Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Young Guns

Our Watchlist rankings have had their regular weekly refresh and can be found in their usual location – in the lower right sidebar. Once again, we’re seeing City’s assets slip with form, fixtures and injuries working against them. Budget defenders continue to offer exceptional value, and while there looks to be just a single slot up for grabs in our attacks, the midfields are seeing plenty of movement, with strong mid-price and budget options pushing for selection.

Goalkeepers

Adam Bogdan remains at the top of the goalkeeper rankings – partly due to the wealth of defensive alternatives available to cover returns from other teams. The likes of Steven Caulker, Stephen Kelly, Andy Wilkinson, Gareth McAuley and Benoit Assou-Ekotto all offer cheaper or more favourable routes to their respective defences.

Bogdan’s clean sheet potential may be limited but, at 4.0 in the FPL and with exceptionally strong fixtures, the Hungarian offers the cheapest option in Bolton’s defence, allowing us to cover other teams with the aforementioned defenders – all of whom look more favorable than their respective goalkeepers. It should also be noted that Bogdan has returned nine points from saves in his last nine games, including four points in the last three matches – for a miserly 4.0, that’s not a bad solution. He also works well in tandem with both of the top owned keepers – Michel Vorm and Tim Krul, over their run of tough fixtures in the next month.

David De Gea is your heavyweight option with exceptional form and fixtures in his favour. Anders Lindegaard’s imminent return to fitness is a mild concern but, right now, you can be confident in De Gea’s starts for another three to four Gameweeks, with strong clean sheet potential available.

In the mid-price bracket, Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer and Tottenham’s Brad Friedel both offer assured quality acquisitions with decent fixtures ahead. Again though, Kelly for Fulham and Assou-Ekotto for Spurs look stronger routes to the defensive returns on offer. Likewise, while West Brom’s Ben Foster looks to have potential, his appeal is reduced by the availability of Gareth McAuley as an outstanding budget prospect.

In terms of goalkeeping rotation, we like Bogdan with Schwarzer until Gameweek 34, with Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet then replacing Bogdan and rotating nicely with the Fulham stopper until the penultimate Gameweek. The final day lottery is the issue there, with Schwarzer facing Spurs away and Mignolet up against United. Friedel and Mignolet is another pairing worth investigating – they swap home and away up until Gameweek 35 but have favourable fixtures between them right until the season end.

Defenders

Jonny Evans continues to look an essential bargain purchase who just can’t be ignored for United’s run-in. He’s being chased by Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel, who for us just has the edge on Jose Enrique with greater goal threat. The Glen Johnson/Martin Kelly situation is worth monitoring here though – should Johnson’s injury see him sidelined for a number of weeks, Kelly’s potential, at 5.2 in the FPL, could rival Skrtel on our Watchlists.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto is back on the radar ahead of a run of favourable opponents which should see him supplement assist potential with a clean sheet or two. Steven Caulker, Stephen Kelly and Gareth McAuley then rank next – all offering outstanding value coverage for the Swansea, Fulham and West Brom defences.

City’s defence has seen a decline over the past week or so, hindered by injuries to both Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott. That leaves Micah Richards as the most likely name right now – even he could be under threat once again once Pablo Zabaleta returns to fitness. Suddenly, from being prime stock, the City defence is now in flux with a rough run of fixtures and insecurity playing their part. There looks to be better value elsewhere.

Midfielders

Gareth Bale holds the top spot – but only on the promise of delivering returns over a favourable run of opponents. He’s now under severe threat from both United’s Ashley Young and Arsenal’s Theo Walcott.

Both have very strong form going forward, with the fixtues to translate that into returns. The pair also play second fiddle to heavy-hitting strikers and are therefore “double-up” options respectively. Few Fantasy managers will be concerned by that – both Arsenal and United look good for goals and we could see many squads adopt the duo in the coming weeks. While Young has the edge with a better short-term fixture, Walcott offers greater security and is also cheaper at 8.9. Long-term, then, the Arsenal man could be set for a jump above Young, particularly once the tricky trip to Everton is out of the way.

Clint Dempsey is clinging to a top five ranking – based mainly on favourable home fixtures. He’ll likely need to deliver against Swansea to stave off FPL sales, although with Norwich and Bolton also in the frame in the next four Gameweeks, patience appears to be the best policy.

West Brom’s James Morrison and Bolton’s Ryo Miyaichi – both with fixtures and form in their favour, are your budget option differentials available to shake things up. Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa is also an intriguing option. He could be set for a run of starts following his goal at the Emirates – particularly if Ryan Taylor’s calf injury keeps him out for a number of weeks.

Forwards

Both Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney look rock solid at the top of the rankings – positions that they could well hold from now until the end of the season. Their form and fixtures could potentially mean that most Fantasy managers are looking to fill just one slot in their forward line – with budget likely to be the deciding factor.

Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor looks to have fixtures on his side and could be the on the cusp of another spurt of profit. West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie is our favoured option further down the price brackets, with City’s Mario Balotelli, stepping over team-mate Sergio Aguero to offer a cheaper route into City’s attacking potential.

Down in the budget market, Norwich City’s Grant Holt and the Blackburn pairing of Yakubu and Junior Hoilett remain decent options. Although with a tag of 6.4, Fulham’s Pavel Pogrebnyak looks to offer the stronger value and will likely be the option of choice, with tempting Craven Cottage fixtures ahead.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Are you guys avoiding taking hits between now and the end of the season? When you're trying to climb the rankings it's difficult to make changes outwith the FT's.

My policy hasn't changed and won't from week 1 to week 37. If I think the hit will pay off, I do it, if I don't, then I don't do it.

i'm with Adzion on this Count. not making changes can cost you dear, If it looks good go for it. Its better to have done a change and it not pay off than to not do it and kick yourself when the player you considered scores big, there's nothing worse really.

I agree, have not taken a hot since GW17, though I maybe slightly regret not taking one last week to get one of Suarez or Enrique in. Will likely take one in GW32.

i had a good one last year, one of the double gameweeks i asked peoples thoughts on taking a 16 point hit and most people said it was madness. I took the plunge in a moment of ignorance and ended up with a score for the week of 147 - the hit. I would have been manic had i not done it and had a smugness not since seen in the land of smug. 🙂

So if Chelsea progress in the FA cup they could be due a DGW since Europe might make it impossible to reschedule a PL game midweek.

Just had a look at the schedule for FA Cup and CL. Chelsea would have to make the semi final of both competitions for them to definitely have a DGW.

May I be allowed to tell you how well my hits went?

I was all depressed, as although my moves, at my behest, allowed a rise of three, no less - I was criticised, nay, ostracised, called a critter by people who were bitter - but listen up, for what follows behoves no less!

My normal minileagues are very tough. I have that wally Soggy Biscuits - but that's a laugh. However, in my head to head, I prevailed despite my eight point hit - enough. My opponents below are all on points they boast to show - and certainly they're more than I can grow!

BUT - I AM NUMBER ONE - WHAT FUN!!! 😀

I just looked at your team it seems caught between two stools. Half the players who were good weeks ago and should have been got rid of weeks ago. Then there are the spurs players who will probably come good from gameweek 31 onwards. Your kind of cancelling yourself out and threading water.
At least you have got rooney.

    GW29

    Schwarzer

    Skrtel Evans Ridgewell Enrique

    Nani Dempsey Mata Siggy

    RVP Rooney(c)

    Mignolet Holt Caulker Drenthetwat

    1FT

    Could do Drenthe > Morrison or Nani/Mata > Bale/Walcott

Or wait a week and have more flexibility with 2FT

    What you think?

Can I get some thought on my benching dilemma? I am starting Krul in goal, which 3 of the these would you play?

    Skrtel, Evans, BAE, Simpson, Taiwo

Or play 4 at back? Front 7 is:

    Siggy, McClean, Silva, Bale (Yaya)
    Rvp(v), Ba, Rooney(C)

No Taiwo for a start. And I would bench Simpson or Skrtel. Tough call. Zero attacking threat from Simpson vs Skrtel who enjoys a header. Norwich like to have a go vs QPR who are a bit shit.

I would play Skrtel Evans BAE

You will want Bale back in a couple of weeks. Most people are selling Silva out of those 3.. I'm keeping all for at least one more week. After that maybe sell Dempsey. City have to win the next games so Silva is very important going forward..

I see some people have had some decent luck with various hits paying off. Any recommendations for my team?

    Krul, Linde

    Richards, Enrique, Evans, Rangel, Kelly
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Siggy, Surman
    RVP, Rooney, Ba

    1FT

Obviously I need to get rid of Linde (3 United) so I have the potential to get Valencia at some point. However I am happy to play Krul for the next couple of relatively easy fixtures. I also want to get rid of Silva (is he really going to do anything against Chelsea?). Currently my plan is to save a transfer so I have better options to make changes next week. Is this a good idea or do I need to make changes now and possibly take a hit? Help much appreciated, thanks 🙂

      Only you can tell. However:

      Silva to Young
      Lindegaard to Mignolet

      ... might be an option ... ! 😀

Yeah that is a big option because Silva may do nothing against a resurgent Chelsea and United have Wolves. However Young would start off with -4pts. Not sure how worth it it is

Yeah the keeper change makes sense mainly because it prevents me getting a United midfielder. However I don't need to do it this week though as I'm not sure its worth getting Young or Valencia in for a hit over Silva. I would do it next week for sure as I have 2FT. Sound plan? or not really

Evening all. After the rankings finished updating today I found myself in the top 10k...for the first time EVER! (3rd season playing)..*wipes tear of happiness from corner of eye*

Now..I took out Bale for Mata 3 weeks ago and it's been a small success (Bale 7pts v Mata 12pts). The plan was always to get Bale back this week...should I go ahead and do this move? Chelsea's great fixtures seem a long way away.
I also have Sorensen and Richards to deal with but they can wait.

So, Mata to Bale.........(or VDV even 😉 ) ?? VDV could be a little glory punt...hmm....thanks.

Don't agree. 🙂 They gave me .62 extra, anyway. Today, I withdrew £35.00, which made it a £105.00 profit, net over eighteen months. Not a lot, but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!

my brother has your take on it too, he says better to come out even than to lose which is fine but i'd personally do the £2 on the nose. I've done pretty well too with my online accounts. all in good profit and i have another £140 coming back if united win the league. I like to take advantage of the bookies free bets.

i tend to keep myself well in check when it comes to the gambling. My best mate had a pretty bad problem with it. Seen the harm a bad gambling habit can have.

Yeah, also tempting. But I did Verm & Aguero > Heitinga & Rooney ahead of the DGW. It was a great move until Verm scored and Heits missed the derby.

I'm gonna save my transfer though if there's any chance he'll be available this week. Although I heard there were rumours he's out for a few weeks now?

Yes - there have been mutterings. Nothing definite. I may be trimming my defence instead.

Ridgewell or McAuley is my next move.

I am completely undecided. I want to pick up Rooney tonight. Suarez + YaYa ---> Rooney + Reo Coker (or any other very cheap mid you would suggest), 4 pt. hit with 0.0 in the bank. If I wait another hour or so Rooney will jump in price and can't do it.

    Migs / Vorm
    BAE, Simpson, Enrique, Skrtel, Senderos
Bale , Dempsey, YaYa, Pilkington, Siggy
    Ba, Suarez, RVP

    Any suggestions? Please?

chelsea catch bayern on a bad day and win the champions league.
