The Watchlist – Dimitar Berbatov

There can be no greater proof of Dimitar Berbatov’s commitment to the Fulham cause than the sight earlier this month of the Bulgarian resplendent in oxygen mask undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy in a bid to recover from a muscle injury.

Sadly, this intense form of therapy was not quite enough to ensure he was fit to face Southampton in Gameweek 7 but with Martin Jol admitting Berbatov was close to making the squad, the signs are strong that he should make a full recovery to lead the line for Villa’s visit to the Cottage in Gameweek 8.

Since signing for Fulham on a two-year deal at the end of the summer transfer window, experienced Fantasy managers have been keeping a close eye on Berbatov’s performances. During his time at Spurs and United, the maverick Bulgarian was not just a key Fantasy asset, but a game changer at times, capable of 20+ point hauls, regardless of opponent, to propel savvy Fantasy managers up their mini-leagues with gusto.

His hat-trick for Tottenham in the London side’s 6-4 demolition of Reading in December 2007 proved to be the first of five in England’s top-flight. Berbatov became the first Man United player to bag three against Liverpool for 64 years during the Red Devils’ 3-2 victory over their bitter North West rivals back in September 2010.

Later in that golden boot winning season, he cemented his credentials as one of the Premier League’s greats with an incredible five-goal haul as United hammered Blackburn 7-1 at Old Trafford. More was to come during 2011, a year which started and ended with a hat-trick. Berbatov struck three times in a 5-0 home win against Birmingham City in January and in the Boxing Day home clash with Wigan, which the Red Devils won by the same margin.

Despite these impressive hauls, Berbatov spent long periods of his United career on the bench, which has seen his starting price plummet this season to just 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game. However, in stark contrast to his final months at Old Trafford, Berbatov finds himself as very much a wanted man, with Jol declaring last month:

“The big difference for him (Berbatov) is that he knows, if he is fit, then he will play a lot of games. He’s an important part of our set-up, of course. He’s probably our biggest player. At Man United, which of course is a bigger club, it was maybe different in the last year or so.”

Judging by his two starts at Fulham so far this season, not only has the 31-year-old retained his keen eye for goal but he is emerging as the main attacking focal point of the team, who seemingly have one mission; get the ball to the Berbatov and let him do the rest. During his first start, against West Brom at home, the Bulgarian scored twice and achieved maximum bonus points in the FPL game, where he also accrued 13 points.

He failed to score during his second start, away to Wigan the next week, but managed an eight point haul in the FPL game with an assist and another maximum bonus point haul. His goal threat and team mates’ zeal to target Berbatov in the penalty box ensured he received an EA Sport Index score of 43 in each of those games, an indication that more goals and bonus points are set to follow.

While their home form under Jol continues to appeal, the West Londoners have also proved hardier foes on the road; they have found the net six times over four matches on their travels, already half their total number of away goals for the previous campaign. With fixtures (AVL, rea, EVE, ars, SUN), price, goal threat and a pedigree that places Berbatov among the Premier League’s greatest ever strikers, he may soon become a player that is impossible to ignore.

I know the general rule is not to ever triple up in defence, but with stoke having the second best defence in the league and their keeper, full back and centre back costing 4.5,4.5 and 5, I'm temped? (after this game week) considering the other options around that price are....Swansea/Fulham/Sunderland?

Tough one. Risky but could pay off. I would defo consider doubling up with Bego & Shawx/Wilson but the triple would be a bit too much for me personally.

Yeah I think doubling up is the way forward rather than an all or nothing approach, I'll have to seek out other cheap options around that price. Thanks for everyone's advice!

      Cover... meh.

What's the point in insisting on owning a player from City if none of them are nailed on?

There's Hart, Kompany and Toure who aren't really worth the money given the alternatives.

There's also Silva and Aguero who seem likely to play 75% but aren't cheap.

At least Tevez isn't too expensive.

I would expect Berb & Mata to outscore Jelly & Michu over a decent period of time.

Problem for me would be Mata's short-term fixtures aren't great, Berbs are average IMO and Jelly is on form with decent fixtures.

After the Man U game Stoke have the best set of fixtures. People think longer than just 1 week ahead. Anyway he should get some decent save points at OT.
Lots of people are wildcarding this international break and I reckon he'll be the no. 1 goalie pick for those wildcarding..

It's the 12% that makes it worse. It means I should be up with the big boys. It should really be 25% or more looking at everyone else which would put in the 460s or more to the point the top 1K

Doesn't pay to dwell on it too long - I did a little exercise towards the end of last season whereby I looked into the optimum first 11 and captain I could have chosen each week from the 15 I had at my disposal.

The results were horrifying - not a single week where I'd got everything right, literally hundreds of points leaked through poor (albeit mostly excusable) matchday choices. I think I worked out that if I'd made the perfect choices, even given all my transfer cockups I'd have been about 200 points clear at the top of the entire league. So important to get those things right.

Your score is doubly as bad considering there are quite a few players that you could have selected every week as your captain and done better, including all of those you've captained so far.

In other words, you somehow managed to score less by manually selecting your captain every week!

I know people will disagree as this is a divisive issue, but there's so much randomness involved in FFS that picking a captain is so difficult.

You can have a top player playing at home against a crap team and there's still a chance he will draw a blank, even if he's been scoring for fun over the past few fixtures - Bale, I'm looking at you.

I did so well last year because I got RVP before most and captained him almost all of the time. This year I've had 6 different captains over 7 GWs: Torres, RVP, Tevez, Bale, Rooney and Hazard

As a guide, if you were captaining the average player from your team each week, he would contribute 16.66% of the toal (i.e. 2/12). You need to be significantly above that obviously or you're either (i) unlucky, or (ii) captaining the wrong players.

i saw your suggestion re: Valencia. The 8.9 figure came from after having made the other transfers I have planned for future weeks. This rules out Valencia and Walcott this week. So I have listed some options below. My other remains to just play Davies and take someone else the week after.

Just thought it was an interesting option since I think he will be one of the most nailed on United players and also low ownership and as you see I answered below- I am 100% on the Nolan wagon 🙂 Barfa is also an option, but I think Ba and a defender could be the best option for Newcastle cover.

If your captain's score was the average score for a player in your team in any one week (doubled), that would be 2/12 = 16.6666%

You'd want it to be about 25%, I reckon.

If your captain was picked at random, then on average he'd get 2/12th of your total i.e. 16.666%.
Since you get to pick, I'd say that's worth another 50%, thus 25%.

I like Nolan a lot but I'd have to say Morrison as a more complete option. 0.3 cheaper too.

Nasri at 8.2 would be a flair punt...

Alternatively you could go cheaper to upgrade elsewhere. Depends on your strategy really.

Holding Michu one more week. Had planned to sell Johnson, but Ramirez' injury has changed things

You lack city coverage. Get HBA or downgrade Johnson/Michu to ultracheap(sterling) lets you get Silva.

its between HBA and Michu for santi for me. Can't get him till next week unless i make a hit. But with norwich up it might be worth it.

You are better off going cheaper and getting rid of Johnson. Nolan, Morrison or Walters sort of range.

I was planning on Johnson out, but it's shirley crazy to sell a fit player and keep an injured one?

I didnt mean to do all those changes in one week. Obviously Ramirez out for a cheap player around 6.5M. Then upgrade Johnson to Mata/Bale price range after GW8 would be my suggestion

hmm, it's between Nolan or the more expensive Barfa. But a downgrade of Michu after GW8 could fund an upgrade of Johnson.

Nolan this week? Then HBA in next week maybe, the Sun v New derby hardly has too many goals apart from that 5-1 anomaly 2 years ago. By then you will know who of Johnson or Michu you want to boot first.

plan on punting on Tarrabt after GW9, QPR have a good run and he's actually found some form. Don't want to keep fiddling around with that midfield area. I wish Ramirez was fit 🙁

my other option is just bench Ramirez next GW and play Kebe (liv) or Daves (WIG) then go -4 the week after and pick 2 from Johnson, Michu and Ramirez to lose?

I wouldnt want to play either of them really. Tarrabt is an interesting one, I dont have the kahunas to get burnt by him again.

Lose Ramirez for Nolan IMO and then re asses Johnson or Michu next week. No point taking the -4, you have had enough of those for now.

Ramirez > Nolan for gwks 8-9 (SOT, wig) then do Nolan > Morrison for gwks 10-11 (SOT, wig)

      use spare cash elsewhere

      any good to you?

Looking at the teams this season, this biggest change in dynamic seems to be the move towards 4231 or 4411 formations and the player in 'the hole'. Whereas midfielders were previously more prone to providing assists than goals, I think we can expect a lot more goal from those types of midfielder this season. On the flipside, I think the stock of wingers has gone down quite a lot, from both an assist and a goalscoring perspective as a lot more play seems to be going through the middle...

    Any other views on this?
