The Digest – Gameweek Twelve

Tottenham bring Gameweek 12 to a close, sparing Aston Villa a spanking but throwing Fantasy managers options from all angles. Elsewhere, a pre-season certainty returned to form in timely fashion, reviving an option that had previously seemed irresistible…

The Player

While Yakubu and Heidar Helguson pulled a brace apiece out of the hat to provide further budget considerations up front, it was Leighton Baines’ points haul that handed Fantasy managers maximum food for thought.

Going into the season, Baines looked nailed-on for our lineups. Five goals and 11 assists last season, following on from 9 in 2009/10, the Everton left-back was delivering the returns of a mid-price midfielder, with the opportunity to throw in the occasional clean sheet. With Mikel Arteta’s departure to the Emirates, Baines was also installed as the Goodison penalty taker – surely a factor that would seal the deal?

Yet Baines’ Fantasy stock gradually fell as the gameweeks passed. Everton’s inability to claim clean sheets, compounded by key injuries and a run of opponents that limited their attacking potential, meant that the former Wigan man’s potential man dried up. Having claimed strong initial ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, we witnessed heavy sales and a price drop from 8.0 to 7.8.

However, the theories thrown around at the start of the season should remain fresh in our minds. We explored matters further in last week’s Monitor article – all the statistical signposts pointed to a turn in fortunes – and so it proved.

Baines, at his best when Everton have some form, is effectively an immensely effective winger with set-piece command and the added potential of clean sheets. For 7.8 that seems a fair deal – when you consider Everton’s fixtures hand them opponents that give them a fair crack of building on Saturday’s win, suddenly his acquisition continues to make sense all over again. The problem now is finding the funds – it all seemed so easy back in August.

The Team

Back in gameweek 10, The Digest sang the praises of Harry Redknapp’s side, emphasising the wealth of attacking talent open to Fantasy managers. Just a couple of gamweeks on and, while Harry’s been under the surgeon’s knife, little has changed in terms of his team’s potential.

Last night’s 2-0 win over a Villa side, who seemingly turned up at White Hart Lane to frustrate and contain, should have been more emphatic. Tottenham’s midfield conjured opportunities, the pace of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon tormented Alex McLeish’s bewildered full-backs, while Emmanuel Adebayor found his scoring touch after a recent drought.

Defensively, Tottenham also look composed. Admittedly, Villa posed little threat but with Ledley King restored to the heart of the back-four, Redknapp’s side were more resolute and showed every indication that, as mid-price defensive assets go, they are worthy of consideration. Full-backs Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Kyle Walker stand out as the key options – two more considerations within a Tottenham squad that remains buoyant and brimming with Fantasy profit.

The Talking Point

Which brings us nicely to the talking point. Gareth Bale’s performance last night took him to 3 assists and 3 goals in his last three gameweeks. Seven bonus points have inevitably followed in a spell that has seen him suddenly emerge as a consistent Fantasy performer.

We spoke at length about his potential in last week’s Monitor article – our Members will have seen plenty of evidence in that article which pre-empted last night’s assist returns. The theory is that Bale is a different animal this season; his form and display last night only added further evidence to support that view.

The issue for Fantasy managers concerns the acquisition of Bale as an alternative to Rafael Van der Vaart. There can be no question that the Dutchman is a prime Fantasy asset – a playmaker who commands set-pieces and penalties, and a player who has scored 19 goals in the last year – a total bettered only by Robin Van Persie and Darren Bent.

Van der Vaart has drawn blanks in his last two outings, however, and, last night’s withdrawal on 68 minutes was the second consecutive game in which he’s been hauled off with over 20 minutes on the clock – the fourth time in six gameweeks.

With Jermain Defoe straining at the leash, this tactic of Redknapp’s seems set to continue, meaning that Van der Vaart will need to damage opponents and return Fantasy points in just over an hour per game. Bale, in comparison, is unquestionably a 90-minute man and looks immune to rest and rotation. With Cameroon failing to qualify for the African Cup of Nations, there’s also little chance that Bale will be forced to shift to left-back to cover for the loss of Assou-Ekotto, as he was on occasions last time round.

There’s a simple solution to the conundrum – draft in both Van der Vaart and Bale. This may jar at first but, had the Dutchman been classified as a forward, you could argue it would be a solution adopted without too much thought.

As it stands, Tottenham continue to have a run of favourable fixtures in front of them – a run that suggests that the wins and goals will go on flowing. Aside from David Silva and perhaps Frank Lampard, you can argue that there are currently few, if any midfielders, who offer the scoring potential of the Tottenham pair going into the New Year.

The Van der Vaart/Bale pairing is a Fantasy basket that appears to cradle all our eggs rather nicely.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Team this week:

    Vorm
    Kompany Brown Jones
    Silva VDV Bale Ramsey
    Balo RVP Klasnic

    1 Freebie and lots of wonga in the bank...

    I can't see Balotelli starting vs. Liverpool even if Dzeko was utter shite yesterday. Can't see City keeping many cleanies in the next 4 either so I'm planning to get rid of Kompany as well.

    Should I do:

    A. Balotelli -> Bendtner
    B. Kompany -> Baines
    C. Both

      I've done Kompany > Baines. Citeh aren't keeping many cleanies and have a tough run of games. Everton meanwhile have a good run of games an traditionally start to come good this time of year.

      Balo > Bendy is a tough call, depends really on whether you are confident enough in your subs to cover Balo if he doesn't play.

    Folks, give me few advices how to settle my defence; the more I think, the less I know.

    Vorm (Krul)
    N.Taylor / ShawX / Company / S.Taylor / Simpson

    Would need some points in a next weeks and also to fix my doubled NEW.

      Less is usually more when it comes to FPL tinkering... 🙂

      You could transform Kompany into Evra or Jones. Jones is a slight rota-risk with Smalling returning though.

      You've largely got away with all those transfers - they must have been some decent choices - and your team value has shot up accordingly. You're in with a great shout @ 60k in the world after all that. Time to stop and become more conservative. Stop taking points hits. Your luck WILL run out.

        Turbodog speaks the truth. Pace yourself NUG. I did around 90 transfers two seasons ago (first season) and couldn't get higher than top 30k. Last season I did around 60 and ended up in top200, but I admit I was pretty jammy in the process. This season I'm trying to cut down the transfers even further. It's all about long term planning and sticking to your plans.. especially when it comes to your cheaper players that you rotate. More expensive players, like strikers, you can pick on a shorter term basis.

      Rooney to Hernandez would he what I'd do if I was a Rooney owner. He's more reliable goal scoring wise at the moment and also think he'll get more starts. He was rested last night after all. He's also the kind of player that can score as a sub. Another factor that appeals is that his shots off target is low...that way he is more likely to get bonus when he scores. Get Rooney back when he starts performing. Even if you miss one week of a rooney rout, with hernandez you are likely to reap rewards anyway....where there's a rooney assist there's an hernandez goal.

              Hernandez - one goal a game....with 3 bonus likely = 9pt
              Rooney/Suarez - no goals a game, with no bonus, 2pt
              Moses - no goals a game and no bonus, 2pt.

              Hmm...I'm not sure I follow your argument. Are you saying that getting a player in that is more likely to score 9pt every match is the same as getting Moses in.

              Also, If say Man Utd, who you must remember are actually quite a good side and improve massively in winter, start scoring more than one goal...who will be getting that...or assisting that.

              In conclusion - you have been sussed my son.

                Chico has done remarkably well for a player who does not always start and plays in a low scoring team courtesy of the odd goal and lots of bonus points With a decent run of fixtures he is the only MU mid/attacker I would think of buying. (Got Nani but thinking of going to Silva or Bale).

                While SAF is playing so defensively I think there are better options in higher scoring teams.

                This year seems to be one where cheap forwards offer better value to get more captain options in imo

    With City having to win in their final group game, would you agree it's quite likely that Aguero will start the NORWICH game on the bench?

    With Liverpool to come before and Chelsea ARSENAL to follow, I'm thinking Aguero isn't near the best forward to have for the next 4 games and GW17 a much better option.

    Nani to Bale is just plain silly IMO.

    One winger to another... everyone playing this game is aware that wingers usually go on a run & then have hibernate for periods... Nani might just the purple patch soon & Bale has reached his peak (only going downwards from here).

          I accept that Nani could erupt into form at any moment..but his recent returns have been poor (he could easily have lost the only assist he has had recently) and surely there is a doubt over him starting on Sat after starting both matches so far this week?

    Morning all.
    Team for the week:
    Vorm
    Baines, Brown, Kompany
    VDV, Silva, Ramsey, Drenthe
    RVP, Adebayor, Sturridge
    (Kenny, Dyer, Ward, Simpson)
    1.7 in the bank, 1 FT.

    I'd like United defensive cover however I'm fairly sure that Jones will be rested this weekend with Rafael/Smalling back in the fold. Could also go with Bale for Ramsey but feel like tripling up on Spurs is madness. So my choices are.

    A) Kompany > Vidic
    B) Ward > Jones
    C) Ramsey> Bale

      A tough one... I think both Vidic and Baines would be overinvestment in Def, and I share your concerns about Jones/Bale - I'm in the same situation myself.

      If those are your 3 options I would save the FT till next week. A couple of other ideas would be to updgrade Dyer (Sinclair/Drenthe/Walters/Sess) or go Ward > Jags.

    Right, let's just clarify, if Rooney doesn't start I'm fielding a bad team:

    Vorm
    Naylor ShawX Jones
    VDV Yaya Walters Hoolahan*
    RVP(c) Sturridge Rooney*

    Hennessey Tierney* Bannan* Simpson

    3.4 in the bank 0 FT

    *= doubt or sh*t 😛

      I gave it two weeks before you'd want Hernandez over Rooney - should have bookmarked it and placed a bet 😉

          Hehe.
          In all fairness though, it isnt a shit team - look at your damn ranking.
          All 4 of your defenders are high chance of a clean sheet.
          Yaya/Walters has been very good lately, VDV is 'due'
          I'd fancy Sturridge to score this week.
          Plus, you have RVP (c) so all will be fine 🙂

            Did you watch our game last night? Conceded 2 stupid goals, but we showed signs of returning to attacking form I think, Ashley Young (although a bit wasteful a long with our bad passing in the first half) seems to have livened things up! We got in much better positions and showed more signs of being a team again. I'd be very worried if I were Newcastle, who just came to Manchester and lost, they're due for a whole weekend of déjà vu 🙂

    Hey Guys

    Current Team:

    Vorm/Krul

    Woodgate/Simpson/Kompany/Jones/Enrique

    Moses/Ramsey/Silva/Nani/VDV

    Adebayor/RVP/Graham

    0.9 in Bank

    Having already done Suarez -> Adebayor, I have one free transfer left this GW. What do you reckon about the following:

    A: Moses -> Rodwell
    Ramsey -> Larsson

    B: Moses -> Drenthe
    Ramsey -> Sessegnon

    Both for 4 point hit.

    Or should I just do Ramsey -> Sess/Larsson this week for free and play 3-4-3, then bring in Drenthe/Rodwell next GW?

    Cheers!

    Suarez > Adebayor, or give Suarez the home game to City and maybe do the transfer next week instead (Ade vs BOLTON)?

    If I did it this week, GW13:

    Vorm (Krul)
    Kompany Jones Brown
    Drenthe VDV Silva Walters
    RVP Sturridge Adebayor

    S: Dyer Simpson Ward

      It's a tough choice KC, as Liverpool's fixtures easen considerably after this weeks game. I think you'd be better off long term with Adebayoor, but remember that he's pretty inconsistent and got two jammy goals this weekend.

      No to swapping them, and Nani had his best game for a while last night, and got an assist, Young's return has helped him out I'd keep him in. As for Jones, I have him, but with Smalling back and Rafa nearly back he's no longer a nailed on starter in my view, and the other 2 offer a cheaper route in to the United defence, but they're no more guaranteed to play than Jones is. Only nailed on defensive started for United is Vidic (and maybe Evra)

        Thanks for the advice. Its a difficult one. Think ill resist moving for Bale and give Nani a final chance - though i feel like i keep saying this!! I will bring in Jones, he is going to play more than Bosingwa so i will bring him in a re-evaluate when we know more on the smalling/Rafa situation.

    Think I'm going to give to Rooney one more week after which him for Hernandez allowing Ward > Richards will become very tempting.

    Back when I WC'd I thought I was mad for doing Rooney > Chicha to allow me to get RVP. Worked out brilliantly, just wish I'd kept faith in Hernandez and not panicked xD
