Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Euro 2012 Friendlies

Mario Gomez is amongst the goals as Germany see off Israel and return to winning ways. Franck Ribery helps France to a 2-0 home win over Serbia as the hosts ring the changes and trial a 4-3-3, while Kyriakos Papadopoulos gets the only goal of the game as Greece chalk up a narrow win in Armenia:

France 2 Serbia 0
Laurent Blanc rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for France’s 2-0 win over Serbia last night, with only two players – Karim Benzema and Philippe Mexes – keeping the same position from Sunday’s win over Iceland. There were plenty changes to the backline, with Laurent Koscielny, Gael Clichy and Anthony Reveillere all handed starts, though Blanc’s midfield plans were disrupted after just four minutes as Yann M’Vila limped off with a worrying ankle injury. Franck Ribery opened the scoring after 10 minutes, netting after the opposition keeper had spilled Clichy’s cross, before Florent Malouda fired home the second from the edge of the area just six minutes later as Les Bleus extended their unbeaten run to 20 matches. Post-match, Blanc was reported to have said M’Vila has “a big ankle sprain” but didn’t expect the player to miss the tournament – further tests are expected today.

France Starting XI: Lloris; Reveillere, Koscielny, Mexes (Rami 72), Clichy; Cabaye (Martin 61), M’Vila (Diarra 5), Malouda (Ben Arfa 76); Nasri, Benzema (Giroud 61), Ribery (Menez 61).

Armenia 0 Greece 1
Greece recorded their first clean sheet in six games as they clinched a 1-0 win in Armenia. Fantasy managers will be frustrated with a change in keeper, as Michail Sifakis replaced Konstantinos Chalkias between the posts. Sokratis Papastathopoulos started at right-back with Vasileios Torosidis afforded the night off after picking up an injury at the weekend – this allowed Schalke man Kyriakos Papadopoulos to return to centre-half and he offered further evidence of his attacking potential by grabbing the only goal of the game. Priced at 4.5, Papadopoulos is one of the most popular players in the McDonald’s game and currently has over 16% ownership, though this will no doubt increase after last night’s display. Sotiris Ninis failed to shake off an injury, allowing Kostas Fortounis to make his first start for the national team in a night where Fernando Santos’ side failed to make the scoreline more substantial by missing two second half spot-kicks; Georgios Samaras (70) and Kostas Katsouranis (86) were the culprits.

Greece Starting XI: Sifakis; Papastathopoulos (Makos 62), A. Papadopoulos, K. Papadopoulos, Holebas (Tzavellas 60); Katsouranis, Maniatis, Karagounis (Fotakis 46); Fortounis (Samaras 46), Gekas (Ioannnis 62), Salpingidis (Mitroglou 85).

Germany 2 Israel 0
With seven of their Bayern contingent back on board, Germany bounced back from their weekend 5-3 defeat by Switzerland to see off Israel 2-0. Joachim Low made a host of changes, as Toni Kroos partnered Sami Khedira in the double pivot due to Bastian Schweinsteiger’s injury, while Mario Gomez was given the nod ahead of Miroslav Klose up front – Gomez justified his selection by opening the scoring five minutes before the break, with Thomas Muller providing the assist. Low made five changes later in the second half, with Mesut Ozil the only attacking player to be afforded the full 90 minutes, as Andre Schurrle – on as a sub for Lukas Podolski – firing home a superb second.

Germany Starting XI: Neuer; Boateng, Badstuber, Mertesacker, Lahm; Kroos (Gotze 86), Khedira (Bender 88); Muller (83), Ozil, Podolski (Schurrle 66); Gomez (Klose 66).

How would you rate chances of Ben Arfa and Afellay of making it to the starting eleven?

I think France will line up as they did yesterday with Benzema up front and RIbery - Nasri - Malouda behind and M'Villa and Cabaye playing the pivots.

Ben Arfa looks to be an impact sub but if he did crack the XI would surely be a bargain differential.

Afellay is a SMALL possibility but I really doubt it. He's one of the only 'natural' wings they have besides Robben so you never know.

The german striker selection is killing me. Who is most likley to get the start?

IMO....a german will be the highest scorer on 06/09. Portugal will leak at least 2.

    who will it be?

This is the other problem. If Muller is the "most nailed on" then who is the "most dangerous" and more capable of a massive haul? It as got to be one of Gomes/Klose/Podolski.

Exactly for this reason I've gone with Ozil...

Currently have Ozil, Wesley, Iniesta, and Ronny to cover a nailed on attacker of all the four major nations I expect to be in with a shout. Have doubled on Holland wiht Robben as well, though Ibra looks good too I might yet make the change. Obviously one of these will be dropping out in the groups but will deal with that in due course... 🙂

That looks like its going to be the group with the most goals in it, for sure.

Bookies are making Germany v Portugal of the top 3 group games where they expect the most goals to be scored in.

The other two are Spain v Ireland and Spain v Croatia, which makes you think twice about bothering with Given and Strinic after the first set of group matches.

Ozil is a must for me, but Young is also well worth a gamble, especially for GW2. M'Vila could get tackle/ball recovery points but I prefer to steer towards more attacking assets. Shirokov is in my team as a value play, along with Dario.

Don't feel pressured to spend all money for GW1, it's point potential not price that matters, I'l got £3m in the bank and I'm comfortable with my GW1 squad.

Silva would be high on my list as a Mid for GW2 and beyond, but not as Att. Arshavin is a good bet for Rusky att points, the most guaranteed starter of their forward players, but he'll be pushed over to the left, but that did him little harm in 2008.

Don't see value in De Rossi, will play and could get recovered ball/tackle points but better options about for me.

Far from certain. He played at CB in place of injured Mathijsen the other night but has covered LB before. Vlaar is most likely otherwise. The other three look pretty secure, but then their FPL prices say as much.

    Ok here it goes.

I do not post many RMT's but his is really tough! So many factors....not only do you have to worry about fixture/form/probable starts, you also have to factor when they play!

    Szcz/Given
    Alba/Zhirkov/Kpapa/Hubnik/Strinic
    Ozil/Sneijder/Yarmolenko/Mandy/Andrews
    Huntelaar/Muller/Ibra

    Or Huntelaar>RVP?

    Thanks all!

Is anyone taking a punt on Van Der Wiel? Holland are favourites to get a clean sheet and Denmark are joint favourites to lose theirs. So both attacking and defensive potential to be found in Holland.

True, but they're not the worst at defending and they are against Denmark. And in a competitive match, and not a friendly you can count on a feisty Dutch defence.

i don't have much faith in the Dutch back line, even if the bookies have got them as favourites to keep a cleansheet. I think with the limited 2 choices in the McD's fantasy two attacking options would be a better way to go.

Past World Cups/Euros have shown us that it is often not the big name strikers that get the golden boot etc. this is what worries me about RVP, ibra etc I am starting with lesser names in the groups and hoping for the seemingly unpredictable doubles/hat tricks that occur almost under the radar. So Baros, Gekas & Lewandowski for me.

    Am I being foolish?

So Chelsea have signed Gregory Van der Wiel, Marko Marin, Eden Hazard, and Hulk. Look like great contenders for next year. United should sign Kagawa, even though they already have Gaitan to strengthen midfield. United just need a good RB, would love to see Micah Richards there even though he's at City. Anyone think a shock transfer of RVP to United is possible? Predictions for the top four 2012/2013: Man City, Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool. Currently....

Wants to play in the Premier League as well and deserves to. 101 goals in 4 seasons is mighty impressive, even if it is the Scottish League.

101 goals in the scottish league equates to about 10 in a decent league.
