Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

Anyone know the situation in fulhams back four?

I had senderos based in his game time pre season and gameweek one etc but he seems to have fallen out of favour now.

Is Briggs a real option or only short term? If so it means I'll have to look elsewhere

    Vorm (Ruddy)
Bosingwa Enrique R.Taylor De Laet Simpson
    Silva Young Walcott Barkley Dyer
    Suarez Dzeko Rooney
1.5 in the bank, will upgrade one of Simpson/R.Taylor (whoever seems to lose out to Santon) to either Smalling or even Andre Santos if he comes in at the right price.

Youre team is the Point Chasers Utd, but looks good.

You have Simpson, so enough Newcastle. It seems despite the fixtures, that Stoke are very strong a the back still, so maybe Woodgate as a cheapish way in??

Point chasers UTD? arent we all chasing points?
I said one of the Newcastle boys will go, but not worth a four point hit.
Only Walcott and Young werent in my team last week so not really knee-jerking (perhaps with Young but VDV injury and price rise forced that upon itself.

Obviously there is the whole nasri/silva debate but unless you're on a wc then Id stick with silva

Not convinced by Barkley tbh, I'd upgrade him to either brunt, Anderson, Jarvis etc

Wouldn't have two newcase defenders, their form can't last forever and I generally think it's better to have some more depth, when Norwich and Newcastle have tough fixtures at the same week you'll have issues choosing your starting eleven

For f**k sake...wish i'd known this before i angrily ditched Torres for Kun on Saturday night ahead of Torres' supposed price fall.....
"Aguero faces a long-haul trip to India and Bangladesh for Argentina’s exhibition matches against Venezuela and Nigeria – and that will be key in Roberto Mancini’s thinking, as the latter match takes place just three days before the Wigan clash. That match begins a hectic period of seven games in the space of three weeks, including Champions League clashes with Napoli – just four days after Wigan – and Bayern Munich."
I might end up using both my free transfers changing Torres -> Aguero -> Dzeko. Perfect.

With all these people getting ridiculous price rises by using their wildcards, are they going to have a huger advantage of those of us that haven't or will we get our turn to jump on price rises when they won't be able too?

It's not just about the 0.2 price risers you know... any player a wildcarder get's in who goes up 0.1, he's still got a 0.1 advantage over any non-wildcarder who wants to get that player in the future.

I thought you were talking about an advantage by having more money to use on other players. But in the case you're talking about. of course they have an advantage if they get a player before he rises. That's a given.

they will have an advantage but not because of price rises (that won't be so huge)... the advantge is they will bring players in and out during the week, playing with their values, and they won't be stuck with injuried players in international dutties...

Remember how much everyones teams changed from GW1 and GW2 when we had a free wildcard. Those people who wildcard now will get an early team value advantage but imho thats offset by the fact some of their team will consist of players who are on a good streak, instead of consistent season long form. I was tempted to wildcard myself after 3 terrible weeks but I think if you hold out till at least GW8 you can be a lot more sure of your team.

i agree with you with the constitency.. but a 5-1 and 8-2 before a international pause, was to hard to ignore... it was predictable the market would go crazy, and it was a good timing to sell players who were going to drop value.
some of them are keepers for season, some are not... imo dzeko at 8.5 is a keeper. it's a lil bit kneejerking, altough at 8.5 i think is a smart move...i've seen worse (aguerowagon with swansea perhaps)

Baines is at 46% to fall on FISO, which seems to be much more reliable than TotalFPL. Don't think its at all guaranteed that he'll fall this GW.

Snap, and its not knee-jerking either.

VDV is out and dropped in price (didnt see that one).

Nzog isn't scoring and likely to drop in price.

Ohara not scoring either, despite playing well.

Sinclair done nothing and up against arsenal next.

Ive also got Surman (dont ask, i swapped moses for him).

Only reason people are wildcarding is Dzeko.

Imagine in 2 weeks if Hernandez scores a hat trick, it'll be the same thing again but people will have to take hits. Sod the price changes.

There's really not a lot of options at 5.0, you either want a player in a solid team who will definitely play with a good chance of getting a clean sheet bonus and maybe bonus points (Mikel, Lucas)

Or a player who might grab the odd goal in a weaker team (Dyer, Barkley)

There are a lot better options at 5.5 if you can stretch to that though, much more attacking players in good teams such as Petrov, Tchoyi (if Odem continues his knack), Watson (on pens).

Outside gambles would be Formica and Sidwell, who I think will both do well when their teams pick up in form/have nicer fixtures.

Got absolutely shafted on the weekend as had Torres/Silva/Nani instead of Rooney/Nasri/Young and Bent as captain!

Have 2 free transfers this week and as thinking of jumping on the bandwagon with :

    Torres- Rooney
    Bent- Dzeko or suarez
    Nani- nasri or young

That would cost 4 points but then again I could change the entire team on a WC and bring in all the big guns in midfield as well.

Any thoughts as I'm already 50 points behind the leaders thanks to captain rooney!

Torres score big? When's the last time that has happened?

It will interesting to see how much playing time Nani gets when Valencia comes back into the team.

Silva should and will be a big aprt of this City team. I doubt he'll get rotated much and is very influential in their attack.

I think with all the talent at City Silva will increasingly be more of a Modric player - integral to the team but pretty useless to fantasy managers.

Silva is the second assist man and admirably unselfish. unselfish in that City lineup? Means the points go elsewhere.

Dammit, i really dont want to play my WC, but VDV injury and price drop has left me with a ropey looking midfield next week. And with all these price rises i may have no choice.

Also got Nzog probable price drop (and lack of form) to consider. Hardest start to a season ever for me. Incredibly difficult to know what to do.

Sitting tight, swapped Ruddy for Vorm to avoid potential price drop and that's it.

I have Lescott/Kompany at home next game, and RVP against Swansea. The only way I can improve is to sell RVP and Lescott to upgrade Bale/Sinclair, but knowing this season I am 100% confident that will backfire! RVP looks like he has goals, got two this week and missed the pen as well remember, City due a clean sheet too. Sod price rises, I'm w/carding afte gameweek 4 if City concede again and RVP gets injured on international duty! Beware international weeks, be lucky to have half a dozen fit players at the end of this fortnight!

Thinking of playing my WC this week (for various reasons I won't go into now). What is this team lacking? Do I need to downgrade one striker to improve a midfielder, or am I better with a heavy-hitting front-line?

    My midfield is terrible

Yaya Toure, Sessegnon, Osman, Moses, Dyer

Got a free transfer and 3.5 to upgrade. Will probably wait until internationals but looking for some ideas now. I take it Osman is worth keeping still due to Evertons fixtures? Being as i now i have Dzeko up front, Yaya looks like the obvious to trade out.

Personally, I would shift Sessegnon, Moses and Dyer for proven performers. I would also trde down a defender or a forward to improve the spend. Get Jarvis, Brunt and whoever else you fancy, providing they have scored at least 4 goals and 4 assists in a season ... personally, I like Thomas of WBA ...

What are thoughts on the nasi silva situation? I've played my wildcard so was hoping silva would go up again before nasri rose meaning I could shift silva out for a profit then get nasri and him then go up making a decent profit.

I think with Drogba out and Torres being Torres and Chelsea generally not producing the goods that he has a decent chance. I think he'll come on as a sub for Torres after 50-60 minutes next gameweek or two and if he produces the goods could start getting starts

Anyone still having problems with their leagues? We have one guy in ours who has been in limbo since joining in GW2. It still says he will be added after the next points update yada yada but he's still there. Contacting the powers that be is a waste of time. This game has been an absolute shambles this year.

Glad I played my wildcard now. With the very slow price updates and the obvious knee jerk reactions, I'm up to 101.2 value this morning, and just done some tranfers to get a further boost.

If a few of them go up by 0.2 then I'll be laughing. Then sell them back to put my team in a better shape. I've currently got Rooney, dzecko, Suarez, young, silva, nasri. Half tempted to keep them all tho, but fancy getting back in for next match.

          Yeah, I'm aware of that.

But with a 2 week break im gambling on a few 0.2 price rises. If it doesn't work then don't lose anything.

My only problem is I'm now quite liking this team 😀

Dzecko,Nasri will not perform always. Young would provide the extra bit by set peice free kick or assist. Rooney is a gem and he proved it by 2 free kicks in opposite goal.

My team doesnt have Dzecko, Nasri, Young but I have Rooney and Silva.
IMO Bent would be better than Dzeko and for long term he would provide me with lot of points.

No wild card and no transfers for coming GW. Lets see what happens.

In coming GW5 I would like to see where I stand and decide. Maybe buy V Persie ( with better Fixtures) and A Young ( as he is class apart )

      My team is :
      Vorm Rudd ( suspended)
      Richards, Johnson, Figueroa, Bosingwa, Simpson
Adam, Silva, Brunt, Jarvis , Walcott
      Bent, Adam Johnson, Rooney

So Aguero gets his owners 6 points away from home against tough opposition, therefore 50,000 get rid of him. I think there are some unrealistic expectations going on out there somewhere.
I put my players in for the medium term, with mainly decent fixtures, and a few cheaper make-weight options. The odd 4pt hit is not unacceptable.
Apart from value, why is everyone going mad?

This is why it's a good time to play the WC! There are a lot of fickle people out there, and as the season goes on there will be progressively fewer and fewer of them furiously kneejerking.

I'm not too bothered about price changes (though obviously I am trying to maximise it) but with the way fixtures change in GW4, and with me having had no Man U players, this really seems like the right time to play it in my situation.

I just have to swallow it for a week or two, and they have some difficult defences next three (fingers crossed) I will not kneejerk, I will not kneejerk, I will no.....which is the WC button? 🙂

Not a clue, ILF. It's not unreasonable to use this week's 2 free transfers to bring in Dzeko and Nasri for some price rise action, but to WC so soon?! I don't get it.
