Moneyball – Ricardo Vaz Te

In a new series of articles for members, we explore those unfashionable, unwanted and unexciting players who don’t necessarily come with You Tube clips or Armani ads but deliver that all important quantity which drives the “Moneyball” strategy: comparative value.

The term “Moneyball” found its way across the Atlantic for many with the arrival of John Henry, whose Fenway Sports Group added Liverpool to their holdings list alongside Henry’s great pride: the Boston Red Sox. Henry’s Red Sox failed in a bid to hire Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A’s and chief proponent of the so-called Moneyball strategy but, using Beane’s approach to player acquisitions, went on to deliver their first championship in 86 years. Henry’s attempts to replicate his success on Mersyeside by applying certain principles to player analysis under Damien Comolli failed to have the desired effect, however.

Despite popular opinion, the lessons of Moneyball do not start and end with saving money or looking for one particular attribute in players, but rather looking for players discarded by the wider market, either because they succeed in an uncommon way or because they do so in a particularly unfashionable manner.

Given that most Fantasy managers spend a large portion of our money on just a handful of players, we, too, are forced to invest for value at the bottom end of our squad and in that arena we have to accept imperfection if we’re going to achieve success. Finding the right assets to fill the budget gaps in our squads can prove vital; the Moneyball series is here to help – to investigate the lower end market and attempt to find diamonds in the rough.

Using the Moneyball concept and the data available to our Members, we’ll attempt to identify and analyse players who perhaps appear “imperfect” solutions but, in fact, offer strong potential for those with limited funds.

    Sorry, lost on last page.

Isn’t it risky to invest in Cazorla considering AFC’s run of fixtures ? After this GW, they play City, Chelsea, away to Norwich and West Ham in the next 4, without even mentioning the Champions League coming up.
    Thoughts ?

Wouldnt go as far as world class just yet. Hes clearly proven quality, but if players of his standard/record are world class, then i guess we`d have numbers in the hundreds of world class players, and tbh we dont

seriously? over next 6 (according to FFS' metrics) ARS' fixtures are 30% easier than MCY's. add to that really no one else potentially pulling the strings in ARS' midfield (whereas yaya is competing with silva, nasri, sinclair and someone else i'm forgetting and playing behind a front two instead of in support of a lone frontman), and saving 1m on yaya isn't exactly going to reduce stress levels come game time.

to be a bit more thorough in response:

pretty much everything is running through him at this point, much as it did in the past for cesc. given the kinds of hauls that cesc pulled down when fit, and assuming giroud starts firing and podolski doesn't lose the taste (both safe assumptions, i'd say), regardless of fixtures there will be goals, and santi's odds-on to be involved in them.

Tony Hibbert has never scored a prem goal ever and so it is highly unlikely that he will ever rack up a giant score.

When you say that any defence can get you 30 points, thats not quite true. Hangeland, Ivanovic and Zabaleta have been known for getting big points at some point during their prem careers, but they are also known for frustrating as well.

    1. Moneyball is one of my favorite books ever. It is a must-read for sports fans.

    2. Arsene Wenger has had the moneyball approach for years - it is the recipe for Arsenal's success, and the reason why they have been able to stay competitive whilst financing a new stadium without an influx of oil money etc.

Moneyball is my favourite book too. I was surprised they were making a movie but it worked well in the end.

I think Wenger has some facets of Beane's approach as he does tend to buy less orthodox players than his richer competitors, though their 'weakness' is nearly always the fact they are unproven or very young rather than anything else.

I'd suggest that Allardyce during his time at Bolton might be the manager most closely related to what the A's have done in baseball. Basically everyone in that side was cast off by other teams for varied reasons from age (Djorkaeff, Okocha, Hierro), appearance and style (Davies) or attitude (Diouf, Anelka) . He also led the way with the development of quite a bit of statistical analysis as well as using sports psychologists, alternative treatments and such. In short, anything he could afford which might give him an edge over his richer competitors. Looking beyond just "he uses stats", that is the essence of what Beane has achieved and Big Sam had comparable success with an equally comparable budget.

    3. If you look back 20 years from now the success of the strategy will be all too apparent - assuming of course Arsenal continue to use it and don't hire some numpty who needs a ton of oil money or similar to be competitive

    4. Man Utd were the only self-sustaining mega-club in the UK, Arsenal have become one.

true. but our champions league qualification run is a huge testimony to the consistency that can be achieved with a £45m net spend in a decade (whilst financing a new stadium). Pretty impressive stuff!

Wenger would be an interesting subject for a book like this. Lewis is a superb story teller, which really separates Moneyball from the pack when it comes to sabremetrics in baseball. I know success is ultimately measured in trophies but even the anti-Arsenal crowd have to concede that Wenger has worked wonders in several areas of the game including the transfer market and player development. The Oakland As haven't won a World Series under Beane either but they have been competitive more often than not with $30-50m payrolls against teams spending $200+. It's too simplistic to say that manager Xis better because he won a title, stripping all context out of the argument.

Let me know if Michael Lewis ever gets back to you 🙂

You've misunderstood the word 'banter', I think - it doesn't mean reasoned argument 😉

Plus, Arsenal get 4 attempts at a trophy each season, compared to Oakland's 1.

baseball teams are sheltered by the franchise system and the worst team have the best access to young talent. In other words it is not a truly competitve market place. What makes Wenger's achievement all the more impressive is that he has had to do it despite being priced out by the silly money being pumped into the game.

I've heard/read from two sources that Jon Obi Mikel is playing really attacking this season so far, not that I would ever consider him as an FPL candidate for my team but this seems really strange as they have this whole wealth of attacking options...it doesn't make sense to me why he would be bombing forward at all. Maybe Chelsea are setting up to play 'full team counter attacks' hence why the likes of Ivanovic have bagged goals so far..

To all those doubting / hating on Giroud, I happened upon this in an article talking about him:

"It is also very pertinent to note that all of Arsenal’s recent goalscoring legends took their time getting off the mark. Thierry Henry, a compatriot of Giroud went eight games without a goal before he finally opened his account for Arsenal. And we all know how that story ended. There is also a huge significance in Arsenal’s game against Southampton. Wright, Bergkamp, Henry and van Persie all scored their first Arsenal goals against Soton. There is hope yet."

Clearly a brace is in order.
