Watchlist

The Watchlist – Martin Petrov

Last week’s torrent of rescheduling wrought merry havoc on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) landscape and, as we emerge bleary-eyed to survey our newfound surroundings, the prospect of bumper double Gameweek harvests and blank Gameweek droughts dominate our horizons. Sewing your hopes where long term goals are married with short term gain is not easy when few fields are sheltered from the inconstant temper of the resculpted fixture list, but Bolton Wanderers have surfaced from the maelstrom well placed to offer Fantasy managers that elusive opportunity.

Back-to-back doubles in Gameweeks 35 (SWA, avl) and 36 (sun, TOT) dangle a juicy carrot for those long term investors willing to brave the stick of a Gameweek 34 blank. In the short term, a visit from a Fulham outfit with just two away wins all season, and a cruise up to Tyneside to probe Alan Pardew’s patchwork rearguard could prove fertile furrows for a Trotters side with three wins and seven goals in their last three Premier League encounters.

Central to the late upturn in Bolton’s fortunes has been the resurgence of Martin Petrov. Recently re-installed on the left by Owen Coyle, the Bulgarian international has broken into a canter after a somewhat pedestrian season thus far. A goal, an assist and three bonus points over his last two outings bear testimony to the reinvigorated threat of a player boasting more shots than the rest of the Bolton midfield combined between Gameweeks 30-31.

Petrov’s cultivated left foot has long ensured him a decent slice of the set-piece pie. An indirect free kick specialist, he currently shares corner kicks with recent Watchlistee Ryo Miyaichi, and with the faltering form of Ivan Klasnic and Kevin Davies regularly consigning both to the bench, Petrov has grabbed the chance to add spot-kick duties to his extensive repertoire.

With injuries rife at the Reebok, Petrov’s fine form should secure a berth wide left for the foreseeable future and with transfer targets stacking up for Fantasy managers in preparation for the Gameweek 36 bonanza, cheap differentials with strong form and consistent fixtures are more sought after now than ever.

Currently priced at 5.1 and owned by a mere 4%, Petrov costs marginally more than his immediate competitors in the Bolton midfield Ryo Myaichi (4.9) and Mark Davies (4.8). Considering his set-piece potential and recent domination of the Bolton midfield from open play, however, an additional outlay of 0.3 is unlikely to constitute a prohibitive premium, with the Bulgarian looking set to play a pivotal part in Coyle’s quest for top-flight safety.

With the likes of Bale, VDV, Mata, HBA, Siggy and Sess are people not thinking of playing a midfield 5 in GW36?

No. My mifield and forwards for GW 36 will be most likely this:
          Bale-Siggy-Sess-Mata
          Rooney-Ade-Cisse

Considering fixtures after GW36, that midfield could muck you up really. Kind of negates the whole point in the DGW.

It's based on the same logic though. "he's always done well in dgws" & "he's never done well away from home". Both are based on previous experiences. However he's displayed his poor away form far more times than his good dgw form.

It's not a monstrous mistake as things stand because we don't know how it will pan out. He shouldn't be a definite pick for the DGW nor should he be overlooked as he could score in both games. He is worth keeping if you have him as I do but there are equally good if not better options out there.

I think that I might have cracked it. As Bale, Valencia and Siggie are pretty much no brainers, that leaves two midfield slots.

I think that I will go with walcott and barfa (and bench siggie in GW33 (qpr) and walcott in GW35(CHE))

Mrs China Mag will go with dempsey and sessegnon (and bench dempsey in GW33 (CHE) and sessegnon in GW35 (avl))

This was discussed earlier. Siggy's poor home form can be explained by looking at what those home fixtures were: Arsenal, City, Chelsea, Everton. Aside from Norwich he hasn't been tested against a weaker defence at home.

Playing any Fulham player away from home makes no sense on form, I think they've scored something like 7 goals all season away from home in the premier league which is pretty atrocious.

Walcott on the other hand is inform against an out of form Man City with pretty poor away form.

Having analysed the fixtures I believe Chelsea, Tottenham, Newcastle and Liverpool have the best DGW games whilst Swansea and Sunderland have brilliant fixtures the same week

    Chelsea
Not many great options due to rotation but I feel the best picks will be Terry (secure place and biggest goal threat from defence) and Mata, whilst Torres and Drogba could be a great flair punts. Cahill is a budget option but is more than likely to be rotated for one of the games with Luiz waiting in the wings

    Tottenham
Lots of good options but also rotational as well as injury doubts over the likes of VDV Defoe Lennon
The best picks imo would be Bale, Adebayor, either fullback and Friedel
Whilst Kaboul has been fantastic this season there is always a chance he may get a rest due to the presence of King and Nelsen considering the amount of games they have in a short space of time

    Newcastle
Like Spurs there a few good options, the best of the bunch being Cisse and Ben Arfa. The likes of Krul Simpson and Williamson are also tempting picks but have less value imo as both games are away against sides who are likely to score

    Liverpool
Whilst their form can be likened to a young teenager lifting weights for the first time in front of his friends, their fixtures are still relatively good, and despite a recent downturn in defensive form the likes of Enrique and Skrtel will still appeal. Attacking wise Gerrard and Suarez could be a great differential considering any goal Pool score is likely to come through one of them as shown in the previous DGW

Quick mention to Baines who will attract strong interest due to Evertons defensive form as well as attacking potential. It is worth noting that despite his obvious attacking intent, he has the same number of goals as Terry this season and only 1 more assist

Although Fulham have the worst of the DGW fixtures due to their anonymous away form combined with trips to Everton and Pool, the DGW King Clint Dempsey is still worthy of investment as a punt despite poor away form

Bolton and Stoke are worth staying clear off imo though the likes of Bogdan, Miyaichi, Petrov, Huth and Crouch may appeal to some

So using all that knowledge a team such as the one below would be ideal IMO

    Friedel (Mignolet)
    Baines Enrique Williamson (Caulker Evans)
    Bale Mata Sessegnon Siggy Dempsey
    Adebayor Cisse (RVP)

the likes of Terry, Ben Arfa and Gerrard just missing out

If the disconnection was on your part (your internet messed up) then its your fault. Stupid I know but thats how they do it.

Ive lost plenty because of my inet.

Can I ask why you were winning 4-0 though? You are supposed to keep it to 2-0 so that they dont quit. I always keep a two goal gap because when it gets to three, they always quit.

If no one has Valencia in your mini league most certainly get him in. Most have him in mine which is why I'm holding onto Young for a bit longer a praying for some luck.

Also on the Bendtner fron O'Neill has come out saying he's going to give fringe players more of a chance in the team now that they've got to the 'magical' 40 points. He states Connor Wickham and Ji Dong-won specifically. As someone who has just brought in Bendtner this worries me ever so slightly.

Strong possibility that will happen. Pogba, Cleverley Berba might get a run out against Swansea...

Rooney to Berba would free up muchos cash

Could even make me sell Rooney for a DGWer (Cisse or Torres)

very much the same, Evans, Rooney and even Valencia no longer essential as fringe players may get a run-out.

I've got a bad feeling about this gw. Maybe it's just the two man city fixtures on my team sheet; and the risk of cahill playing 59minutes.

    Krul
    Baines Evans Cahill
    Valencia(vc) Dempsey Siggy Walcott
    RVP Rooney(C) Papiss

Why on earth would Cahill only play 59 min? He will play 90 mins or 0 mins.

lol! I said that to somebody on Saturday and reassured him that his bench player would come on because Cahill wasn't starting so had about 10% chance of coming on, unless there was an injury!

        He wasn't happy with me

But if Luiz is carrying a knock he may only play half the match.
