Sky Sports Game – Man of the Match Analysis
Filed under: Fantasy Football Games - Posted by: Paul
Our next article focussing on this season’s Sky Sports game analyses the Man of the Match (MoM) awards from the previous campaign. Bearing in mind that 5 points is on offer (the equivalent of a goal or clean sheet) for the recipient, it’s a significant factor in our selection process as we look to balance our Fantasy budgets:
First of all, we take a look at the MoM awards per position over 2011/12. From the 380 matches that took place last time out, 335 of the MoM recipients are still plying their trade in the Premier League and the breakdown per position makes for interesting reading.
Of those 335, Goalkeepers received just 19, a mere 6% of the haul, while Defenders picked up 61, or 18%. Perhaps surprisingly, Forwards received 103 of those 335 MoM awards, which equates to 31% but, in comparison, Midfielders were far and away the most popular, with a total of 152, or 45%.
| Pos | % Total Awards | Players with1-2 Awards | Players with 3-4 Awards | Players with 5+ Awards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goalkeepers | 6% | 5 | 4 | 0 |
| Defenders | 18% | 36 | 3 | 0 |
| Midfielders | 45% | 39 | 21 | 5 |
| Forwards | 31% | 29 | 7 | 6 |
The Goalkeepers
Bearing in mind he failed to record a single clean sheet on the road and managed just three at home all season, John Ruddy caught the judges’ eye more than any other keeper. The Norwich man picked up 4 MoM awards but, despite the fact he also saved a spot-kick, returned a mere 45 points; priced at 4.6 he is far from enticing, though new boss Chris Hughton will be hoping to instill a little more resilience in the Canaries’ backline this term.
Michel Vorm, Ben Foster and Shay Given were next best with three apiece. The Swansea stopper has been slapped with a 5.2 price tag this time round after finishing as second top scoring keeper last season but a change of manager is likely to lessen his overall appeal. Given, at 4.3, is the cheapest of the trio, with Foster priced at 4.7 after returning 10 clean sheets in 2011/12. For keepers, Man of the Match awards are basically non-existent the higher up the table we go; only Tim Krul and Brad Friedel – with one each – managed any from the top eight teams.
The Defenders
Only three defenders received more than two MoM awards over the entirety of last term. Swansea’s Ashley Williams led the way with four; as a result he has been valued at 6.9, though with Swans new boy and central defensive partner Chico costing just 5.0, Williams is likely to find it hard to pick up much Fantasy interest. Vincent Kompany and Leighton Baines were the two other stand-out defenders in the eyes of the Sky Sports judges – both managed three apiece and, while Baines’ 7.1 valuation may appeal to some, Kompany, at 8.0, is the costliest defender on offer this time round.
Further down the list, it’s intriguing to see that 11 of the 14 defenders to earn two MoM awards were centre-halves. The three full-backs were City pair Micah Richards and Aleksandar Kolarov but, while Spurs’ Kyle Walker offers the most guaranteed game time – at 7.7 he’s far from cheap.
Thomas Vermaelen is the priciest of the men in the middle at 7.6, with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill next up at 7.0 and Fabricio Coloccini at 6.9. Further down the price list, Villa pair James Collins and Richard Dunne are 5.4 and 5.3 respectively, with Stoke duo Ryan Shawcross (6.4) and Robert Huth (5.5) also picking up two MoM awards for Tony Pulis’ side. Others to catch the eye included West Brom’s Gareth McAuley at 6.0, Brede Hangeland (5.8) and Everton’s Sylvain Distin, who will set you back 5.3.
The Midfielders
Finally, Victor Moses has found his niche. The Wigan man picked up a staggering nine MoM awards in the Sky Sports game last season, the most of any midfielder and second overall to Robin Van Persie; clearly, a stand-out player in a team devoid of any real stars is likely to benefit in the eyes of the judges.
Moses was head and shoulders above any midfielder for MoM awards – the next best was five, a tally only four players managed. Of this quartet, Steven Pienaar is of significant interest; the South African picked up his awards over just 14 games on loan at Everton and, at 6.0, looks a real mid-price option if he makes his move to Goodison a permanent one this summer.
Gareth Bale (8.8) and Clint Dempsey (8.6) also picked up five apiece, though they played 36 and 37 games respectively – further indication of Pienaar’s potential. Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon was the only other midfielder to receive more than four MoM awards; the Black Cats’ man comes in at 7.7 this time round after accruing 153 points in 2011/12.
Looking at the overall spread, as many as 21 midfielders were awarded the MoM on three or four occasions – compare this to a mere seven forwards and it’s clear what area the judges tend to favour; unsurprisingly, those in this category include the likes of David Silva, Juan Mata, Antonio Valencia and Gylfi Sigurdsson. While the first two are the costliest midfielders in this season’s game at 9.0 and 8.9 respectively, Valencia (7.9) and Sigurdsson, in particular, at 7.3, are far kinder on the budget. Sigurdsson picked up his four MoM awards in just 17 appearance for Swansea but a move to Spurs may curtail his appeal, with Bale a clear contender for the judges affections.
More MoM standouts who offer value for money include Matthew Etherington and Wes Hoolahan; both come in at 6.8 and scored 113 and 107 points last time out. Moving into the mid-price bracket, though and there are a few enticing options to consider. Hatem Ben Arfa (6.2) picked up three awards from just 16 starts – if he can hold down the role on the right of Newcastle’s front three, the Frenchman could well appeal, while Chris Brunt and James McClean also earned three MoM each. McClean’s haul came from just 20 appearances, suggesting he could well be set to improve next term now that he is a first-team regular.
Although Paul Scholes (5.0) may not feature quite so prominently for United, he earned three MoM awards in just 14 appearances and should also benefit from the new Bonus Point Rule, which awards players with an extra two points if they make 60+ passes per game – the veteran is a real punt here but will clearly stand a chance of picking up the points when on the pitch.
The Forwards
As mentioned above, Robin Van Persie was the most popular player when it came to collecting MoM awards – the Gunners skipper picked up 12 altogether and returned a total of 310 points, way ahead of Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero on 241 and 240 respectively.
Indeed, the trio were amongst a group of just six forwards to receive more than four MoM awards in 2011/12. Rooney and Aguero picked up seven MoM apiece and, as a result come in at 9.8 and 9.9 respectively in the Sky Sports game, just behind Van Persie’s valuation of 10.0. Perhaps surprisingly, Luis Suarez was next best with six and is priced at 9.6 despite returning 155 points, exactly half Van Persie’s total.
Peter Crouch and Grant Holt were the only other forwards to earn more than four MoM awards – both received five from 32 and 24 starts respectively. The duo are valued rather steeply as a result, with Crouch at 8.8 and Holt at 8.7. Fernando Torres and Gabby Agbonlahor head the pack of players with three or four MoM awards – the Chelsea man comes in at 9.5, with the latter priced at 8.0 after a dire second half to the season, while the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse all feature here. Cisse was particularly impressive, bearing in mind he made just 13 starts after moving to the Magpies in January – at 9.3 he’s hefty on the budget but still better value than Ba (9.0), with the latter failing to fire in the last few months of the campaign after a move wide left. Adebayor’s cost of 8.6 is intriguing if he can cement a permanent move to Spurs, though the deal continues to stall due to his allegedly excessive wage demands.

Hey. If any potential organizers are around, can we get started on conceptualizing our “DeadZone League”?

Nitin Nagaraja: PS3 or Xbox? Need some opinions. says:
So what’s the plan? I doubt if the Indian league plan will work. Udit, Pratik and ENR will choose their first choice teams. That leaves only you, me, Maxi, Lateriser, Djerbil, Wazza.
July 23 at 4:45 am
EX says:
Exactly, so how about we scrap the Indian League and make a DZ one.
Preferably head to head, so it’ll be more interesting. A league independant from the Council stuff.
July 23 at 4:50 am
Nitin Nagaraja: PS3 or Xbox? Need some opinions. says:
Ex, Maxi has created a Classic and H2H league for DZers only. You haven’t joined that? If not, post your email id.

Ryan says:
Is anyone becoming increasingly sure of the team they have compiled? Unless something dramatic happens (injuries, unforeseen transfers etc) I can imagine carrying my current team and game plan into GW1.
July 23 at 4:42 am
jinswick says:
I’m fairly set at the moment. Slighty worrying my current plan involves a hit in GW2…. :-s
July 23 at 4:45 am
Ryan says:
Hmm, that would concern me. Then again I have this crazy idea of leaving 3.5m in the bank to cash in on early bandwagons or upgrade to Rooney, Aguero etc.
July 23 at 4:47 am
jinswick says:
Yeah, I played a very safe game last season and only took 3 hits. Do you think this could warrant a hit?
GW1: Torres, Aguero, Tevez
GW2: Aguero & Torres -> Rooney & Ade
Rooney and Ade have great short-medium term fixures from GW2…
July 23 at 4:47 am
Ryan says:
I’d only sell one of them depending on how they did in GW1
July 23 at 4:49 am
jinswick says:
Would mean leaving 0.5m in the bank in case I go the Aguero -> Rooney route.
Perhaps this is sensible.
July 23 at 4:51 am
Ryan says:
I’d do that. It may even be prudent to leave 1m in the bank in case there are price rises
July 23 at 4:53 am
jinswick says:
Hmmm, 0.5m banked here – whatcha think? Tempting to use the 0.5m to either do Siggy -> Bale or Taarabt -> Pienaar
Friedel, Federici
Ivanovic, Clichy, Cuellar, Demel, Fonte
Lampard, Siggy, Taarabt, Noble, Maloney
Aguero, Tevez, Torres
July 23 at 4:56 am
Ryan says:
Team looks good. I’d stick with Taarabt and Siggy. Although keep an aye on the Siggy situation ay with the warm up games. I have VDV so it would be interesting to see what the formation is like.
July 23 at 5:00 am
jinswick says:
Yeah, if Modric goes then I think one of them will be play more withdrawn with the other up in support of Ade. Tricky to tell which one though!
July 23 at 4:47 am
iLA says:
Hey Ryan, been a while.. how’s everything?
Haven’t decide on my team yet, just looking at the fixtures, prices and injuries/transfers at the mo. How’s your team coming along?
July 23 at 4:54 am
Ryan says:
Yeah mate I’m doing good. Thoroughly enjoyed the break away from FF and got into other sports such as rugby and the Tour de France.
My team is coming along good, taking a slightly different route by leaving a fair bit of dosh in the bank to see how things shape up in the first few weeks.
This is what I’ve got and I can see myself taking it into GW1 if nothing really changes
DDG, Jaas
Cole, Hangeland, Rangel, Fabio, Clyne
Hazard, VDV, Taarabt, N’Zogbia, Noble
Torres, Tevez, Graham
Bank 3.5m
July 23 at 4:59 am
iLA says:
Like the triple Chelsea, could pay off nicely. I assume the spare dosh is to get some United on gw2? How sure are you Clyne is starting, you reckon Soton is good for cleanies?
July 23 at 5:02 am
Ryan says:
Pretty certain Clyne will start. ManU were after him and he was in the championship team of the year. Is a great attacking prospect too. I won’t use him much in the first 10 weeks though, he will be a fill in for when my main defenders have a tough fixture.
Yeah the spare dosh is to upgrade Torres or Tevez to either Aguero or Rooney depending on how they go.
July 23 at 5:00 am
jinswick says:
Solid all round Ryan. If you’ve signed up as a member – check out Ivanovic vs Cole over the last 6 matches….
Only player in your team that stands out as a risk to me is N’Zog – Lambert loves to tinker and I see N’Zog being rotated a fair bit. Plus, despite their fixtures, I don’t really rate Villa.
July 23 at 5:04 am
Ryan says:
Yeah fair point that. If Pienaar moves to Everton soon I could very well swap for him instead.
I’m a big fan of Ivanovic so I will be keeping a close eye on whether Chelsea sign a RB between now and GW1. Definitely one to think about
July 23 at 4:41 am
baulchy says:
hey lads thoughts on my team any tips and advice would be great!!
de Gea, Jaaskelainen
Ivanivich, Vidic, Gunter Demel, McCartney
Hazard, Valencia, Y. Toure, Guthrie, Noble
Aguero, Torres, Graham
July 23 at 4:51 am
Otis Kay says:
valencia rotation risk. great otherwise!
July 23 at 4:51 am
ManofKent says:
I’d go for a city mid over Vidic for the first few weeks, and whilst Yaya is a decent punt I’m not wholly convinced, but basically it looks decent.
July 23 at 4:47 am
Nitin Nagaraja: PS3 or Xbox? Need some opinions. says:
Rick and Ex, council site guys.
July 23 at 4:50 am
Otis Kay says:
Federici|Friedel
Cole|Clichy|rFerdinand|(Demel)|(Fonte)
Hazard|Lampard|Noble|Mcanuff|(Britton)
Aguero|Rooney|D.Cisse
so what do we think?
July 23 at 4:51 am
Brian says:
Which combo would you expect to score more?
Silva+Taarabt+Noble
or
Ben Arfa+McClean+Sinclair

July 23 at 5:11 am
jinswick says:
Reckon I’m going with 3 big hitters up front, 2 in midfield and then 3 cheapish mids. Deciding between the 3 cheap mids – best combo for 16.5m from this selection?
Pienaar (6.5), Taarabt (6.0), Dyer (5.5), Noble (5.0), Maloney (5.0), Frei (4.5)
Current thinking is Taarabt, Dyer & Noble
July 23 at 5:14 am
Acquafresca says:
Similar to myself Jins. Are the 3 bigs up front Torres-Aguero-Rooney??
July 23 at 5:17 am
jinswick says:
At the moment they’re Torres Aguero Tevez, but will probably get Rooney & Ade in over GW2/GW3.
July 23 at 5:20 am
Pratik : Check out the new FFS UEFA site uefacouncil.wordpress.com. Or just click me. says:
I don’t like the idea of pre-determined transfers. Something always goes wrong. Isn’t two from Man-City up front, a little too much? Also do we not want Rooney to show some form before we draft him in? He usually always has a hot streak, and it’s important to get him then.
July 23 at 5:27 am
jinswick says:
Too true, although I always like to have a rough plan to go forward with. The Aguero and Tevez combo is disliked by many, but is it that different to going with say Aguero and Silva? SOT and QPR in their first 3 games is pretty tasty – could be goals galore!
Assuming Ade goes to Spurs, my likely GW2 transfer is Torres -> Ade, but if something else comes up that can wait another week. As for Rooney, like you say, I’ll probably wait for him to do something, and then snap him up!

Morning deadzoners… I’ve been pretty set on my team now for a couple of days.. Haven’t passed it by the deadzone though…
Vorm (Jaas)
Hangeland, Lescott, Cole (Kaboul, McCartney)
Bale, Hazard, Dyer, Noble, (Fox)
Kun, PIG, Pog
What do you think?
July 23 at 5:20 am
Willis_Hide says:
Defense is too expensive. Pog is risky.

Aren’t you concerned about McCartney’s gametime? Also, no Torres?
July 23 at 5:23 am
Drinky - Jong De Walkerfront says:
McCartney will play IMO… Torres CAN’T play
July 23 at 5:22 am
Acquafresca says:
I had a similar selection but many fear that it may be very tough to replace Pog after GW1, and that his value may drop if he doesn’t perform due to his crap fixtures.

can’t ignore his price and DGW… Will swap out pretty quickly if he looks like dropping..

hits are fine IMO.. as long as they are done for the right reason…

Hey JD, hows it going?
Hazard wait and see for me and Id downgrade the defs to improve one of the 3 mids. Also prefer Lambert from Pog if you have the spare 1m. imo of course.
July 23 at 5:29 am
Drinky - Jong De Walkerfront says:
Hi ILA…. good thanks.. been pretty busy but that’s not a bad thing….Hope things are good with you… taking the punt on Hazard until GW3 high ownership means as if he performs I will be left behind.. I really like the fixtures of Dyer and Noble which is why I’ve gone three weaker in the middle and stronger at the back.. Thanks for advice.. Pog is indeed my worry.. Lambert’s fixtures are pants though

Ah good to hear
have a feeling Soton will be this year’s Norwich, always concede but scores plenty as well.

same, but I still went for Graham.

This is assuming that all players (Cuellar, Bent) get back from injury, that Tevez looks like starting and that Pienaar moves to Everton. If Tevez doesn’t look like starting, i’ll bring in aguero and graham for tevez and bent. GW2 Torres>Rooney
How’s it looking, lads?
July 23 at 5:32 am
Manani says:
don’t you think it is too expensive to rotate a 5.0 4.5 4.5?
otherwise, solid. Nice pick on bent
July 23 at 5:33 am
Manani says:
of course, lack of spurs coverage.
July 23 at 5:36 am
mahfreems says:
might go hazard>bale GW3 or is that too late?
July 23 at 5:41 am
Manani says:
Could be Genius, or could fail and miss his haul against WBA.
Once you start seeing form in bale, you should get him ASAP.
July 23 at 5:46 am
Drinky - Jong De Walkerfront says:
I personally think your forward line is a massive risk all around…. Could be great but could be horrible…
Tevez – not gauranteed to play
Torres – come on it’s Torres.. I can see the logic but ITS TORRES
Bent – Bendy played better last year, end of…
Just my personal views, if you think it will coem off go for it.. It could be glorious

No one else fancy Kebe over Pog for the dbl GW?
July 23 at 5:47 am
jinswick says:
rotation risk now apparently since they signed that other winger.
July 23 at 5:49 am
Acquafresca says:
Pog may be on pens. Lets keep a close eye during preseason.

Nitin Nagaraja: PS3 or Xbox? Need some opinions. says:
No. It’ll be Harte(if he plays) or le Fondre.

Polkadot says:
3 cheap defender who rotate well for 1 def spot?
any suggest?
July 23 at 5:48 am
jinswick says:
Reason for my shocking start last season – no Rooney. Think I’ll be Rooney-less again this season at the start and only bring him in once he hits a bit of form.
July 23 at 5:48 am
ManofKent says:
I’m really unsure about Rooney – might start with Kagawa instead
July 23 at 5:50 am
jinswick says:
At the moment, I’m going with no MUN players. Playing with fire.
July 23 at 5:53 am
Acquafresca says:
What GK rotation you going with Jins?
July 23 at 5:56 am
jinswick says:
At the moment I’m going Friedel and Federici/Jaask, with the view of playing Friedel most games.
July 23 at 5:53 am
Willis_Hide says:
You’re unsure about Rooney… but you’re sure about Kagawa?
July 23 at 5:48 am
RVN10 says:
How does this mid/attack look?
Bale, Hazard, Taarabt, Moses, Guthrie
Rooney, Aguero, Graham.
I’m not too sure about Moses and Guthrie, what other possibilities do I have? Thanks.
July 23 at 5:50 am
jinswick says:
Moses – too expensive. Other than that, pretty decent.
I’d go Moses & Guthrie -> Pienaar & Noble
July 23 at 6:08 am
RVN10 says:
Yeah good point. I’ve De Gea/Federici, Ivanovic, Williams, Gunter, Fonte, Demel in defence. Do you think I should downgrade Graham and invest in Def
July 23 at 6:14 am
jinswick says:
No, nobody worth downgrading Graham to imo. 1 biggie in defence is a reasonable strategy, as long as you have 2 pairs of defenders who rotate well, so make sure yours do…

iLA says:
Wow hardly any Pool on everyone’s rmt
no one fancy Suarez? Surely he cant hit that many post again?
July 23 at 5:51 am

Maybe after Gw6 – otherwise you’re relying on him stepping up for very big matches.

July 23 at 6:01 am
mahfreems says:
tbh i really don’t know what people see in Larsson but other than that it looks solid as long as dempsey stays at fulham
July 23 at 6:05 am
mottttaaaa says:
only because of fixtures in the first 6 games 4 of which he could do very well in.. yea dempsey is only there if he stays… whats another option for larsson?
July 23 at 6:06 am
Willis_Hide says:
Very consistent player, on set-pieces (and very good at taking them as well), and pretty good fixtures.
July 23 at 6:10 am
mottttaaaa says:
is there a 2nd option for that price although im pretty happy with him being there… just a lil uncertain about my backs with fabio

5) ps3 doesn’t have kinect : P
6) xbox has better games

i guess, all valid points i suppose. but xbox is nice cuz you can get espn 3 on it, if you have a netflix account you can stream right to it, think you can go on youtube from it and other features like that, plus like i said theres a better selection of games for xbox. and the kinect is pretty cool (and will only get better) and is great for parties and stuff like that!
read this article and the comments at the bottom. hopefully that’ll help a bit
