The Watchlist – Dimitar Berbatov

There can be no greater proof of Dimitar Berbatov’s commitment to the Fulham cause than the sight earlier this month of the Bulgarian resplendent in oxygen mask undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy in a bid to recover from a muscle injury.

Sadly, this intense form of therapy was not quite enough to ensure he was fit to face Southampton in Gameweek 7 but with Martin Jol admitting Berbatov was close to making the squad, the signs are strong that he should make a full recovery to lead the line for Villa’s visit to the Cottage in Gameweek 8.

Since signing for Fulham on a two-year deal at the end of the summer transfer window, experienced Fantasy managers have been keeping a close eye on Berbatov’s performances. During his time at Spurs and United, the maverick Bulgarian was not just a key Fantasy asset, but a game changer at times, capable of 20+ point hauls, regardless of opponent, to propel savvy Fantasy managers up their mini-leagues with gusto.

His hat-trick for Tottenham in the London side’s 6-4 demolition of Reading in December 2007 proved to be the first of five in England’s top-flight. Berbatov became the first Man United player to bag three against Liverpool for 64 years during the Red Devils’ 3-2 victory over their bitter North West rivals back in September 2010.

Later in that golden boot winning season, he cemented his credentials as one of the Premier League’s greats with an incredible five-goal haul as United hammered Blackburn 7-1 at Old Trafford. More was to come during 2011, a year which started and ended with a hat-trick. Berbatov struck three times in a 5-0 home win against Birmingham City in January and in the Boxing Day home clash with Wigan, which the Red Devils won by the same margin.

Despite these impressive hauls, Berbatov spent long periods of his United career on the bench, which has seen his starting price plummet this season to just 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game. However, in stark contrast to his final months at Old Trafford, Berbatov finds himself as very much a wanted man, with Jol declaring last month:

“The big difference for him (Berbatov) is that he knows, if he is fit, then he will play a lot of games. He’s an important part of our set-up, of course. He’s probably our biggest player. At Man United, which of course is a bigger club, it was maybe different in the last year or so.”

Judging by his two starts at Fulham so far this season, not only has the 31-year-old retained his keen eye for goal but he is emerging as the main attacking focal point of the team, who seemingly have one mission; get the ball to the Berbatov and let him do the rest. During his first start, against West Brom at home, the Bulgarian scored twice and achieved maximum bonus points in the FPL game, where he also accrued 13 points.

He failed to score during his second start, away to Wigan the next week, but managed an eight point haul in the FPL game with an assist and another maximum bonus point haul. His goal threat and team mates’ zeal to target Berbatov in the penalty box ensured he received an EA Sport Index score of 43 in each of those games, an indication that more goals and bonus points are set to follow.

While their home form under Jol continues to appeal, the West Londoners have also proved hardier foes on the road; they have found the net six times over four matches on their travels, already half their total number of away goals for the previous campaign. With fixtures (AVL, rea, EVE, ars, SUN), price, goal threat and a pedigree that places Berbatov among the Premier League’s greatest ever strikers, he may soon become a player that is impossible to ignore.

Fellaini told evertonfc.com: "As you have probably seen and heard I am currently suffering from a knee injury. Fortunately is is not too serious but I will have to miss the two games with Belgium.

"I am hoping to be back playing for Everton as soon as possible.

"I am extremely disappointed and I now have to rest in order to get back to full fitness so I can help the team with some important games coming up."

      repost:

This is a growing trend, isn’t it?!

Players not willing OR clubs telling them not to go and risk themselves in the internationals. I don’t mind it, don’t get me wrong. Just an observation. Just a little puzzled if players don’t rate playing for their country…

            True.
I don't think many players feign injuries for qualifiers, though, as is the case with Fellaini. For friendlies, maybe. But yeah, happening very frequently these days.

Feigning is such a loaded word. Fellaini has been a beast and plays regularly for Belgium - some federations have "an understanding" with the clubs re: overuse. Some don't or they lie.

Best not to blame players / clubs if an issue is mutually accepted.

        Is DOOSRA about?

This UEFA Your The Boss thing you play - I've signed up and just had my first match (a 1-1 draw). I was reading the 'Help' section on strategy and it says the following:

"Here it is important to employ your tactics which counteract those of your opponent. In principle the following applies: attacking beats defensive, defensive beats balanced and balanced beats attacking. Hint: Analysing your opponent's tactics will help you make your choice."

My question to you is - how do you analyse your opponent's tactics? I've tried looking everywhere but can find no way to do so. Am I being stupid?

Really tough. If I had transfers to burn (i.e. little pressing or ideas for transfers elsewhere) I think I'd be tempted to do Ba > Berbatov for the next 2 - and if he hasn't won you over by then, switch back to Ba for the best part of Newcastle's run of nice fixtures. If you could do it all for free that would be pretty sweet IMO. Maybe captaining the Casual one vs. AVL

Yeah I have Kacka too, and whenever I draft Berbatov in (tinkering) I think, well then I'd need to get rid of Kacka. But to be honest my 5th choice mid hasn't come into play for so long, it's not pressing at all.

I know. I was hasty before and got rid of Tevez for Ba. He went on to score 2 in that gw. Still it's awful to watch City play, since i have none of them.

The trio up top is pretty good though. Gutted Berba didn't play gw6-7. Kept him despite the loss in value.

            Foster
            Baines / Gibbs / Cueller
            Bale / Mata / Cazorla / Pienaar
            Berbatov / RVP / Ba

Thats pretty much the team I'm wildcarding to, though maybe Silva for Mata or upgrade defence a little. I'm still tinkering. Good team.

Thanks! Yeah I'd love to have Silva in there too but Mata was just too tempting at that price (£8.8m) given his current form. Had to take a few hits to get it but feels really solid now and won't be needing to make any major changes for a while unless injuries kick-in.

When are you planning on wild-carding?

Done. Been planning on doing it this gw, and though I probably should have waited in retrospect, I couldn't.

                  Feels wonderfully liberating.

yes, but still cant find another good replacement atm. Nolan only has 2 good games next time, Walters is playing as RW.

Besides Man City(a) Michu's fixtures aren't that bad:
WIG, mci, CHE, sot, new, LIV, WBA, ars, NOR
He has 2 more goals than any other midfielder. I see 3 or 4 goals scored by him in those fixtures.

I know we began talking about this yesterday but I genuinely believe that Berba can outscore RVP this year.

That move is tempting me a lot. Especially as I'd end up with a midfield of Silva/Valencia Bale Hazard Cazorla which is quite tasty.

That is my main goal. If RvP doesn´t go goal crazy then the value spent on expensive mids will cover his points and more.. hauls from Bale and Cazorla I don´t want to miss...

I think if I did it, it would be on a 3 week trial basis where I wouldn't spend the money, but keep it in case I want to get him back for that nice run from gw11. I suppose then I have to think about the loss I'd make as I had him from like gw2

                          I am, this week Podolski > Giroud(c)
But I have 2 FTs and I've wanted Berbs since he signed.

at the expense of RVP? man, i understand the overwhelming berba love atm, (attacking focal ponit, penalty duties, etc.) ..but ask yourself this, what if RVP scores a brace against Stoke, and replicate his Arsenal form against Chelsea, and in the good run of fixtures (GW11 onwards)? i wudn't do it, if i were u.

Yeah - but if I'm going to do a 3 week punt then Stoke, Chelsea, Arsenal - while not in AMAZING form - would be the time to do it. Not saying I am going to do it, but the risk reward is about as strongly in favour of doing it as it's ever likely to be.

Defence is in tatters apart from Baines atm - Demel, Clark, Davies, Gorkss. So, I could do with generating some cash ... It sure is tempting!

There's a shorter version of this article that simply reads "Berb is the word."

Berb and Santi are top of my shopping list, may get one, may get both. Will certainly captain one of them in Gwk 8. Waiting on international injuries before I decide what to do, but more than happy to take a hit to get Berb and Santi in. Berb, as I remembered, is one of only a few players capable of multiple hattricks in a season. A 20 + haul from the bulgarian is on the horizon I can feel it in my bones.

Big fan too, but multiple hattricks are more an argument for Man Utd's chance creation aren't they? Which for me would be an argument to keep Van Persie!

Berb has also scored a hattrick for Spurs and the Bulgarian national side. He's hattrickadabidozy.

The thing about Berb is that he is one of a number of great attacking options, all with merit all with a flaw. Ba has some good fixtures coming up and is on form so I can't see the logic in swapping for anyone.

With RVP however, he has the form, he plays for an attacking side, but fixtures are not great and crucially he costs 13.5m or so, yet is likely to be on a par with Berb, Ba and Jelavic for points.

I have RVP but can't bring myself to dump him, but logically dumping him has merit. Have a look at the top ten in the worlds' teams and there are many without RVP.

Not sure what you're team value is but I've found it's possible to have this team with Berbs and RVP...

                            My current team:
                            Foster
                            Baines / Gibbs / Cueller
                            Bale / Mata / Cazorla / Pienaar
                            Berbatov / RVP / Ba
Subs: Begovic / Sterling / Nelsen / Demel

                        Arsenals Fixtures from GW8-21.

I count two tricky fixtures, from an attacking perspective.

Giroud, stop staring at me like that with your fanciful French eyes, I have an efficient German in my team.

But if he fails, we have a date for GW11.

Yes. 3 weeks is now "training to come back". That is a big difference imo.

It's still all smoke and mirrors. Berb would feel right at home.

No not really. Just allays fears that it will be any sort of long-term injury. My interpretation of the original news was out of internationals, QPR and maybe Liverpool, his quotes suggest QPR is a possibility.

                        All guess work though.

I would not make that move unless he starts a game and it was a broken leg so could brought back slowly like Valencia was last year- starting off with Cup and CL games. Broken leg is no joke and I think for a while Jenkinson will be better than him because of the lack of match fitness.

I suddenly feel like doing an RMT. I see a point doing these only during a WC or before the season starts but what the hell.

Looking good- I personally dont like Yaya, but I quess there is no rush in getting rid of him.

After getting rid of Yaya, I'm now tempted to get him back in. Scared not to have city cover, he's nailed on, tends to provide reasonable returns and is that much cheaper than Silva. He just sits a little too deep for too much of any game.

He is the player I hate the most- as you have to play him every game, you can never captain him. And I think he is too expensive for that, and at a time when you would want 3 City players he would be too expensive.

Just mucking about with the old player list I found in my cupboard...

This team was entirely possible at the beginning of the season for exactly 100m and could have had over 450pts even without captaincy or a single transfer...

                            Baines Ivanovic Rafael Wilson Demel
                            Hazard Bale Cazorla Michu Pienaar
                            Tevez Ba Lambert

Amazing huh? Even now it still looks good...

I had 5 of those from the beginning, and now own 7. A further 2 (the 2 Stokies) are now targets. I'm on 428 and my captaining has been 'so-so'.

Berbs has a tricky enough run after the next 2 games:
EVE, ars, SUN, sto, che, TOT

Thank you, Pjomara. That's rather cooled my boots. That is a horrendous run of fixtures for sure. 4 possession teams in there where he won't see a lot of the ball. Plus SUN and Stoke strong defences. Boots = cooled.
