The Watchlist – Adel Taarabt

Filed under: The Watchlist - Posted by: stilicho

The enigmatic architect of QPR’s euphoric promotion campaign, Adel Taarabt’s haul of 19 goals and 16 assists last season marked him out as the prime Fantasy Premier League (FPL) target from this term’s graduate teams. Undoubtedly skilful, the reproaches of selfishness and defensive negligence torpedoed his two top-flight seasons with Spurs but, with a starting berth for the Hoops seemingly assured, many backed the Moroccan magician to silence the doubters and light up the league.

Though initially priced at a thought-provoking 6.5, a lacklustre start to the campaign saw Taarabt’s investors running for cover long before his transport-themed fall from grace under Neil Warnock hit the back pages. Banished to the bench in November and assuming the role of bit-part player under the old regime, the Moroccan –with no goals or assists to his name- has even made Victor Moses seem particularly prolific this term.

Returning from the African Cup of Nations last weekend, Taarabt was immediately installed to the first-team by Mark Hughes. Partnering Shaun Wright-Phillips on the flanks against Wolves in an aggressive 4-4-2, he emerged with great credit from a threatening display by a ten-man QPR. His new manager was clearly delighted with the Moroccan’s contribution and, having pulled Taarabt out of his hat, Hughes appears little inclined to employ him as a bench-warmer over a run of games (bla FUL EVE bol) that should provide ample opportunity for attacking returns.

New acquisitions Bobby Zamora and Djibril Cisse have already made their mark in a QPR side that suffered earlier in the season from a glut of creators and a dearth of reliable finishers, and Taarabt looks set to benefit from having a more clinical outlet for his technical wizardry. With his price down to 5.8, Taarabt is now in direct competition with Joey Barton (5.8) and Shaun Wright-Phillips (5.9) for those looking to invest in QPR’s midfield over this favourable run.

Barton’s holding role may put him at a disadvantage from an FPL perspective in a setup that promises attack from the flanks, and with Taarabt presumably restored to direct free kicks, Barton’s potential looks more limited under the new regime. With two assists in his last four games, Wright-Phillips is doing his best to dispel his customary aura of frenetic impotence, but whilst Taarabt never looks far away from conjuring up a piece of magic, Wright-Phillips never looks far away from falling over his own feet.

With the wildcard window a homogenising influence on our squads, picking the right differentials has never been more important, and, with just 3% ownership, the new dawn at Loftus Road may well prove beneficial for this summer’s forgotten FPL favourite.

Do you have Sess is the big question? If you do then buying Siggs would be the obvious choice. If you dont then McClean looks like a solid investment as Sunderland are the most in-form team in the prem and McClean plays a big part in that.

REPOST from bottom of last page

I have 3.8M in the bank and am having a tough time spending it (wish my wife had the same attitude). My initial plan was to “wait and see” what the next few game weeks and then have the flexibility in the upcoming weeks. ie. United in GW28 onwards or DGW etc.

    My Team

    Mignolet/Sorenson
    Richards/Simpson/Senderos/Naylor/Shotton who will be fixed
    Silva/Demps/Sess/Bale/Moses
    RVP/Ba/Dzeko

Good strategy? Or a waste of 3.8M?

So Jafa, you’re really giving more credit to the MON affect than RVP’s sheer awesomeness?

I mean, granted, that is pretty much an immovable object meeting an unstoppable force, but seriously?

Sunderland weakened from 120 minutes tonight. RVP back on form. Arsenal flying. Penalties to boot.

I like Dempsey and all, but he is far from predictable, and lone striker is actually not at all where he scores best. And no penos!

To be fair, I just meant they were flying in their last game. Sure, they’ve been poor leading up to it, but now theyve unleashed the ox………..theyre flying, now.

Sure, Blackburn was weakened, but hattricks aren’t THAT easy, and he played well. I guess I just have a lot of trouble captaining anyone else when RVP in on form and Arsenal is getting him the ball. (basically meaning Arshavin isn’t starting)

Not a great week for everyones favourite trio of strikers. RVP has maybe the best chances of scoring just because he’s RVP and a goal scoring machine. But Sunderland won’t be pushovers regardless of a 120 minute game played 3 days before.

Aguero has one away goal since GW6 and Dembas up against Spurs at the Lane.

Anyone a little worried of seeing 3x2pters sat at the head of their team?

I’m getting Demba Ba next week and going 3-5-2 this GW so expect him to score for you all at least. RVP and Aguero will draw blanks though :(

I must differ gaff. RVP will be facing a tired, worn down Sunderland side and will have a good shot at scoring.

Aguero is facing a very weak, possibly the weakest defence in the league over the past 4 games. And with Aguero being on pks as well, he will surely score. I see villa getting thumped by 3 or 4 this weekend tbh.

So sorry to counter your argument but I think both Aguero and RVP have very good chances to score this weekend.

Even currently have the armband on Aguero :)

Look back at Villa’s past 4 games… HORRIFIC! Just the worst defence in the league right now. They have also given away pk’s the the likes of manU, chelsea, and arsenal. With aguero again on pk’s and always in the mix for city, his chances of scoring or creating a goal are very high, regardless of his away record.

Remember: you can’t judge a player for his history, just his immediate form and potential in the next week. I find it very hard to believe villa will concede any less than 3 goals this weekend.

Udit, please read again.. you must judge based on potential and not on past results. You and I bot know Aguero has the potential to explode at any point in time, and usually when City win by 3 or more, Aguero is 100% involved in 1(or more) goals. :)

Cheers Gaff, Im assuming you’re backing Capt. America this week?

Seems a decent shout, but what swings me between the two is that Aggers is in PKs and Dempsey is not. It is highly likely that both will be involved if goals come(which I’m sure they will) but the fact that Aston Villa has conceded so many PKs over the course of the season makes Aguero(C) a decent(possibly different) pick this weekend.

Leader of my mini-league doesnt even own Dempsey. A brace or something from him could just be the ticket to catching him

Hoping/half-expecting a quiet week for those so am going different than them (Dempsey) this week and hope it pays off. But Aguero/RVP are such quality players they can score against anyone and kill my chances.

facing a defensive dilemma this weekend:

    current setup is:

    schwarzer (sorensen)
    taiwo/kompany/vermaelen (jevans/senderos)

I know it’s very FFS vogue at the moment but I can’t see past having the super trio (Ag’s,RVP,Ba) in the coming GWs. So I’d personally go with what you got this week and then look at using your 2FTs next week to downgrade in MF and get in Aguero for his sumptuous home fixtures.

Yak could be a nice short term fix on the other hand. Wouldnt argue against him scoring some points, this weekend especially.

Gerrard? Never, Rooney? Naah, Crouch? No.., Lescott? Not this time, Balotelli? Of course, ban him! says:

Still having some tinkering between walters and huth, which one should go this week and which one next week.
If you have some time and a good samaratin feeling, give this a little tought.

    a) I could do Walters => Siggy this week and bench huth. Play Kompany, Senderos, Enrigue in defence. This would mean that I have to bench one of sess/ba to play siggy tough.

    b) Play safer and do Huth => Evans this week and bench walters. Play Evans instead of Enrigue in defence.
This would mean I could do for example Linde to Krul next week, altough I have sorensen so I’m quite happy to play him gw26 + 27…
Also could take walters out then, despite of his two home games – I think I don’t want to bench anyone of dempsey, silva, bale, sess, rvp, aguero, ba (gw26+27).

I’m thinking a) atm, but hate to see walters losing value, maybe that’s not so much of a issue anymore this season.

    Team is

    Sorensen (Linde)
Kompany / Senderos / Enrigue (Simpson, Huth)
Silva / Bale / Dempsey / Sess (Walters)
    Rvp / Aguero / Ba

    cheers!

I have the same front 8 as you, with the exception of Dzeko instead of Aguero and I’m keeping Walters as bench fodder this week and swapping next week, otherwise I’ve got a headache who to bench.

I’d transfer out Huth this week, especially as we dont know yet if Enrique is going to play.

      b. liverpool wont keep a CS, enrique health is uncertain right now anyway. walters situation stinks but at least you know he’s the one to bench rather than benching someone with more potential. your 3 starting defenders now consist of 2 that didnt play last game due to injury and another that got subbed off due to injury, should one of those 3 not play, you will want evans.

thanks guys, and no matter what I wrote, I’m currently thinking BBB) too – for reasons that fuzzy mentioned!
I just hope my luck with united defence don’t go on and on if I take evans in.

Took lindy – injured before I even played him.
Took evans & jones – injured in first game if I remember correctly.

Doing A would give you too much of a selection headache. One reason I chose to hold off on Ba so I didnt have the problem. Morison fits snugly on my bench as does Walters.

I’d sort your DF out. But the trouble is there are not really any great DFers I’d want in that price range until Evans in GW28. In your b) think you might just be transferring in a 2pter and playing him over a 1/2pter in Enrique (if fit).

Pool will score against Utd and We will score (hopefully more) against them.

Could try a massive punt on Cahill or Bosingwa that will possibly carry you through to GW28 and Evans transfer

Yes, I was thinking Cahill, but too much of risk there for me now.
I can play evans next week too and like you mentioned, I want him for gw28 anyway, so maybe it’s good to use this transfer now.

the only one overdue to explode, with the fixture to match his form, is Aguero. I’ve had him for 6 weeks & this week i think it’s time he earned his crust
