Watchlist

The Watchlist – Jobi McAnuff

In the search for attacking points at a bargain basement price, savvy Fantasy managers need to look for the unlikeliest of players in the most improbable of places. At first glance, perhaps, Reading’s Jobi McAnuff, the 31-year journeyman midfielder with just one international cap to his name for Jamaica, represents a ludicrous route to Fantasy football glory.

Dig deeper, however, and he emerges as not only a solid Fantasy prospect but a possible contender for bargain of the season. Those eagle-eyed Fantasy managers who have already taken a close look at the assists table will have seen that McAnuff nestles in joint third place with Juan Mata on five, just behind Eden Hazard and Carlos Tevez – despite playing for one of the Premier League’s least attacking sides.

This ability to lay on chances for others has been a hallmark of his career, spent largely in the second tier of English football. In Reading’s successful promotion season of 2011/12 he registered 12 assists as well as five goals and, over the previous six seasons, where he also played for Championship stalwarts Watford and Crystal Palace, McAnuff amassed a total of 48 assists.

Aside from his clear attacking potential, a favourable run of fixtures over the next five Gameweeks (qpr, NOR, EVE, wig, avl) have propelled the Royals winger onto our newly-updated Watchlist rankings. Price is another factor. In the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, McAnuff started at 5.5 but is now available at just 5.1, with an ownership of 1% making him a standout selection among the game’s differentials. In the Sky Sports game he is priced similarly (5.0) but only 0.3% of managers have noticed that he has now amassed 38 points, four more than Steven Pienaar and five more than Hatem Ben Arfa, who is owned by a quarter of Sky players.

With 31 points in the FPL game he is Reading’s most impressive Fantasy performer so far and has accrued the same number of points as the similarly priced Raheem Sterling, for example, though investing in McAnuff comes with a slight health warning. As shown by Tuesday’s Capital One Cup clash with Arsenal, clean sheet points are certainly unlikely for McAnuff, as Reading have conceded in every game so far this campaign. In addition, McDermott’s men have only mustered 11 goals so far, notching four on the road, meaning McAnuff’s team mates will need to step up their game if the wide man’s creative endeavours are to be further realised.

While the 7-5 home cup defeat by Arsenal last Tuesday may have felt like “a funeral” according to the Reading manager, the signs are positive that the team will improve and gather more attacking returns over their forthcoming kind run of fixtures, though. McDermott has moved away from a more cautious 4-4-1-1 in recent games, with a shift in formation to 4-4-2 in three of the last four Gameweeks producing seven goals. If Reading can pick their chins off the floor after the midweek Madejski defeat, the short-term at least looks potentially prosperous for McAnuff’s possible suitors.

    Begovic - (Vorm)
    Baines - Hughes - Walker - (McCartney) - (Stam)
    Cazorla - Morrison - Walters - Noble/Pienaar - (Pienaar/Noble)
    RVP - Aguero - Berbatov

I would worry about your midfield, not this week because the fixtures favor you. you have 4 guys who are considered 4th or 5th type mids on the team. This week i would love that team, but going forward i would say that you are going to get many a week like your last one from your mids. If Aguero gets rolling with RVP they can compensate. You may consider selling Vorm before his price drops too much and get some cash in for future moves.

Anyone thinking about doubling up on Stoke back line?

    Strongly considering Begovic + Cameron

Or would it be smarter to do Begovic + Hughes/Nelsen/Cuellar/Simpson ?

I'm in that exact boat and wondering what to do.

Either Lallana and Cameron or Sterling and Simpson for me.

I don't really like going with a double at the back. Too risky.

Mark - Tomato sauce or brown sauce, or are you more of a mayonnaise man yourself?

It so happens that condiments are one of my passions. Brown sauce in the main. Ketchup with eggs and that's about it. Getting given Ketchup with a bacon sandwich is one of my pet hates.

Right, had a play around after some advice, thoughts on this WC team?

(And yes, I too have noticed the lack of RVP)

    Szczesny, Begovic

    Wilkinson, Olsson, Nelsen, Baines, Rafael

    Bale, Mata, Cazorla, Oscar, Maloney

    Ba, Defoe, Berbatov

Few penney's in the bank to upgrade Defoe to Giroud if Arsenal look like they might find the back of the net again. Fixtures are there, shots are there, just not the goals..

    The defense rotates quite well.

      1) Be certain Szczesny is 1st choice.
      2) No RVP or City coverage? Not bad fixtures to be fair.
      3) I think you have a very strong midfield which is good, but is it reliable enough to bring you points each week? Probably, but to be safe I think you need a heavy hitter up front.
4)United coverage is essential for the future, even Rooney if cash is tight.

I might think about Cesar or Jaaskelainen instead of Szczesny - good rotation; I am not sanguine about starting Begovic away. I like the Oscar play. Wilkinson is a pretty serious thug: 2 yellows so far in the only 2 games he has started; 20 yellows in his last 4 years and 2 reds. Cameron or Shawcross, dude. Or, Hughes if he fits in your rotation scheme.

I still don't get why you should be happier...I'm perfectly happy owning Mata...and I know he will play against Swansea...

Hazard got his customary penalty...he's still only scored one goal from open play and that was all Mata's creation.

You are right, I should have phrased this differently.

The game tonight has given us, Hazard owners, enough confidence not to transfer him out for Mata. I could be wrong though, and Mata could keep scoring, and rising out of my reach.

I realize you don't score points in league cup games...you know what I meant. Scoring goals and assisting.

Yeah I was just trying to say...you shouldn't jump to conclusions when a game runs for 120 minutes... 😀

Don't get me wrong...If I was a Hazard owner I wouldn't be rushing to sell either...only if I needed the extra money perhaps...so a downgrade to Mata might make sense. I think it's clear they're both going to continue to be awesome FPL players this year!

The other point I was making is...I got Hazard at 9.7, my sell price is 10.0 and Mata is now 9.4...0.6 saving doesn't get me excited enough to 1) transfer out a quality fantasy player and 2) use a FT.

Was considering McAnuff even before this article..

    Set on doing Berba+Santi+Foster-->RVP+McAnuff/Maloney+Tremmel

Who appeals to you more, McAnuff or Maloney?? (As a fantasy prospect obviously)

    Will be rotating with Sterling.

Tbh Aqua, I pondered this long n' hard. Neither of them offer the upside required at .6 more than Puncheon.

I'd have the Muff at the moment, main man, DGW etc. but I'd rather save the cash for a first teamer.

Form is calculated on previous results (average of the last 3 or 6?) - I forget as it's such a useless measure in itself.

Form (season) may be this averaged over the season so far. It won't really matter as the Form measure is pants to begin with. Instead of levelling out the "freak results", from gives it undue prominence imo - that's exactly the opposite of a helpful metric.
