Marouanne Fellaini towers above the United defence to earn three points for Everton as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are shackled, with Robin Van Persie reduced to a cameo role. Here’s the stock check following the Goodison clash…

On The Up

Marouanne Fellaini
Pushed up in support of Nikaca Jelavic, the big Belgian was imperious and led the line with strength and composure. It’s not clear if David Moyes will persist with Fellaini in the role, with Steven Naismith and new signing Kevin Mirallas, the Everton boss clearly has options. However, this promises to be a big season for Fellaini and at 6.5 in the FPL and 4.7 in the Sky Sports Game, Fantasy managers may well be rethinking Steven Pienaar as the protagonist in Everton’s midfield ranks.

The Everton Defence
Moyes’ rearguard was defiant throughout and magnificent to a man. Leighton Baines delivered his first clean sheet of the season – he remains the luxury item in the Toffees back four but, on this form, a strong haul of clean sheets over the season could be in the offing to help justify the outlay.

David De Gea
While United struggled in attacking terms, De Gea stood firm against a first half blue tide, pulling off notable saves to keep the score deadlocked at the interval. With Anders Lindegaard breathing down his neck, the Spaniard has to produce. Tonight he was arguably United’s most impressive performer – he had to be.

Going Down

Wayne Rooney
Rooney was the danger man for United but Sir Alex Ferguson’s attacking players were far from potent. While they dominated possession and passed the ball well, they lacked a cutting edge and a direct threat. Rooney’s owners will go into the weekend clash with Fulham concerned that Robin Van Persie will be called upon to provide that, while Rooney retreats deep.

United’s Widemen
Ferguson appeared to allow his attacking players fluidity with Shinji Kawaga and Rooney interchanging up front or drifting deep to pick up the ball. The uncertainty surrounding Kawaga’s role and the likelihood of a Rooney/Van Persie pairing will cause concern. It appears we could see Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Kawaga competing for two starts in wide areas throughout the season.

No. Unless you’re certain won’t get another striker. Aguero to Tevez. Larsson to Pienaar, McClean or Michu. Or wait until Adam Johnson signs for Sunderland.

      Gaz Downright says:

With Vertonghen signed to play in the first XI, and Kaboul’s magnificent 2011/12 season, Dawson fell down the pecking order. Considering Caulker’s also probably a better long term prospect, it’s probably best for all parts if Dawson moves. Anyone who gets him though is mighty fortunate. He would go straight into the startin XI in two thirds of all Premier League clubs.

Huddlestone might benefit from a loan, who knows.

I’m still far from convinced by AVB, but any manager could have done these moves, don’t you think?

It might also be worth noting that AVB is “Head Coach”, and can’t decide transfer activity the way Redknapp did.

    In the bank (hehe): 5.4

had DDG in goal all preseason, last minute brought in Rafael, and went with green/davis combo. Green lets 5 by for 0 points, Davis saves a pen….blah blah blah, double city defense instead of a chelsea defender, rafael WAS a fulham defender, gibson on bench, demel on bench, captained torres instead of lamps.

Last season, around 17k (??) of NTI were needed for players’ prices to go up or down.

This season, that threshold (17k) could be different. Probably total fpl/fiso will have a better gauge after a couple of weeks (they need actual data to compare actual price changes vs actual NTI)

Games last night put the term ‘Man Utd coverage’ into perspective.

Not only did every single player draw a blank, there is no clear player to have from United at the moment and getting a player in just because of the club he plays for is a bad move IMO.

Plus, how often do teams have ‘easy’ fixtures and none of their players score more than 6-8 points!

Agree, almost.. Ive got this feeling… Van Persie is the only (?!) way to go with United.. not that he looked great when he came on.. but united really need to think about their strategy and tbh I think Van P is the only player who could benefit from their play right now. I wonder if the players and clear instructions, coz they all looked, uhm… bad, and all over the place.
      Kagawa looked interesting tho

I think the best value for United over the season will be Valencia/Kagawa, but it’s too early to call at the moment with their exact roles unclear.

RVP won’t be worth 13m IMO. If he was at Arsenal and I know he would have a season like last season I’d be tempted but he’ll share a lot of set-pieces/game-time with Rooney, especially once the CL comes around.

Agree about Valencia/Kagawa, imo they did a good game yesterday and once Kagawa settles in even more he will be great.. Valencia was the only threat from the wings, even tho he played RB…
But, if Rooney drops down in the hole or to the left, which seems obvious, Van P will be great.. if he could score 30 goals in Arsenal, he could do it in United imo (Gunners fan).
But he really needs to bang them in to be worth 13m, thats for sure

    Cole zabaleta cuellar (demel) (hangeland)
    Michu bale pienaar taarabt (noble)
    Torres tevez graham

Already used transfer to bring in michu before price rise so i have 5.0 in the bank for possible transfer. Is this team ok or good for gw2? Was planning on bringing in at least one man utd attacker but just wanna wait and see……should i take any hits?
