The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Lost In Rotation

Maybe it’s the loss of control – the fear that, no matter the logic behind our decisions, we’re at the mercy of another’s whims. Whatever the psychological babble surrounding the Fantasy manager’s view of the rotation policy, there’s no doubt that it can hit us hard – just below the gut, where it really hurts.

If today’s teamsheets at Goodison and White Hart Lane provided early Gameweek wounds, we can at least take some comfort that at least one of the culprits will be similarly bruised as a result of the tinkering.

Harry Redknapp’s decision to make five changes for the home clash with Norwich ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea truly backfired, condemning Spurs to a damaging defeat, leaving the back door ajar for Newcastle to drew level on points with their routine win over Bolton.

Without the promptings and threat of Rafael Van der Vaart and the power and presence of Emmanuel Adebayor, Spurs struggled to make an impression on yet another spirited Norwich showing. With Scott Parker also preserved, Spurs were unable to wrestle control; even the belated introduction of Adebayor failed to spark them as they slipped to a 2-1 reverse.

Gareth Bale was fit enough to start but, again, failed to register returns. His performances have warranted better but, with Spurs scoring just six goals in their last seven games, Bale has struggled to maintain the form that had seen him nudge his way to essential status in Fantasy terms. That status has slipped spectacularly – nine starts without a goal makes painful reading for his remaining owners and will doubtless fuel further heavy Fantasy sales.

Over 40,000 have already shed the Welshman off the back of the uncertainty going into today’s game – there’s likely to be plenty more to follow with the yawning Gameweek 34 blank looming. Bale’s Gameweek 36 double with Blackburn and Bolton remains a temptation and could yet carry a sting for those who have lost patience. Indeed, the run-in remains ridiculously favourable for Redknapp’s men but the loss of form is alarming. Bale can’t turn fortunes and win matches on his own – his efforts in recent weeks have proved that much.

Form is certainly no issue at Goodison Park, with today’s 4-0 rout of Sunderland bringing their third win in four. Despite the result, David Moyes was the other villain of the day. The Scot also made five changes to his lineup, notably resting Nikaca Jelevic and Leighton Baines, a player who had, until today, had missed just a single league game over the past two a bit seasons. Unlike Redknapp, however, Moyes will be feeling rather smug this evening.

The Everton boss watched his “makeshift” lineup sweep Sunderland aside with Scout Pick Steven Pienaar and winger Magaye Gueye particularly influential. He’ll now sit back and observe how Kenny Dalglish shuffles his pack for tomorrow night’s Ewood Park visit, comfortable in the knowledge that his own key players are well rested for their FA Cup clash, opening up a four point gap over their rivals in the process.

Credit to Moyes, the plan came together beautifully. When that plan is a rotation policy, however, it’s so often us Fantasy managers left wincing. I’d like to imagine that Moyes will feel just a small pang of regret with his celebratory dram and slippers tonight. We already know that Harry will be choking on his Horlicks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Rather have the points on the board than be dissapointed down the line by injuries/suspensions/rotation in the DGW36.

I'm not obsessed by having 11 (I'll have 10) but I certainly want a strong side for every week. Plus looking at the fixtures of the 10 that are playing for me in GW34 I'm hoping for some big returns when some managers are only playing about 7 players that week

planning to ship bale out for walcott to get 11 players for gw34. will resist the temptation to make transfer in gw35 to have 2FT in gw36. current lineup for gw 36:

    krul (wig/chel)
verm (sto) mcauley (AVL) caulker (BOL)
valencia (man city) walcott(sto) mclean (WOL) dempsey (eve/liv)
papiss (wig/chel) rvp (sto) rooney (man city)

    subs: vorm, kelly, evans, siggy

with only 3 dgw player, is it wise to transfer out verm and walcott -> kaboul and VDV?even willing to remove rooney for torres @ drogba if anyone of them is confirm starter

I'm getting rid of Walcott in time for GW36 and Komp (which could read Verm for you). Not sold on VDV I'm afraid. Think Bale would be a better bet. I'm looking at bringing in Baines instead of Kaboul but think both are good buys.

It's a while away but I'd play Siggy over McClean for DGW as well

thats my dilemma. i think its a waste of FT to transfer out bale to walcott just to get 11 players for gw34, only to get him back for the DGW. but then looking at the fixtures, aston villa, bolton, chelsea and everton seems the team that have the nicest fixtures. so the temptation is very strong to get in james collins, gary cahill, torres, mata, jelavic or petrov. but then the rotation risk is a major problem here

Lot of people going of Spurs at the moment. Let's see what they do in 35 before diving in for 36. There are gonna be injuries/rotation etc.

I thought long and hard about Collins then decided against it. If you must have Villa, maybe Cuellar better? Jelavic is certainly an option.

Be very wary of Chelsea players.....they have Arsenal away and Barcelona twice between now and DGW....oh and Spurs in a Cup semi.......they will be knackered and in tatters, I reckon..

Same here, Walcott out after GW34 for Dempsey (WIG & DGW) and then Kompany to Baines for me.

the only way for me to get baines and HBA is to downgrade rooney first. with 2FT and a hit for gw 36, perhaps i can do verm -> baines, mclean -> HBA and rooney -> adebayor which will give me 8 dgw players. your thoughts?

My only issue with that is if one of the other players don't play you're down to nine. Another one and you're down to eight. If you can get 11 without a hit, I'd do it.

Song or Arteta can score and Wenger will be keen to open up a gap between them and chasing pack (al playing cup semis, apart from 'toon)! Think Wigan could get spanked...

From looking like world-beaters deserving a win at Eastlands, we yesterday managed to lose at home to a Norwich-team that we so comprehensively dominated at Carrow Road earlier in the season.

I am not sure which is the most bizarre - the form collapse or that I, as a Spurs fan, is actually disappointed for only being 4th in the BPL.

It's honestly awful. Norwich should have had the game wrapped up before halftime. As optimistic as I can possibly be, I can't see us beating Chelsea or QPR in our next two games unless something changes fast

Already have 11 players for GW34 and 2FT

    I have two choices

Surman to McClean and keep 1FT

or trf Kaboul (sub) out to another DGW player.. (think he will be back in time but unknown)

the other subs are Bale annd Saurez both who have DGW

Santon is a shoe in for my team next year. I presume that we will buy a left back, and switch him to the right (sorry simmo), as he is very one footed. On his proper side he will be awesome. And should still be pretty cheap too.

Very right footed. Actually started out as a right winger. He played left back as inter's right back at the time was a bit good (his name escapes me).

Have you seen him play? He always makes great runs down the left wing, then has to cut inside to cross with his right.

He has made a couple of mistakes, but that is normal for such a young lad. He is an attacking fullback, but definitely not a defensive liability.

haven't really had time to study Santon. although what you describe sounds somewhat like when we had lee young-pyo. rightfooted left-back (who was somehow worse playing on the right)

Reckon I'll be running with 2 or 3 for 'toon again all next season. Just hope their prices don't go crazy over the summer......Cisse & HBA should still be reasonable as only played half a season. Or is it done on form rather than total points.

I've been sneakily enjoying the cheap toon assets for the last two seasons. In my opinion, they were ridiculously under priced. We kept loads of clean sheets last season, but still our defenders all came in at 4-4.5 mill. Won't be the case next season, that's for sure!

Honestly can't see Swansea maintaining their defence into next season.
Vorm will probably receive offers from bigger clubs, even if he stays Caulker is leaving and they won't be such a mystery to clubs anymore.

    Alright all.

Wondering what people's thoughts are on my current team.

I can field 10players this GW. They are

    Taiwo / Caulker / Jevans / Sagna
    Valencia / Siggy / Walcott / Sess
    RVP / Rooney

    Krul / Sorenson / Baines / Cisse / HBA

Now I've got 1 free and 2m in the bank. I can obviously afford to upgrade Sorenson and Taiwo but I'm not sure it's worth it. If I save the tranny I'm in a bit position moving forward but is it short sighted to think like that and not field a strong side of 11 when I'm in a position to do so (4pt hit mind)

So, what do you guys reckon? Open to any suggestions and advice.

    Cheers

I'm in the same position. Have 9 for GW34, and 2 free transfers. Definitely getting rid of Enrique, but might not bother doing Santon to Turner, which was my original thinking. That way I will onloy have 10 for GW34, but will be able to play 8DGW with no hit, instead of 7 with a hit. What do you reckon?

For you, i would definitely swap sorenson this week. Even if it means a hit later down the line. You will probably make up the points in GW34, and will probably want to bench krul for city at home and everton away, so get a keeper to cover those fixtures.

Anything that limits a hit has got to be good. So yeah, I think you're right with your team. Who are you thinking for Enrique?

I guess the only keeper worth considering for this GW is Vorm. Bloody expensive though. Ming looks like he may get rotated with Gordon so he's a dodgy choice. Bloody keepers!

You have Mclean for SUN cover. Really necesarry to get Sess? GEt Siggurdson rather. You can play both Mclean/Siggy in gw 36.

Only reason am getting sess is my h2h opponent has sess and since he is playing upfront, he has more chances to score against a weak wolves side...

I love Shola Ameobi! There. I said it!

I have slagged the lad of LOADS over his career, for generally being a bit rubbish (apart from one year when he ripped it up in the champions league)

But this season he has proved himself to be a more than useful impact sub. He changed the game for us again when he came on last night. Pity he cant't play a full game, because we might need him to next season when we lose the demba's to the african nations (again! - ggrrrrrrr)

NB I am talking real football, not fantasy. Under no circumstances should you buy shola ameobi. Unless you are on a wildcard and we are playing sunderland!! He AWLWAYS scores against them!

Up until recently, i would have agreed with you on shola. But now I think he can do a good job as an impact sub.

I'm not sure how you can say that Sammi is rubbish. He is 18 years old, and had a couple of appearances earlier in the season against top 6 sides and then got injured. Give the lad a chance!!

I haven't seen enough of him to form an opinion. He did very well for the reserves and england U21 though

No, it will be a Dempsey goal as every news outlet out there has it as his. They won't take it off him now.
