The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Lost In Rotation

Maybe it’s the loss of control – the fear that, no matter the logic behind our decisions, we’re at the mercy of another’s whims. Whatever the psychological babble surrounding the Fantasy manager’s view of the rotation policy, there’s no doubt that it can hit us hard – just below the gut, where it really hurts.

If today’s teamsheets at Goodison and White Hart Lane provided early Gameweek wounds, we can at least take some comfort that at least one of the culprits will be similarly bruised as a result of the tinkering.

Harry Redknapp’s decision to make five changes for the home clash with Norwich ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea truly backfired, condemning Spurs to a damaging defeat, leaving the back door ajar for Newcastle to drew level on points with their routine win over Bolton.

Without the promptings and threat of Rafael Van der Vaart and the power and presence of Emmanuel Adebayor, Spurs struggled to make an impression on yet another spirited Norwich showing. With Scott Parker also preserved, Spurs were unable to wrestle control; even the belated introduction of Adebayor failed to spark them as they slipped to a 2-1 reverse.

Gareth Bale was fit enough to start but, again, failed to register returns. His performances have warranted better but, with Spurs scoring just six goals in their last seven games, Bale has struggled to maintain the form that had seen him nudge his way to essential status in Fantasy terms. That status has slipped spectacularly – nine starts without a goal makes painful reading for his remaining owners and will doubtless fuel further heavy Fantasy sales.

Over 40,000 have already shed the Welshman off the back of the uncertainty going into today’s game – there’s likely to be plenty more to follow with the yawning Gameweek 34 blank looming. Bale’s Gameweek 36 double with Blackburn and Bolton remains a temptation and could yet carry a sting for those who have lost patience. Indeed, the run-in remains ridiculously favourable for Redknapp’s men but the loss of form is alarming. Bale can’t turn fortunes and win matches on his own – his efforts in recent weeks have proved that much.

Form is certainly no issue at Goodison Park, with today’s 4-0 rout of Sunderland bringing their third win in four. Despite the result, David Moyes was the other villain of the day. The Scot also made five changes to his lineup, notably resting Nikaca Jelevic and Leighton Baines, a player who had, until today, had missed just a single league game over the past two a bit seasons. Unlike Redknapp, however, Moyes will be feeling rather smug this evening.

The Everton boss watched his “makeshift” lineup sweep Sunderland aside with Scout Pick Steven Pienaar and winger Magaye Gueye particularly influential. He’ll now sit back and observe how Kenny Dalglish shuffles his pack for tomorrow night’s Ewood Park visit, comfortable in the knowledge that his own key players are well rested for their FA Cup clash, opening up a four point gap over their rivals in the process.

Credit to Moyes, the plan came together beautifully. When that plan is a rotation policy, however, it’s so often us Fantasy managers left wincing. I’d like to imagine that Moyes will feel just a small pang of regret with his celebratory dram and slippers tonight. We already know that Harry will be choking on his Horlicks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Which transfer? I want to field 11 players next gameweek

    A) Ben Arfa -> McClean
    B) Bale -> Sess
    C) None of the above

A will require a hit to bring Cisse in for GW35
B will free up cash for Jelavic -> Cisse in GW35

    So which one?

But my question is: Do you have faith in the Tot defence even when Kaboul is fit? I've lost it but I'm biased and a good chance you might be too. But if I were you, I'd get Kaboul out. The quality of set-pieces were atrocious yesterday. It was screaming for VDV to come on in the 2nd half.

He got it wrong big-time. But its also interesting to see how your players run out of gas at the same time. One plays poorly and it spreads like an infection.

Bale was so unlucky though you had to say Norwich deserved the win. I wouldn't be ashamed of being on par with Newcastle actually. They've been a very very good side this year. I just hope their inexperience will mean they drop points in the tough fixtures.

Yeah very frustrating to see them run out of gas. In fairness to the players though, 'Arry barely rotates them around or has a fully prepped/utilized squad to deal with such a long season. Read a stat that in the last 2 years since January under Redknapp, Spurs have played 34, Won 12, Drawn 13, Lost 9, For 46, Against 40 for just a 35% win percentage.

And look at the players brought in and let go in January this year. Not very smart moves to let the likes of Pienaar, Corluka, etc go

I'd hold on Ivano. FA might take some action on him due to that punch on Maloney. And the answer to your question - he's first-choice but will be rotated for other decent RBs in Paulo/Bosingwa/even Luiz. he's been immense for us off-late but lacks the ability to start 90 mins every 3 days.

Yup. Cahill & Luiz don't know how to play together. But again, JT's rib injury could be a nagging concern. Cole when fit should start every game.

Too prone to rotation there and not a huge potential for points as well. Might as well Tot/New attack + Moses/Sig.

Truly my worst transfer of the season since I've been here. But there is hope. MON missed Bendy yesterday. There was no-one to hold the long balls and were losing possession easily. Let's hope MON sees this too!

Unfortunately, I made this 3rd striker decision post gw32, after Sun defeated City. Clearly it was a wrong one! I like Graham but he was rested last game as well.

Odem plays too deep for my liking, Yak seems to be off the radar away from home and Dzeko....not sure with Tevez back.

If bendy's confirmed out, I might take a hit to get Graham (if he starts tmr).

Guess tomorrow's games could help us decide.

Unless it's DGW players that you need to remove, I'd try to get 11 for hits. The worst that could happen is a loss of 2-3 points.

Last time I did not follow my gut, Nani scored 18pts vs Wolves.

Might also then keep Walcott and sell Valencia for VDV/bale to have a bit of a differential. Would have had Val on my bench for gw 36 anyway.

I'm seriously looking at Huth for gw 36-38. Shawx cheaper option and seems to pick up boners at home although not such a goal threat.

    Hello Deadzone!

Well, I'm thinking of doing Simpson+Kelly to Caulker+Turner this week, for a hit though. Worth it, as those two would have got me a big zero but Caulker+Turner should get me a 4 atleast, and I quite fancy either one to keep a CS. But is Turner nailed on enough for the rest of the season or should I just splash the cash for Bardsley and his apparently better attacking potential?

I'd love to have Sess vs Wolves, tbh.
Could get Bale back for the DGW. Or would it ruin your plans?

It looks like, keep bale and field 8 DGW with a hit or sell bale and bring him back to field 7 DGW players with a hit. So it really does come down to:

        Walcott vs Wigan, Chelsea
        Bale vs (blank), qpr

I guess put like that I should probably suck it up and get him in but I lose .5 on bale too...

I like your thinking. Walc over Bale then!

The big question that everyone wants to know the answer to:

Do you leave all your non-playing players in the team for GW34, so that you get a surge to your ranking at the end of the GW, or do you get the points in the bag early doors to scare your opponents?!

    I'm doing the former.

Currently on 8 players for gw34, the usual suspects. Got 1ft and 2.5m in bank so opting for 10 with a -4 hit.

Does anyone see the logic in getting a villa defender for a likely max 2pts to hope a they can make them up the following week?

Hello peeps. Currently have 9 players for GW 34. Should I transfer Miyaichi out for McClean, have 10 players for GW 34, but not have any Bolton players for GW 35 & 36? Or should I keep Miyaichi for GWs 35 & 36 and only have 9 players in GW 34?
