Watchlist

The Watchlist – Jobi McAnuff

In the search for attacking points at a bargain basement price, savvy Fantasy managers need to look for the unlikeliest of players in the most improbable of places. At first glance, perhaps, Reading’s Jobi McAnuff, the 31-year journeyman midfielder with just one international cap to his name for Jamaica, represents a ludicrous route to Fantasy football glory.

Dig deeper, however, and he emerges as not only a solid Fantasy prospect but a possible contender for bargain of the season. Those eagle-eyed Fantasy managers who have already taken a close look at the assists table will have seen that McAnuff nestles in joint third place with Juan Mata on five, just behind Eden Hazard and Carlos Tevez – despite playing for one of the Premier League’s least attacking sides.

This ability to lay on chances for others has been a hallmark of his career, spent largely in the second tier of English football. In Reading’s successful promotion season of 2011/12 he registered 12 assists as well as five goals and, over the previous six seasons, where he also played for Championship stalwarts Watford and Crystal Palace, McAnuff amassed a total of 48 assists.

Aside from his clear attacking potential, a favourable run of fixtures over the next five Gameweeks (qpr, NOR, EVE, wig, avl) have propelled the Royals winger onto our newly-updated Watchlist rankings. Price is another factor. In the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, McAnuff started at 5.5 but is now available at just 5.1, with an ownership of 1% making him a standout selection among the game’s differentials. In the Sky Sports game he is priced similarly (5.0) but only 0.3% of managers have noticed that he has now amassed 38 points, four more than Steven Pienaar and five more than Hatem Ben Arfa, who is owned by a quarter of Sky players.

With 31 points in the FPL game he is Reading’s most impressive Fantasy performer so far and has accrued the same number of points as the similarly priced Raheem Sterling, for example, though investing in McAnuff comes with a slight health warning. As shown by Tuesday’s Capital One Cup clash with Arsenal, clean sheet points are certainly unlikely for McAnuff, as Reading have conceded in every game so far this campaign. In addition, McDermott’s men have only mustered 11 goals so far, notching four on the road, meaning McAnuff’s team mates will need to step up their game if the wide man’s creative endeavours are to be further realised.

While the 7-5 home cup defeat by Arsenal last Tuesday may have felt like “a funeral” according to the Reading manager, the signs are positive that the team will improve and gather more attacking returns over their forthcoming kind run of fixtures, though. McDermott has moved away from a more cautious 4-4-1-1 in recent games, with a shift in formation to 4-4-2 in three of the last four Gameweeks producing seven goals. If Reading can pick their chins off the floor after the midweek Madejski defeat, the short-term at least looks potentially prosperous for McAnuff’s possible suitors.

Anyone else quite like that smug feeling that you have when you've kept the likes of RVP, Hazard and Santi despite every week people telling you to get rid of one or all of them only to be scrambling the next week to bring them back?

    It's wrong I know.

Cameron is a good punt if you want to go for a Stoke players. Not sure Shawcross will get that much more attacking-wise to justify the extra £0.5M.

I have a sneaky feeling that Vertongen will become 'must-have' material soon though.

He could get enough bonus points to justify it though. 9 points against 6 this week. And I would imagine that'd be the trend with Stoke CS.

Over the course of a season, Shawcross would need something like 2 goals and 10 bonus points to justify the be equally as good value as Cameron, assuming Cameron gets no attacking returns and no bonus points. Shawx is a card magnet too, meaning minus points and the odd suspension.

Shawx will probably outscore Cameron but I doubt it will be by enough to really justify the £0.5m. Plus, you'll probably be benching Shawx for some games and might miss out on attacking returns. I'd also feel more comfortable benching a £4.5m Cameron.

It could work out being worth the extra money but I personally prefer to save the cash unless we're talking significant goal threat e.g. Baines, Verm

Lol @ my Hazard->Mata transfer. 120 minutes for Mata will surely mean he doesnt get 90 this coming weekend.

Anyhow, I think its a good move. Probably not much in it points wise, but Mata being cheaper swings it. Also, I thought Mata looked fantastic last night. Hazard too, admittedly.

Mata will still play 90 mins unless we can afford to sub him early. Hazard and Oscar looked excellent when they came on. Oscar could become the real value of these 3 at £7.8m.

Interested in why a few people are singing the praises of Lallana? I know he's been getting assists but he provides very little goal threat as far as I can tell, Southampton are in poor form, and I'm guessing he'll be utilised in a less attacking role as soon as Ramirez is back. Anyone want to argue the case for him over the likes of Morrison?

They are quite similar. Morrison edges it on goal threat, Lallana on assist potential. Fixtures are the decider for me - after GW11 WBA's fixtures are decidedly iffy whereas Saints' are rather pleasant.

Ok, new plan. HBA and Pienaar out, Mata and McAnuff in.

HBA hasn't done anything in a while now, and I have Ba. I've got Baines for Everton coverage. Mata gives me an extra captaincy choice, and McAnuff can rotate with Sterling. Would be for 2 frees.

    Sensible?

First of all, forget about coverage. It's a flawed concept.

I agree with HBA out but Pie out is inadvisable IMO.

Also, I'd never recommend rotating attacking players as it's a lot more difficult to predict where their attacking returns will come compared to predicting clean sheets.

They're similar value IMO. Mata has done well but I personally wouldn't sell Pie to make way. Is there no other way of funding it? Like I said, Barfa > Mata seems like a good start. Are you totally against Ba > Berba if it turned out he Ba wasn't fit for this weekend and Berba was?

I'd say there's a 100% chance of Mata, Bale and Tevez playing. Whether they'll get 90 mins is another matter.

I'd be very surprised if Jenkinson played at the weekend, especially after playing in the cup and the team conceding 5 goals. I also imagine Sagna's experience will be preferred against United.

It's too early to give % chances on Berba. Wait for news.
