Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

nheres a good one. Out of arsenals last 17 transfers in, only one had premiership experience. am i correct in thinking that was obertans prettier brother silvestre? shocking policy by wenger? only time he buys home bred players is when they are either just out of nappies or doing ok in the championship. he needs to accept responsibility.

Given that they seem to be running the game on two networked Spectrum 48ks I'm sure this wouldnt be possible, but does anyone think it would be a good idea if your subs could come on if one of your first 11 doesnt play the full game?

eg say a player goes off injured after 60 minutes, then you also get the points that your first sub earns in his last 30 minutes?

last year i suggested an 'in play feature' where you could sub off a player during a game if you feel someone on your bench is liable to outscore them. I was duly mocked but I maintain the idea would be a fun feature but wouldn't suit everyone.

I think it is ok the way it is. as we have seen with the BP system this season, change is rarely good!

FPL just keeps giving this year. The lack of price rises are nailing WC users, as all the excess moves are sucked up and wasted. Same on the slow boat for falls as well. Kind of a bad scenario for early WC users. Is it just different this year?

I know that the FISO and Total sites are doing much better this year with better forecasts, seems like last year it took a full four weeks to get any handle on it.

That's to be expected, if they don't drop tonight it means they reset prices or something, or that rises and falls are not automatic and there is actually thought put into it, which I don't like, subjective price rises and falls, grrr.

Well, to the early WC user, I say "to each his own". But three weeks and three WC's is quite a statement. Not meant to offend anyone, it's just a different strategy.

Yup, here 2 and a half months now, bit of a change from Cork, Ireland, it feels odd to be classed as a USA player! This is my first time WC'ing so early, I thought I would try and catch the early rises, if Dzeko and some others had risen last night we would be a good way to a second rise, as it stands, I fear not much money will be made with transfers tailing off midweek.

i would disagree with argument cheapy midfield arent doing well. It all depends on who you brought in, jarvis, brunt and petrov have done considering they only around 6m.

I guess too many people have gone down the punt route with moses, ssesgon and sinclair who all have yet to prove it over the whole season.

i had jarvis and sinclair (one of each to spread the risk) at start and would have been happy if i still had them.

For everyone hoping for an Arsenal turnaround when this nice(ish) string of games come up, average goals scored per game in their last 16 EPL games is only 1.25. And they're playing worse now than they were in the second half of last season.

Unless quality players come in I dont see them getting out the rut much at all, and at the same time I rarely, if ever see the two Manchester sides not scoring at least one in every game they play

I am cramming with Man U, Man City and Liverpool unless something major happens

Collated news from the Anglo-German transfer salt mine of bitter tears:

    1) Mario Götze is not joining Arsenal or anyone else. According to his agent Volker Struth: "Mario will stay at Dortmund, for sure, the next two years. There is no chance of him going to another club this window. This is because he is so young and it is too early in his career for him. The club, the player and his family, we are all of one mind that it is better for him to stay there because he is happy at Dortmund." A non-story.

    2) Sunderland are about to launch a £14 million bid for Freiburg's Senegalese striker Papiss Demba Cissé. Cissé is a major talent - he was the top goalscorer in the Bundesliga last season with an unfashionable club and already has four this season. Other clubs (Fulham included) have refused to meet Freiburg's non-negotiable €15 transfer deal, but Sunderland would face competition from Rubin Kazan (where Cissé is unwilling to move), VfL Wolfsburg, Atletico Madrid (unlikely) and an unnamed French team.

    3) Bosnian striker Vedad Ibišević is not joining Blackburn in a €6 million euro deal. According to Hoffenheim's general manager Ernst Tanner, "They didn't want to fulfil our conditions and there was also a certain risk that Vedad is injured." I'm amazed that they were even thinking about it - Ibišević's muscle bundle tear has kept him out of all of this season's Bundesliga matches, and he would never have passed a medical.

Better to get one of the others you mentioned. Having 3 expensive City attacking players will backfire when they have tough fixtures or struggle for form.

Personally I would say Adam. He is going to get so many assits from corners, a fair few goals both from open play and free kick duties, and he gets so much of the ball and is such a good passer that he should get fairly regular bonus pts (although look like maybe only 1s and 2s the way this new system is)

And he's £0.5m less than Nasri and Mata

I have two free transfers. Two options I'm considering:

    Senderos/J Evans -> Shawcross/De Laet.
    Aguero/Dempsey -> Dzeko/Young.

Seems like the sensible option is to clean up defence, since Aguero and Dempsey are perfectly serviceable. But should I take advantage of the price changes and change my forward/mid?

A tentative word of warning for the Dzeko bandwagon.

Man City play wigan next, they then have a champions league match against napoli followed by a trip0to fulham.
Dzeko wont figure against Wigan more than likely as out of the 4 strikers , he is the only 1 that will be heavily involved in euro 2012 qualifiers or competitive internationals.

BOSNIA are pushing for a runners up place and expect Dzeko to play 180 minutes. His next game could then be Napoli, meaning he could also not play 90 mins against fulham.

I could be proved wrong but its something to ponder?

        definitely dont drop aguero

Well for the first , you can wait ten days to make. Maybe DeLaet is climbing but other possibilities for him.
The second-- good for the price rise, but Aguero and Dzeko are a matched set IMHO with a Tevez asterisk. Young over Dempsey, so far. Not helpful, but that's my take.

I'm not keen to drop Aguero, honestly, which is part of my hesitation for that shuffle. Another option would be to upgrade from Dempsey (deep concerns regarding him) to Adam, and drop one of the troublesome 4.5 defence in favour of a 4.0 that's putting up numbers. I just don't want to weaken my back line too severely. Decisions, decisions.

I just reread that article. I think it wasnt a bad few choices. United one is clearly erroneous but it was made before the Spurs game and with the longterm in hand so it was urging caution rather than anything else.

I only trust my own instincts in this game as its hard enough making a mistake than having someone make it for you.
