Season Review

Team of the Season – Michel Vorm

Often dependable, sometimes spectacular, Michel Vorm was undoubtedly one of the stars of Swansea’s superb season back in the top flight.

A £1.5m capture from Utrecht, the Dutch stopper was outstanding from his first showing in the 4-0 defeat at Man City in the opening Gameweek. While his defence received the runaround from debutant Sergio Aguero on that occasion, Vorm showed enough to hint at his potential – his 10 saves on the night was never bettered by any keeper all season.

As the Gameweeks rolled by, Vorm was to inspire the Swans’ defence to an extraordinary run of clean sheets at the Liberty Stadium that was to quickly establish him as one of the season’s most wanted Fantasy assets.

The Statistics

Vorm’s strong first campaign saw him rank only behind City’s Joe Hart in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) keeper chart, as the Dutchman recorded 14 clean sheets to Hart’s 17. Trailing the City stopper by just eight points overall, Vorm’s value, with an initial 4.0 price compared to Hart’s 7.0, is undeniable.

While Hart slipped to a low of 6.8, Vorm’s price escalated week by week; by Gameweek 23 it peaked at 5.3. As the season closed, he was owned by a third of the FPL manager base – only Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale boasted more owners: an incredible feat for a relative unknown in his first season in England’s top-flight.

While the Swansea possession game and stable back four will take some credit for Vorm’s achievements, it’s worth emphasising just how much the keeper played his part. His 143 saves in the FPL was second only to Wolves’ Wayne Hennessey, a keeper who received plenty of shot-stopping practice in front of a fragile and shuffled rearguard.

Only Vorm’s bonus point haul disappoints: the fact that he mustered just three all season is surely symptomatic of an EA Player Performance Index that rarely acknowledges the contributions made by the men between the sticks.

The Prospects

Swansea’s player of the year in his first season, Michel Vorm has killed any speculation by declaring that his future lies at the Liberty. That will have disappointed the queue of suitors that was thought to include Arsenal, eyeing him up as a deputy to Wojciech Szczesny.

While that news is welcomed both in Wales and amongst Fantasy managers, sadly it seems inevitable that we have enjoyed the very best of Vorm in Fantasy terms. The Swansea defence, priced so keenly by the FPL this term, will surely be in line for significant price rises across the board, with Vorm subject to an increase of around 1.5 to put him firmly in the mid-price bracket.

That is likely to dent his potential next term, with the clamour for budget keepers the now-established strategy in the FPL. Even if Swansea can repeat their defensive feats of 2011/12, it remains to be seen if Vorm can attract interest with a price tag that will rank him alongside the likes of Brad Friedel and Tim Howard – excellent keepers who last season captured around just 5% of the FPL ownership in comparison.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well, little danger of England fans' hopes being suddenly raised to unrealistic levels. Perhaps Woy wants to start from as low a point as poss to give him the best chance of exceeding expectations over the next couple of years, but it won't start this summer.

Foster's a spoilt brat who thinks he should be England's no 1, and sulks when he doesn't get starts. So he retired for intl football.

And many footballers have the cheek to tell fans that playing for their country is just sooooo important. Nonsense.

I think the FA have a really hard job picking a manager from 30 million self-professed candidates.

I trust Hodgson to do well long-term, considering what he has available. I just think this squad demonstrates how little he has to work with.

I dont think mine matter for much, nor can i give light on why he picked certain players. He obviously has some plan involved.

And the "outrage" over picking Downing/ Milner is more just showing the lack of options in certain areas. Picking a Lennon over him will make little difference probably.

He obviously overall is picking players based on a number of merits and excluding others - Richards perhaps cos of his inability to show he can play as a normal fullback.

Whatever I think anyway the idea my /anyone here has a "better" idea than the man doing it for 30 years is ludicrous which was my point.

Yet every second comment here professes to me more informed based on watching a stream every weekend.

Yes, but theres a large difference for me in saying i think X should go perhaps because of this.... but its only my opinion rather than the tedious "this is what should have happened"..with the implied greater knowledge on it than the man doing the job.

Which thrashing are you most looking forward to? I like an underdog myself, so it'll be nice to see a 9-man Ukraine give us a pasting.

Seriously though, I don't have a problem with the picks, considering the options. It's just disappointing to be reminded how small the pool of talent is. Our squad looks like also-rans next to the other teams.

Thoroughly annoyed G Johnson has been picked over Micah Richards. Annoyed, but not surprised.

I'd class GJ as one of the most overrated England players, without question.

i guess no bcoz Germany, Spain,Netherlands have a very good unit of 15-16 World Class players and about 20 OK sort of players(from which 7-8) are selected to make up the Bench strength..

In England there are about 3-4 World class guys and about 30 OK sort of players..So,thats the problem

Hart is good and solid and doesn't make mistakes, which makes him the best in england but not one of the best in the world.
            Cole is over the hill
Gerrard hasn't been 100% for years now

of course every country has these debates, you just don't read them. They often follow partizan lines of course. There was plenty of debate here when van Marwijk cut his squad down more this week. I know that in France there is always loads of debate about their squads

Is this based on the one year scouting and 30 years experience in the area with a full team behind you also informing you of their opinion to pool the best results for a specific formation to get as far as possible delibrating over 1000 of hours of video, live games, knowledge of how they function in groups and how or players get on with them

      or

Based on playing fantasy football, match highlights and occasional broadcasted match?

      Still think its a mistake?

Richards has no sense of position and for a man like Hodgson who is a stickler for shape, it meant Richards never had a chance of going.

I don't know what is with all the hate for Milner, he is so versatile and he is so damn English it would be disgraceful to leave him out.

That is why the current and former England manager didn't select him? And why Mancini prefers Zabeletta? Just because Richards is quick and pushes people around doesn't mean he is the complete full-back, he isn't anywhere near it.
