first win at Blackpool since 1960. Dann has now picked-up 67 FPL points this season a good return for a defender priced at just £4.8 million and this hasn’t gone unnoticed amongst FPL managers with an ownership of 10.4%.

Birimingham recorded their first away win of the season, a record that Birmingham-owning FPL Managers will be pleased to see the back of. Alex McLeish was also unsurprisingly jubilant with the outcome

“I’m absolutely delighted to win and mostly because it was away from home. It means people will stop asking about the away record. It is only one [win] in six months yet it is three valuable points.”

Mark Hughes opted for Senegalese striker Diomansy Kamara to spearhead his attack and this was the only change to the Fulham side which lost to Tottenham on New Year’s Day, the forward took the place of Andy Johnson in the lone striker role as the Welshman once again opted for a 4-4-1-1 formation.

Pre-match reports seemed to suggest that striker and Mousa Dembele would recover from an ankle injury and return to the line-up, but it appears that the Belgian striker failed to prove his fitness in time for the kick-off. Expect the player to be back in action for the next Premier League clash with Wigan on January 15, if not sooner in the FA Cup against Peterborough on Saturday.

FPL high-flyers Clint Dempsey and Brede Hangeland continued to prove their worth for both Fulham and Fantasy Managers by impressing a goal each. But it was Simon Davies who really won the FPL plaudits, notching-up a Gameweek total of 17 including: 1 goal, 2 assists and 3 bonus points.

James Hurst and Gianni Zuiverloon came into the West Brom defence in what was an otherwise unchanged starting line-up. They replace Steven Reid, who will be ruled out for six weeks after tearing his cartilage in Saturday’s defeat by Manchester United, and Ibanez Pablo who also suffered an ankle knock in the same game.

West Brom defender Marek Cech limped off after 33 minutes with a knock to be replaced by Nicky Shorey. The full extent of the injury is unclear and anything serious will come as a massive blow to a battered Baggies defence that, as well as those mentioned above, is already missing Gabriel Tamas through suspension and Jonas Olsson with an Achilles injury.

How cheap would he have to be for people to take a punt? I reckon he will be valued at 9.5 but I'd go for him if he was below 8 and looked likely to be a regular.

tevez steals all the city pts., therefore no need to gamble on anyone else as he'll likely share time w/balotelli in rotation w/ade and santa cruz set to leave.

He's an excellent header of the ball, a good finisher and has good intelligence, movement and technique. Not particularly fast as he's fairly strong and big.

Always hard to tell how much of a hit a player will be in a new league, but from what I've seen he has what it takes.

Hasn't a big criticism of Dzeko been he can't play up front on his own as effectively as he can with a partner?

Him and Grafite ripped up the Bundesliga a couple of seasons ago, but when Shecond Choice Shteve tried to play him in a 4-2-3-1 it all went to bits (there may have been more behind that to be fair, just relaying what I've heard on FW).

I've also heard comparisons to Berbatov.

I'll be honest here, I don't know. I've not read enough about Wolfsburg lately I suppose.

Regarding the Berbatov comparison I can absolutely understand that. In style they are rather similar, mainly because of the way their bodies are built I'd suppose. Ibrahimovic is another one I'd place in that category.

I don't think I've watched enough bad games from Dzeko to really compare him to the other two though, he's always looked good when I've turned on.

Cheers. Only thing I've heard about him is that he doesn't like to play alone upfront with wingers or wing forwards so will be interesting to see how he fits into man city's system or will they change to fit him in and what that does to tevez.

Dbronaldo has already ordered his shirt with Beckham 7, a mug, a poster and a lunchbox.
Personally I think he will probably do more for Spurs in terms of helping them train rather than on the pitch, he is back for such a short span and will take a few weeks to get fitness back.

If he goes on loan Spurs lose money as they will have to pay.

And La will get him back tired for pre season.

And when did Beckham become a coach???

I reckon it's about cost neutral tbh.
1.5m for the loan can easily be recouped in additional interest. I heard that Milan made a profit. (I'm not suggesting Spurs are Milan, but that it wont 'cost' so much).

Plus - if Beckham can teach Lennon something (anything) about his delivery, then the 1.5m will be easily recouped in his value.

            I like the idea.

I dont understand the assumption Beckham can teach anyone how to cross.

Its a learned skill which took him thousands of hours to perfect and he has no expertise in coaching either

Its a nonsense. Besides Lennon has been training with Becks for about 4 years between early 2005 - 2009.

That's as blinkered as my Spurs love.

IF he can teach him ANYTHING (or Bale, or Huddlestone, or Rose etc.). I'm not expecting miracles, but I can't see why not.
If he does nothing other than prove to them that 'it's a learned skill etc. etc." then that's coaching, no?
Who needs expertise? it's 2 months!

Isnt it Harry jobs and his coaches to teach players something

So your bring in a player with nothing but Pr left to act as a coach but who has no coaching experience and so he wont play and his main role will be to coach?

So Spurs need Beckham to come half way across the world, with the media circus, the papparazi, the money and all the nonsense so they can see if he can teach lennon something its taken him 15 years to master?

I dont get it Anorak. I think it could ruin yer amazing season.

Could do I suppose. I don't see it though.
Harry, Joe and Clive can still coach. Having Tim Sherwood and Les Ferdinand about hasn't hurt (could argue that Jamie is less useful though).

"Premier league football club spooked by Media circus" I don't see that either.

I get what you are saying, but I don't agree (and you are starting to teach me that I shouldn't have bothered reasoning with you - you don't have some coaching expertise do you?)

        Hehe.

        I actually had a beckham mug! 😀

Btw why do you think Beckham will help them train. he has no experience coaching and his method of taking a free kick is by thousands of hours of practice.

I dont see how people will think Beckham can "teach" ppl how to cross. If that was the case he wouldnt be pissing about in LA.

not about taking freekicks obviously, but moreso how to put that kind of dedication and work ethic in as a true professional. he's class and that kind of positive energy rubs off to others, especially younger players and can serve as a type of role model day in/out on the training ground. look at what scholes and giggs do for united as an example.

Beckham is no more of a model professional than the likes of Modric , Bale Dawson etc etc

who work hard, train hard , play well for years and dont get this credit. What does Beckham bring that they dont?

Its a real nonsense Beckham is "a role model" when there are hundreds of others who do exactly the same.

Im sure Lennnon will love have Beckham there , the 35 year who has been in his way for years and is his direct competition.

What it will do is turn spurs into a circus and I wouldnt be surprised if Spurs form nose dives there after.

Of course il keep banging the drum

                Its bloody true.

Beckham the model professional taking 6mil a year from a team and then forcing them to loan him out by talking behind their backs to foreign clubs.

I know i get it he was yer captain, did some pictures with blood on the jersey and is a good role model (dont mention the affair btw )but its a load of nonsense became can bring some passion and proffesionalism to Spurs

Its also deeply disrespectful to suggest Spurs players who have been pretty perfect on and off the field for the last year need Beckham to show em how to cross a ball and how to "behave and show passion"

Only with Beckham. Il try to enjoy the ride when yet again things will prove correct in the longterm

Hmmm...Wolves are undoubtedly inconsistent but they more than matched Chelsea for long periods in the reverse fixture in October. They've already claimed the scalps of Liverpool & Manchester City this season and I reckon they've got a chance of ruffling some more well preened feathers this evening.

I'll go for a 1-1 draw although I have been known to be wrong before!

Ferreira will probably play against more adept attacking teams but Chelsea have fairly good fixtures coming up which will probably see increased game time for Bosingwa.

Seeing as he took about three years to do anything for Bolton he would certainly be a long term investment

Hows this for a team for GW 23 and 24?

    Gordon - Stockdale

Hangeland - Rafael- Dann - Bardsley - Evatt

Nasri - Fabregas - Yaya Toure - Albrighton

    Torres - Tevez - Drogba

Not sure, but he must surely be the most valuable player in Premier League history in terms of accrued transfer costs?

He's right up there. Coventry, Inter, Leeds, Sp*rs, Liverpool, Sp*rs again and now Brum. Celtic may have paid a bit for his loan too.

If Carroll goes to Spurs will he become a rotation risk?
If he goes a game or 2 without scoring at NEW hes still in the squad. Not sure he starts every game with Defoe Pav and Crouch as striker competition.

Just finished watching "Phone booth", very much in love with the film? Any film buff here recommend some similar movies.

BTW are the squad sheets out? Want to know if the big greek is starting or not.
