Euro 2012

Euro 2012 – McDonald’s Update the Assist Rule

It’s come to our attention that since we published our previous guide to the McDonald’s game, there has been an important tweak to the assist rule that is beneficial to Fantasy managers.

Beforehand, the game had simply replicated the rule of the Champions League format, also run by Uefa. Assists were not awarded for shots that rebounded off the woodwork or opposition goalkeeper, neither were they granted if the goalscorer had to beat an opponent before scoring, as stated below:

An assist is awarded when the goalscorer receives the ball directly from a team-mate (including the goalkeeper) and scores without having to take the ball past an opponent. If the assist pass takes a small deflection which does not change the direction of the ball, it will still be given. No assists are awarded for own goals or penalties. Live assists are provisional and will be reviewed within 24 hours of the match.

Now, however, they’ve made it a little more straightforward for us. Ahead of Friday’s kick-off, the addition of a few handy alterations should consequently lead to higher scoring rounds across the board.

It’s refreshing to see that rebounds will now count – this seemed an obvious flaw and brings the rule system more in line with most Fantasy games. A player now also receives assist points if he makes the final pass prior to the ball finishing in the back of the net, regardless of whether the scorer needed to beat an opponent – again this is a positive step.

Although players will not be awarded assist points for converted penalties or free-kicks, if a player is brought down in the box and his side are subsequently awarded a spot-kick, he will still receive an extra point, regardless of whether the ball finishes in the back of the net or not.

A player will be credited with a “goal assist” when he delivers/plays the final pass, cross, header or shot, which leads to the goal being scored. This will also apply to set plays (i.e. corner, free kick, throw-in etc.).
An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal.
When a pass, shot or cross by an attacker contributes to an own goal, an assist can be awarded to the attacker.
Only one player can be credited with an assist per goal scored.
No assist is awarded to a player winning a penalty or a free kick.
No assist is given to a player who creates his own goalscoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).

Hopefully this will be the one and only rule change to the game prior and during the tournament. However, those long in the tooth may remember that this wasn’t quite the case during the FIFA World Cup. We’ll stay on the look out for any further subtle changes and alert you should any arise.

Hey guys, I'm not too sure whether I've got players who won't play and not sure if I've got a good team 😛

    Malafeev/Given

K Pap, Kadlec, Debuchy, Alba, Piszeck

    Ozil, Rosicky, Afellay, Shirokov, Srna

    RVP, Ibra, Lewandowski

Thoughts would be very much appreciated!

Really, really like that, one of the best teams I've seen here in a while.

      Just 2 problems for me:

      1. Malfeev not 100% nailed on, but if he is then he's a cracking pick.

      2. I personally don't believe the Afellay hype. If I was convinced that he was in the first XI, then I'd be sold immediately though.

Seriously considering Silva for my GW1 team. If not, then Alonso will be in there. Is it madness to have Alonso/Silva nailed on in one's team? It's not like they're overly popular picks

They are playing Italy, so I would think again. Plus they are very expensive for their potential. Torres could be better punt than Silva and if you are keeping Alonso for RB than might as well bring in Andrews to do the same thing. Don't think you should be relying on penalties to score points

But... Italy's last game? Surely Spain can carve em open too, and if they do then Silva seems to be their best finisher atm. I wouldn't rule Alonso out of scoring from play either, I think he has just as good a chance as Xavi or Iniesta at scoring from play, if not better.

Don't let friendlies misguide you. Italy is a good team and have a strong defense. The maximum, I can see is Italy conceding 2 goals and Silva assisting one (may not even get that by the rules) and Alonso not involved in any of them. Alonso doesn't come forward much so I don't think he can score from his own half against Italy.

I think the main striker (Torres hopefully) and one from Xavi/Iniesta. Silva may get a goal, but I can't see that happening tbh.

I've posted this one time earlier, but I'll give it one more go. I'm making a tiny write-up for my mini-league to get them to actually join, and in it I'm including a list of who are the best fantasy-prospects for each nation. Do you agree to what I've written or are there any obvious changes that should be made?

    CZE: Cech – M. Kadlec – Rosicky – Baros
    RUS: Akinfeev/Malafeev – Zhirkov – Shirokov/Dzagoev – Pog/Pav/Ars/Ker

DEN - agree but same as CZE
POR - Meireles not worth it
      GER - Klose/Gomez should be Podolski/Muller
      ESP - agree
ITA - Di Natale your man up front for Italy
IRL - Forget apart from Andrews as a cheap mid

I realize that no one would want to go for Greek, Czech or Danish, but it's just meant for mini-league players (who are not the brightest fantasy footballers) who might get a crazy idea to invest in these attacks if they for example think that Greece have an easy match coming up.

    Zhirkov(A) Alba(C) Strinić(C) Lescott(D) Debuchy(D)

    Hmmm, Ogbonna!!

Mario Balotelli shook off his injury to score a hat-trick in today’s first Krakow game between ranks, as Italy tested out the 3-5-2 system for Spain.

The Manchester City striker had limped off during Monday’s training session with a muscular problem, but was back in action today.

He bagged a hat-trick in the game between ranks of 10 v 10, cheered on by the fans in the Polish stands.

Sebastian Giovinco and Antonio Di Natale got two goals each, while Andrea Pirlo, Claudio Marchisio, Antonio Cassano, Emiliano Giaccherini and Thiago Motta were also on target.

Coach Cesare Prandelli continued to test out the 3-5-2 system with Daniele De Rossi placed at the centre of the defence with Angelo Ogbonna and Giorgio Chiellini.

It is increasingly likely this will be the starting approach against Spain in their Euro 2012 opener on Sunday afternoon.

Marchisio and Antonio Nocerino supported Pirlo in midfield, while Christian Maggio was rested due to a slight muscular problem.
