The Captain Poll – Gameweek Thirty Seven

The penultimate Gameweek of the season kicks off tomorrow. After last week’s bumper double header, Fantasy managers are fast running out of time to make up their mini-league differences. The Captaincy armband is, more than ever, a vital choice…

A familiar name has run away with our poll thus far. Robin Van Persie will have surely claimed the armband more than any other player this season and yet, after a prolonged dry spell, confidence was beginning to wane. The tap-in at Stoke, coupled with a favourable fixture appears to have turned the tide back his way.

After scoring his first goal from open play in eight fixtures at the Britannia, the Arsenal skipper is back on track to win the Premier League golden boot and keep his side in check for third spot. A home game against a safe and stuttering Norwich outfit adds plenty of weight to the argument for Van Persie to be the top candidate.

With the Arsenal fixture being the sole Saturday match-up (an early kick-off thanks to tube works and the FA Cup Final) those who back Robin to build on his recent showing have the opportunity to get their Gameweek rolling early, although should the Dutchman fall flat, Sunday promises to be an uncomfortable experience.

With a proportion of Fantasy managers shedding Van Persie for double Gameweek temptations, there’s a tough decision to be made. While the Dutchman’s potential is strong, there’s clearly a differential to be had for those brave enough to look elsewhere.

Wayne Rooney is an obvious plan B. There’s a case to be made for United’s attacking players given their home fixture with Swansea and the need to attack to help close the goal difference on rivals City.

With Robert Mancini’s side kicking off early at Newcastle on Sunday, United will take to the Old Trafford pitch knowing the scale of their task. A win for City and it will be interesting to see how United react given that City will be eyeing up a home clash with QPR on the final day. Sir Alex Ferguson has played down the goal difference factor but, should City squeak a narrow win, then United will surely have to go for the throat against the Swans rather than write the title off.

Papiss Cisse and Nikica Jelavic rounds out a strong trio of striker alternatives to the Van Persie option. The latter looking the more viable route: the Croatian striker has brought a goalscoring zest that Everton fans have been craving for years and is up against a Wolves side with nothing but pride to play for. Everton goals look assured and that normally has Jelavic getting in on the act.

As for Cisse, he’ll face a City defence hell-bent on keeping him out to allow both Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero the chance to weave their magic. The Senegal striker looks almost impossible to stop right now, however, his strike at Chelsea demonstrating that he’s a threat from all angles. It would still be a brave decision to back Cisse over the top three poll candidates, given City’s determination and defensive resolve.

A risk might be a necessity at this stage, however, and while Cisse fits the bill there are clearly other candidates to consider. Incredibly, Victor Moses has demanded more transfer attention than any other player so far in the Gameweek. His form, coupled with Wigan’s own confidence and remaining fixtures, has seen him worked into over 50,000 squads so far this week. Moses would make an unlikely Gameweek captain but, for those desperate to go out on a limb, he’s clearly an option to explore.

Goals from midfield perhaps look more likely from Tottenham’s Rafael Van der Vaart and Fulham’s Clint Dempsey. Both have obliging Sunday fixtures. Van der Vaart goes to Villa Park having delivered on his double Gameweek promise and will surely carry the biggest goal threat to the home defence. Dempsey has stuttered since the return of Pavel Pogrebnyak but, similarly, will remain a major threat to a hopelessly erratic Sunderland back four.

While that pairing have struggled to make an impression in our poll, it’s perhaps even more surprising to see a lack of support for City’s strikers. City surely have to get three points at Newcastle and, in Aguero, they have a striker who has scored five goals in the last four, including three goals in his last two away trips. It seems certain that Mancini will have to look for a couple of goals from Sunday’s trip and Aguero looks well placed to be amongst them. While United’s attacking assets get the attention, perhaps City’s strikers could present the most viable alternative to Van Persie for those seeking something a little different.

Our Captain’s Poll will run and run in the middle menu of the Homepage to see where the lay of the land is as the deadline approaches.

    Howdy Folks,

Please will you guys look at my team and plans and let me know what you think?

    Mignolet
    Jag, Kompany, Caulker
    Pienaar, Dempsey, Bale, Val
    Rooney, RVP, Cisse

    Krul, Sig, Evans(INJ), Simpson(Doubt)
    0.9 in the Bank
    Mini-League leads: (1) 24pts (2) 33pts

    1. I picked Mignolet over Krul...is that a bad idea do you think?
    2. I'm playing Caulker because my remaining defenders are out. Should I stick one (Evans) in with Simpson 1st defender sub and Caulker...in case one happens to make it?
    3. Should I do a transfer in for Simpson? Who to go for between Kaboul and ShawX or should I just pray Caulker doesn't get owned this weekend?
    4. Can I dare take a hit with the small lead that I have?

    My plans for transfers were:

    GW37: Save
GW38: Demps to Moses, Cisse to Aguero

    But could be...

    GW37: Simpson to ShawX/Kaboul
    GW38: Sig to Moses

Sorry for the dilemma...any feedback would be great. Thanks!

I've nearly the exact same problem as I have Caulker, Simpson & Evans, to be honest I think you should transfer one out - maybe Hibbert or Kaboul.

I'm not sure about the Sig to Moses move, because who are you going to bench and it could just be a waste of a transfer

Well I have Jag (EVE) so you reckon Kaboul instead of ShawX?

If I get ShawX then I match my one rival and as long as I score what he does I should be ok right? We have a lot of players canceling each other out and my differentials have been better for the most part...so match or try out do?

sorry forgot you had Jag, Kaboul seems like a decent option, but I just looked at ShawXs fixtures and they are really good, plus he is always a danger from set pieces, so actually i'd go for Shawx

    1FT, 2.1 in the bank.

Mignolet* (looks like Gordon will start ahead though)
    Verm - Lescott - Caulker
    Bale - Valencia - Demps - Pienaar
    Ade - RVP (c) - Cisse

Subs: Bogdan, Siggy - Simpson (doubt) - Evans(inj)

I think I could be doing with a new keeper or changing one of my defenders.

    A) Play Turner @ Fulham, save a tranny and (maybe) bring in Moses + Aguero for Cisse + Demps next week for free

    B) Evans -> Hibbert (who’s owned by chasing rival) this week (bench Turner), then Rooney -> Aguero next week.

    Current GW37 team:

    Krul
    Vermaelen - Enrique - Hibbert
    Dempsey - Valencia - Pienaar - Moses
    RVP(c) - Aguero - Jelavic(vc)

Bench: Vorm - Sigurdsson - Caulker - Evans

Worth a -4 to do either of these?
    A. Sigurdsson -> VDV
    B. Evans -> Clichy

Is EVERYONE shipping out Cisse for RVP/Rooney?

I have Rooney, Jelavic & Cisse up front. Newcastle at home have been formidable this season.

Is Cisse for RVP worth it?

I have a shocking team for this week's games.

    Vorm/Ruddy

    BAE/Simpson/Evans/Caulker/Lescott

    Sess/Pienaar/Young/Siggy/Ben Arfa

    Rooney/Jelavic/Cisse

Who to drop, who to bring in?

Just want to get into the top 1K overall and trailing by 19 points, so think I will need to do something different to make up some ground.

Not really fussed if it fails and I end up dropping from #1800 to #5000

Is it worth it to get in Moses for (-4 hit) but I will bench Petrov in that case or just do not get him no (-4 hit) and play Petrov?

This one is killing me because my feeling says: I think Moses will do fairly well and I really need him and it will be an outside shout, I am even thinking of giving him the armband. But my mind says it is not worth a (-4 hit) while I do have an alternative decent option "Petrov"

Anyone considering Gibbs as an alternative defender option for the injuries currently plaguing our teams?

I did consider it but already have Vermaelen but I think Gibbs is a good shout if you want an Arsenal defender and can't afford the rest

I think Arsenal will win both their remaining games.

Whether they will keep clean sheets in both is another matter.

Gibbs has a good record when it comes to assists/goals though (for some who has played so few games) so he is probably not a bad shout.

Turner mostly gets points when on my bench. Therefore i might play Evans, wait for Turner's goal + CS, then watch him swan into my team at the end of the week....
That said, last time i tried that with Kelly (ful) @ Villa, the little scamp ended up playing, then conceding in the 92nd minute, leaving 9 point Caulker cackling at me from the bench.
Cue Evans recovery, and 1 min appearance before breaking down again.......

    Hi guys!

Need your advice on who to bring in. I am 10 points behind my rival, have 1 FT and he has 2FT.

    My team: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1463087/history/

    Rival's team: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/818349/history/

Thanks in advance. P.S.: I think I need to bring either Roo/RVP for Cisse and a good defender. Could be wrong though.

      Agreed on keeping Evans

Money no object, you chance Baines, but he may not make it. Otherwise, Terry, Ivanovic, Huth, Walker or Evra

ok folks any reason not to go ahead with my McClean to Maloney move?

    Current Squad

    De Gea, Mingolet

    Evans, Verm, Jags, Santon, Caulker

    VdV, Bale, Dempsey, McClean, Siggy

    Cisse, RvP, Jelly

Enough cash to do Cisse to Aguero next week for no hit.
