A series of eye-catching performances in the last few months of the previous campaign had Fantasy managers queuing up to acquire the services of Hatem Ben Arfa. Having struggled to convince Alan Pardew of a regular role in the Newcastle starting XI, the Frenchman finally flourished on Tyneside as Newcastle moved to 4-3-3 but while a shift back to 4-4-2 has benefitted Demba Ba this season, Ben Arfa hasn’t quite delivered.

The opening three Gameweeks had looked promising. Notching in each of his first two home matches, Ben Arfa seemed set to rack up the points but since grabbing his side’s only goal in the Gameweek 3 draw with Villa, his Fantasy owners have been served up nothing more than a solitary assist.

          I'm playing Sterling but that's only if Ba is injured. Sold HBA for Mata last week...

          I'd probably go with Sterling because of his decent form...but it's one of those tricky ones...I don't envy your decision! HBA hasn't been as potent playing 4-4-2...seems to be better in a 4-4-3...I suppose I'd go for the player playing at home...so Sterling.

        oh right not a member as in this is all double dutch. basically he was looking better last year from a statistical point of view, so might be worth shipping when there's better value around. but beware cos he has some nice fixtures coming.

    Am I just forced to wildcard this week?

    I have Ba, Berba, Gervinho, Demel, Clark and Wilson. Planning on using my FT to get out Gervinho for Morrison.

    This would be my team, then, providing Clark actually plays.

    Foster

    Ivan – Baines – Clark

    Bale – Caz – Sterling – Morrison

    RVP – Berba – Ba

    (Maloney, Demel, Wilson, Non-playing GK)

    I’m in dire straits if a couple of those end up not playing, but haven’t planned my WC properly.

    So the stats for HBA aren't great, but isn't he the type of explosive player who defies stats? I.e., he can go 4 games without doing anything and then score 2 screamers?

    I am not sure this is reason enough to keep him, but given their run of fixture, surely I should keep him. Especially since I bought him at 7.5m.

      Depends what else you've got.

      Newcastle concern me on a few fronts.

      First, other than Demba Ba they don't look the same team as last season going forward. Maybe they have had tough early fixtures but neither Cabaye or Guttierez has really looked like doing much. Ben Arfa is sporadic.

      Secondly, are they that reliable defensively? Their players generally seem overpriced this season.

      I can see them winning matches but not pasting the opposition.

      Maybe I'm wrong, but given the choice between say Newcastle and Arsenal players over the next 10 GW's I'd be more worried about not having Arsenal players than Toon ones.

      i wouldnt sell ba especially to a manc forward. just sell gervinho so that if ba doesnt start you will have an alternative. i would do gervinho - walters given stoke's good run of fixtures

            going double, or even triple on Stoke defence is not the worst strategy atm given their fixtures and defensive record. Can easily be rectified in Jan.

    Sterling at home vs Newc or Lambert away at WBA? I am leaning towards Sterling as he is basically playing up front these days and I fancy them to score a couple. Lambert is not in the best of form, a bench worry away from home and WBA fairly strong at home...but he is on pens/some freekicks and always a goal threat when on the pitch. Any advice appreciated.
