Scout Notes- Gameweek Twenty Six- Sunday

Theo Walcott is at the double at Arsenal come back to hammer Spurs. Emmanuel Adebayor gets amongst the Fantasy points again. Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs roll back the years as United steal a late win at Norwich, Grant Holt grabs another goal for the Canaries, while Tony Pulis installs Asmir Begovic back in goal as Stoke see off Swansea at the Britannia:

Emmanuel Adebayor
Spurs’ on loan forward maintained his recent run of form in yesterday’s blistering north London derby. Adebayor was once again partnered by Louis Saha and provided an assist for the Frenchman to open the scoring at the Emirates, before netting Spurs’ second from the spot in the 5-2 defeat. He has now picked up 12 assists this term, second only to David Silva, and a nine point return took Adebayor to 142 points, just a couple behind Wayne Rooney. With Spurs hosting United before facing tricky trip to Everton and Chelsea, immediate investment may not be huge, though with a turn in fixtures from Gameweek 31 onwards, Adebayor has the potential to rack up the points in the final quarter of the season.

Bacary Sagna
Having sustained a broken ankle in the first north London derby back in Gameweek 7, the Arsenal right-back exacted revenge as he helped spark a remarkable comeback. Sagna –who had been out for 15 gameweeks with the injury before returning earlier this month- grabbed the home side’s first and also provided an assist as Arsenal turned over their rivals in emphatic fashion. Perhaps surprisingly, this was the first time this term Sagna has produced attacking returns but, with the Gunners chalking up just two clean sheets in their last ten, investment in their back line continues to look a risk.

Theo Walcott
Despite plenty calls for his exclusion, Walcott maintained his place in the starting XI, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain dropped from the previous league game at Sunderland. The winger answered his critics in style, grabbing a brace and returning double figures for the second home match in succession. Walcott is now on 117 points, three more than Juan Mata and only nine less than the likes of Nani; priced at 8.8, he’s proving to be better value than perhaps anticipated and, with less than 4% ownership, is clearly an over-looked differential.

Robin Van Persie
The Gunners skipper was only fourth in this week’s Captain Poll, with a mere 5% of the votes ahead of the visit of Spurs. Arsenal’s defeats away to Sunderland and Milan clearly had an effect, with nearly 33,000 Fantasy managers transferring Van Persie out in Gameweek 26, but he demonstrated once again just why it’s folly to write him off, with a goal and assist in the 5-2 triumph. He now sits on 193 points, nearly 40 ahead of nearest rival Gareth Bale, and is well on course to hammering last season’s top score of 198 by Nani.

Ryan Giggs
A last-minute winner at Norwich provided the fairy-tale ending for the Welshman’s 900th appearance for United. Afforded another role on the left, with Ashley Young benched, Giggs continued a strong run of consistency which has now seen him produce attacking returns in each of his last five appearances for the champions. With Paul Scholes vindicating his return from retirement with his second goal in six matches, it’s clear the experienced hands are stepping up in performance for Sir Alex Ferguson in the crucial final third of the season. Giggs has now played 90 minutes in four of United’s last five, though with Antonio Valencia expected back next week, there’s enough of a question mark against his game time to make Fantasy managers think twice about his acquisition.

Nani
Back in domestic action after a three-gameweek absence due to a foot injury, the Portuguese star grabbed an assist for Scholes’ opener- this was his first attacking return since Gameweek 17. Nani’s lack of form, combined with Antonio Valencia’s strong consistency, has seen the former’s price drop from 10.5 to 9.9 in recent weeks but with the champions’ schedule looking outstanding from Gameweek 28 onwards, he has the platform and potential to deliver.

Grant Holt
A goal against United took the Norwich skipper to 98 points, the top-scoring Fantasy player for Paul Lambert’s side. Holt seems to have ousted Steve Morison as the Canaries number-one forward- he’s started the last five, while the Welshman has managed 25 minutes in the last three gameweeks. Holt has also scored against the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle and, with (stk, WIG, WOL, ful) amongst his next five, he looks a decent cut-price (5.0) option over the next month or so.

Asmir Begovic
Having started the Potters’ last fourteen league games, Thomas Sorensen had certainly looked the nailed-on number-one for Tony Pulis’ side. Confident of a home clean sheet, we’d even drafted him into this week’s Scout Picks ahead of the game against Swansea- Stoke duly obliged with a 2-0 win but it was Asmir Begovic who got the nod. Stoke’s Thursday lineup in Valencia was, in retrospect, a sign of a shift in Pulis’ thinking- Sorensen had started in Spain; a clear surprise, given that Begovic tended to be fielded for cup games. The only matter that Pulis’ team sheet clarified yesterday was that, as far as Stoke goalkeepers are concerned, there’s no such thing as a certainty.

Ryan Shotton
Having flickered briefly on Fantasy radars with a run of six starts in seven from Gameweek 14-20, Shotton’s stock had taken a dive after just a single first XI appearance in the subsequent five fixtures. Lining up on the right side of midfield, the 4.0 defender returned to the Stoke starting lineup yesterday and reminded us of his out-of-position potential with an assist for Peter Crouch as Stoke avenged their defeat at the Liberty Stadium earlier in the season. Similar to the likes of Sorensen, though, his lack of assured game time will continue to deter most Fantasy suitors, despite his cut-price potential.

Peter Crouch
Partnered once again by Jon Walters up front, Crouch grabbed a rare home goal as the Potters ended a run of four straight losses. The former Spurs man netted at the Britannia for the first time since Gameweek 13 and, pre-bonus, has now averaged 4.1 points per game, taking him ahead of Walters’ 4.0 in the Stoke rankings. A game against Norwich next weekend looks enticing for Crouch but with Chelsea and City to follow, Stoke’s Fantasy assets don’t look likely to see much immediate investment.

Aha, the elusive JMS. Yes, that 4 point advantage comes in handy, although Chris White would have beaten me anyway even though we only had 3 or 4 players different.

Without giving away all my secrets, I'm definitely not captaining Ba this week. I've not settled on who I'm going for, may even be RVP after yesterday!

Looking forward to another good match up 😉

Time for a Suarez rant: Is he really all that some people make him out to be?

1st up he's only scored six goals and made three assists for the season. The fact he was out for eight games was his own doing (so guilty of wasting his own opportunities), period, so no excuses there. For interest Torres has two goals and four assists and is rightly being slated for it. Suarez has played 350mins more this season.

2nd up Liverpool were playing better more successful football whilst he was suspended.

Did anyone see him in the CC yesterday? The number of extra touches, followed by losing the ball, followed by petulant hissy fit, was a familiar pattern to much of his season. He 's selfish, deluded by his own ability and thoroughly annoying to watch.

I just don't get the Suarez love anymore. I actually reckon he's a massive liability and the only reason he's still picked is the whole mid-guided Anfield support thing.

I really could go on but just realised he's not worth it........

Another GW, another red arrow, please help to save my dreams of a 1st season 100k finish:

2FTs and 0.2m in the bank, with several issues:

    Lindegaard - Sorensen
    Enrique - Evans - Caulker - Senderos - Santon
    Silva - Walters - Dempsey - Sessegnon - Valencia
    RVP - Aguero - Ba

Up front and midfield is ok for now (not priority), so I was thinking Senderos -> Kelly (sideways, but Senderos might not get back in), and then bring in a playing GK.

    Any ideas welcome, thanks.

It was around this time or a little later last year that he made about 4 8 point hits in a row and they were all massively successful. I tell you what, we all try to plan and play this game as carefully as possible, but he, played it the way we all wish we could. Well him and McGurn.

I think a big hit could be a good option for people without a wildcard left..........the fixtures take a swing in a couple of weeks and one big hit to revamp a team could easily pay off, if not the same GW, then definitely long term.

      It's something I'm considering.

I take regular 4 & 8 pt hits and I would honestly say that although they don't always work, most of the time the actualy do for me. The main reason for me is being always able to have in-form players, thus they often repay the hit & more. Also by doing this early on in the season gave me a great team value and over the last few months has let me get expensive luxurys without having to compromise my team, ie having G.Johnson over enrique, having both Mata & Dempsey but only playing 1 per week as I rotate them for their home games. Having the funds to get Baines in a few weeks for caulker without downgrading my team. Like I say it can easily not pay off (for that 1 week) but overall im happy with my strategy as it has worked for me.

I like taking hits but have avoided one for weeks, even months because I thought I was taking too many. Now I realize maybe I wasn't. I think the important thing is that you must have your first choice team each week, taking hits if needed (within reason, maybe 2 max). No point settling for less, you only need one of your gambles to pay off to profit.

Good point. I'd been moving in the right direction but had a set back last couple weeks. Trying to stay patient and feel that GW28 could be the week where the tables turn. Just hope haven't lost too much ground by then.

Two players whose roles and points in the team seem to have changed following January transfers - and who I'm beginning to put question marks by:

    Ba.... and Bale!

Cisse and Nani/Walcott are getting tempting.

I can maybe understand Ba to Cisse, but Spurs get some better fixtures in a few weeks, so Bale is probably worth holding onto.

Don't get fooled by Walcott's little spurt.

Walcott has been delivering at a decent level all season and his overall score is actually very decent. I'm interested in him now because I think Wenger is using him increasingly as a wide forward and not a winger.

I've been watching Spurs since Saha was signed and Bale has definitely been getting less chances to score, and generally less of the attacking role is placed on his shoulders. Ade and Saha up front have taken on the mantle, especially in the centre. I really do wonder if he's going to be relying on assists from now.

Spurs also may have a blank GW29, but I think the wider point is that he may not be the same FPL player anymore.

But VdV is back fit (and sh1t) now. I can't see Saha and Kranjcar keeping Lennon and VdV on the bench for long. Especially as you point out it seems to have dramatically reduced Bale's attacking threat - I think we'll see a large change after this game and go back to the first choice from earlier in the season.

Has been awful recently - and generally not that great this season.
Even when he went on that scoring streak he wasn't playing that well to begin with.
He's still a good player but he just needs to get his head back into it.

Yeah I was very surprised to see Lennon and VDV on the bench for the match, VDV came on in the 2nd half but no Lennon to my surprise.

To stay on the side of caution I'll keep Bale for now but if the Ade/Saha combo continues and/or Bale stays less attacking he'll be off.

I can see why you might not rate VDV, while talented there are many matches he just doesn't seem to be really there.

He has some good games away but I'd only count on him to keep home CS tbh. The home fixtures are TOT WBA SUN FUL NEW (only 5 in the next 12 GWs) which makes maybe 2 home matches I'd count on him to keep CS. It depends on how much you trust his away CS.

Tricky I lose a lot if I get rid, and will then want them back for the DGW? Which I won't be able to afford without downgrading and potentially losing all if not more than the points I gained. They have a great run-in. More likely to bench for bad weeks and write off GW29.

Time for a Walcott rant: Theo is one of those players that manages to escape the truth time and again. Just when you think, at last he's been found out for what he really is, he bags a couple and buys himself a few more weeks. Repeat throughout career. Again a very average player. Which other players play out their careers in similarly frustrating manner?

On his day he's decent for the price. More productive than Moses.

I'm so gonna have to take a hit this GW!

    No keeper, dodgy defence!

At least you can warrant the hit if neither or your keepers is gonna play.

Yes, relative to what I'd have without the transfer, it's worth taking the hit. Still going from crap to crap 😉

Yes - for enough GWs to make it mandatory to sell him.

Don't be surprised to see Pulis dump Begovic when he next makes an error.

Pulis has done amazingly with his resources but maybe he'll find punishing people immediately at the first sign of failure doesn't work as a long term strategy?

I think you need to sort your GK''s out, neither are nailed on far from it.

Thanks for the reply, Im thinking the same thing, I wont be able to afford to buy them back so will probably bench them although Bale is likely to score against most teams so its mainly BAE that is the worry.
