Matchday Two – Day Two – Dugout Discussion

Yesterday’s batch of Group A results afforded all four teams the chance of a place in the final eight and, this evening, Holland and Portugal will be hoping to keep their dreams alive after opening day defeats. As always, our Dugout Discussion is up and running ahead of the first of the Group B matches:

Today’s early kick-off sees Denmark take on the Portuguese and, with a win against the Dutch already under their belt, Morten Olsen’s men will be confident of upsetting the odds once again.

The team news is already in and the lineups are as follows:

Portugal XI: Patricio; Pereira, Alves, Pepe, Coentrao; Veloso, Moutinho, Meireles; Nani, Postiga, Ronaldo

Denmark XI:Andersen; Jacobsen, Kjaer, Agger, S Poulsen; Kvist, Zimling, Eriksen; Rommedahl, Bendtner, Krohn-Deli

Unsurprisingly, Morten Olsen keeps the same starting XI that saw off Holland 1-0 last Saturday, with Michael Krohn-Deli looking to notch for the second successive Group B game. Lars Jacobsen can expect a busy time at right-back, as he lines up directly against Cristiano Ronaldo.

Paulo Bento’s side is also unchanged following their narrow defeat to Germany. Helder Postiga keeps his place as the lone forward, though with Hugo Almeida now recovered from flu and the highly-rated youngster Nelson Oliveira pushing for pitch time, Postiga is unlikely to last the 90 minutes unless he considerably ups his game, after a poor performance last time out.

    Order of Extreme Valour - FFS Euro 2012 - Matchday 2 Day 1 Report

    Note: This is the report for the FFS Euro 2012 award only; there is a separate report for the FFS Friendly World Cup!

    Brave FFS Euro 2012 managers have woken up today in a world where the rules to the Order of Extreme Valour are not as they once were. A player now selected by more than 3 people is no longer considered a differential pick. And on that bombshell, lets us review yesterday's act of valour.

    To highlight the turmoil caused by our new rule change, the numerous owners of Gebre Selassie and Pilar will find themselves out of the running, barring a captain's armband being worn by one of those players. Former FFS favourite, Jakub "Kuba" Blaszczykowski, was only selected by 2 courageous managers, "FFS King" Mark and "Lord of the Teamsheets" Childish Gambino. Kuba's 8 point haul proved to be the only genuinely succesful punt of the evening. The Light Knight (that's right, I referred to myself in the third person) was left rueing his misfortune by Salpingidis' yellow card and numerous offsides, while Roscola and SuperDunny managed to earn 3 points from their plucky selections of Boesnich and Katsouranis respectively.

    Looking forward to tonight's possible contenders, we see that following last week's unexpected success, the Danes have become the brave manager's team of choice. Starting off at the back, we see the noble selectors, Ginkapo and Jafalad, hoping for a repeat of last week's impressive shut out by choosing Poulsen and Jacobsen respectively. Ginkapo has also gone for the the man who scored the only goal against the Dutch, Krohn-Dehli. We also see that Sporting ABG (much to the chagrin of his partner) continues with Christian Eriksen, while Doosra is joined by ENR in the valorous backing of mercurial forward, Dennis Rommedahl. Elsewhere in the group, we find that Childish Gambino and Chrissy Waddle have turned their backs on former FPL favourite, Ronaldo, in favour of his compatriot Nani.

    I was adamant that I would stick with Dzagoev but as it’s getting closer to kick off I’m getting itchy feet.

    Have Gomez, Iniesta/Fabregas and Benzema and know that when watching I will be wanting all to do well but will be a bit deflated if they do better than Dzagoev which doesn’t make sense so think I may just switch.

      FWIW, I had the c on Dzagoev and made the switch. Had Dzag got 16 I'd probably have stuck, but this game is meant to be fun.

      I looked at it this way. No one else in my ML has Dzag so those 7 points are mine anyway. The guy I'm most worried by will c Gomez, if he does go crazy I could lose heavily, whilst if he doesn't I have not lost anything as I have another shot with Mandzukic to get my captaincy right.

    After reading the plethora of posts regarding the Dzagoev stick or twist situation I think I’ve been convinced enough to take the risk. Ronaldo needs a big performance tonight! He’s the best player in the tournament. Time for him to prove his worth. I predict a goal and an assist tonight

    Plus teams I’m chasing in my MLs will most likely stick and since I’m chasing I think its worth the risk. I have Iniesta, Silva and Nasri as backups which makes it a little easier.

    I have 12 transfers remaining for the round on the Sky game.

    Is it worth taking out Hart for a cheaper keeper to fit Ronaldo in (would replace Ibrahamovic) and captain him too? I only have Lahm and Ozil playing today, Ozil being my captain.

      The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body today decided to impose a deduction of six points on the Football Union of Russia (RFS) for the qualifying competition of the next UEFA European Football Championship.

      This decision is suspended for a probationary period running from now until the end of the play-offs for the UEFA EURO 2016 finals.

      The RFS has also been fined €120,000. The RFS was facing charges for the improper conduct of its supporters (crowd disturbances), the setting off and throwing of fireworks and the display of illicit banners at last Friday's UEFA EURO 2012 Group A match against the Czech Republic in Wroclaw.

      An appeal can be lodged against this decision within three days of the dispatch of the written decision.

    Russians get a SUSPENDED 6 point deduction for the next Euros.

    Still a brave move by UEFA and I think that is a serious deterrent.

    Ronaldo (arguably the best European footballer) is already 3 goals behind a relatively unknown Russian 21 year old called Alan in the golden boot award. Add to this the fact that Portugal need to win tonight or their Euro 2012 campaign is as good as over...I reckon he'll be up for this one tonight.

    ...Basically, I'm going to gamble and swap from Dzagoev. Then hope either Ronaldo/Iniesta/Benzema do their bad thing.
