Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

Here we go. Once again I'm at a juncture when my only concern is a lack of Suarez, but I do not want to load up on three big strikers. Long term I can see myself getting him in maybe even for Dzeko, but not for a couple of weeks.

    Given (Vorm)

    Bosingwa - Enrique - Brown - Simpson - N. Taylor

    Lampard - Nasri - Walcott - Dyer - Brunt

    Rooney - Dzeko - Fletcher

One player can't hurt me that much...right? Admittedly one with 45% ownership, but I can see that dropping along with his price if he has a quiet couple of weeks. If he doesn't though he may soon be out of reach.

I am going to hold off on getting Suarez for a while too but watching that Bolton game after Torres failed was a painful experience...

Still can't endorse Lumpard in anybody's team even after the weekend.....

Heh...I want a Chelsea forward and I'm not sure I'm confident enough in any of the others to start regularly. I could downgrade him to Mata but I have no idea what I'd do with the money, don't really want any more invested in defence.

Dump Frank. I've had him the last couple of weeks and will still be selling before next gameweek. I can justify having him for back-to-back home games like he just had but not for much else.

Not sure who controls the TalkSportDrive twitter account but they were going on about how City were now better than Barcelona. Have a feeling they were fishing but they did Tweet about it a couple of times.

Of course, City look really good at the moment, but they are not Barca, no-one is.

Indeed. These were 2 of the Tweets earlier

I've sky+d Barca watch it later. Sounds impressive but predictable hysteria. As good as 5-1 win away to ChmpsLge QFinalists? #notquiteCity

People laughing about my belief that City are #betterthanBarca but tell me what do Barca do that City didn't do yesterday??

Ridiculous to say that. Like you say, they've won the F.A Cup. Sure they have a great chance of winning more this season but to say they are better than Barcelona is extremely stupid!

Here we go. My knee is jerking alarmingly.

Have already brought in Dzeko for Torres (relatively reasonable move I think). I'm now twitching over doing Sessegnon to Young with my other free. It's one of those 'if I don't do it now I won't be able to afford it' situations, so can't wait til after the internationals, it's now or never.

Here's how my front 8 looks:

    Silva // N'Zogbia // Brunt // Sessegnon (Young?) // Moses

    Rooney // Dzeko // Suarez

Any feedback would be extremely appreciated.

Strongly tempted to wildcard – my team is an absolute pieces and I’m massively trailing in both mini leagues.

    Currently got a team of:

    Given, Vorm
De Laet, Enrique, Cashley, Kompany, Woodgate
    Silva, Arteta, Sinclair, Taarabt, Moses
    Torres, Aguero, Long

With the wildcard I can get:

    Given, Vorm
De Laet, Bosingwa, Enrique, Shawcross, R Taylor
    Walcott, Mata, Silva, Dyer, Young
    Suarez, Dzeko, Long

Thoughts? Am I being too kneejerk-y?

    Any help much appreciated.

If I wildcard I'll also probably get in all the likely risers between now and the deadline. But the team above is the team I'd probably settle on.

Evening all. I've decided not to WC, even after my dreadful start (144pts). Unfortunately my two free transfers have been used to avoid price drops (Torres/Surman OUT..Suarez/Dyer IN).
If I get one or two injuries during international break...so be it.

My original plan was to WC during international break after GW7 or more likely, GW11.

I understand why a lot of you are WCing and good luck to all.

I don't think so. He needs first 45k exact transfers in order to not loose any and then another 90k NTI. Ask yourself again. Is that possible?

Probably not. I have 12m to find a mid who will rise by 0.2. Already have Nasri, Anderson, Jarvis, Young. Any suggestions?

Not likely but Adam should be your best choice. 30k transfers in today, third highest scoring mid, good last gameweek.

If you had this forward line and 2.5 million to spend, where would you throw it?

    Nasri - Mata - Walcott - Brunt - Dyer

    Rooney - Dzeko - Fletcher

(Trying to see what I'd do if I switched Lamps for Mata)

Probably Nasri for me. Mata's still a bit of an unknown really (Nasri less so, having already played in the Prem).

I still think Walcott's a good shout, though. Probably getting him in myself.

What do you think is the likelihood that Senderos will be back in the Fulham first XI?

Thinking about a 4pt hit for Senderos -> Ward.

No way is that worth a hit. First of all looking at your team you could easily start Enrique, Kompany and Bosingwa over Senderos this week, maybe even Simpson. For it to be worth it Wolves would have to keep a clean sheet against Spurs, which is not easy, and furthermore any of the guys on your bench have to not keep a clean sheet as well.

Senderos may not come back into the side, but he also could, and it's at least worth seeing how it plays out rather than doing a 4 pointer for so little reason.

Wouldn't take a hit for that. Let your bench handle it for now and get to it when you can.

I'm starting him and if he doesn't play I have Taylor S on the bench - 50/50 chance of him starting IMO, in last couple of games Fulham have conceded goals when he's been in and also when he's been out.

Thanks guys. You're all absolutely right.

That was very much a rash reaction after spending 5 minutes looking throught the expected price changes on totalfpl.

It's very easy sometimes to find yourself getting caught up in the price-changes over the points (look at all the wildcards next week).

No, I don't have NZog. I have Bent and I'm sticking with him til GW8 probably. I don't buy into all this "Villa don't attack theory". They will def get a few wins on the board with their fixtures over the next 4 weeks...Bent and Nzog will be involved IMO

Yes, N'Zogbia and Villa in general aren't looking like great attacking options this year, similar to how Birmingham under McCleish was last season - think someone said that they've had the least number of shots in the league this season. I think I may regret keeping Bent even though it's just been one game since he last scored.

Yes. Nzog was a good option last year only because he was the main man for Wigan and was cheap. This year he's not the most important player in the team and he's more expensive. All the value is gone IMO

Anyone with a WC going for both RVP and Rooney? Suddenly struck me if I get rid of Lamps I could have:

    Nasri - Walcott - Taarabt - Brunt - Dyer
    Rooney - RVP - Dzeko

Not convinced RVP is worth it long term but he could well be for the next few weeks.
