Marouanne Fellaini towers above the United defence to earn three points for Everton as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are shackled, with Robin Van Persie reduced to a cameo role. Here’s the stock check following the Goodison clash…

On The Up

Marouanne Fellaini
Pushed up in support of Nikaca Jelavic, the big Belgian was imperious and led the line with strength and composure. It’s not clear if David Moyes will persist with Fellaini in the role, with Steven Naismith and new signing Kevin Mirallas, the Everton boss clearly has options. However, this promises to be a big season for Fellaini and at 6.5 in the FPL and 4.7 in the Sky Sports Game, Fantasy managers may well be rethinking Steven Pienaar as the protagonist in Everton’s midfield ranks.

The Everton Defence
Moyes’ rearguard was defiant throughout and magnificent to a man. Leighton Baines delivered his first clean sheet of the season – he remains the luxury item in the Toffees back four but, on this form, a strong haul of clean sheets over the season could be in the offing to help justify the outlay.

David De Gea
While United struggled in attacking terms, De Gea stood firm against a first half blue tide, pulling off notable saves to keep the score deadlocked at the interval. With Anders Lindegaard breathing down his neck, the Spaniard has to produce. Tonight he was arguably United’s most impressive performer – he had to be.

Going Down

Wayne Rooney
Rooney was the danger man for United but Sir Alex Ferguson’s attacking players were far from potent. While they dominated possession and passed the ball well, they lacked a cutting edge and a direct threat. Rooney’s owners will go into the weekend clash with Fulham concerned that Robin Van Persie will be called upon to provide that, while Rooney retreats deep.

United’s Widemen
Ferguson appeared to allow his attacking players fluidity with Shinji Kawaga and Rooney interchanging up front or drifting deep to pick up the ball. The uncertainty surrounding Kawaga’s role and the likelihood of a Rooney/Van Persie pairing will cause concern. It appears we could see Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Kawaga competing for two starts in wide areas throughout the season.

Dilemma for GW2, current team is:

    Vorm, Cerny
Kompany, A Cole, Hangeland, Shawcross, Barnett
    Mata, Yaya, N’Zog, Noble, Britton
    Aguero, Torres, Graham

I feel I want to unload as many of Torres, Aguero (depending on news) and Mata. I had always planned Mata -> Bale/VDV in GW2, but with Aguero’s injury and no clarity on the Rooney/RVP debate (although I defs prefer RVP right now), I’m unsure how to proceed.

I have 1.5m in the bank, but would rather not have to sacrifice points or take my WC this early, but what do people think?

      JimmyDeemo - Sir Puntalot says:

I would do Aguero–>Rooney/RVP for this week, unless you hear otherwise. If you don’t want to take points hits then you have to be content with Mata unless you are happy to have 11.5m on the bench. Newcastle at Home isn’t a terrible match to have.

Fair enough, that was my initial reaction, so guess I was just looking for some confirmation if there’s no viable alternative. If I’ve scored 40 pts so far this week with the Chelsea game to go tomorrow, would you consider taking a points hit and if so, which other change(s) would you make?

Wenger selling to fergie was a masterstroke , by time united sort themselves out title chance will be gone.
Instead of buying Van Persie he should of gone for world class defensive midfielder or defender, and given Wellbeck Hernandez and Berbatov more of a role

This is true, the problems last year was full backs and midfield, the signs were there at Newcastle when the midfield got bossed, their strikers have always scored goals, van Persie will too but other teams will still get at them as last night showed.

He ignored their weaknesses from last season, shocking decision.

If Mancini buys some cover for his defence then it won’t even be close.

I would sure be tempted to, but if you look at that team you have 3 very good midfielders (Silva, Mata, Taraabt) who you’re judging too early.

If I were you, I’d just switch out Torres for Rooney or RVP. It’s still a good team and the results from the first week often mean very little in the grand scheme of things (though I do expect some performers, like Michu and Ivanovic, to have good seasons).

    JimmyDeemo - Sir Puntalot says:

Lost of prev. page, sorry for repost but would like some feedback:

Regardless of jerking knees and injuries, unless anything changes I appear to be in a bind; this would be my GW2 team.

    de Gea

    Clyne, Kompany, Vermaelen, Ivanovic

    Pienaar, Robson-Kanu, Kagawa, Bale

    Graham, Podolski

    Federici, Aguero, Beausejour, Demel

Now…I don’t overly like the look of that but with 0 in the bank (probably foolish of me) then I’m struggling to decide on the best move. I’d like to avoid hits, but seems that this early on one might be needed.

I could just drop down to Tevez from Aguero this week, and wait an see on Aguero’s prognosis before deciding if and where I should spend the freed up cash.

    Thoughts much appreciated.

Liverpool, for what its worth, had very good attacking stats but obviously failed to convert them into actual game points. Wigan had a lot of possession and attacking stats in the final third which suggests to me they are very much geared for attack…Swansea not only had high attacking stats but also a high conversion and West Ham (stats-wise) weren’t totally in control…Zab had very good attacking stats…

So for defenders, clean sheets and GW1 stats in play…consider that the clean sheet is a major doubt I would line your options up as: Zab, Clyne, Demel…in that order..

          So play Zab…

@DLL18…I see now…pretty average then but totally understandable if the BP concept is based on stats alone…

@Doosra…You’re totally right in saying he wasn’t all that solid but BPs are calculated differently now which means it’s not really down to the quality of the player rather than what he can produce stats-wise for a specific game. Chico missed the BPs because his shots off target hurt his overall stat perception…I was hoping to see something in Williams stats to maybe help indicate something and really all I can see is that he didn’t do anything to “hurt” his stats…anyway…

I’m sure i’ll be getting Hazard at some point but just not before he’s played his second DGW game and before an imminent blank – it’s a lot of money to tie up when we could just wait.
