The Watchlist – Dimitar Berbatov

There can be no greater proof of Dimitar Berbatov’s commitment to the Fulham cause than the sight earlier this month of the Bulgarian resplendent in oxygen mask undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy in a bid to recover from a muscle injury.

Sadly, this intense form of therapy was not quite enough to ensure he was fit to face Southampton in Gameweek 7 but with Martin Jol admitting Berbatov was close to making the squad, the signs are strong that he should make a full recovery to lead the line for Villa’s visit to the Cottage in Gameweek 8.

Since signing for Fulham on a two-year deal at the end of the summer transfer window, experienced Fantasy managers have been keeping a close eye on Berbatov’s performances. During his time at Spurs and United, the maverick Bulgarian was not just a key Fantasy asset, but a game changer at times, capable of 20+ point hauls, regardless of opponent, to propel savvy Fantasy managers up their mini-leagues with gusto.

His hat-trick for Tottenham in the London side’s 6-4 demolition of Reading in December 2007 proved to be the first of five in England’s top-flight. Berbatov became the first Man United player to bag three against Liverpool for 64 years during the Red Devils’ 3-2 victory over their bitter North West rivals back in September 2010.

Later in that golden boot winning season, he cemented his credentials as one of the Premier League’s greats with an incredible five-goal haul as United hammered Blackburn 7-1 at Old Trafford. More was to come during 2011, a year which started and ended with a hat-trick. Berbatov struck three times in a 5-0 home win against Birmingham City in January and in the Boxing Day home clash with Wigan, which the Red Devils won by the same margin.

Despite these impressive hauls, Berbatov spent long periods of his United career on the bench, which has seen his starting price plummet this season to just 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game. However, in stark contrast to his final months at Old Trafford, Berbatov finds himself as very much a wanted man, with Jol declaring last month:

“The big difference for him (Berbatov) is that he knows, if he is fit, then he will play a lot of games. He’s an important part of our set-up, of course. He’s probably our biggest player. At Man United, which of course is a bigger club, it was maybe different in the last year or so.”

Judging by his two starts at Fulham so far this season, not only has the 31-year-old retained his keen eye for goal but he is emerging as the main attacking focal point of the team, who seemingly have one mission; get the ball to the Berbatov and let him do the rest. During his first start, against West Brom at home, the Bulgarian scored twice and achieved maximum bonus points in the FPL game, where he also accrued 13 points.

He failed to score during his second start, away to Wigan the next week, but managed an eight point haul in the FPL game with an assist and another maximum bonus point haul. His goal threat and team mates’ zeal to target Berbatov in the penalty box ensured he received an EA Sport Index score of 43 in each of those games, an indication that more goals and bonus points are set to follow.

While their home form under Jol continues to appeal, the West Londoners have also proved hardier foes on the road; they have found the net six times over four matches on their travels, already half their total number of away goals for the previous campaign. With fixtures (AVL, rea, EVE, ars, SUN), price, goal threat and a pedigree that places Berbatov among the Premier League’s greatest ever strikers, he may soon become a player that is impossible to ignore.

Repost from earlier that you must've missed 😉

      Is DOOSRA about?

This UEFA Your The Boss thing you play – I’ve signed up and just had my first match (a 1-1 draw). I was reading the ‘Help’ section on strategy and it says the following:

“Here it is important to employ your tactics which counteract those of your opponent. In principle the following applies: attacking beats defensive, defensive beats balanced and balanced beats attacking. Hint: Analysing your opponent’s tactics will help you make your choice.”

My question to you is – how do you analyse your opponent’s tactics? I’ve tried looking everywhere but can find no way to do so. Am I being stupid?

Click on fixtures. You have only one. Click on the following week. Who are you playing? What did they achieve this week?

Conserve your whistle points, and use them wisely. Pace, passing, concentration and creativity are more important than they first appear. Yoga is a very useful tool ...

As in real life, I think it's too early to look at that. The fixtures haven't evened themselves out enough. For example, there are lots of people who captained Suarez the week before last at the very top - so essentially there off the back of a hattrick.

Might have to analyse which rankings have which players to determine which players are must haves 😛

We could do this for 500 players yeah? 😀

Ha .. yeah I mean, I'd say the sample size of 7 weeks is too small, really.

The game is about being proactive, rather than reactive so by that stretch, a stat like that wouldn't deter me from owning RVP. That said, if he doesn't fire vs Stoke, I'll be tempted to offload.

After the next 2 fixtures, lots of strikers have much better fixtures than Berbs:
    Berbs:
EVE, ars, SUN, sto, che, TOT

    Crouch:
nor, QPR, whm, FUL, NEW, wba

    Ba:
liv, WHM, SWA, sot, sto, WIG

    Lambert:

Very quick question, if someone gives me a positive answer I may jizz myself..;)

    I have

    Foster,

    Zabaleta, Baines, Cuellar,

    Nolan, Michu, Cazorla, Bale

    Suarez, Podolski, Ba

    Begovic, Fellaini, Figueroa, Gunter

Nothing in the bank and 1 free transfer.

I'm 0.2 off doing Pod to Berba and Fellaini to Mata for a -4 hit.

Now am I wrong in saying that Berba looks likely to drop to 6.9 over the break and ill make the other 0.1 in rises?

    Warm my cockles someone.

Number one has had a few top 10,000 finishes. Peaked at 1,802

Number two finished 26,000th ish last season...his first ever season so that's pretty good.

its all about timing RVP is gd question is when to get him in GW11-13 will be keep matches for RVP as nor/avl/qpr......3 of worst teams

so do u ride the form guide until then & leave spair cash or do as Mark is doing ply the long term game

those who will win will ride the form game all season thats how u win but most of us aiming for top 10k need to ply conservative long game

Average position is a lie, every time he drops back for a corner the average position takes a hit. Take this for example: Suppose a player were to play one half on the right wing and the other half on the left wing the average position would show him playing in the centre.....

It looks good, but not convinced it confirms that RVP is not needed, just a bit of a different strategy,

      My team is

      Foster, Bego
      Baines, Rafael, Demel, Davies, Gorks
      Bale, Cazorla, Fellaini, Ramirez, Sterling
      RVP, Aguero, Berbatov

Without Fellaini, Ramirez injures I was quite happy with that.

I know there's quite a few Maloney owners on here.

What is the reckoning on his plus points. Currently trying to compare him to Kightly.

They will be a Ramirez replacement, but playing on rotation with Sterling (rather than have Sterling 1st sub).

Would mean mainly looking at GW9, GW11 and GW14

    Maloney- WHM. WBA, MCY

    Kightly- SUN, QPR, NEW

I've used comparison and has Maloney edging it on overall ICT, but Kightly is more of a goal threat but plays a lot deeper and sees a lot less of the ball.

Stats only get you so far and must admit I haven't seen much of either of them this year.

If he is keeping Etherington out, he must be something! 🙂

I didn't even realise it was Etherington he was keeping out. I thought he played on the right.....

Clearly need to do more research 😀

no as SAF will want to boost goal diff after last season & perfect games to do so!

I've still got him. May even keep him. But I'm more scared that RVP won't play in those easy games and therefore not confident enough to captain him. Feel much happier with RVP against Arsenal for example.

Dont think he will be played against arsenal though. SAF may look to protect him!

He's not a figure of hate in the same way Rooney is at Everton. Also he knows Verm, Mert and Gibbs's game inside out. They know his as well...but I would argue RVP is far more capable of getting the better than them than them of him.
