The Watchlist – Dimitar Berbatov

There can be no greater proof of Dimitar Berbatov’s commitment to the Fulham cause than the sight earlier this month of the Bulgarian resplendent in oxygen mask undergoing Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy in a bid to recover from a muscle injury.

Sadly, this intense form of therapy was not quite enough to ensure he was fit to face Southampton in Gameweek 7 but with Martin Jol admitting Berbatov was close to making the squad, the signs are strong that he should make a full recovery to lead the line for Villa’s visit to the Cottage in Gameweek 8.

Since signing for Fulham on a two-year deal at the end of the summer transfer window, experienced Fantasy managers have been keeping a close eye on Berbatov’s performances. During his time at Spurs and United, the maverick Bulgarian was not just a key Fantasy asset, but a game changer at times, capable of 20+ point hauls, regardless of opponent, to propel savvy Fantasy managers up their mini-leagues with gusto.

His hat-trick for Tottenham in the London side’s 6-4 demolition of Reading in December 2007 proved to be the first of five in England’s top-flight. Berbatov became the first Man United player to bag three against Liverpool for 64 years during the Red Devils’ 3-2 victory over their bitter North West rivals back in September 2010.

Later in that golden boot winning season, he cemented his credentials as one of the Premier League’s greats with an incredible five-goal haul as United hammered Blackburn 7-1 at Old Trafford. More was to come during 2011, a year which started and ended with a hat-trick. Berbatov struck three times in a 5-0 home win against Birmingham City in January and in the Boxing Day home clash with Wigan, which the Red Devils won by the same margin.

Despite these impressive hauls, Berbatov spent long periods of his United career on the bench, which has seen his starting price plummet this season to just 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game. However, in stark contrast to his final months at Old Trafford, Berbatov finds himself as very much a wanted man, with Jol declaring last month:

“The big difference for him (Berbatov) is that he knows, if he is fit, then he will play a lot of games. He’s an important part of our set-up, of course. He’s probably our biggest player. At Man United, which of course is a bigger club, it was maybe different in the last year or so.”

Judging by his two starts at Fulham so far this season, not only has the 31-year-old retained his keen eye for goal but he is emerging as the main attacking focal point of the team, who seemingly have one mission; get the ball to the Berbatov and let him do the rest. During his first start, against West Brom at home, the Bulgarian scored twice and achieved maximum bonus points in the FPL game, where he also accrued 13 points.

He failed to score during his second start, away to Wigan the next week, but managed an eight point haul in the FPL game with an assist and another maximum bonus point haul. His goal threat and team mates’ zeal to target Berbatov in the penalty box ensured he received an EA Sport Index score of 43 in each of those games, an indication that more goals and bonus points are set to follow.

While their home form under Jol continues to appeal, the West Londoners have also proved hardier foes on the road; they have found the net six times over four matches on their travels, already half their total number of away goals for the previous campaign. With fixtures (AVL, rea, EVE, ars, SUN), price, goal threat and a pedigree that places Berbatov among the Premier League’s greatest ever strikers, he may soon become a player that is impossible to ignore.

nice article on berbs but still going down on fiso, wonder if he will be 6.9 again by next week? would love to get him back for what i originally paid plus the .2 i banked when i dropped him 2 weeks ago at 7.3. tidy bit of business there especially if his temporary replacement fletcher goes up to 7.5 and i bank that .1 as well. although i would like to keep fletcher for home against newcastle and wait to see how berbs does.

Mainly due to the fact that his last match he was subbed out after 60 mins for complete ineffectiveness against a poor road defense. Get off that pony and ride with Maloney.

that's my plan. Use FTs for short term striker changes if poss.

I could easily do Fletcher to Giroud then swap back when Giroud has mun and Fletch has AVL.

Lambert to Berb and a potential swap back could be soon on the cards.

Congrats mate. When you and the missus inevitably stress about things on the day, worrying they aren't perfect just remember that the little things won't matter. No one ever thinks back and says "it was great but i wish the flowers had been a foot further to the right in the church". Relax and just make sure you tell her she looks gorgeous in your speech!

best advice i had given to me for the speech was that it's the best man's job to be funny, yours to be romantic.
Try the old 'most people say their wedding day is the best day of their lives, but that implies it's all downhill from there. I promise I'll try to make every new day together the best one we ever have...". Got tears from the women and nasty looks from the men when i did that one!

I'm looking at swapping Michu for Taarabt next week. As goal scoring mids go, Taarabt is bang in form, and has nice fixtures from next week (bar 2 where I can cover him anyway) plus he is likely to be on pens

Judging by what Fellaini supposedly said about his injury...it doesn't seem that serious and I wouldn't be surprised if he was back for the QPR game. However, seeing as I'm not one of those people who bought him at 6.5m I think he has to move on immediately so I can bag the profit. But anyone hanging onto him might get a surprise start against QPR.

He is close to a suspension which is another reason for selling quickly...

      Bale / Mata / Cazorla / Pienaar - Kaca

      RVP / Ba / Berba

How could you work out if there's a correlation between Tevez being on the pitch, and Silva making loads of assists, or not making loads of assists?

You can't do it so much this year yet because Tevez is starting almost every game. I am wondering if Tevez (who is a creator at heart in many ways) takes some of Silva's final ball/assist potential away. Whereas last year, while Carlos was getting his handicap down - Silva was the man.

      Is there anything to that?

It's a stupidly small sample but Silva last 2 weeks when he's been on form and alongside Tevez is pretty much the same (if not slightly better) than Silva from the whole of last season.

The more I look at the stats the more I think Tevez is still the best player to own from City, regardless of price. At least in the short-term.

Starting to have some second thoughts about ditching Michu after this week. My plan is to raise some cash this week (Cech -> Begovic) and then use it on Michu -> Bale next week. But could it be better spent (on say Lambert -> Berb or upgrading Maloney to someone like Morrison)?

      What are people's thoughts?

I don't think Michu is fixture proof, but holding on to him for an extra week wouldn't be terrible.

For me, it's the question of how necessary it is to get Bale. One more large haul and his price will explode. Don't particularly want him this week, but the following two are nice.

How soon should I draft Jack Wilshere into my team?

And is he likely to play B2B getting rotated with Diaby or CAM with Cazorla pushed wide right?

How nailed on do you lads think he'll be?

Yup. Deadly. When both Jack and Vassiriki are fit, Wenger will have Arteta, Diaby, Wilshere and Cazorla available, and only three midfield slots. It makes me worry about Jack's nailed-on-ness (especially given Conrad's opinion below). I want Jack in my team, but I fear he may not play awfully much.

i could see him spelling Diaby (pushing Arteta back) or Arteta (taking his role), but i dont see him pushing Santi out side. as we've seen thusfar, he's pretty damn successful running the middle of the park. Jack would end up there with only a Santi injury, or as a sub for Santi in some game.

Hi guys. Anyone else currently have Hazard on the bench for next week? It’s a bit ridiculous but i think it’s the way it’s gotta be really…

      Jaaskelainen (Begovic)
      Baines Rangel Jenkinson (Clark Clyne)
      Bale Nolan Cazorla Michu (Hazard)
      Fletcher Suarez(c) Jelavic

Thinking to save transfer and re-assess in gw9. Sound like a good plan?

Seems reasonable to me. Hazard may well be a bit of a flat track bully. Check the opponents for his big hauls to date.

Odd how points on one's bench bother one more than points not in one's squad at all. Makes little sense. Either way you don't get them but at least on your bench, you already have the player, so no need to worry about getting them in, plus their price is likely to rise, etc.,etc.

            But even so...
