The Digest – Gameweek 8

Filed under: The Digest - Posted by: Mark

As Gameweek 8 drifts slips into memory, we digest the brilliance of a pre-season favourite, the options presented by Chelsea’s three musketeers and how United’s own attacking trio are causing consternation…

The Player

Juan Mata’s performance in the Gameweek opener at White Hart Lane sparked Roberto Di Matteo’s side and provided further evidence that the Spaniard deserves to find a place back in our Fantasy squads.

Widely fancied going into the new season, Mata seemed jaded by his Euro 2012 and Olympic exploits and drifted to three opening blanks while new arrival Eden Hazard sparkled. That led to the inevitable exodus that saw Mata’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price point slide to 8.8 by Gameweek 6 – at which point Chelsea’s playmaker had come to life.

Handed an extended rest over the international break in September, Mata has responded with five assists and three goals from Gameweek 5 onwards, overshadowing Hazard’s contribution and presenting a fresh and obvious route to Chelsea’s significant attacking threat.

Mata’s ownership and FPL price is now recovering, although at 9.0, he is still well below his initial valuation and offers clear value to new investors.

While Chelsea have a tough schedule ahead, a potential lack of clean sheets could well draw the sting from Di Matteo’s side and, in his current form, Mata looks best placed to orchestrate and inflict the damage at the other end.

The Team

The Mata-inspired White Hart Lane victory leads Chelsea into four home matches in the next six – on the face of it, an encouraging slate of fixtures. However, United, Liverpool and City are the next three at Stamford Bridge.

While that run seems likely to stretch Di Matteo’s side defensively, Chelsea’s attacking talent will need to come to the fore to maintain their run at the top of the table.

Eden Hazard currently commands over 40% ownership in the FPL and is also the most owned player in the Sky Sports game; his opening to the season providing all the evidence needed to lift the Belgian to near-essential status.

Intriguingly, Mata has now put a significant dent in that status and finally emerged as the player that generated the pre-season hype and heavy initial investment. While his ability to earn assists is undoubted, Mata is already half way to his goal tally of last season, indicating that, in Chelsea’s new system, he is proving more of a goal threat.

While Mata is in bloom, the insight into Chelsea’s system offered by the Spaniard indicates that he is perhaps unlikely to have a monopoly on goals amongst the three playmakers…

“The three behind the striker [Fernando Torres] always try to play with movement, swapping positions and trying to assist our striker… We have to work in training but we are players who play like this naturally as well. I don’t think it is a surprise. Oscar, Hazard, Fernando are top players. If you can win and also play really well, it is the perfect way.”

Di Matteo has constructed an offensive unit that is far from reliant on the goals of Fernando Torres and Fantasy managers appear to have four routes into this flourishing attacking unit. With Torres shedding owners at pace amidst stiff completion in our squads up front, it’s clear that the midfield trio are in favour.

The momentum is quite rightly with Mata and Hazard owners will either make the switch or hold firm and wait for the returns to swing back to their man. If both are out or reach, then Oscar provides another way in – available for 7.8 in FPL, the Brazilian has just a single assist to his name so far this season and, while that makes him a poor relation to the heavy-hitting duo, he will be a consideration for some.

Arguably, however, given the attacking intent shown by Chelsea’s full-backs, they provide a fifth avenue for investment. Branislav Ivanovic has the greater goal threat, the ownership and perhaps offers stronger security than Ashley Cole but, at 6.7, the left-back warrants attention for those willing to gamble on attacking returns over what Mata has declared, “the most important part of the season.”

The Talking Point

While Mata gave Hazard’s owners plenty to ponder, it seems that those holding Robin Van Persie will be forced to go on questioning the value of their prize asset. The Dutchman again returned in United’s 4-2 win over Stoke but he was overshadowed by Wayne Rooney for the second consecutive match.

Rooney’s brace and assist more than balanced out his unfortunate own goal and saw him come out of the Gameweek as the top scoring forward on show, ahead of the Dutchman.

At 1.7 cheaper in the FPL, the appeal is obvious and those who have point blank refused to shell out for Van Persie have themselves a clear contender to fill the void and cover United’s ample attacking potential.

There will still be a huge amount of faith shown in Van Persie, not least because he looks certain to lead the attack away from home while Rooney retreats to a deeper role in Sir Alex Ferguson’s new system. That didn’t prevent Rooney from returning at Newcastle, however, and from Van Persie’s comments post-match, it’s clear that there is much fluidity in United’s new three-pronged attack along with Danny Welbeck…

“Sometimes Wayne plays at the top, sometimes I do and then he drops in and then you have Danny coming in from the left sometimes too. I might also go out there for a few minutes in a game or Wazza does. I think it’s only the second or third time that we’ve played in this formation, but the main thing is we’ve had a good game and got three points.”

It remains to be seen if this movement materialises away from home and if Rooney can rival Van Persie in matches at Chelsea, Villa and Norwich coming up in the next four Gameweeks. With some debate still surrounding the issue of the designated penalty taker in the United ranks, there is clearly plenty of uncertainty as to whether Van Persie can outscore Rooney by a margin that would warrant the gulf in price.

One thing is for sure, Van Persie’s owners can at least sit and contemplate the option of the switch knowing that it’s a nice problem to have. From the evidence of this weekend, both Rooney and Van Persie look to be on their way to dominating the FPL forward rankings.

  1. Help me improve to side I have one ft

    Bego foster

    Demel jenkinson rafael wisdom Davies

    Michu barfa carzola Walters Pienaar

    Rvp berba suerez

    2.0 mil in bank

    1. Defence needs a bit of an upgrade but you would need to free up some money. Maybe wait until you have 2 FT's and downgrade Suarez > Ba

      1. u mean upgrade;)

    2. your defence is horrible...rafael>baines?

    3. Lose Jenkinson would be my advice

  2. Does everyone still rate Giroud? Still reckon he'll come good? I don't and still stand by my rating of him on the opening day v Sunderland, he's a rich man's Carlton Cole.

1 goal in 8 games from the top scorer in the French League. Someone argued that he wasn't get as many starts for the Gunners as Wenger was easing him into the team. If he's last seasons top scorer in France and an international player he shouldn't need easing in. He should be chomping at the bit to smash the net at every opportunity.

    Discuss.

    1. He'll come good as long as he gets starts.

AW should really dismiss the notion of starting Gervinho as the false forehead. He was scoring goals in that role but i think it's a really bad idea.

      1. We shall see. I can't see the fuss abut Giroud yet. Hopefully he'll come good and bang in the goals but I won't consider him in FF unless he does. I like Gervinho, he's wholehearted and not lacking skill but you're right he's no striker. What happened to Arshavin? I, painfully, remember him getting 4 at An field. Surely someone can motivate him. A huge waste of a huge talent, now looks disinterested and lazy.

    2. Giroud (c) !

  3. Evening lads! Would love help with my team.
    Foster Federici
    Baines Ivan Demel Cuellar Clyne
    Hazard Yaya Cazorla Michu Guthrie
    Berba Tevez Fletcher

    1ft, 2.6 in the bank!
    A) Michu ---> Bale (0.1 short now, will get that when Michu rises tomorrow!)
    b) Yaya-----> Bale
    c) Fletcher--->Ba
    d) Fletcher + Yaya/Michu ---> Ba + bale(4 point hit)

    Thanks in advance,everyone!
    Cheers!

    1. B) looks like the best option....

  4. Schwarzer and Mignolet are my keepers. Someone mentioned earlier I should swap them for Begovic and Jussi but I don't think the Hammers will keep as many CS as Fulham/Sunderland.

I do think Begovic is worth getting though. Should I keep Schwarzer and sell Mignolet seeing as I own Cuellar?

    1. do so!!
i will be going for the migno and bego combo

    2. I have the Mignolet-Bego combo and I love it.

Jussi's fixtures are tough from GWs 10-19.

      1. and the confirmation :D

      2. Nice one. Cheers mate.

    3. Krul and bego personally

    4. makes sense to bring in Begovic

    5. I have Foster, Begovic, happy with that. You've 2 good keepers, Cuellar to Wilson?

      1. I was gonna do Lowton > wilson

        1. Do it. Nearly guaranteed a CS every home game some more in some away and maybe a few attacking points.

You're a Breaking Bad fan? Great she, nearly finished season 2. I'm living in Albuquerque, just as bleak as it looks on BB!

          1. Great show! Fecking predictor.

          2. Haha is New Mexico not such a good state to live in general?

One of the Four Corners states. Is Arizona any good or just too much desert?

            1. New Mexico is grand. Albuquerque is 5,000 feet above sea level so even if it gets above 100 degrees during the day it cools down a bit at night. I know a few lads in Phoenix AZ. For about 3 months of the summer you can't go outside the door cos it's too hot. Temps can go above 115 and doesn't cool down as much at night. But much more to do in Phoenix than Albuquerque, NBA, NFL, Baseball, Ice Hockey etc. NM and AZ are both desert but we're in the high desert. Can ski here in December. Albuquerque scenery, both mountains n Latinas, are good but city is very spread out and bleak. The bars don't like it if you get drunk either. :-(

              1. Haha the bars need to lighten up and realise their purpose. How can Americans have such relaxed laws on guns yet be so overly strict when it comes to drinking?

                1. It's more of an Albuquerque thing. Was in Taos in NM and drinking is encouraged! I hear many are stocking up on guns in fear that Obama will change the gun laws when he, inevitably as it looks, get re-elected.

  5. If it's so hard to pick just one Chelsea midfielder and one United striker, why not to have them all in one team? The upcoming fixtures look very promising.

    Mata, Hazard, Michu, Nolan, Sterling
    Rooney, RVP, Crouch

    1. hmmm neither have great fixtures

      1. United after GW10: Villa, Norwich, QPR, West Ham, Reading = 3/4 goals per game

Chelsea after GW9: Swansea, (Liverpool), West Brom, (Man City), Fulham, West Ham. City is the only real threat. Otherwise I don't see Chelsea scoring less than 2 goals per game.

i hear what u saying about chelsea and united, are u planning to WC to this team on GW11? or do some hits? If u gonna WC i think its a go u just can't go wrong with that much quality... imbalanced it may be but who cares when u got 4 players that good! On the same note I am looking to either do
          A) hazard to mata , defoe to rooney by GW11
          B) michu to mata, defoe to giroud/jelavic by GW11

i.e. I want two of the four players ur talking about by then... which option would u go for mata and hazard or dump hazard and go mata and rooney?

  6. what do ppl think of kebe? alternative to sterling, rdg good fixtures....but theyre reading

  7. there is a new post lads...

  8. I going to get Caulker in he's a threat on corners and i think he will continue to start after the omment he came out with AVB giving young players a chance

  9. I know that City have been conceding and Mancini's an FPL tormentor with his rotation policies but who do you pundits think is the best City defensive option???

    1. Kompany for sure.

Micah is also getting a run of games lately.

    2. Kompany seems to be the only viable option really.

  10. walters for fellani? nay or yay

    1. Emp

yay !! :) but only if u have other everton cover now or by GW11... next two fixtures arent great for them but after that looks good

  11. Heard on Talk sport. QPR have bought in so many foreigners, don't seem to know each other that well, not telling together. Queens Parks Strangers! Tumbleweed:-)

“I am happy with the way I’ve started, but on the other hand, I should have scored four or five more, so that’s something for me to work on.”

Robin Van Persie talks about his early form at United ahead of his first Manchester derby
