The Numbers Game – Opportunity Knocks

Fantasy managers are always looking out for any indicators of a player’s future success. Some, like increased game time or a team’s new attacking philosophy make total sense. Others such as a player’s performance in a single Gameweek or past success against any given opponent are a bit of a stretch. The final category is filled with hunches, feelings and long shots, often fuelled by adult beverages, and usually leading to ill-advised Friday night transfer binges.

One way of predicting goals is to look at the amount of opportunities a player is receiving, and what he’s doing with them. For anyone who has even casually glanced at a game of football (never mind hardened Fantasy managers like yourself), that sounds obvious but it’s a factor which is consistently ignored in favour of ‘form’ and the fact a player had a ‘big’ game the previous week, even if his lone goal came about somewhat fortuitously.

Taking last year‘s data (for forwards only), we see a correlation of around 88% when comparing total shots to goals scored (excluding penalties) and 90% when comparing only shots on target. This can be used as a predictive tool as players who are getting chances, but not putting them away will, on average, start to improve over time assuming they continue to receive the same opportunities in the future.

There are two careful, and important, distinctions to be made though.

So here is the mighty WC team

    Mignolet Sorenson
    Simpson Evans Kelly Shotton Cauker
    Valencia Silva BArfa McClean Bale
    Rooney Torres Van Persie

Fairly sure im happy with this but will miss Kompany. Torres of course a risk but he has surely got to turn it on now

    What are your thoughts?

The 'Dolly Parton' squad formation worked in the Henry/Van Nistelrroy era - times have moved on since (mainly as the top strikers' prices have risen). Not sure it's a good tactic any nore.

Main reason is that the team elsewhere has to be weak to accommodate the main strikers. Not denying that you need one top striker as a captain choice, but 3 is overkill. You don't get great value for money for strikers - so in order to get a good return on your investment (and it's a good portion of your budget that you are spending here) then they need to keep racking up the big scores. Just as an exercise, try downgrading Rooney for Morison or Graham and see what you can do to your defence with the spare cash - not saying you should load up on defence as that also has it's risks - but it'll give you a good idea.

I hear you, although I can potentially get 2 clean sheet over the next couple of weeks with those players. If torres doesnt perform then I can downgrade and upgrade back to kompany upon his return. Thats how I see it. Regarding Torres, the man must be so dying to destroy one of these games

Jones emerged as the latest doubt and made it 3 doubtful and 1 banned in total for me now.

    Krul
    Simpson - Jones(?) - Enrique - BAE
    Nani - Bale - Silva(?)
    Ade - RvP - Yakubu

Sub: Vorm ; Dyer, Osman(?), Kompany(banned)

Quite easy to have man down to field 11 players, so considering again.

any of this change worth 4 pts hit.
    a) Osman > Valencia
    b) Osman > Ramires
    c) Osman > A.Johnson
    d) Kompany > Richards

Probably both likely to start with Evans sat on the bench last week. Like Granville says on the podcast, the problem with having Baines in your side, is that you have to play him each week.

    WC options,
    1) Senderos or Kelly or Santon? (Do Newcastle have good fixtures)
    2) Moses or Ben Arfa (whoever I pick will be mostly benched)

I like the starting XI, but Hilario and A. Ferdinand are two players I'd stay away from, especially Hilario.

My midfield with the exception of Moses (I might go McClean) on the bench could end being the same, also I'm thinking of going with the same forwards, but debating whether to go with Yakubu or Strurridge. But I'm sticking with my team for one more week and unleashing the wildcard next week.
