Scout Scribbles – Laudrup Snaps Up Taylor Replacement

Swansea sign a new left-back as a replacement for the injured Neil Taylor. Abou Diaby is a worry for Arsenal after sustaining a muscle injury, Seb Larsson is keen to cement a central midfield role for Sunderland, while West Ham admit Andy Carroll is set to be sidelined for Saturday’s trip to Norwich:

Michael Laudrup’s search for a new left-back ended yesterday with the news that Dutch defender Dwight Tiendalli has signed for Swansea until the end of the season. The new boy spoke to the club’s official website upon completion of the move..

“I’m looking forward to working under Michael Laudrup, who is a massive name in football, and showing him what I have to offer. I’m sure I will fit in very well because I share the same philosophy as the club. Having started my career in Ajax’s Youth side, I see the style of play here is one that has a real Dutch and Spanish mix, and that will really suit me. I can’t wait to work hard in training and try to force myself into the starting XI.”

The move now raises real question marks over the acquisition of Ben Davies as a cut-price route into the Welsh club’s defence. With regular left-back Neil Taylor out for the season, Davies was pencilled in as a possible transfer in ahead of (EVE, RDG, WIG) in the next five Gameweeks but with Laudrup bringing in his own man, it’s a case of wait and see with this one. If Tiendalli can nail down a regular role, his price across the Fantasy games will be eagerly anticipated.

Still in the Swans’ camp and Laudrup has again expressed his surprise at the red card dished out to Chico in the 2-2 with Sunderland, admitting that both he and the player will need to adapt to English referees..

“I think if Chico made that challenge ten times, given the place where he was on the pitch, nine times he would get a yellow card with only one red.He knows that he went high with his leg, but I know he did not do it to hurt the opponent…Chico is aggressive, but that is like a lot of the players over here…Chico was shocked that he got sent off and then he was shocked again to get a three-game ban, because that’s different too…We are all learning every day, and that’s a good thing.”

Chico will be missing from Swansea’s next two league matches as he serves out his ban – opening the way for Alan Tate to slot into the defence as his likely replacement. Like Davies, Tate could tempt short-term investment – he is priced at 4.0 in the FPL, with Sky Sports making him available for just 3.6.

Abou Diaby is out of France’s game against Belarus later this evening. The national team coach, Didier Deschamps, admitted:

“Diaby took a bad shot and he has muscular discomfort. He is not free in his movements.”

The news is a real worry for Arsene Wenger, given the midfielder’s recent form. The opening three Gameweeks have quickly shown just what a fully-fit Diaby can bring to the Arsenal first XI, with Alex Song’s departure to Barcelona quickly forgotten. Given Diaby’s injury history, it’s impossible to speculate with any sort of certainty here – any possible absence is likely to benefit Aaron Ramsey or Francis Coquelin in the double-pivot alongside Mikel Arteta.

Wenger received some mixed news concerning his forwards yesterday – Theo Walcott is out of England’s game with Ukraine due to sickness, while Olivier Giroud is fit for France after recovering from a muscle problem. Yet to find the net this season, Giroud has been transferred by just over 1,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers ahead of a home game against Southampton, while Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski have received a combined 93,000 – highlighting just how little faith we have in Giroud right now. According to the Frenchman, it won’t be long before he’s amongst the goals:

“I’ve been freezing up a little bit just when I’ve been about to pull trigger and that’s exactly what happened in my first few matches for France. I’m not too worried about it, because I’ve been scoring in training and I feel pretty comfortable being a part of this team. I just need to not think about things too much, so that I feel as relaxed as possible when the time comes to stick the ball in the net.”

Paul Lambert has a selection dilemma at left-back on his hands for next Saturday’s home showdown against Swansea after summer signing from Middlesbrough Joe Bennett revealed he has returned to training. The Villa boss handed Eric Lichaj the chance to impress at Newcastle in Gameweek 3 but with Bennett recovering from an ankle knock, he may reassess the situation, with the midlands club still to register a clean sheet this season.

Jonny Evans has allayed any injury fears after earlier reports suggested he was a doubt for Northern Ireland’s match with Luxembourg this evening. The centre-half revealed he has shrugged off the ankle problem picked up early on against Russia on Friday:

“I have only played one reserve game for United this season after having the surgery in the summer so, to be honest, it was just good to get back on the pitch. But I felt my ankle after about five minutes. It was the same one I had surgery on in the summer but I got a heavier strap put on it and I was able to carry on for the second half. I was disappointed I felt pain so quickly in the game but if I am being honest, I always expected I would feel a little pain – just not that early. After a couple of painkillers it did feel a bit better and if anything I felt stronger as the game went on, but like I say, I had a heavier strapping on then.”

Evans’ return is likely to hand Sir Alex Ferguson a defensive quandary for the visit of Wigan next weekend. With Rio Ferdinand fit to start alongside Nemanja Vidic for the previous match at Southampton, United had a natural pair of centre-halves for the first time this term, having previously relied on Michael Carrick to drop back from midfield. Vidic, certainly, looks nailed-on as a first-choice option but Evans and Ferdinand could well cancel each other’s potential as Fantasy prospects if Ferguson decides to rotate them. Ferguson did, however, indicate that he was looking to establish stability in the centre of his defence, suggesting that Vidic and Ferdinand will be given the opportunity of sustained starts, injury permitting. The right-back position could still be profitable for Fantasy managers: Phil Jones and Chris Smalling both still sidelined, Rafael’s potential as a cheap route looks appealing, though it’s still unclear how much his manager rates his defensive qualities ahead of trips to (liv, new, che) in the next six.

Seb Larsson has admitted he is keen to establish himself in the heart of Sunderland’s midfield. The Swede has switched to a central position due to the arrival of Adam Johnson and is more than happy to continue there:

“I’ve really enjoyed it there. All three games so far I’ve featured there, the two Premier League games and in the cup. It just takes a bit of getting used to. I played there a lot when I was younger. But it’s a position that I will hopefully play a lot more. I think it can be fun. There’s a bit to learn about positioning and when to hold it a bit more rather than going forward. I’d like to see myself as being able to dictate the play rather than bombing on all the time.”

Larsson’s delivery from the flank was a real selling point from a Fantasy perspective and while a move away from a wide position should limit his potential for crosses, his set-piece duties came to the fore against Swansea last time round. With the predatory Steven Fletcher installed up front, Larsson still provided an assist for his 7% FPL owners, drawing him level with James McClean on eight points.

An article on West Ham’s official website indicates that Andy Carroll is unavailable for selection ahead of the club’s Gameweek 4 trip to Norwich. The club gave a couple of hints on the player’s problem with the following two comments..

“While the manager will have to make at least one change in the striking department…While Andy Carroll continues his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury….”

Both statements certainly indicate Carroll is out of the Canaries match – a real blow for Sam Allardyce, with Carlton Cole looking likely to be installed as the focal point in the Hammers’ 4-3-3. With nothing definitive on the length of injury, Allardyce will be desperate for a quick return for Carroll – the next six Gameweeks affords his side home games against Sunderland and Southampton and trips to Wigan and QPR. The Hammers could well be in a position to prosper, though whether Cole’s presence will have quite the same effect as Carroll’s is perhaps debatable.

With Fifa 13 being released, will everyone stop playing Fifa 12 online? I've always wondered about the lifespan of these things. One minute played by millions, the next minute there's a new one out and you might as well throw it in the bin.

I think they're not worth the full price tag. They tweak the mechanics every year, update the graphics and designs and then obviously update the squads and prices. Then they add a couple of new things and that's it, the core of the game is the exact same. Really a bit of a rip off imo, think they should be a lot cheaper.

Market forces ... everyone buys it at £40 and probably still would at £50.

I'll be unlikely to play Fifa 12 again after September..

    Ok, another tl;dr post ahead...

    In defence of Yaya:

There seems to be a growing schism between those who believe Yaya Toure represents a good fpl player (myself included) and those who believe that whilst excellent in real life, he isn't a viable fantasy option. This is my attempt to put forward an argument against the negative comments I've seen most often.

    - - - Argument against him #1 - He has overperformed so far.

Really? You think? You mean he isn't going to finish the season with 26 goals, 13 assists and 76 bonus points? Aw 🙁

Seriously though, any player who has done well so far has essentially overperformed. You think the Arsenal defence will get 38 clean sheets? Hazard will get 76 assists? Tevez will get a goal and an assist every game? Of course not. Another way to look at this though is to say that these players are 'on form' which can surely only be a good thing and warrants investment.

    - - - Argument against him #2 - £8m is too much for a defensive midfielder.

Yes, yes it is. Luckily Yaya isn't a defensive midfielder (for clarification see Cheik Tiote, Lucas, etc.) Granted, he isn't an out and out attacking midfielder either but those aren't the only two possibilities. He's a box to box central midfielder who will frequently get into dangerous positions throughout the season, which brings me onto...

    - - - Argument against him #3 - His shot conversion is too high and you can't expect corners to keep dropping to him every game.

Surprisingly I don't (although I do think it will continue to happen occasionally), but the fact he's getting in those positions and converting those chances is surely a good thing. Try looking upon these 'lucky'/'freak' goals as nice little bonuses on top of the goals we'll all agree he genuinely earned - feels better doesn't it?

    - - - Arguments in favour

He's nailed on in the Man City midfield - you simply can't say this about anyone else and it's hard to overstate the importance of this. Knowing your players from the big teams are going to be in the starting line up week in week out is a huge weight off your mind.

He plays the full 90 minutes almost every week. Barring injuries (which are infrequent - another plus) he pretty much always plays the whole match. No being hauled off in the 59th minute, no being rested with the game won, maximum game time means maximum point scoring chances.

He's a bonus magnet. 15 baps in each of his previous 2 seasons, 6 already this season - the system loves Yaya.

However, I think the most compelling argument I can present in favour of Yaya as a fantasy player is to look at the empirical evidence:
    2010/11 - 36 games played, 146 points (avg 4.1 points per game)
    2011/12 - 32 games played, 139 points (4.3 ppg)
2012/13 - he's already ahead of the curve this season and so likely to outperform these figures.

    For comparison purposes:
    Ben Arfa £7.5m (3.8 ppg)
    Arteta £8.0m (4.4 ppg)
    Sessegnon £8.0m (4.4 ppg)
    Nasri £8.5m (4.3 ppg)
    Lampard £9.0m (4.6 ppg)
    Walcott £9.0m (4.8 ppg)
    Gerrard £9.5m(4.2 ppg)

Based on this, Yaya has been priced fairly based upon previous seasons and has started off well this year - why the hate people?

Oh, and well done if you managed to make it all the way through this mini-essay, I didn't really intend to write this much to start with! 🙂

He is the rope-a-dope king. He has perfected this to buy himself space on the pitch limping around, pretending to look gassed, and spraying the ball innocuously he is the best at picking his spots. The man knows how to play and to think because of his positioning he won't have a go is a bit silly. Lets not get this to Raylor-state of Haterade...please.

Now that I have read it, I disagree with the way you have countered pt1, and pt3.

Of course, he is overperformed this season, but when we say that, we actually mean that he is simply been lucky to get those points. On another day, he could easily end up with 2pts, and I feel that's a more likely case.

Argument no 3 - Which position are you talking about, he was in the box that's all. Hardly a favorable position.

I just don't fancy a player who will spend a lot of time in the defensive midfield when there are so many better options available - Caz, Kag/Valencia, Michu, B.Arfa, Haz who are much bent on attacking than him

I agree with the points in favour though.

Fair enough, that's what I mean about treating those goals as a bonus though and his 'real' points will come in addition to those. If you want to talk about lucky chances look no further than Michu - against semi-competent defenders he would have got far less points. They still count though 😉

Here is a small statistical analasys of Yaya and why I am one of the people who will think he will drop off in points:

Yaya Toure- Unless you are expecting him suddenly to play more forward than last season than look out for that drop off, especially once Silva returns to form-which should happen soon.

        GW1-3: Shots taken:6 Goals scored:2
        GW1-3: Key passes made:9 Assists made:1
Normal rate of shot conversion: 2 shots per game, 10.7 shots per goal
Normal rate of key pass conversion: 1.7 key passes per game 9.066 key passes per assist

That means he was a bargain and people who got him GW1 predicted his scoring run well. But if you are wildcarding now I see no reason in having him at all.

I am actually not that big of a hater and I am not telling anyone to get rid, or panic with him. Just that there is no need to get him in now, or work him into your WC

Disgree completely. He is more of a high volume Walters or Lampard. Think of him as a joker in the pack. Always capable of sccoring, often against the run of play.

yes, over 8.0 for a non OOP mf is a lot of cash and it's not an easy decision. He's no modric though. Yaya is potentially the best player in the league with a football brain to match his physique. His potential upside is monstrously consistent.

He's also a decent pick if, like me, you are going without MC defense.

Ofcourse they dont work that way as simple as that, but they are a good indication, the stronger this indicator gets the stronger the chance of a player dropping off. And I agree with Michu the man has overperformed no one will continue to score with every shot on target, Hazard actually has only overperformed with his penalty earnings. Other stats are in line with his general ability.

However, and this is something you seem to discount, I'd much rather play the form and fixtures with a 6.0+6.5 midfielder who is on fire on the hope of getting two lots of explosive scores than just stick with Yaya and Guthrie all season long.

That's a fair point, but by the same logic you could say that about any of the big players, if I could spot the lower priced players who were about to go on a hot streak I'd be a much better manager than I am! 😉

Maybe a good reason why Yaya is getting more points and getting forward more right now is Aguero's absence. There's more incentive for Mancini to push Yaya up the pitch to get him goals. He knows Yaya is capable but might stop doing this so much with Aguero back.

I think a major mistake people make in this game is predicting players coming in and out of form. Bale and silva should come back into form soon. Yaya will not be in form soon! IMO its best to wait till it happens and then make the change.

Yup, I'm seriously regretting hanging onto my WC at the moment as my team is missing some key players - I'm having to hope for some pretty serious swings in form or I'm going to get left behind.

I’m happy sticking with Yaya for the moment. He pulled 139 points last season, 143 the season before, and based on his current showing, will pull the same if not more this time around.

You tell me of a known quantity (none PL fledgling) midfielder with average stats like his for less than 9M?

    ITK 😎

Long term absentees Jack Wilshere, Emmanuel Frimpong, Tomas Rosicky and Bacary Sagna all trained yesterday morning, doing fitness work AND ball work which is fantastic news. They will continue their light training this morning.

Jack is expected to join in with full training at some point next week along with Frimpong, whilst Sagna and Rosicky are slightly behind. The latter two are expected to return to full training the following week.

All the long term absentees will need time to get up to speed, I'd say about 10 days/2weeks of full training to get some match fitness and then most importantly they will need games.

Wojciech Szczesny has recovered from his rib injury and joined in with training yesterday; he should be available for Saturday. Meanwhile, Theo Walcott has withdrawn from the England squad with Illness. First signs are he'll be OK for Saturday, expecting more concrete news on him as the week progresses.

Will have an update on Diaby's fitness either later today or tomorrow, after he has been assessed. No real concern at the moment.

                    WC team

                    Begovic Foster
                    Hughes Clyne Demel Cuellar Baines
                    Snodgrass Cazorla Hazard Michu Maloney
                    RVP Jelavic Tevez

It's a team with 7 big hitters. I really want Snodgrass and Maloney in front 8 despite fixures. Both play fantastic and rotate well.
Foster- Begovic, Hughes-Clyne and Demel-Cuellar also rotate perfectly in defence. What do you think?

Looks great. Personally, i wouldn't have Jelevic, especially as you have Baines. Yes he'll get goals but is he worth 2.5m more than Lambert? 1.5m more than Fletcher? 1.6m more than Berbatov? That is the difference between having a budget defender and a big hitter or 2 budget defenders and 2 mid priced defenders.

Would you play Lambert, Fletcher and Berbatov every single game? I wouldn't. That's why I have Jelly and think to rotate mildfilders.

Yep, i would play them three every game, Berba is the only doubt with Fulhams away form. But it's your call.

I wouldn't rotate Morrison, play him every week for the next few and stick Guthrie on the bench to free up an extra 0.6

Whats the story with Pienaar? Was the injury he picked up before going with SA on internationals a smokescreen from Moyes? Could do with him playing with Kagawa likely out..

A fairly minor knock apparently, plenty are interpreting it as an excuse to miss the international fixtures, seems very likely to be fit.

Just saw some pre season games with him and he looked so poor it made me vomit a bit. He also got arrested for dangerous driving or something so could be completely out of favor, but I dont know.

Technically he's probably better than Gervinho on the LW...Gervinho just tries to jailbreak outside his defender on the left, Santos actually looks to set up triangles and drifts inside and sets up Gibbs much better on overlaps.

Yeah he's looked positionally illiterate, I guess that winger bug has bitten him and he seems almost impossible to play in a back four against anyone better than Millwall. Bould may not want to put him out there until they ship a goal.

One would assume so. Gibbs seems to be first-choice for league games so it would be logical to assume that Santos will start some CL matches.

Coould be a good shout. He's healthy, wenger brought him on late in Liverpool for an attacker. He will definitely give him a run in CL.

I wont get him in for sure, that would just mean I will have to get rid of Gibbs. Glad that the arsenal game is on the first day, so we can see who plays

UCL have done some interesting choices all round, just discussed it earlier. I did a small research post on all budget options, discovered olympiacos have 3 OOP defenders, benfica have a striker playing RB 😀
Vidal for Juve is a defender while he actually is a very attacking wing player.

I read your article on the Council website. Well done! Definitely gives some added insight to some leagues I'm not too familiar with!

Who are the 3 Olympiacos OOP players? Have Holebas at the moment

Looks excellent, question marks over the Newcastle defence at the moment though - Simpson out, Krul and Coloccini doubts makes Saylor a worse pick than he would have been otherwise. I'm guessing you don't have the cash to change him to Gibbs?

Unfortunately my dream didn't extend to the other goalscorers, or who got the assists.

I suspect that to p1ss on my chips Michu (who I don't have) bagged both other goals and got the assist for Dyer (who I do have), whilst Graham of course (who I also have) as usual played very well but did feck all of FPL value!

I had a dream during the summer that Ivanovic scored in Chelsea's first game. I had to get him in after that because on the offchance he did score I'd never forgive myself. As it happened he scored twice in the first gameweek and I wish I'd trusted my dream and captained him. True story.

I don't suggest that our dreams have paranormal access to the future. I just think that you'll be more upset if you don't take a gamble on it and it turns out true than if you do take a gamble and it doesn't.

The 2 goals from Villa just made that lose all credibility, sorry...as much as I would like it to happen, the only way it would is if some off-brand player like Lichaj scored one of them.

I'm wrestling with that one myself - the stats I've been looking at from last season make it extremely difficult to choose but I think I'm going to go for Foster.

Mata hasn't been selected for the Spain squad for the international break.
Tonight, they are away in Georgia.

Fully rested Mata against a poor QPR defence = points bonanza

Yes. I thought Frank was meant to be a holding midfielder nowadays...

Surely as an attacking midfielder, Mata must be in line for some FPL points over the next few games?

I'm keeping a close eye on Mata.

I think it is too early to discount him as a major FPL force this season, and as I don't own Hazard, and with his price soaring, Mata may just become a target for me when I look to jump off Kagawa next week - the £1m saved between Mata and hazard could come in very handy indeed.

I have 1 FT No WC 🙁 What should I do??? 🙁 I dont really mind taking a hit since my team's pretty bad but not too much though 🙂

                    My Team:
                    Vorm (Cerny)
Williams Kompany Ivanovic (Mc Cartney Baker)
                    Hazard Toure Allen Britton (Guthrie)
                    Tevez RVP Ba

                    Im thinking of:
                    Ba >> Fletcher
and Maybe getting rid of Allen/Britton/Kompany

As RVP will have played two internationals in 5 days, which involved a great deal of travelling & Man Utd have their first CL game next week, followed by a trip to Anfield...

How many minutes will RVP play at home to Wigan this weekend?

If Wigan is an easy game, he may play no minutes, as Fergie needs him, with Rooney injured.

If Wigan is a hard game, RVP may not score.

you could say something about RVP not atack him for his gf

it's just his opinion about RVP
