Technical Area

The Technical Area- Ramsey vs Spurs

With Cesc Fabregas spirited away by Barcelona after seasons of endless speculation, many had assumed the late August deadline-day swoop for Mikel Arteta would see the Spaniard take on the playmaker mantle in light of his compatriot’s departure.

A series of injuries and suspensions, however, has decimated the Arsenal midfield so far and as yet, Arsene Wenger’s intentions for the former Everton man remain unclear. An ankle injury to Jack Wilshere has been a significant blow for Wenger. The youngster has failed to play a single minute of the season so far and faces months on the sidelines after recent surgery. If Wilshere was fit, it’s conceivable that Arteta could, indeed, play in the role just behind Robin Van Persie but his subsequent absence has meant a more withdrawn midfield role for the Spaniard at present.

With his fair share of set-piece duties and priced at 8.2 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Arteta was on many Fantasy managers’ radars after the Emirates switch but so far, it’s been Aaron Ramsey who Wenger has turned to for the more advanced position. As the weeks have gone by, the Welshman has steadily grown accustomed to his role in the Gunners first-team; playing in every minute of their league season so far. He’s picked up two assists and a goal in his last three games, despite his side’s stuttering performances.

At 6.3 in comparison, Ramsey is currently looking the most likely to produce in the Arsenal midfield and with a total points haul of 30, is bettering Arteta’s score of 25. Ahead of a very favourable run of games that sees them face (SUN, STO, che, WBA, nor, FUL) we analyse both player’s performances in last weekend’s defeat at Spurs:

A look at the players’ average positions at White Hart Lane shows how far forward Ramsey (16) is getting when in possession for Arsenal. His role was a more prominent attacking one compared to the Gunners’ starting wide men Gervinho (27) and Theo Walcott (14), with Arteta (8) pushing on from deep.

The Spaniard made 91 passes in total, with 80 successful and passed to Ramsey 16 times, more than any other team mate. Ramsey made a total of 74 passes with 60 successful- 11 went to Arteta- again, this was the most he made to any team mate. He also grabbed the Gunners equaliser, of course, firing off 2 shots to Arteta’s 1.

If this was purely a tactical dissection of Ramsey’s play, the Welshman is hardly devoid of criticism; he failed to provide any real support for Robin Van Persie, making just 4 successful passes to the Dutchman, for example, and some of his forward balls went astray, leading directly to Spurs attacks.

From a Fantasy perspective, however, he is proving far better “Value” than any other Gunners midfielder and from that angle, his contribution is significant. A look at his passing zones compared to Arteta’s is promising; 35% of Ramsey’s passes in open play were in his opponents’ final third of the pitch, with Arteta managing just 14%. In last season’s equivalent fixture, Cesc Fabregas made 72 passes with 57 successful, with 24% coming in the Spurs final third- again, an encouraging sign for those eyeing up Ramsey as an option.

With both Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero banging in the goals, many Fantasy managers will be reluctant to take a punt on Van Persie, given Arsenal’s dismal recent form. For those looking for alternative Gunners coverage, Ramsey is proving a useful alternative right now- Van Persie comes in at 11.9 in comparison and has accrued just a single Fantasy point more so far this season, despite the 5.6 price difference.

All other things (injuries, to the players and their teammates) being equal, Aguero will probably get more minutes than Sturridge, and he might just be vying for the golden boot too. That being said, I think David Silva is the best player in the league right now. So basically, your question becomes which City player to have? Aguero has had some massive games, but Silva is super consistent: he's only had 1 game below 5 points. Can your remaining strikers put up decent numbers without Kun, and is your midfield anemic? If so, then make the trades. If not, then probably leave it be. I just get a sense that Aguero is going to continue to pay dividends (and, of course, I don't have him), especially if you can captain him on one of those 20-point outings. I think Aguero + [someone other than Brunt in that price range, Petrov, Ramsey, Murphy] has the possibility of scoring more across the season than Sturridge + Silva. The question is who to get in there, or how to jockey to eventually get Silva also.

      Yes.

      With 2 FTs this week:
      1) if you use ONE: you'll have TWO next week
      2) if you use TWO: you'll have ONE next week, but
      3) if you DON'T USE ANY: you'll still have TWO next week (the extra will be forfeit)

    Gentlemen,

With David Luiz back from injury, how do you think his playing time will be?
How's it gona affect Bosingwa & Ivanovic?

I'm guessing it's going to affect Ivanovic moreso than Bosingwa. Although Luiz can play as a winger defender I think he's mostly suited as a full-back.

Should I take a 4pt hit to take out Young for VDV? Bear in mind, in doing so I won't have any Man Utd coverage. My team for this week is below:

    Vorm (Given)
Shawcross, Kompany, Bosingwa (de Laet, Ward)
    Young, Nasri, Ramires, SWP (Arteta)
    Sturridge, Adebayor, Suarez

Another concern - Arteta to play or benched for SWP??

    Please halp!!

I think taking out Aguero is more of a priority than taking out Brunt. Isn't he injured atm? With Balotelli out with a back injury (not sure how serious), I'd reckon Dzeko will be a nailed on starter.. So I'd think about taking out Aguero for Dzeko.

How much money have you got? Because you should be punting Ferguson before Brunt to reduce the risk of falling into this (predictable) position again. And yeah, if you can't field 11 players this week, you'd better be taking a hit to fix things.

Have Bendtner so need to bring in another striker this week in case of midfield rotation (Young, Anderson & maybe even Taarabt) so I have options of 3-5-2 or 3-4-3.

Too risky going for Sturridge or Ba?

Off topic: Going to England 19th - 22nd of november for Watford-Pompey, Chelsea-Pool and Spurs-Villa. Kind of hard getting tickets for the Chelsea game, got offered the following tickets for like 220£ : Executive seats, east stand middle tier, penalty area with complimentary food and drink voucher.

Anyone here know Stamford Bridge well, are the view ok from those seats ?

Yeah, they'll be excellent view-wise. the corporate seats always are. Have never sat in the ones in the East stand, but have in the West. You'll be midway up the stand. Downsides are (a) the price, (b) the atmosphere (or complete lack thereof). Personally much prefer sitting in either the Matthew Harding Lower or the Shed.

Hey guys important feedback needed. What's your take on spreading coverage versus doubling up? I have always been an advocate of spread coverage. This season i'm trying to have a key player from each of the Top6 teams. But this often means making a decision eg Silva or Aguero, Nani or Rooney or VDV vs Adebayor.

I have Nasri Silva and Aguero.

Even if one disappoints, the other backs it up. But this only works for teams that have high scoring game. Otherwise, choosing the in-form and better player and spreading up will be good. Only double up on dependable teams.
